A Lecture on the Barriers

Image
Saun 3, Arc 724

It had been a while since Doran had stood within a lecture hall. Most of his recent work had been conducted in the field. His research trips had taken him back behind the Barriers, and to places that had been almost as strange. He had often returned empty-handed, and he still hadn’t managed to do what he’d promised Enri and his father Xiur to do. He still hadn’t managed to bring Fei back, but he did at least have some sort of lead now. He had a vague idea on what his next step needed to look like and where he needed to go next.

Amidst it all, he had let the Chancellor convince him to hold a lecture on his research. His plan to resurrect Fei would remain a secret for now – it was, likely, a rather controversial topic – but he’d agreed to talk about his experience with a place where no magic worked, a place where a dragon lived, and people spoke a language that nobody in the rest of the world did. He acknowledged that such things should be shared with the scientific community.

It also made him feel less guilty about not having been there when Scalvoris had been in need.

The Pirate Lords had returned …

This time, not only students from the Institute of Sciences would be in attendance, but also students, and professors, from other institutes, and for that reason, he’d opted for an outfit that was a little less plain than what he usually wore, an outfit to fit the topic of his lecture.

He was wearing the dusk-colored suit he’d been given in Saoire’s own domain of Telka, and a black cloak that seemed to be made of deep black crow feathers was loosely draped across his shoulders so that some of the shimmering dark blue scales on his upper body were visible.

He didn’t only want to tell people what had happened behind the Barriers, he wanted to show them.

Sometimes, you needed to see in order to truly believe.

For a moment, he wondered what Llyr would say to the changes he had gone through – his former lover had always seemed fascinated by such things – but he had been gone for arcs now and was unlikely to ever come back. The feelings he had once had for him had finally faded, but a kind of curiosity had remained. What kind of life was Llyr living now?

He organized his notes that were lying on the desk in front of him and reread what he had written so that he would be able to talk about the topic of his lecture relatively fluently and not make any awkward pauses while more and more people entered the room. He occasionally inclined his head in greeting, or smiled slightly, when he noticed a familiar face.

Tag Fridson, a valued colleague, and perhaps more, that had been by his side during the Forging and helped him with his research, was there as well.

The look on his face brightened visibly for a moment.

A moment later, when he saw that the lecture hall was full, he pulled his gaze away from him and began to speak.

Re: A Lecture on the Barriers

“Some of you may know me”, he said. “For those of you that don’t, I’m Doran Thetys, Professor of Alchemy and Dean of the Institute of Sciences in Viden. I’m also one of the people that took part in the Forging. The hair is a relatively new addition and not a fashion choice”, he pointed out, smirked and let a hand run through his hair that was definitely not black anymore. A few members of the audience laughed.

He waited for the laughter to stop before he continued, “I agreed to talk about a relatively recent research trip of mine. Some of you may think there are no new discoveries to be made after all those centuries, but the world is still full of secrets. And that is encouraging. That is something that may give us hope, even in the darkest times.”

“The world is ever-changing, and ever evolving.”

He paused again, picked up a piece of paper from his desk and held it up.

“I’ve listed the most important points of my lecture and summarized what I will be talking about on these handouts. You should find one in front of you. If you don’t have one, please let my research assistant Plia know”, he told them and gestured towards a young Eidisi woman that was sitting in the front row. She smiled shyly when she heard her name.

“You will also find a short bibliography and references to previous research on your handouts. One of the scientists that contributed to this particular field, the first woman to ever go behind the Barriers, has unfortunately left us last arc”, he continued.

“I’d like to ask you for a moment of silence for Professor Faith Augustin”, he said and bowed his head. Most people in the room immediately followed his example. Some of them even folded their hands in prayer as they thought of the woman who had still been so very young.

After a few trills, he looked up again. When it seemed as if most of the audience was watching him again, he told them, “There are four barriers at the edges of the world. They are connected to Emea, and you are currently only able to pass through them in a hypnagogic state. The Eastern Barrier was discovered by Padraig Augustin in 717. His wife, the late Faith Augustin joined him on his second and third trip, in 718 and 719 respectively. The fact that the dragons were released into this world delayed their fourth trip by more than an arc”, he continued and paused.

“They invited me to accompany them on that fourth trip when it finally took place. I first went behind the Barriers in late 721. Varlum Onarmus who some of you may know as well came with us. I recently went behind the Barriers again”, he informed them before he moved on to some of the discoveries that had been made behind the Barriers.

