[Saiore's Dream] Meeting the family

Meeting the family

Winston placed the wonky drinnking receptacle on the side to cool, clipping the long, soft length of glass from the handle he had affixed to the side.

It was the first of Saun and the celebrations held totrial involved
gifts of glass for the immortals and quit a lot of drinking
. He was not really all that interested in the drinking, but the gift giving was a definite win.

He had been struggling however, as he looked at his attempt at a drinking receptacle, he was less than impressed. He was currently in Faldrass and with his drinking glass sitting, which was less than clear, sitting beside the perfectly clear, bell-shapped Blue-sand Glass wind chimes... the contrast was stark.

Joe studied the collection of glass objects closely. "It really makes a big difference being in Sweetsong doesn't it?"

"Yuh nat wrange, mun." The Blue-sand Glass was far too difficult for him to work outside of Sweetsong. He looked at his crooked drinking glass. He could just about shape normal glass by himself, but the bells he had made with the help of the settlers of Sweetsong and Vega's flag were quite beautiful and rang pleasantly as they tinkled together in the breeze. He desperately wanted to work some alchemy into them, to make them stronger, but right now, he considered alchemy with a material he could barely even shape without assistance was not likely to end in success.

The pair heared Angela's voice calling out from down the hall. "Wiiiiiiiiinnnsstoooooooon! We are going to be laaaaaaate!" Her tone was light-hearted and helpful. Getting irritated at Winston for getting lost hin his work would lead to a very stressful relationship and so she had come to terms with his poor timekeeping a long time ago.

"OH! Our meetin' wid Tristaan an' Ayla! COOOOOOOMMMIIIIIIIINNNNNN'!!!!" He gasped as he quickly wrapped up the bells in some straw and put them gently into a box.

"OK, lets goh!"

Thus, Winston, Joe and Angela set off to find their friends, wandering the halls of Sairoe's Dream with
Chest
in tow.

Waiting for Tristan

Waiting in the main reception area, where the portals from all over Idalos opened for those looking to visit Saiore's Dream to learn, it didn't even occur to him that Saiore would mind her portals being used for this gathering. They were exchanging gifts, learning about each other and the very special trial of giving for the Immortals. It seemed like the very perfect reason to use Saiore's gifts.

His invitation to Tristan had read:

"Dear Tristan and Ayla,

It would be a great pleasure to receive you on the 1st of Saun if you were able to come.

This trial in Scalvaris is a great celebration to the Immortals and by tradition, offerings of glass are given to them in thanks and respect. There are also a lot of fun parties.

If you were able to come, I'm sure there will be lots of fun to be had.

All the very best of joy to you both!

Winston."

As his two new friend came into view, he leapt up, waving frantically. Angela,
somewhat more reserved
, smiled and followed behind him.

"Tristaaaan! Aylaaaaa! Ova 'ere!" He ran up to them. "Welcome tuh Saiore's Dream!" He proclaimed, holding his arms out wide, presenting the walls of the school around them. "'ow are yuh both? Me cannat tell yuh 'ow excited me 'ave been tuh meetcha." He said, mostly to Ayla. "Dis es Angela. Angela, dis es Tristan and Ayla."

Angela did a little curtsy. "It's lovely to meet you. Winston has not stoped talking about you for trials." She explained, kindly.

"Cum, quick. Dis way. Me gat anodda partal far yuh an' we will be en Sweetsang!"

Re: [Saiore's Dream] Meeting the family

Image
When Winston had invited him to Scalvoris, Tristan had almost immediately decided to take the opportunity. He was looking forward to seeing his friend again; and besides, it had been arcs since his family and he had had a proper holiday. There had always been too much to do. There was still so much to do – Tristan wanted to do nothing less than to return the fallen kingdom of Rynmere to its former glory and give all those that were lost a new home – but always working ultimately only made you burn out. Of course, he also wanted to continue his education while he was on Scalvoris – he doubted that Saoire would be happy with him using her portal if he didn’t come to Faldrass to learn something.

Faldrass. Once upon a time, being in such close proximity to a volcano would have made Tristan uncomfortable, but he had dealt with far more dangerous things over the course of the previous couple of arcs, including the Creep. He merely found his new environment fascinating; and there was a look of childlike wonder on his face as he stepped through the portal into the reception area of Saoire’s Dream, his daughter’s small hand in his.

Ayla laughed with delight when she noticed the rainbows of light, and a moment later, she let go of Tristan’s hand and ran over to one of the many desks that were in the reception area. “Look, daddy!” she said and pointed at the tunawa-sized desk in front of her. “This looks like it could fit into my dollhouse! Daddy, can I have …” she continued. She wanted to ask Tristan if she could have a miniature desk for her dollhouse (Not this particular desk of course, because that would be stealing, and stealing was bad!) when she noticed something even more interesting than all the little desks.

She pointed excitedly at Winston who was moving in their direction – and at Chest.

“That’s Winston, the cadouri I told you we’d be meeting”, Tristan said with just as much excitement as his daughter. A moment later, the duke that was dressed in a nice light blue suit shook Winston’s and Angela’s hands – and nudged Ayla who was still staring at Chest, her blue eyes incredibly wide, so that she would do the same. “It’s good to see you again, Winston. I’m pleased to mee you, Angela. What has Winston been saying about me, if you don’t mind me asking?” he wanted to know and smiled at her.

Ayla who was dressed in a white sundress and had a matching bow on her head politely shook Winston’s and Angela’s hands before she went right back to staring at Chest who fascinated her even more than the cadouri (And cadouri were normally pretty interesting in her opinion!).

