In Need of a Friend

Zi'da 4th, 716
It was cold and dark and had begun to snow, the weather was best described as absolutely wretched. Of course the snow wasn't the problem, any who'd lived in Fort Gawyne long enough would be quite accustomed to the cold. What caused problems was the pitch black darkness that spiraled down streets. It wasn't quite night yet, more so late afternoon. But as the weather got colder so did the days end sooner. The dimness of cloud cover was no aid in the need for light either. This is where the problem of the day stemmed from.

Ivy raced down streets trying to get away as fast as she could. She'd walked down one wrong street and suddenly she was getting chased by a thug. Ivy couldn't decide what direction to go, it was cold and her feet slipped against the slick ground. She dreaded the thought of what would happen if they caught her considering all her money was left at home. Her breath came out in sharp misty puffs, the moister of frozen by the cold winter air. Dipping down streets she tried to shake her pursuer, she made the fairly foolish choice of dodging down an alley. Ivy quickly took the risk of glancing behind herself only to quickly realize her mistake. Her feet came spiraling out from under her as her body crashed towards the ground. "Ow," came a pained groaned. She looked at her hands to find then skinned, a dribble of red started to seep out of the scraped skin.

she glanced up seeing the figure she'd been running from. A thug approached leering down at her viciously. "Well, well, looks like I finally caught the little mouse. So mousey, where's your money?" He asked. The man was easily twice the size of the platinum blonde. He gabbed her by the wrists dragging her into the air. Ivy was extremely light weight, on the side of unhealthy, so it was an easy feat to pick up the woman.

"I don't have any," she whimpered, tears starting to sting at her blue green eyes. A shade of gray cast over the beauty of the watery blue green orbs making them appear fearful and broken. Panic spiked her heart as the man yanked her off the ground. She winced, the man had a grip like steel that threatened to break her wrists if her arms didn't get yanked out of their sockets first.

"No money? Of course you have money. A noble is supposed to be loaded with cash, so hand it over if you want to keep your life," he snapped more viciously. He started groping around her body looking for whatever coin she had on her. She really had no money with her! Ivy didn't make much money in a season, so she tried to save whatever she could. She especially needed to save considering Cylus was around the corner with the coming of Zi'da. What she had was stashed away in her simple house. She could always go grovel to her family, but she'd more or less lost ties with most of them the day she left to live by herself. There was little that could identify her as a noble, save for the splash of purple and a small pendant made of silver, the family crest stood on it proudly etched in sapphire.

"Guess I'll just have to take this," he said taking formerly mentioned pendant between his fingers. Ivy flinched as tears began to trail down her cheeks.

"No! Please, it's my mother's. It's the only thing precious that I own. Please don't take it," she cried trying to struggle out of grip.

"Stop moving!" The man yelled tugging on her once more. She yelped becoming still and shutting her eyes as tight as she could. It was all a bad dream, it was all just a bad dream. Everything had just been a bad dream and one day she was going to wake up. She'd be a kid again before anything bad happened and she'd have her family again. She would be able to grow up happy, live happy, marry happy, and finally die happy after creating her own happy little family.

After a couple moments passed and she reopened her eyes. Reality pressed heavy against her chest dragging her downwards, like someone had placed a weight within her breast and told her to swim. Everything was still there, everything that happened had still happened. She was doomed, doomed to the reality that she had forced onto herself. Oh, what a foolish child she'd been. In the end all of this was completely and truly her fault.

"Fine then, I won't take your petty little necklace. But you'll still have to give me something if you want to keep your life. And if I can't have money I know exactly what I want," the thug said with a terrible grin. His other hand moved downwards, slowly trailing her side. Obviously it had no intent to stop until it reached the hem of her dress. The motion was torture, slow and drawn out and disgusting. It hurt in a way she couldn't describe, being touched that way. It make her sick like she wanted to throw up. The desire to scratch and wash and burn the area tainted by the unwanted touch consumed her like the flames she wished to press against her tender flesh. Sadly if she tried she'd have to burn her whole body and soul as it was tainted long before this ugly thug had tried to have his way.

