The Arm Nautica

Arm Nautica
Despite Ivorian sitting in the middle of some of the most fruitful ocean trading routes across the map, most 'normal' ships that try to enter its port will most likely be sunk before they ever see the docks. The surrounding fauna and flora of the island frequently break open lesser ships for whatever edible cargo can be found, and combined with invisible sandbars and underwater mountains, the journey is an extremely perilous one to all but the most well-trained of sea captains; or, those that have either an Ivorian-crafted boat or an Ithecal shipwright at their disposal.

The Arm Nautica is a very new, some would even say still an unofficial lesser branch of the Militum, responsible for all the naval force of Ivorian and operating from the Yithiral docks.

A recent development, these ships are pure combat and nothing else. Quick to build, quicker in the water, these ships are designed to be the most nimble with only enough room for soldiers, their armour and their weapons. Everything has been sacrificed in order to preserve as much weight as possible allowing these ships to literally fly through the water at amazing speeds. What little weapons it can afford to have are not designed for hull-breaching, but sail-piercing; long-headed arrows slice the largest holes in unfurled sails in order to cripple their movement as much as possible, and heavy-duty bola that tangle a ship's rudder.

These boats are most usually used by crack guerrilla teams, able to disable enemy ships and then disrupt their attacks while the main ships line up their shots and sink the ship. The ratio of fighting-able militum soldiers to well-trained nautica sailors is normally about equal, but varies depending on the individual mission, since these ships cannot last out in water for more than a day, lacking food and repair supplies.

Destroyer
Size:
Crew:

Small, compared to other ships, Destroyers make up for it with the amount of firepower they contain. On command, rigging can be detached from the deck to allow rapid assembly of two long range ballista from snap-assembly pieces always stored below decks, each able to fire caged balls containing flint, tinder and an alchemy-created igniting agent that causes the mass of highly-flammable material to burst into flames upon impact, scattering decks of ships with flaming debris to cause maximum damage to both crew and deck. Armouries below decks hold excess stocks of longbows and arrows, allowing crewmembers to fire volleys of arrows dipped in oil and set alight upon their enemy, from the rigging and from the deck.

While the Destroyer prefers to set itself up over long ranges and obliterate enemy craft from a safe distance, both sides of the hull contain flaps that, when opened, reveal two sets of six hull-piercing harpoon ballista capable of entangling enemy ships at medium range and puncturing holes straight through wood at short ranges. With this, the ship can reel in and entangle itself during open board combat, or at the very least, restrain the ship and give the chance for the remaining flotilla to surround and barrage the enemy's hull from multiple directions before cutting all ties from within the Destroyer - a tactic frequently used, since Ivorian Empire naval ships very rarely travel alone.

Vanguard
Size:
Crew: 300 Nauticus, 100 Trade (Carpenters, Shipwrights, etc), 100 Militum.

Despite their name, these ships are by no means the fastest. Armoured to the teeth however, they are the most suited for travelling at the head of any flotilla and absorbing the heaviest blows of any assault, placing themselves intentionally in front of enemy fire to soak it with thick reinforced steel hulls. Rigging can be detached and anchor points around every mounting and mast are intentionally designed so that damaged masts can be removed and replaced as easily and quickly as possible.

Massive damage is entirely intentional for the Vanguard, and while it does carry a small armament of weapons and armed soldiers to protect against boarding, a good deal of space below decks is dedicated to spare sails, spare masts, spare rigging and various other necessary repair materials. Most of the crew are trained in carpentry, construction, ship-building or other repair duties that allow them to not only quickly repair any serious damage taken by the Vanguard, but more importantly, provide repairs and support to other ships in the flotilla.

Being a support ship and the first to engage in combat, most of the ship's weapons are close-combat. Four heavy ballista line either side of the ship, complete with metal shields to guide the operators during volleys, the rims of the ship have slots for archers to perch in, and the crew also boast long curved blades on the ends of spears, which they use in close combat to snap the supporting lines for enemy sails and rigging. In desperate moments, the ship can also launch fifty oars to manually push the boat; due to its massive amount of forward armour, it can throw itself through other ships like a giant battering ram.
