[Scalvoris Town] Viden Academy: Scalvoris Campus

As the shadow beasts attacked Idalos, a reaction to the latest battle in the historic war raging between the Immortals since the Great Shattering, great changes happened in Scalvoris. The twenty Pirate Lords disappeared in the first wave of the attack and a strange mist descended over Scalvoris. For one hundred trials exactly (some say one for each of the Arcs the Pirate Lords had remained in the city) the island was inaccessible. When the mist cleared, the island was irrevocably changed. Previously inaccessible waterways opened, inhospitable waters calmed and a wealth of flora and fauna seemed to flock to the area. People arrived from all over Idalos, some of who spoke of arriving on boats which spend across the water at incredible speed, or flown on the wings of strange blackbirds.

With this opening of the city, and the influx of new arrivals to the north-eastern island, new opportunities became evident for the inhabitants, old and new, of Scalvoris. First and foremost has been a reaching out to the nearby Viden. Scholars from the Viden Academy were invited to the island, lured in with the discovery of exotic plants and animals, all of which were to be studied. The expeditions to this mysteriously changed island opened up a whole new area of research for the academics of Viden. They were sending more and more over to the island, and the scholars were staying longer than initially planned. Soon, the leaders of the two nations came to an agreement: the first outpost of the Viden Academy.

Much smaller, of course, than it's counterpart the Scalvoris branch of the Viden Academy was housed in a round building in Scalvoris Town. With land either side, there was room to expand if needs be. Totally unlike any of the other buildings, the Viden Academy Campus simply added to the hodgepodge nature of Scalvoris town. A large circular building was constructed in the remains of an old hospital. Across the green to the left of the building itself was the public library, which received a massive increase in books to ensure that supply met demands. On the other side of the main building was the student accommodation.

He is not above offering his own life experience to lessons, but his arrogance and weakness for teasing female counterparts makes him a crass, and frustrating individual to spend significant time with. For those who are needing travel for class, it can be assumed his fees are paid for, however if needing a quick and independent ride, he will try to wring you for everything and anything he can.

Other Information: Kristoff Manyon is a man who believes, most strongly, that teaching is the noblest profession. What one teaches does not matter, as long as one teaches well. He has very high demands of his staff and he expects each one, from the first trill of the lesson to the last, to be prepared, professional and purposeful. He is a generally aloof chap who does not seem to have many friends. He is, however, a very proud father and his son, Cohen, started attending the Academy as soon as it opened.

Details: Alison’s parents were fishermen whose boat sank when she was just a baby. She was raised by an elderly uncle. Theophilus Jeeve was a Defier, a history professor and and a lifelong bachelor who did not know much about children which is why Alison’s upbring was unorthodox to say the least. He initiated her into his magic when she was a teenager. When he died a couple of arcs later she vowed to follow in his footsteps. She worked and studied in Viden at first, but when the Scalvoris Campus opened, she transferred there.

Alison is a very eccentric young woman. She is demanding and determined and extremely stubborn, and when one of her favourite topics comes up, she often rants for breaks, and it is almost impossible to get her to stop. She has a penchant for gross animals such as spiders, rats and toads, her clothes don’t always match, and she really likes alcohol. Sometimes she joins her students for a beer after class which is something that some of the more senior professors do not approve of. She is also an excellent teacher though which is why she has not been dismissed yet in spite of her slightly inappropriate behaviour.

He rarely joins them for dinner, he never sits with them and talks about his private life, and few know where he goes after class. And then there is the fact that he doesn’t show up at all from time to time, supposedly because he’s involved in some kind of important research. Some people claim that he’s undead, others insist that he’s an Immortal, and yet others are convinced that he’s up to no good. Most older students are afraid of him, but they all agree that he knows his stuff. He knows more about magic than most other people on Scalvoris – even a lot of mages.

There, after suffering a terrible injury at the hands of a bandit gang, a group of Adunih healers found her and nursed her back to health, against her protestations that she die with honor. They brought her back to health, and eventually, she came around. She turned to their way of thinking after wintering with them for a season.

And when the call came for her to make the run, and return to Yaralon, she reluctantly heeded the call back to her people and homeland. She made the run and on arriving in Yaralon, became a Fracture diver, collecting and studying wells as a matter of thrill-seeking. Eventually, she returned to her friends in the University of Scalvoris. There, she teaches the art of ensorcellment and the science of Fractive Studies, teaching about fractures, wells, and ensorcellment.