Finally, she couldn’t contain her curiosity anymore and asked Winston and Angela, pointing at Chest as she did so, “What’s that?”

A moment later, both Ayla and Tristan followed Winston to the portal to Sweetwine. Both of them were looking forward to visiting Winston’s home!

Re: [Saiore's Dream] Meeting the family

Every party is a Tea Party
Angela giggled. "Oh, only good things, of course. Mostly he's been excited to show you his Alchemical food. He says that you are a most talented Alchemist AND..." She turned toward his daughter. "He was very pleased to hear that you liked your cake-flavoured wind chimes." She beamed.

"Oh dis es my gud friend
Chest
!"
The locomotive luggage bimbled a little closer and tilted towards her, opening its lid slightly and lolling its tongue out to one side like a lazy dog. "'im es very friendly." He leant towards the girl and whispered. "And 'im es full af cake ef yuh fancy some. Jost ask."

if the girl had the courage to do so, Chest would produce some cake, upon a plate, holding it out on the end of its enormous, singular oral appendage.

"Ef yuh like, yuh cun ride 'im tuh Sweetsang?" He gestured for her to get on before clambering up there himself. It was of course possible that the girl was beyond such childishness... but if not, Chest would patently wait for the girl to climd aboard before they set off!

As they approached the portal, Winston spoke with a sly smile to his friend, keeping his voice low so that Ayla might not hear. "Jost an 'eads up... Et's a bit crazy, but yuh perfectly safe."

In Sweetsong

It might be that just perhaps Winston had mentioned that he was having visitors from a distant land totrial as they returned to Sweetsong, because as they emerged from the doorway (that he himself had used to get to Saiore's Dream), they were surrounded by Fairies of all kinds.

"Welcome tuh Sweet! SAAAANG!" He declared as he swept his arm over their surroundings. There was a campsite with vardos and people in the distance and right here, there was a clearing and a lot of fairies, which all started shouting.

"YAY! Winstaaaaaan!"

There was tinkling, dancing and even the gentle sound of music. As the ferret guided them through the crowd, he offered a little advice. "De fud does strange tings tuh yuh, but et's all safe an' temporary. Jost let me know ef yuh fancy someting less 'eventful'."

One particular fairy darted up to them, approaching Ayla first with a tinkle, a summersault and a giggle. "Welcome and salutations young traveller of the Eldar Alchemist! My name is Kelpie! How fair you this fine trial?"

She then whisked over to Tristan with a smile. "Would you care for a berrie?" She asked, offering him an assortment of different coloured berries.
Fairy Berries
Blueberries - Turns you blue.
Huckleberries - Causes hiccuping and bouncing in the air.
Cloudberries - Makes you completely weightless so that you might float and even blow away in the breeze.
Youngberries - Turns you into a child, around a few archs old, just out of toddler stanges. Changes your size/mass to that of an average child of your race. Bearberries - Turns you into a giant, stuffed teddy-bear.
Elderberries - Ages you to within a few months of your race's natural maximum life span, with all typical ailmnets (e.g. poor eye'sight and/or things like arthitus).
Wolfberries - Turns you into a wolf. Your size/mass does not change.
Buffaloberries - Turns you into a waterbuffalo. Your size/mass does not change.
While this went on, Chest wondered into the clearing and sat itself down on the grass. It seemed perfectly at home amidst the fluttering creatures, as did the Cadouri and once they had all settled themselves down, Winston offered them another invitation. "Ef yuh will hop down far a moment, me will take yuh tuh me house." He asked of the young girl.

Assuming she did as requested, as fairies landed upon her shoulder, giggling and chattering away, chest opened once more, but this time there were no teeth and no tongue. "Dat es were me live... Inside af Chest." He smiled.

If either of them looked into the chest, where its bottom should be was an opening into Winston's workshop.

Re: [Saiore's Dream] Meeting the family

“Oh, thank you“, Tristan said with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes when Angela told him that Winston had called him a most talented alchemist and bowed slightly.

Next to him, Ayla perked up at the mention of the cake-flavored wind chimes and asked, “Will there be more?”

A moment later, she looked at Chest again. When it moved a little closer and opened its lid, she let out a squeal of delight before she proceeded to pet it, much like her dog, Fluffy.

“Hello, Chest. I’m Ayla”, she said. “How are you? Can I have some cake, please? Can you talk?” she wanted to know. If Chest had some sort of mouth and a tongue, it could talk, right?

Tristan had met Chest before, but he found it just as fascinating as before. He watched with a huge grin on his face as Ayla took the offered plate with cake – only slightly hesitantly – and curtsied awkwardly in order to thank it before she stuffed the cake into her mouth.

Ayla was the daughter of an Immortal, and she might have become a Duchess one trial if a dragon hadn’t taken over Rynmere, but she was still a little girl, so, when Winston offered her the opportunity to ride Chest, she quickly climbed aboard before she told Tristan,

“Come, daddy! You can ride Chest as well!”