After a long, slow, painful span of time the man reached the hem of her dress. The look on his face was like an animal. Truly the man was an animal in the eyes of Ivy, he'd given in to the animistic desires every man and woman held dearly in their heart, waiting to crawl its way out and surface. Many things could cause this disgraceful beast to come out, but sex and war seemed to be the largest.

"Please, no, no no no no. Help!" She cried out her voice raising to a panicked screech as she begged. Her call summoned any that was willing to her side, hoping there was one person in this horrific world that would take pity on the poor broken creature grasped in the jaws of a monster. Ivy could feel her panic spiking more and more as a pain raked her chest. The pain stabbed her, right where her heart was. It was a sharp pain, sharp like the sense of fear that left a bitter taste in the back of her throat. "Please help me!" She cried out one more time as tears started to come out full force.

In Need of a Friend

Faith was on her way home, wrapping her coat around her against the early Zi'da chill. She didn't like the cold, she never had. But then, she never had because it had been a large part of her childhood and it was just too... well, cold. But, she was well aware that, if it was cold now, then it was going to be a lot colder before it warmed up. Watching her breath mist in front of her, she smiled a quiet smile as she pulled up her hood. It was more than the cold, she knew, she was keen to get home where it was warm. And where, of course, Padraig should be home already. She quickened her steps as she realised that the dark was falling even earlier than it had just a few trials ago; winter was most certainly catching hold.

She hurried her steps and felt the tingle of excitement in her stomach, a fluttering at the thought of getting home. She was keen to get back, to fling off her boots and pull on her warm slippers. She wondered what they would do this evening, if Padraig had any experiments he wanted to....

The sound of a scuffle came to her ears from a nearby alleyway and Faith stopped in her tracks. She listened, straining her ears as she tried to make out what she was hearing. No, that was definitely trouble. She breathed in and moved forward, careful and slow. There was absolutely no point in getting herself to a position where she was not able to help, and tactically she knew that she had to assess the situation. So, she tried her best to keep herself pressed to the wall and she cursed herself for not bringing a weapon. Why didn't she bring a weapon, she wondered. Although, why would she take a weapon to work, equally. But it was what it was and the pragmatic young woman cursed herself for a fool and then concentrated on moving with quiet footfalls, stealth being key.

Which was a shame, really, because she was rubbish at it. So, as she kicked the stone and the slight noise caused the thug to turn around, Faith sent a prayer to Famula, that the Immortal would care for this young woman. The one being held who seemed to be completely in a state of panic and really wasn't helping herself in the slightest, because the wriggling and the crying were encouraging him.

"Get lost you, me an' my girlfriend here are... oof"

Faith didn't really understand why it was that so many people, especially it seemed bad people, were prone to talking. Rather as though they thought that their words were going to scare anyone. Well, she supposed as she calmly stepped foward and kicked the man squarly and hard between the legs, they did scare some people, but she had always been of the opinion that actions were much more efficient. Certainly, where she had grown up, that had been the case.

The young woman who came into Ivy's view was probably not 20 arcs old, but close to it. She wore a good coat which was tightly buttoned and her long black hair was tucked under a hat. Her skin was white and her eyes were so pale they seemed to be silver. Short in stature, standing at five foot four, Faith had a distinct height disadvantage against him and so was closer to him when she kicked him than she would have liked to be. His response was immediate and instinctual. Releasing Ivy he turned and backhanded Faith across the face. She felt the sting of it hit her and she tasted the blood on her lips.

Damn.

Turning his attention to her, the thug snarled and went for Faith. His moves were not well rehearsed, he wasn't trained she noted, but in fact he seemed to rely on strength more than anything. That was fine by her, because she relied on speed. But she was going to have to take him down quickly, she knew, because he was bigger than her by about a whole other person and he was strong, judging by how her lip was bleeding. He roared, he charged at her and Faith waited until the last possible moment and then stepped to the side. As he charged past her, she stuck out a leg in an almost casual movement and he fell, crashing into the wall and sliding down it. Faith looked at Ivy and held out a hand to her.