Details: Tag Fridson has been a professor at the University of Scalvoris since it was established. In that time, he has focused most of his studies on the Original Beings, especially Fei, and to a lesser extent their offspring, the Immortals as well as Emea, as he believes that some of the answers to Idalos’ riddles can only be found in the past, in the time before the Shattering, and beyond the world of Idalos. On top of that, he has an interest in psychology, especially in how people handle grief and anger, due to his own history.

Tag Fridson was an only child. His paternal grandparents already died before he was born. His maternal grandfather died when he was eight, and his maternal grandmother when he was fourteen, and his father when he was thirty-two. He was wounded during the collapse of the docks in 718 and eventually succumbed to his injuries. Since then, he has been wondering how people come to terms with such tragedies, and how tragedies shape the world.

In spite of the losses that he has suffered, Tag Fridson is not a sad or bitter man. He is quite happy most of the time. He is curious and adventurous, and possesses a subtle sense of humor. Tag Fridson has brown eyes and black hair and is not unattractive. He is unmarried and lives alone, but he has a circle of good friends and visits his widowed mother on a regular basis. After the events in the Glass Temple and the Forging he became known to the greater public because of the way that he supported Scalvoris, although he never became Forged.

Despite that, Atwater is extremely dedicated, always ready to help his students with personal or academic-related issues. He's known for assigning extra, practical tasks to his students. Atwater is completely married to his job, having little interest in anything outside of the University.

He is, in so much as he is determined that they will do very well and make a name for him at the Academy. Those who are doing well are well treated, given extra time, help and assistance. Those who are not doing well get the same, in the hopes that he will be "that wonderful professor" and his name and reputation will be built. He is a cold and calculating young man who is always watchful that no one, ever, is better than him.

Other Information: If there is a world outside of her classroom, it is fair to say that Esme Dashiell is completely unaware of it. She is focused, far far too focused in fact, on her work. It is whispered around the corridors of the university that she has lost whatever tenuous grip on reality she had before. Her fascination is with the stars and what they are, how they might be there, and what function they serve. She is eccentric, scatterbrained and forgetful in the extreme. Fundamentally, though, she is a woman who has a passion and who pursues it completely. Bizarrely, she is an excellent teacher who inspires and encourages her students somehow despite the fact that she has very limited interpersonal skills.

Other Information: Jasper is a very enthusiastic professor with some very unique issues. He spent a large portion of his life in the field, studying fauna up close in their natural environments. While he doesn't quite recall how much time he spent out in the wilds, it is believed he's spent at least twenty arcs living among various species of animal, moving from herd to herd. As he's aged, however, he's come to settle down in the University to share what knowledge he's learned. Only now, he must learn to live among the most difficult animals of all - people.

The Institute of Metaphysics is the smallest of the educational branches in the Viden Academy, and the Campus in Scalvoris is in no better shape. Its main purpose is to provide a safe and stable learning environment to those whose interests are geared towards the arcane and Immortals. Due to its stance on safety above all else, there are certain arcane disciplines which are considered to be taboo and practice of these arts will lead to expulsion from the Academy at the best and exile from the city entirely at the worst. The education of most arcane arts is theoretical with only those who truly excel being permitted to practice practical applications.

A small number of the Seekers from the Northern Cell in Viden have also travelled over to Scalvoris, as invited by the Academy. Primarily, they are here in order to study the strange phenomenon which has occurred over the previous seasons in the remote island nation. They believe that the Immortals and, as a result, Arcana, has caused the bizarre change in the landscape. As such, their main purpose at the present time is not to offer out classes in the magical arts, or in the Immortals. Part of the reasoning behind this is the taboo nature: the scholars do not yet fully know the people, and they are there under the strict guidance from Viden that they are not to risk damaging relations between Viden and Scalvoris. However, for the right student, classes may be offered in order to further knowledge (with the agreement of the leaders of Scalvoris). No magical learning is offered by any member of the Seekers as of Cylus, and no individual may be initiated into the Seekers, until relations between the two nations are stronger.