Tristan shook his head. “I don’t think that Chest would appreciate three people on its back. We might be too heavy for it”, he told her, secretly wondering when Ayla would ask him if she could have a Chest of her own. Upon hearing Winston’s warning, his eyebrows rose a bit, but he didn’t say anything. They were perfectly safe after all, right?

~~~
When they arrived in Sweetsong, and all the fairies started shouting, Ayla momentarily looked a little unsure, climbed off of Chest’s back and hid behind her father – she was still slightly shy every once in a while. A moment later, the little Mortalborn clapped her hands in delight and exclaimed, “YAY! Fairies!” though.
When Kalpie introduced herself, she giggled and told her, “I’m great! I’m Ayla! Can you teach me to fly? I think mommy could fly”, she added. Syroa had been an Immortal, and Immortals could do all kinds of stuff, right?
“Oh, thank you, Kelpie!” Tristan said when she offered him a berry and picked a blueberry. A moment later, he turned completely blue, much to Ayla’s excitement. When she told him that he was blue – in between giggles – he examined his hands and grinned all over his face.
“I have to say that this is a wonderful berry, Kelpie!”
To Winston, the still blue duke said, “Do you think the fairies would appreciate a bunch of hair from a four-eyed dog? I also have a few moukou beans. They are very sweet and can make you fall asleep!” They had talked about fairies before, but he wanted to make absolutely sure that he didn’t give them the wrong gift and offend them.
Both Ayla and Tristan followed Chest’s example and sat down in the grass. The duke and his daughter were completely comfortable in the company of the fairies and looked around excitedly. Ayla chatted with the fairies that had landed on her shoulder – until Chest opened.
When Winston told her that he lived inside of Chest, she furrowed her brow before she asked worriedly, “Does having a person inside of it hurt Chest?” Having a person walk around inside of you couldn’t be pleasant. At the very least, it probably gave you a bad case of heartburn!
“He’s probably magical!” Tristan guessed before he looked into Chest. A moment later, his eyes widened so much that they threatened to drop out of their sockets. He was quite eager to explore Chest, but he wouldn’t do so without Winston’s explicit permission.
So, both Ayla and Tristan looked at Winston, their eyes wide, and asked, “May we …?”
Flying lessons!
He chucked when Ayla asked about the chimes and gave her a wink. "Ef yuh want dere tuh be. Tell yuh wat... Ef yuh tell me wat yuh most favorite fud eva es, me cun make some dat tastes af dese far yuh." He beamed, happy to have already firmly established what her Gifting Trial gift might be.
Sadly, Chest could not talk, but rather than act falawn about this, it let out a creaking sound from its hing and thumping sound from somewhere deep within it's bowls in an attempt to please the girl. It tilted to one side as if to query if that would do...
When Tristan declined a ride on Chest, the ferret cupped a hand over his mouth in a mocked attempt to whisper to the his daughter. "Me tink yuh dad's butt es a little bit, totally to massive tuh carry." He nodded and gestured toward the offending glutes with an appraising eyebrow raised to her.
In Sweetsong
When Ayla asked if she could learn to fly, two things happened...
First, Kelpies eye nearly popped clear out of her head with excitement as she expressed her delight at the idea and began looking for the girls wings. "Where are your flutteries? You'll need flutteries if you are going to fly..."
Secondly, Winston caught Tristan's attention for a moment and asked. "Wud et be OK tuh let 'er become a fairy far a little bit?" He deliberately did so in such a way that would allow Tristan to decline the offer without losing face, should he wish.
If he suggested that it would be fine, Winston would announce it with glee. "You know bigguns don't have wings Kelpie! Don't be so wispy."
"I do? Oh. I thought you just mean the boooring ones." She replied as she poked out her tongue.
The ferret scampered over to the girl,
offering her a tiny bell
. "'ere, take dis an' tink af bin' a Fairy. Me will need et back latta, sarry, bot et will allow yuh tuh be a Fairy far a bit an' take some flyin' lessans." If she took it, and did thus, she would find herself transformed into a Fairy, but a few inches in height and close to weightless. "Et will last far as lang as yuh want, soh ef yuh don't like et, yuh cun jost change right back." He gave the girl a reassuring smile, but left the choice entirely up to her.
Fairy Ayla
You can feel free to invent and describe Ayla's Fairy form if Tristan chooses to allow it. :-)
His daughter was not the only one that found the blue man amusing, as the fairies all around them giggled and celebrated as the fun began. Winston took a gingerbread biscuit and took a bight... he turned ginger.
"Oh you are most exceedingly welcome. There's a lot more to choose from if you want more." Replied Kelpie. There was no pressure, but the impish grin the tiny creature adopted suggested that she would find it most amusing if he did.
When he offered hair and food the Fairies in earshot gasped. "Four eyes? Are you sure it's not just two people in a dog costume?" Asked one inquisitive little chap.
"Oh yes PLEASE! I'd LOVE some!" Said another.
"Oh dem like anytin' unusual."
If Tristan produced the hair, the Fairy would take it and quickly weave it into their hat and strike a jaunty pose. "Hay, Lollie! Does it make me Looky? Does it?"
"Wow! Yeah! I'd say so. Can only BE Looky with four eyes!" The two of then fluttered around each other giggling and swappign hats.
"What do you think?..." They finally asked Tristan, hovering a few inches from his nose... Personal space was not apparently something the Fairy had any awareness of.
When the alchemists daughter asked such a thoughtful and insightful question about Chest's well being, Winston smiled. He was really growing to like these people. Ayla was obviously a very caring person... Someone well worth meeting.
"Noh, me es very confident dat et does nat 'urt Chest at all. En fact, 'im don't really like et wen me don't goh inside far too lang." He leaned in towards the girl to whisper in her ear. "Dem actually gets very jealous ef me use any odda luggage ar sleep anywhere odda den inside dem."