"Are you alright? Come on, we need to get out of here. He won't be out long." As though to prove her right, the large man groaned.

In Need of a Friend

Ivy went numb her mind completely turning blank when she thought that no one was going to be coming. She became certain of the fact so her brain did the only thing in its power to protect itself, block everything out. She'd felt this way before, it was a fuzzy kind of feeling almost like being stuck in a snow storm. It wasn't cold but it wasn't warm either. The sensation was just kind of hollow. The numbing feeling quickly slipped into her body and her mind retreated back, trying to protect itself from the trauma of what she was certain would happen. She didn't want to remember, she neglected the real world completely folding in on herself. Hopefully she wouldn't remember.

She wasn't sure how much time passed. It could have been trills or trials for all she cared. In all truth it was a matter of bits if even that. She was shocked right back to reality as a sharp sense of pain flooded her body. When did she get on the ground? She looked around dazed only to find the man in pain and a woman. No, angel. No one had ever saved her before. This woman to answer her calls must have been some breed of angel. Ivy was no longer crying and freaking out but she was still shaking like a leaf and the pain in her chest had only gotten sharper. What was that called again? A panic attack? Yes, she believed that was a panic attack digging its claws into her chest and trying to rip out the weak and pathetic heart that quivered in fear when someone came to cause her trouble. How weak she'd become.

When her mind cleared a little further she looked up at the woman once more. Beautiful was the first thought to come to her mind. It wasn't necessarily the appearance of the woman that caused such an idea, more so it was the actions of the woman. A beautiful angel loomed down beating away the vicious and horrible monster that had threatened Ivy moments before. Her thoughts finally started to glue themselves back together as the angel said something. Get out of here were the only words that actually managed to filter into her mind. She looked at the hand stretched out to her with curiosity. Her mind despite having cleared greatly was still in a state of disarray. She took the hand offered to her hesitantly, confused as to why anyone would want to offer her a hand.

She allowed herself to be pulled back onto her feet, she wasn't much help getting herself there but due to her unhealthy weight it wasn't much of a problem to pull her up. Did she starve herself? Perhaps, but anxiety made it hard to eat sometimes thanks to the constant stomachaches that accompanied constant worry. She came to the realization seconds later that they were both suddenly running. Oh, right, that man had been trying to do... Something with her. That was the slap of reality that finally brought her completely back. "Who are you?" Ivy panted once they'd gotten a safe distance away from the unsavory thug. She wanted to ask why this woman had bothered to help someone like Ivy, but the answer was obvious. This woman either was an actual angel or got sick of Ivy's screaming like a pathetic little animal.

Ivy looked dazed up until the moment she found the strength to speak. Even after that moment there was a looming sense of confusion, just a different kind. She looked as though there were a million things she wanted to say, but she kept her mouth shut. Her necklace had managed to flip over when they were running leaving the back to face outward. Her clothes were covered in wet from her being dropped on the ground and dirt from the hands of the man. She truly looked pitiful, nothing would dare pose the idea that she was a noble. In fact she looked to be a member of lower class society judging by the plain clothes she wore and an evident lack of money.

In Need of a Friend

The woman was terrified and Faith could see that she was shaking like a leaf. She had a look of complete incomprehension, too and Faith worried for a few moments that she might be about to faint or just descend into hysterics. She understood that the woman was afraid, but equally she knew that they had to get out of there. Faith was slight, not strong herself and she didn't think that she could carry the woman who was much the same size and stature as herself. But the determined young woman decided that, if she had to, that would be what she tried to do. Better that than being here when he woke up, Faith thought. She'd had the element of surprise last time but now that he could tell that she was skills in combat, he'd be even more dangerous, undoubtedly.

But thankfully, carrying the terrified woman turned out not to be necessary as she took Faith's hand. Pulling her along, Faith ran. She made sure that she didn't run so much that she pulled the woman over, she made sure they went at her pace, but at the maximum of her pace. They made it out of the alley and into the streets and there, spying a bench that they could sit on, Faith led the young woman over. "Come on, sit down. We're fine here. My name is Faith, it's a pleasure to meet you", she smiled in an immediate reaction and then winced as she felt the stinging pain in her lip. Rummaging in her pocket, she pulled out a lace hankerchief and looked at it for a moment with a rather sad expression before holding it to her lip.

