A Hazy Shade of Winter
It was snowing.
No. No that wasn't right. "It's beltin' down," Vega said and she looked up at her father.
He smiled at her and nodded. "This is not good, certainly," he said and Vega lifted her gaze to meet his. Her father was one of the few people in the world who was taller than her and she met his gaze with love in her eyes and heart. "No, Papa. A'right. This smells like it's a big one, an' I'm not takin' no risks." The camp at Sweetsong was already more protected than most Bamboo: Camp inhabitants are protected from the weather, and camp can be set up in half the time. Sweetsong Effect from the Capstone "Bamboo" here
"Vega has lived in the wilderness, or on the oceans, all her life. During that time she's seen a lot of extreme weather conditions. She has learned the art of building a camp which withstands the elements. Like the bamboo bends in the wind, rather than snaps, Vega has learned to set up a camp - large or small - which protects against the elements. Wind, rain, sleet, snow - they are all protected against. By putting a windbreak in just the right place, by having hot stones or warm sand around, things don't get broken, spoiled, etc. The upshot of this is that, subject to her having the resources she needs, Vega can make a comfortable and functioning camp in even the most extreme of weather - the inhabitants will suffer no ill effects from the weather in all its forms. They may not be warm in snow - but they won't be cold, won't be wet, will not stay awake hearing the wind howl, etc. One camp protects against all potential elements / weather conditions.
If the camp is of the usual size (eg: Vega, Arlo + NPCs) - then it takes half the time it usually would to set the camp up." but Vega wasn't prepared to take any risks. When a cold storm had hit Hopetoun, while Darius wasn't there, she'd gotten the people organised then and she had much more of an idea of what to do now. "I'm goin' to get a camp up. But first, I reckon I'm goin' to set up Safesong Sails for the children.", she said and her father nodded.
Thinking about it, Vega knew that she had to consider every person in Sweetsong and think about their vulnerabilities It was then that she realised that "Jasper's wife, Astra, she's pregnant. I don't wanna take any chances with her," Vega said. Looking at the children as they slept, she considered things just for a moment, and then she began to move. "Papa, stay here with the children. Get the others up an' movin'. Get Shon an' Reese makin' the boats safe. I can keep people warmer here than out on the boats, so I jus' want them moored an' anchored an' all that. Tell them to get the orange sand bags that we use below decks, I want them all here." Jo'qan nodded his head "Also, any an' all resources that could be useful. Blankets, wood, ropes, all of it. Bring it to shore. I'll ask the admin tent to help them." she said, firmly, and then Vega turned and, pulling on her coat, started to move.
"Wherever you are, Creede," she muttered grumpily as she stepped out into what was a beautiful scene. "You'd better be well an' healthy." But she had no time to do more than that, at the moment, so she walked.
The camp was mostly silent - except for the light in the administration tent, of course. That always burned, because there was always someone there. She first of all stepped towards there and then, entering the tent she saw that it was
Gilna
. That was good, Vega thought - Gilna was a sensible sort and she liked him. He also had good skills. "Gilna, I'm not likin' this weather," Vega said and he nodded in agreement. "Is everyone in camp, or is anyone out?" They had a system where people signed in and out for just this sort of reason and Vega was grateful for it in this moment. "All in," Gilna said. "Sam and Sally were out, but they came back early when the snow started to fall." That was good. "Is there anything I can do?" Vega thought about it for a moment and then nodded. "Put a note up here, lettin' folks know where you are. But I'm goin' to build us a central camp around the tree. My cousins are gettin' all the supplies we have on the two ships over there, an' if you could do the same, help them where you can, that would be great. Once that's done, I should be there but if not, get over there, an' grab a couple of strong backs on the way an' start clearin',."
Gilna looked at her and nodded. "What are you doing?" He asked it not in a challenging way, but with an expression of curiosity. "Asta's pregnant," Vega said. "I'm goin' to get her an' their family over to my tents, so they're warm an' safe while we're makin' the main camp." Gilna nodded.
Vega then made her way to Jasper's family tent. "Heya," she called as she got to their camp. "Anyone awake? It's snowin' up a storm an' we're goin' to make a central community shelter. Until that happens, though, I thought you might be more comfortable in my tent, it's warm an' everythin'. Also, my kids are sleepin' there, so I'd appreciate some grown-up eyes on 'em.". Then, she waited to see who - if anyone - answered.