When asked if they ey enter, he replied. "OH! We MAY!" He proclaimed and leaped in.
From outside, the ferret would now appear to be standing on the wall, as if gravity was turned on it's side. He waved for them to follow.
There was a whirlwind tour, as he showed them the shop-front into which they entered and then the kitchen, his Smith and Alchemical forge, swimming pool and laboratory.
His Forge was peppered with works in progress and designs were plastered all over the walls.
Every room had a story if they asked and Winston seemed most pleased of all with the Kitchen, which was very much set out as the hub of his entire life, with ingredients and equipment the likes of which one might only usually see in the
very highest of quality and exclusive restaurants
.
On every wall and in every corner there were little shelves and tables where Fairies could, and did, perch as they wandered around inside Chest. The entire place was made up for both Winston's and a normal human's scale, the need for which becoming obvious as Angela started to put on some tea and Winston continued to introduce them to the intestines of the magical locomotive luggage.
"Chest creates rooms as me need dem, yuh see. Me don't know 'ow, bot wen me need a new space, et jost appears. Dem es VERY clever." He said, making his way over to a sack of Rainbow coloured rice. "'ay, Tristan! Dis es me Rainbow rice." He smiled, offering him a little scoop of the uncooked food stuff to inspect. The cup of rice was striped and as a small amount was removed, it change colour from whatever it had been, to again include all the colours of the rainbow in itself. "Me used Scalvaris Rainbow Sand tuh make et wid a littal Alchemy... ef yuh eat some, et will turn yuh rainbow coloured fram 'ead tuh toe." He smiled and paused to let that sink in. "Alchemical fud... Jost like a poshun, but chewy." He said, as if reeling of a tagline to a new product. He remembered the last time they spoke, he had only just begun to consider the idea of potions, but it had been Tristan that had put him on to it.
"Me wud be very 'appy tuh share de recipie wid yuh..." He said, making to rummage around in a draw. "Me 'ave been workin' an an explosive vershun, but et's a lital valitile at de moment. De first time me made de rice, et blew up an' turn me an' me 'ole farge all de colours af de rainbow."
He turned back to the Alchemist, offering a roll of paper
full of recipes.
"Wat 'ave yuh been workin' an recently?" He asked, with very genuine curiosity.
Re: [Saiore's Dream] Meeting the family
Image
Ayla giggled when Kelpie began to look for her wings. At that point, the little Mortalborn was thoroughly relaxed and enjoyed herself tremendously. “I don’t have flutteries”, she told the fairy and smiled all over her face. “But maybe I’ll get some when I’m older”, she added confidently, but she didn’t say more. By now, Ayla knew better than to reveal to people that she was Mortalborn and might get special abilities when she was older and that her mother was Syroa. Tristan had told her that her mother had loved her a great deal, but that some people didn’t like her very much because she had done some things that hadn’t been very nice. Ayla understood that. Why were they still mad at her mother even though she was dead though? Being mad at dead people wasn’t right in her opinion!
Tristan wasn’t worried at all when Winston asked him if it would be okay to let Ayla become a fairy for a bit, even though it sounded like a big thing. In his opinion, it was a pretty nice offer, considering that his daughter wanted to learn to fly. I’d be okay with it, provided that it is safe and that you’ll turn her back”, he said and grinned before he turned to look at Ayla who looked back at him. “Ultimately, the choice is up to Ayla though. Ayla, do you want to become a fairy?” he asked his daughter who immediately began to nod eagerly.
In spite of that, she looked a bit skeptical when Winston offered her a bell. She’d thought that he would perform some sort of magic on her, or make her drink a potion. Her skepticism made way to utter delight when she suddenly found herself transformed into a fairy though!
Ayla the fairy still had blue eyes and black hair, but she also had bright blue and silver wings, and her skin sparkled, as if it were bathed in moonlight, and she laughed more than she had ever laughed in her entire life as she played with the other fairies. She wasn’t a very good flier – she had never had wings before – but she was having a lot of fun.
When the fairies asked for the hair, Tristan quickly produced a brightly colored cloth bag and removed a whole bunch of hair (and moukou beans, should the fairies want to try some) from it. He’d combed Ayla’s dog Fluffy before they’d left. As he presented the hair to the fairies, he briefly wondered if selling four-eyed-dog-hair would be a worthwhile business idea before he admired the fairies. They were very close to him now, but he didn’t mind. On the contrary, he smiled at them and proclaimed,
“You look fantastic!”
“How do I look though?”
he wanted to know a moment later, stuck a few strands of Fluffy’s hair into his hair and put his hands on his hips. Together with his skin that was still blue, the effect was … interesting to say the least.
While Tristan remained doubtful, Ayla readily accepted Winston’s statement that having a person inside of it wouldn’t hurt Chest. And what more, she nearly bounced when she stepped inside. Her blue eyes were incredibly wide as she looked around (she had finally turned back into a little girl).
“How come Chest is bigger on the inside than on the outside?” she wanted to know.
“More magic?” Tristan who was just as fascinated asked and looked at Winston for confirmation.
“Can I learn it?” Ayla eagerly wanted to know.
“What kind of tea are you making?” Tristan asked Angela and watched her with interest.
“What does it taste like?” he asked Winston as the cadouri showed him the rainbow rice. He was quite fascinated. “Have you tried to combine rice with other kinds of Scalvoris sand?” he then wanted to know. “Rice that glows in the dark would be interesting for example”, he said. “You wouldn’t need a lamp anymore if you eat something in the evening!”