Looking at the woman she had helped, Faith shook her head slightly. "You're freezing and soaking. We can't have that. Where are you staying, where do you live?" She spoke with a kind tone, but she got the feeling that the woman still needed direct questions, she was still dazed and confused and shaking "Do you have somewhere you are staying? If not, we need to get you a room in an Inn and buy you some clothes. You'll catch your death otherwise." The whole time that she spoke Faith had the woman's hands in hers, rubbing them gently. She waited to see what the woman said, because only once she had something to go on would she know what to do or where to go.

In Need of a Friend

Ivy allowed Faith to lead her towards the bench. She let her feet to collapse under her as she tried her best to sit on the bench without falling on the bench. She succeeded for the most part. A look of guilt crossed her face when Faith smiled only to quickly wince. "I'm Ivy," she said in a hushed voice that was barely above a whisper. The quieter she was the less she stuttered, but sadly the harder it would be to hear her.

Freezing was an understatement, so was soaking. Ivy at this point couldn't really tell if she was freezing or not because her skin had gone numb from the cold. But she figured all things considered she must be. At least freezing was something she could deal with. The cold had been a constant part of her home, it would be a lie to say she hadn't dealt with worse condition. True she wasn't happy about them, but she'd dealt with worse. She couldn't stop shaking though. "I have a house in the city, I was on my way home when I got a-a-attacked," she tried to keep her voice from breaking for as long as possible. But in the end it finally came out. She had to force herself not to wince at how pathetic her own voice sounded. The disgust wasn't helping her condition any. There were so many emotions weighing heavy on her that she didn't know what to do with herself. So she sat, pretty much brokenly, trying to wait for some kind of directive. An order to guide her actions.

There was a strange, strange kind of feeling growing inside of her that made all the others upset. Fear, disgust, guilt, they all went ballistic and started screaming at her because of whatever this was. It felt familiar but she didn't have a word to describe it. She looked down at her hands which were still firmly grasped in Faith's. Happiness? Maybe, it wouldn't be an understatement to say Ivy hadn't been happy in years. She'd just been saved by a total strange who was now worrying about her, why wouldn't she be happy? The conclusion only caused her mind to reel further. Her own happiness ended up just confusing her. She should be feeling guilty, not happy. "I'm sorry, you got hurt because of me," she muttered quietly in a voice that sounded like it might crack at any moment. She felt like she should pull away from this woman, that she shouldn't dally in her presence. Such a kind and amazing woman didn't deserve to be wasting her time on Ivy! Faith seemed like she had thousands of things she could be doing that were better. Yet Ivy didn't have the strength to pull herself away. There was a warm kind of glow that made her feel better in the presence of this woman. Every part of her wanted to cling to the thought that someone might actually care about an unimportant stranger, and brat, like herself.

Why? Why would someone like this want to help someone like her? "I'm sorry for the trouble I've caused you," she breathed again. This time her voice did crack under the pressure of guilt, an emotion quite evident in her voice. The voice she was able to produce sounded like the pitiful tones of someone who was about to cry. That was obvious enough. Ivy hated no one in the world more than herself, why waste time on her? She felt guilty for anyone that bothered. "All I do is cause people trouble," she tacked on rather bitterly sinking in on herself. She wanted to cling to the warm glow, but she felt guilty for doing it. Happiness wasn't something she deserved, especially not coming from someone like Faith who should spend her time on much better people. Ivy just deserved to be discard, left to the alley wolves.

"Ivy? That's a very pretty name", she smiled and spoke gently, her voice soothing. "Alright, well let's get you to your home, then, shall we? Then, I'll draw you a warm bath and whip you up something warm to eat." Faith smiled at her and stood, offering her hand. "Come on, you haven't caused any trouble at all. He caused the trouble, I'd say. You didn't strike me, he did. You didn't attack you, he did. We'll get back to your home and get you wrapped up warm, alright?".