Arguably the largest Institute in the Academy, the Institute of Sciences houses the formal sciences of Mathematics and Logic, which are considered to be the purest subjects to study in the Academy, only taken on my the strongest of minds. The natural sciences of Biology Chemistry and Physics incorporate both the theoretical and applied topics associated with the traditional subjects, including medicine.

An unprecedented number of scientists have joined the cohort of scholars wishing to study Scalvoris - so much so that the Academy now wishes they had put a cap on the amount of applicants, as they are now suffering from lack of staff back in Viden. People from all levels (from students, right up to fully qualified professors) have made the journey across the Hollow Ocean to expand their fields of knowledge. With the permission of the leaders in Scalvoris Town, the Institute of Sciences is the first Institute to offer the full learning experience a student could receive in Viden.

Training in the sciences are strongly sought after, with hundreds seeking the chance to be students of the respected scholars in the Institute. They take the largest classes in theoretical topics, and are constantly striving to increase knowledge and prove theorems developed years ago. A smaller number are offered the chance to apply that which they learnt in a practical environment. Within the Biochemistry Department, academics work with many from all over the world to understand viruses and illnesses that ravage the unhygienic cultures, as well as creating anti-serums to work against the designs of Lisirra.

Often considered to be little more than a sub-department of the Institute of Sciences, Yvithia created this Institute specifically to honour her long-time friend and companion: Aeva, the Immortal of Technology. With the close links to the Institute of Sciences, this was the next Institute to open in Scalvoris, one Cycle after the opening of the Scalvoris Campus. Twenty academics were offered the chance to support Scalvoris with the rebuilding of their infastructure, which had suffered after the disappearance of the Pirate Lords. Arguably the most practical of the Institutes, it deals entirely in applied uses of science, and draws on many theoretical classes from it's parent Institute to teach its students. Those who graduate from the Institute of Technology are guaranteed a well paying job in almost any city across Idalos.

Scalvoris has become a melting-pot of culture - with the influx of people who have come from all all across Idalos, from all cities, races, religions, cultured and creeds. This unique position of Scalvoris was instantly noted by the current eídisi academics in Scalvoris, though it took a while to convince Yvithia to understand the benefit of allowing linguists to join the invasion of scholars from Viden. Any and all languages spoken on the terrain of Idalos, and their histories, are well documented in the extensive libraries of the Prime Atheneum, and some oceanic languages are also documented.

However it was noted, on a visit to the island nation from Yvithia, that some records of languages might be out of date, thus bringing rise to the notion that there is "perpetual instability within the standard, and languages are constantly evolving". Linguists arrived in Scalvoris one season after the opening of the Institute of Technologies. They came to study the wealth of modern dialects of the languages they thought they new so well. And, in exchange, they started to share their own knowledge with the people of Scalvoris. Not all are able to speak the languages of other races, but that doesn't mean that they cannot study them from an academic perspective. Core subjects such as Phonetics & Phonology, Syntax, Semantics, Sociolinguistics and Psycholinguistics are all on offer to be studied in all known living languages, and all dead languages.

The Institute of Humanities was opened just before the Institute of Arts, as the final stage in the transition and sharing of knowledge across these two nations, between which a very strong connection had been built. Their History Department is acclaimed as one of the finest sources of knowledge in the world, though facts regarding the history of Idalos (both before and after the Great Shattering) is shrouded in myth, so one perusing these thick tomes must be careful in what they chose as fact. Religion too, closely linked with the history, shares knowledge of the Immortals walking the lands of Idalos. Always keen to be objective in the sharing of information, scholars have been careful to avoid any untruths in their texts when recording details of the less favoured Immortals. However there will always be moments, particularly when it comes to Audrae. This disgust of Audrae, her foul race, and any allies to the Immortal, continues even in Scalvoris, who cannot persuade the scholars to be more reasonable. Finally, Geography and Politics are detailed by academics in the Institute of Humanities. Huge maps cover entire walls, decorated with intricate detail to guide travellers around the world.