“Thank you very much”,
Tristan said when Winston offered him his recipes. “I’ve mostly been working on healing potions recently. Leander, my student and friend, and I are working on an alchemical recipe book”, he explained before his eyes lit up as he had just had an idea. “Say, Winston, would you like to contribute to our recipe book as well?” he asked.
In the meantime, Ayla had just had another interesting thought. “Mister Winston”, she asked and tugged at his arm in order to get his attention. A moment later, she realized that interrupting him like that might be a bit rude, so she quickly curtsied before she continued,
“Mister Winston, can Chest still hear us when we are inside of it?”
Learning to fly!
Image
It had to be said, the Fairies were not terrible talented at teaching... or at the very least, however a fairy usually learnt to fly was perhaps not entirely compatible with the sensibilities of your average mortal, even if only half that way. None the less, what they were, was terribly good fun, childish and playful. These at the very least always leant themselves very well when dealing with children and Kelpie and a few others, played chase and dressed her in the most whimsical of flowery outfits... "There, a blue on here. A dingly one there. OH! You look splendiferous! Now you simply MUST be able to fly. No one dressed like THAT could fail to fly." And indeed, with the fact she weighed little to nothing at all, flying was not a great challenge, though doing so in the right direction, perhaps might be.
Ayla was encourage to play chase and even the occasional prank on her father, in the form of something called 'tinkle-poof'. Which involved tugging the ear of a biggun and then darting for cover or trying to remain unseen by hovering behind their head. If challenged on it, Kelpie would explain with great authority... "Oh yes! These are the very most first things we learn when we start to fly! There's no better way to learn to fly than to be having fun!"
Winston grinned, obviously seeing some wisdom in that statement. He thought nothing at all of the girl's comment regarding grown wings. Naturally he didn't expect to grow wing when he was older, but did... on a regular basis.
As the moukou beans were offered, the ferret sidled over and obviously showed an interest. "Actually. Me might 'ave someting me cud use dat far. Might me 'ave one?" He said and fluttered his eye-lids with a cheeky grin, quite confident the answer would be yes.
When Tristan struck a pose, with dog hair sticking out of his head, the fairies and Winston alike all guffawed. "Now DAT es 'air af de dawg dat me cun get down wid!"
The fairies adored it and danced around him, tinkaling and singling little songs.
"A blue, tall, hairy man! Who can do it?! TRISTAN CAN!" There was a little puff of glitter with the crescendo as they swirled around his head as stars might circle a cartoon character's head after a fall.
Later, inside Chest, Ayla was full of questions. Winston LOVED questions, particularly excited ones and engaged in expressing the depth and breadth of his ignorance with glee. "Oh yus. Almost certainly magic, but I have absolutely NO idea wat-so-eva how. Yuh wud need tuh ask Saiore 'erself far dat ansa! Me just surprised every time dem create a new area en me Alchemical Farge." He announced, as if that was the most wonderful thing ever. "
Horatio Thunderbustle
introduced me to dem an' Sairoe let Chest com wid me tuh live."
Winston still refused to admit that Chest was owned, or even ownable, whether that was true or not. They were a friend to him as clearly as any two legged person he knew."Wat me tink es dat dis es not REEEEAAALLY inside Chest. Bot actually, maybe we are in some odda small place between places." He grinned. The concept was not something he'd thought of, this was simply how he understood domain bag to worked and guessed this had to be something similar.
Angela blushed when asked about the tea. "Oh it's some of Winston's rubrum berry tea." She started to whisper. "He likes to see what people think... Put some sugar in it." She winked.
If he tried it, he would find that tea to be very tart on the pallet, which the ample application of sugar might solve, for now.
When asked about the rice, he beamed. "Ah well. Me flavour et with de wata me add. So ef yuh want, et tates jost like narmal rice! Bot noh, me nate tried et wid odda sand yet." His attention began to drift for a moment. "Me bet cappa sand wud tate well gud mun. OH! Here! Try some." He proclaimed with a grin and spun around to grab a bowl and some cutlery.
Smokie
suddenly appeared to help the tiny ferret with the blows that were too large for him to carry himself.
Then as they continued to talk, he started to serve up some of the cooked rainbow rice. If Tristran tried some he would find it to be flavoured of fruit juice rather than water. "Ooooooo..... Glow en de dark rainbow meals at midnight onda de stars? Wow! Tell yuh wat. Me gonna do dat one far shar." It would be safe to say that the rice tasted spectacular and was cooked to perfection. It changed colour with each spoonful taken from it and there was ample to go around. He was expecting visitors and no effort had been spared on this preparation.
They would find the Fairies had followed them and ate
singular grans of the cooked rice like their were food-bars
. They perched on the many little purpose-built alcoves all around the walls and ceilings.
When he spoke of a healing potion, Winston nearly choked on his tea. "REAALLY?! Wow! Me TOO! Actually, dat's wat me wanted de bean far.
Me 'ave dees 'ealin' chews yuh see
."
He rummaged around on his belt for a moment and then popped a small round sweet
from his dispenser
and offered it to Tristan with a word of caution. "Et's me only one, so don't eat et... also, it's extremely painful and taking mare den one has... Ummm... Well, don't. Et might kill yuh." He smiled apologetically. "Me 'ave been lookin' far a way tuh reduce dese affects, de pain and, well, death, an' maby puttin' de persan tuh sleep while dem 'eal might alleviate de stress?" His expression seemed to suggest that he hoped the master Alchemist might have some insight into it. "Me es certain we cus make peepal's lims regrow ef only we cun work out 'ow tuh stap de affects af de Emperor bats hunga fram killin' dem in de process."