She knelt down on her heels then, in front of Ivy and very serious silver eyes looked at the young woman. "You're too cold and you're not thinking clearly is all. It's just shock. Believe me, I have been there and someone helped me. I consider it appropriate and fair that I do the same. One trial, maybe you'll help someone too, and then we can just keep kindness moving on. Now. Here, I'm just going to put these on for you, alright?" She put a pair of warm, thick wool gloves on to Ivy's trembling hands and smiled at her, encouragingly. "Come on then, lets get you home, now"

Leading Ivy to stand, Faith looked at her and smiled "You'll need to tell me where you live, I'm afraid, Ivy. You lead us?" She spoke softly and linked arms with the woman, partly to keep her standing and partly to keep her warm. She walked with her and as they walked, Faith talked, with the aim of keeping the woman from the constant stream of self-despair that seemed to pour from her. "So, you live here. Me too. How long have you lived here? I've been here about an arc and a half, I suppose." She spoke softly, but her voice was determined. "So, come on then, how close are we? As soon as we get you home, we'll get you in warm clothes and in front of the fire." She smiled a kind smile and hoped that the young woman would start to pull herself together soon. It would make getting there a lot quicker and would be much, much easier on her, too.

In Need of a Friend

Ivy was at the least shocked. How could a total strange be so kind to someone like her? Of course it stood to reason this person knew nothing, she knew absolutely nothing about what Ivy had done to deserve this. Ivy was just a disgusting little creature, but she needed the support and the comfort. She allowed the gloves to be put on her hands, they were warm and her fingers tingled slightly as feeling started to come back to them. How could there be someone so nice? There had to be some kind of catch. If there was she'd happily be tricked. Ivy allowed herself to get lost in the kindness. It would be no understatement to say that she was desperate for any semblance of positive emotion no matter the true intent of the person giving it to her. Of course that was exactly what got into that situation all those years ago.

"Right," Ivy said when words shocked her out of her semi dream like state of thought. She led the way down streets her eyes always darting about cautiously. Her confidence had slowly perked up now that she wasn't walking down cold, dark streets all on her own. "I moved here roughly two arcs ago when I turned 18. I wanted as far away from home as possible for a couple different reasons. Now I kind of just miss my family. It's a strange mix of longing regret and being glad that I left. I don't know where I would be if I stayed with my family. I might be happier for all I know, but at least I tried to grow up and be my own person," Ivy said obviously coming back to her senses. She hadn't been able to talk to someone in such a relaxed way for years. Her voice didn't shake and she wasn't shriveling up in fear. She was almost proud.

Part of her statement was a lie. She did know what her life would be like had she'd stayed with her parents. For the years of her life after the event her family had treated her like a doll, something valuable and easy to break. Yet what was the value of a doll that couldn't be played with? Her siblings saw that so they tried to drag her out of the shell she'd set up around herself. Her mother was scared to even touch her, like the gentlest breeze might shatter her precious daughter in thousands of pieces. Her dad, her dad had blamed himself. He never gave up the hunt and still hadn't given it up. But how could they find a man when they didn't know what he looked like? Ivy could feel her being start to break whenever she thought about him, she never described his appearance to her family. That made the hunt virtually impossible on top of the fact he'd disappeared into thin air. All Ivy could do was hope that she never saw him again.

"Y-yeah. We're almost there," she squeaked at Faith's next question. "Here we are," she finally said walking up to a small doorway. She unlocked it and swung open the door which gave way with a little bit of trouble. The building wasn't bad, there could be a lot worse. But it was obviously the cheapest thing someone could get in midtown. Her parent's would never have her living in lowtown. The house, if it could be called a house, was as cheap as you could get though. In fact it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say it belonged in lowtown, someone had just plucked it out of lowtown and placed it into midtown. If anything the building was more of a room. There was a bed and a table on one side. A "wall" separated it from something that could be called a kitchen if one was so inclined to be nice. There was one door off to the side which led to what could be assumed a bathroom.