The Institute of Arts was one of the final Institutes to be opened in the Scalvoris Campus. This was not a necessary move for Viden; there was no return on the knowledge of the Academy. However the Dean of the Academy deemed it necessary to make the final transition in order to cement the (now very strong) bond between the two nations. The courses offered by the Institute of Arts are naturally all rather scholarly, and reflect the desire to spread enlightened knowledge. These courses are all very in depth and seek to explore the more philosophical aspects of life. Though skills such as critical thinking (which is almost taught through osmosis by taking a course offered by these departments) are highly valued by Yvithia, the influence of Aeva has rubbed off on the Academy, and the qualifications received from this Institute are not as highly regarded as those from others. However it is a poorly kept secret that Yvithia has favoured those to graduate from this Institute, purely because of their perceived intelligence and academic prowess in gaining a qualification with little to no practical application.

Academy Qualifications

In order to become a student in the Academy of Viden, a prospective student must first pick a course of study. To do this, they must first chose the Institute, and then a specific subject which they might focus on (e.g. Alchemy, Architecture, Empathy, Linguistics, Medicine or Poisons). From there, they may begin their academic journey to achieve the highest qualification they dare to aim for. There are five levels of qualification, granted to those students who have successfully pursued their academic goals and finished their required courses, to possess one is a mark of status in educated society across Idalos and one might find employment opportunities open much easier. Even many shopkeepers in Viden have gained qualifications in Business.

Letter ∞

• Minimum of 25* pieces of Knowledge in the relevant topic.
• Minimum 2 seasons of study in Rynmere/Scalvoris/Viden/Rharne.

Certificate ∞

• Minimum of 30* pieces of Knowledge in the relevant topic.
• Minimum of 2 seasons of further study in Rynmere/Scalvoris/Viden/Rharne.

Diploma

• Minimum of 35* pieces of Knowledge in the relevant topic.
• Minimum of 2 seasons of further study in Rynmere/Scalvoris/Viden/Rharne.
• Teaching of at least one class to lower-level students.

Charter

• Minimum of 40* pieces of Knowledge in the relevant topic.
• Minimum of 3 seasons of further study in Rynmere/Scalvoris/Viden/Rharne.
• Teaching of at least 1 class to lower-level students.

Licentiate

If you start a qualification in Scalvoris and choose to continue in Viden or Rynmere, and vice versa, this is acceptable. Qualifications from the University of Rynmere and the Viden Academy are identical in terms of mechanics (they cost the same, and offer the same rewards), the only difference is stylistic roleplay choices. For example, Viden/Scalvoris are more prestigious on the whole, but Rynmere excels in certain areas.

Please PM a Local Prophet for approval before pursuing your qualification from the Viden Academy, Scalvoris Campus. This sort of thing must be approved from day one if your efforts are to be rewarded.[/font]

• Each season of study, at a Tertiary level, costs - regardless of the level of qualification that the student is aiming for. Please see The Shoppe for details
• Employees of the Academy (working and studying part-time) will be offered a discount on their studies. Classes may be accessed at 1 Tier above the PCs actual Tier on any season where working at the university is the pc's Wealth Thread. .
• Accommodation is not included.

Wage Bonuses

Given the sheer dedication and expense it takes for a student to gain any qualification from the Higher Education Facilities in Idalos, it is only reasonable that this be rewarded in some regard in terms of income. The University of Rynmere and the Viden Acadamy are well regarded institutions and thus any civilised employer would clamour to employ an ex-student. As such a qualified individual may enjoy certain perks. Although only guaranteed in Viden, Rynmere and Scalvoris

Rules of the Academy

• Please ensure you are comfortable with OOC and IC knowledge before beginning RP in the Academy.
• To complete a full season, one must write one thread of study in said season (two a cycle) or risk expulsion from the Academy.
• If your character cannot afford to pay fees but would like him/her to learn at the Academy then please PM the local Prophet, who will discuss your options with you..

IC Rules

• Those who are not registered students of the Academy, or affiliated with it in some other way, are limited in their access to facilities offered by the Academy.
• Study of Arcana is highly restricted and special permission must be sought from senior academics (and a Prophet) both to be taught and to study privately.
• Use of Arcana is limited to the facilities owned by the Institute of Arcana. Whilst all disciplines of Arcana are recorded, not all are permitted to be taught, and those which aren't are not to be practiced anywhere within the city limits. Hazardous use of Arcane Arts will be dealt with quickly and severely.
• Forgery of qualifications of any level from the Viden Academy is prohibited and is punishable by expulsion from the institution and, in extreme cases, exile from the city.