If Tristan asked for the recipe, Winston would gladly share it, apparently oblivious to the wealth a person could earn from hoarding such a secret.
"Me? Contribute to yuh book?" He almost popped. "Wud I eva!" He chuckled before suddenly thinking of something and becoming a little cautious, still in a friendly way. "Only ting es dat all me recipes are far anyone tuh see, yuh see. Me don't keep dem secret ar sell dem. Me don't know ef yuh plan tuh sell dis book, bot ef yuh don't plan tuh restrict the recipes put intuh de book, dat wud be grand, bot me wud need tuh be able tuh cantinue to share dem wid de world also." He smiled apologetically and hoped that a follower of Saiore might be forgiven for insisting on an openness to knowledge. His concern was entirely driven by a desire not to insult Tristan, and not that he thought the man might be some money grabbing maniac.
As his sleeve was tugged by a person still easily 4 times his height, he giggled as she curtsied, clearly enamoured by the interaction. "Oh yeh. Dem cun." Winston leaned in and cupped his hand over the side of his mouth conspiratorially. "Dem don't like bein' called 'it' dough." He winked. "Me shar dem won't 'old et against someone so lovely dough." He gesture to the room at large. "Dem is aware af evertin' dat goes an en 'ere. Bot tuh de best af me knowledge, dem don't 'feel' any af wat we do... Well. When me insult dem, me certainly know about et. Me wus lacked out far three trials once... OH! An dis one time, wen me bough some storage crates tuh keep stuff en... Oh mun. Me cud nat find any af me stuff far many trials when me did dat." He laughed fondly at his own mishaps. "Me es very canfident dat ef anytin' we did in 'ere made Chest unfomfatable, dem wud let me know."
Re: [Saiore's Dream] Meeting the family
“Of course“, Tristan replied when Winston showed interest in his moukou beans and beamed at him. He immediately pulled out a small cloth bag and handed a bean to him, but not without a word of warning. Two beans are usually enough to make an adult fall asleep, so be careful. Cooked, moukou beans make a wonderful cake frosting though”, he added before he told Winston, Angela (and the fairies and Chest!) the story of how he had rescued a moukou tree. It was a wonderful little story and seemed quite fitting for the occasion.
“My former fiancée Ashling and I decided to participate in a potions tournament back in Melrath”, he told them in a cheerful tone of voice. “I decided that my potion required moukou beans. They can normally be found in Desnind, but we decided to look for them in the wilderness surrounding Fensalir regardless. We actually found a tree, but it was very small and kind of sickly looking. So, I decided to rescue it and take it home with me. The tree and I have become very good friends”, he added.
Some people likely doubted that trees and people could be friends; to Tristan such a friendship made perfect sense though, and he hoped that his new acquaintances would agree!
Later, inside Chest, Ayla listened to Winston with wide-eyed fascination. When he confirmed that Chest being bigger on the inside than on the outside was probably due to magic, she abruptly turned to look at Tristan and pleaded, “Can we go and talk to Saoire about her magic? Please, daddy?”
Tristan wasn’t keen on the kind of magic that mutated you because it, well, mutated you, but he had no issues whatsoever with Immortal magic, so he grinned and said, “We can ask her if she’d allow us to visit!”
Since she had become a fairy and been allowed to fly with the real fairies, Ayla had become practically talkative. When Winston said that inside Chest might actually not really be inside of Chest, but a place between places, she nodded as if she knew exactly what he meant.
“Daddy and I went to a place that’s not really here once”, she said.
Tristan furrowed his brow when he heard that and wondered what Ayla could have meant.
“We went to Vri’s domain once”, he finally said. “I officiated his wedding”, he added in a serious tone of voice and showed Winston his black nails that were not a fashion choice, but the blessing of Bellinos. Having said that, he waited for the questions that would probably come. How many people could claim to have officiated an Immortal’s wedding, after all? He had to admit, he was proud of that!
“The tea’s good”, he told Angela and Winston and really meant it. It was a bit tart, but the addition of sugar mitigated it. And besides, it was better than any tea he could have made!
“Huh”, Tristan made when he gave the rainbow rice a taste. “I’ve never had rice that tastes of fruit juice before! I like it! Say, Winston, what do you think of mixing it with whipped cream and some actual fruit? It would make a fantastic dessert!” he said.
Tristan was no cook, but he was very good at eating things and familiar with all kinds of food. Back in Rynmere, he had dined with the richest and most famous people in the kingdom and been exposed to dishes that the common citizens had probably never even heard of!
A few moments later, Tristan carefully examined the healing chew as he listened to Winston’s explanation of the side effects. He wasn’t particularly worried about them – because he already had a solution. He did in fact several solutions, and one of them was right there!
“Did I tell you that Moukou beans can make you fall asleep?” he asked. They also act as an analgesic. That means that they relieve pain”, he explained, in case Winston and the others didn’t know the term. “You could just add moukou beans to your chews!”
“Would you be willing to show me the exact recipe?”
Tristan then wanted to know. “If I knew the exact ingredients, I might be able to come up with more ways to mitigate the side effects!”
When it came to his offer to let Winston contribute to the recipe book, he listened to the cadouri’s concerns with a serious expression on his face before he slowly replied, “Leander and I collect recipes that already exist, so I have no problem with you sharing the recipes you give us for our book. In my opinion, knowledge shouldn’t be restricted!”