Ivy didn't look shabby, at least not as shabby as she should living in a place like this. A blush quickly ran across her cheeks as she realize just how horrible her little hovel must look to a stranger. "Uhh," she said not really sure what else to say. There was also the problem she was wearing her only set of cloths. She'd recently thrown out some that'd gotten just far too old and her pay check didn't often allow her to buy more. She'd been intending to when she got a second job, but that second job continued to avoid her grasp.

"This is it," she finally said quietly.

In Need of a Friend

Ivy started to speak more, to sound more confident and Faith gave a silent prayer of thanks to Famula for the mercy that this soul might be finding her way back to coherence and some confidence. She listened as she spoke of leaving her family home and stepping out on her own. Faith smiled slightly, but made no comment. She had no frame of reference, after all for any of the things that Ivy was talking about. She just didn't understand it, but it sounded like Ivy had been determined and brave, to Faith's mind. But then they continued walking and soon reached Ivy's house.

"Here we go. Home again" Faith said, with a smile. She looked around the house and smiled "Well, this is a nice place. So, why don't you go and get those clothes off. I'll start up a fire for you, but then I'll have to go, it's getting late and my.." Her what? Her boyfriend (was he that?) or partner (might be that, not quite sure) or aged sibling (acted like that most of the time) in a young man's body? It was quite a conundrum and so Faith settled with what she knew "My housemate will be worried." Faith knelt in front of the fireplace and got going on setting the fire. Ivy hadn't told her that she didn't have any other clothes, but if she did Faith would suggest putting on her nightgown or, if all else failed, she would give the young woman her cloak. But surely, there would be a nightgown that she wore? Especially in this cold. Anyhow, she got on with the fire and smiled over to Ivy.

"I'm sorry not to be able to stay longer. But the fire is warm, you'll dry quickly now. Get yourself something warm to drink, too" In the light of the room, and with her cloak off, Faith's slave brands were much more evident. Possibly reason why she did not bat an eyelid at Ivy's home. She'd lived in worse; a lot worse. "Are you going to be alright here?" She didn't want to leave Ivy if she was upset or not alright in some way, but she was aware that Padraig would start to worry.

In Need of a Friend

At the very least Ivy had a nightgown. "I'll be fine now," Ivy said trying to sound confident. She couldn't stop her voice from giving it's usual waver however. She shut her mouth and clenched her jaw. Sweet Immortals did she ever sound pathetic. The words burned in her own ears for a moment and a spark of anger lit against herself. She really was worthless, completely and absolutely useless on all levels. Faith should have just left the little creature to rot. A second horror in her life might have even snapped her back to her senses the same way the first snapped her out of them! Of course she knew it didn't work that way but she was getting so sick of her own nonsense. She bit on the inside of her cheek slightly, threatening herself with the idea of drawing blood.

"Really, I don't want to be anymore trouble then I already have been," she said with a small attempt at a smile. "Please tell me if there's anything I can do to repay you," she quickly added on with an embarrassed look. Just add another person onto the list of people she owed for causing them problems. That list had first started with her family and now it was getting to be way too long for comfort. She wasn't sure how she was going to pay them all back though.

"Maybe I'll see you again?" She asked with a small tilt of her head and a tiny but genuine smile. She however quickly turned away knowing that such an idea was a rather greedy one. She didn't deserve to meet such a kind and amazing woman again. At least not until she had the strength to become one herself. If such a thing could or would ever happen that is. "Bye," she whispered in a quiet voice, the strength of her vocal cords once more failing her as her sound wavered pathetically. This time she barely held back a crack from her voice. How disgusting. She turned her head away slightly internally chastising herself while the other woman left. She had to be older, and yet she acted like such a child.

Perhaps tomorrow would be a better day.

Comment: Faith to the rescue! No issues with Story, Collaboration or Structure. I loved to see Faith rescue Ivy, and I was very impressed to see her take down a man twice her size. Good job with this story and taking care of Ivy, it was exciting and sweet. Lovely read and I look forward to seeing some more from the two of you together. Enjoy the points!