Re: A Lecture on the Barriers

“When travelling to the barriers, there is a moment when the world literally changes. The placement of the stars literally shifts. Calm waters become a storm. Magic, marks and mortalborn powers – and items with some kind of enchantment on them - stop working. Alchemy however doesn’t”, he pointed out which caused some of the members of the audience to murmur. Why did alchemy work there, but magic didn’t?

“Furthermore, there is no ether present behind the Barriers. In fact, it seems to drain which causes Mortalborns to slowly die”, he said. The expression on his face remained perfectly polite and calm as he said that. In truth, he had been worried when they had gone behind the Barriers, in spite of the fact that they had eventually come up with a solution.

A solution that had kept him alive.

“There are people behind the barriers, humans. They speak a language that doesn’t seem to be related to any other languages in Idalos. You will find a few words and phrases in that language on your handouts. Whether that language is related to any extinct languages on our side of the Barriers is a matter that needs to be studied further”, he admitted.

He was, likely, one of the most accomplished scientists in Idalos, but linguistics weren’t his specialty. His focus had always been more on history and alchemy than on languages.

“I also met another race. They look like bipedal bears and are called Stroldinur. Judging by what I’ve learned so far, they are not in any way related to our Cadouri, but unique to the lands behind the Barriers. They wear clothes and are capable of speech which suggests a high intelligence, comparable to ours. The Augustin’s research doesn’t mention the Stroldinur. We only met them on our joint trip”, he said.

“And then there was of course Frosvinndur, the Lord of Winter Winds, a dragon. He granted me his Effigy. An Effigy is not entirely different from an Immortal’s mark, but it is more powerful, and that is why the changes that a Bearer goes through are more profound. My new hair color and the changes to my eyes and my skin are a result of that. Can anybody lend me a handkerchief, by the way?” he abruptly wanted to know which caused a few members of the audience to look at him in confusion.

Professor Fridson immediately stood and brought a blue and white handkerchief to his desk though.

“I apologize for disappearing and putting a temporary stop to our shared research”, Doran whispered to him. He didn’t usually harbor such feelings, but he couldn’t help but feel a little guilty now. “I’ll try to make it up to you. Wait for me after the lecture?”

When the mortal nodded, he smiled slightly before he raised the handkerchief. “Watch me now, ladies and gentlemen”, he asked his audience and proceeded to breathe out an icy mist that instantly froze the handkerchief, rendering it stiff. He dropped it, and it landed on the floor with a clanking sound. “An interesting little trick, don’t you think?” he remarked, hoping that said “trick” had the intended effect.

He wanted to end what had been rather serious lecture on a complex topic on a lighter note.

Some of the younger members of the audience seemed to be intrigued, and a few even applauded, he noticed.

He smirked and bowed slightly.

“In case anybody has questions now, I’ll be here for the next thirty bits in order to answer them. If you’d rather talk to me in private, you can come to my office here at the university during my usual breaks”, he offered before he braced himself for the possible onslaught of questions.

Dealing with all those questions, some of which even he was hard-pressed to answer, was exhausting, especially since he hadn’t done something like that in cycles, and thus he was relieved when the last person had left the lecture hall, and he was finally able to depart himself. He had almost feared that Professor Fridson had lost patience and gone home in the meantime, but the mortal who was already familiar with some of his research was still there, standing in the hallway and waiting for him.

“I apologize”, he said. “The questions just kept on coming.”

“You don’t have to tell me!”
Professor Fridson replied and laughed. “I know what it’s like. Or did you forget that I teach here as well? You could attend one of my classes, you know? You may just discover something new about the Original Beings!” he tried to tempt him.

“I just might”, Doran agreed. “Speaking of Original Beings, I would appreciate it if you joined me at the Knight’s Rest for dinner this evening. We could discuss my research and my next research trips, one of which I’d love for you to join me on, if you are interested. There is no pressure, of course”, he added in a calm tone of voice in case the other man felt obligated.

Professor Fridson only smiled though before he said, “I’d love to come. Have you ever visited the Shrine of Fei, by the way, Doran? I know that we talked about it once, but talking about it isn’t the same as seeing it”, he pointed out as they walked through the university together, chatting animatedly, before they parted ways, until the evening.

Feedback

While not many of Yvithia's domains were really pushed or observed here, I'll grant that she probably appreciates communication of new information, and also someone giving lectures at her academy. So this qualifies for Xypha imo.

That said, I enjoyed the lecture, and found it rather informative. At least I would if I didn't know much about what happened during those plots. Although Doran didn't go into too much detail about the particulars, he gave a good overview here.

I wonder if he ever thought about trying his racial alchemy on the bear people while there?? That might be an interesting opportunity. Or even test out the blood of the dragon?

Anyway good thread, I enjoyed it much.