“I’ll have to talk to Leander about you helping us, of course”,
he continued. “But I don’t think he’ll mind. On the contrary, he’ll probably be excited! As am I!” he added and finally smiled all over his face. Working together with Winston would be so much fun!
“Them?” Ayla asked, looking confused, when Winston explained that Chest didn’t like being called an “it”, but was actually a “them”. “Is Chest more than one person?” she wondered. She had never heard of “singular they” before. Whatever Winston’s answer was, she accepted it before she looked up where she hoped Chest’s “ears” were and said in a sincere tone of voice,
“I’m sorry for calling you an ‘it’, Chest! You are not an ‘it’! You are the best! And I really hope hearing all those different voices inside of you doesn’t give you a headache! If it does, I’ll be quiet from now on”, she promised.
Tristan’s eyes widened a little when Winston told him how Chest had reacted to being insulted, for example, and then he laughed.
Just like his daughter, he also addressed Chest themselves, “I hope Ayla and I will never make you uncomfortable, Chest! But if we do, I hope you’ll always let us know!”
Re: [Saiore's Dream] Meeting the family
Image
Looking blue and feeling fine
The fury critter was already well invested in the possibilities of the bean when Tristan informed him that it could be made into a frosting. This news made his mouth spread wide and his eyebrows make for such a dash for the ceiling that one would be forgiven for wondering if his eyes had offended them. "Frastin'? Wow! Me gonna see ef Chep cun grow me one af dees plants me tink." Anything that could be made into food was a popular thing in this ferrets world.
Image
Winston and the Fairies alike were apparently enraptured by the story of the Tree and his acquisition of it, the dancing and singing came to a lull as he retold it and rose back up again as it finished. Tristan would find himself being rewarded with a wide variety of flowers and petals, which if he permitted it, Fairies would weave into his hair as continued to enjoy the trial.
If anyone present disagreed with ones friendship with a plant, it was not made apparent as if anything, the fondness for another (plant-based or otherwise) seamed only to endeer them all to him more.
"Oh plants make the most fantastic fo friends!" Kelpie proclaimed with glee. "They make for such good listeners. My friend Mr Barnabie listens to ALL my stories. Event the boring one about how Winston sleeps." Winston cocked an inquisitive eyebrow. "Not so good a chase though..." She concluded, as if having already given it considerable thought.
That they might visit Saiore pleased him no end. They both seemed like lovely and interesting people and these were the perfect kind of people to share.
When Tristan casually let out that he's officiated Vri's wedding, Winston nearly choked. "Yuh say wat naw?! Kelpie, wud yuh be gettin' me some af dat Larger stuff, dis cud be a gud one. Smokie, cake, stat!" He turned back to his friend, now a perch for several braiding Fairies and very much the center of attention after this proclamation. "Yuh GAT tuh tell me about dat den. Wen wus dis? 'ow did yuh get involved in dat den?" He listenned with great and very genuine intrigue to any of the details he was offered. "Mun a alive. Runnin' de weddin' af de Immartal af Love 'imself... " He paused for a moment. "Yuh most be en 'igh demand far weddin's afta dat den? Mun, if eva me get married, me 'ope yuh wud do me de 'ana." He said with a light-hearted chuckled.
"My 'ave met Saiore an Cassion. Both fantastically interestin' peepal, bot me don't see me eva being don' anytin' like dat." He made to tip his glass in salute of his friends achievement. "Keep tellin' staries like dis, an' de Fairies will be announcing yuh next visit wid fanfair."
He considered the suggestion of a sweet, rice pudding and nodded after a moment's thought. "Yuh know, dat almost certainly cud be de most delicious ting eva." He agreed, with a nod.
When Tristan spoke of the bean again, Winston nodded. "Yuh, mun. Yuh did..." His open statement left a prompt to be filled. "Relieves pain?" When his fellow alchemist asked for the details of the recipe, the ferret almost fell over himself to oblige as he waved for him to follow him into the actual forge.
Winston giggled at the 'they/them' remarks and gave a friendly shrug. "Yuh know wat? Me TINK dere es only one 'Chest'. Dem af nat yet disclosed tuh me ef dem es an 'im ar an 'er, so me go wid 'dem' an' dis seems fine. Me KNOW dem prefar tuh be treated like a persan doh. Ef Chest es opset wid yuh, dem let's yuh know." He gestured toward the door to the rest of Chest in general. "Yuh welcom tuh 'ave a look around while me an' yuh dad talk shap? Deh es a sea-wata swimming pool down stairs... Angela cun tell yuh 'ow dat 'appenned." Angela rolled her eyes. ["Oh my. You may have even read about it already..."/say] She began as the two of them (Winston and Tristan) made their way out.
If the kitchen was a haven for culinary creation, the forge was a haven for most other kinds. It was large enough to smelt and work full human sized materials and it was surrounded by a series of
odd-looking plates
. He summoned, quite literally as it flew into his hand from a desk draw, a scroll and handed it to the man. "Naw, we are gonna 'ave tuh work an some... Uhhh... 'translashun', me tink. Cus me alchemy wus taught tuh me by Chep an' so et's Tunuwan alchemy." He gestured to the glyphs etched into the many concentric and interlocking circles around the forge. "As me unda stand biggun alchemy, et's a bit diffarent, bot de princicals are de same..."
Without further ado, as Angela and Arla continued to occupy themselves with Chest and the Fairies, the ferret went about explaining what went into the chew recipes. Unless his companion showed signed of loosing interest, Winston would explain the properties he;d taken from the Emperor Bat and show great interest in how Tristan's alchemical process differed from his own while still achieving the same result.
There were no secrets or hidden agendas. Winston would openly do his best to share the recipe as fully as he could with his companion and between them, even refine it into something that could bring great good to the world, without quite so much pain. "Ef we cun reduce the pain, an' even use de sleep tuh allow dem tuh rest during the regrowth, dat wud be amazin'.
He nodded at the statement about talking with Leander. "Af cars, yus. Yuh jost let me know." He was so very obviously delighted at Tristan's opinion of knowledge he beamed as they spoke. "Me es very shar Saiore wud like yuh very moch."
Re: [Saiore's Dream] Meeting the family
Image
Tristan had expected some sort of reaction to his revelation that he had officiated Vri’s wedding, but he had not expected Winston to nearly choke. When the cadouri did just that, the young man immediately moved over to him and hit him on the back, between the shoulder blades, hoping that would dislodge whatever his new friend was choking on.
He thought Winston was really choking!
When it turned out that Winston was fine, he blushed, quickly apologized, to both Winston and the braiding fairies and relaxed again. “Sorry”, he said. “Healer’s habit. Anyway, I’m not entirely sure how I got involved in Vri’s wedding”, he continued, speaking in a kind of solemn tone of voice, as was appropriate when you were telling a story about an Immortal’s wedding. “Or rather, I don’t know why Vri picked me out of all of his marked. I was asked if I would be willing to officiate the wedding in a dream though, almost exactly two arcs ago. Of course, I agreed. I was honored beyond measure.”
“The wedding took place in Vri’s domain, and I was allowed to bring a guest. I decided to bring Ayla”,
he said and cast a loving glance at his daughter who smiled brightly and nodded. Ayla had really enjoyed the wedding. Her Uncle Vri had been very nice!
“There were other guests as well, of course”, he continued, after he had given his audience some time to think about what they had just heard. “Faith Augustin was there, for example. Balthazar Black and his wife were there as well, although I’m not sure if Balthazar and Elisabeth were already married back then. Even my half-brother attended the wedding.”
“Granny was also there!”
Ayla interrupted him. “Vri teleported her to Bellinos from Rynmere! Vri saved here because there are bad things happening in Rynmere! I think there was even a dragon there!”
“I don’t know if what the Immortals do is teleportation”,
Tristan said. “But Vri reunited me with my grandmother when I inquired after her fate and admitted that I missed her. The wedding was wonderful, and Vri’s bride Anaza was beautiful”, he admitted. He was about to say what had happened next when Ayla interrupted him again.
Normally, the little Mortalborn knew better than to interrupted other people, but she was just so excited; any anyway, Tristan didn’t mind. He loved telling a story with his daughter!
“Daddy held a speech!” Ayla proudly informed everybody.
“That I did”, Tristan confirmed and smirked. “I talked about love”, he added.
When Winston made to tip his glass in salute to his achievements, Tristan inclined his head before he replied, grinning, “I wouldn’t mind telling my stories to the other fairies and the rest of the creatures of Sweetwine if they find them interesting. In fact, I would love to. Just keep in mind that I’m not a masterful storyteller. I’m still learning”, he admitted, because there was no shame in admitting that you weren’t perfect at everything.
“Would you like to hear more stories sometime?” he then addressed the fairies directly.
“Moukou beans do indeed relieve pain”, he confirmed when the conversation turned to Winston’s chews.
Ayla listened, her blue eyes wide, when Winston talked about Chest and the ‘they/them’ issue and finally nodded. She still didn’t understand why you called someone whose gender you didn’t know ‘they’ rather than something else, but all in all, Winston’s explanation made sense. She wouldn’t want people to call her a boy when she was a girl either!
While Ayla looked quite excited at the mention of a swimming pool inside Chest, Tristan looked a little concerned. “Ayla can’t swim very well”, he told Angela in a serious and slightly stern tone of voice. “So, if the pool is too deep for her to be able to stand, she’s not allowed to go in. I also want you to watch her at all times, Angela. Have fun”, he added in a gentler tone of voice so that the girls would know that he wasn’t a spoilsport. He just cared about his daughter.
“I had no idea that Chest’s inside was so big! It’s quite impressive!” Tristan exclaimed as he took a look around the forge before he abruptly turned to face Winston again.
“What’s Tunawa alchemy?” he wanted to know. “I know that different alchemists approach alchemy differently, but I had no idea that there’s something like actual Tunawa alchemy! How does it work? Do Tunawa work with different reagents and smaller tools?”
From the tone of Tristan’s voice, it was obvious that the (former) duke was quite fascinated, and he was impressed with his new friend – no, with his friends. Chest, the fairies and Angela were great as well!
Tristan never lost interest when Winston explained his process. In fact, looked at the cadouri the entire time. It turned out that Tristan was less likely to use crazy reagents, but his approach wasn’t exactly like the highly scientific one they might teach at university, nevertheless. His alchemy was a little whimsical, and he treated it almost like an art from – an art from that could occasionally cause explosions, make you sick or smell bad.
“I’m pretty sure we can use the moukou beans for that”, Tristan said as Winston shared his recipe (He really appreciated it!) and talked about refining it. “Of course, we need to figure out the correct dose to get exactly the effect we want and avoid unwanted effects. By the way, have you thought about using a metabolizer to strengthen the alchemical effect? Perhaps, there’s also a reagent that can be used to weaken the side effects of the other components”, he then mused.
If there were substances that could strengthen an effect, it made sense that the opposite also existed!
“Thank you”, he said when Winston told him he was very sure Saoire would like him very much. If that wasn’t a compliment, then he didn’t know what was. He beamed at the clever cadouri.
