Craft of Dreams: Devin

Event: Craft of Dreams

There was something strange in the air. Like a hum, or a buzz, or the static charge of some unseen storm brewing on the horizon. It seemed to follow Devin no matter where he went, and it might have been his imagination, but it seemed to grow stronger, heavier... until, as though a great hand had dropped him from the sky into the middle of a muddling crowd, a very strange-looking man appeared.

His top-hat hung at a jaunty angle on his shaved head, an unlit pipe was gripped between his teeth, and underneath a flapping coat of long tails and elaborate spiral patterns could be seen an assortment of belts and loops of leather criss-crossed over his chest, containing metal and wooden instruments that one could only dream the uses for. He certainly seemed to know his way around them however, for he tapped at a strange circular disc at his hip and a thick metal cord sliced the air above him and disappeared inside. Then, as if nothing out of the ordinary had just happened, he started walking - straight for Devin.

"Hey-ho!" he offered in greeting with a warm smile. "Allow me to introduce myself. Teq Vy'lhadi. Champion of Aeva, and in quite a spot of bother, but then, I've heard you are as well, and no pretty one either. Little bird's told me you've got some trouble handling the tunnels under the Smooglenuff Barony on Faldrass, and I can hardly blame you. Luckily, I think I've got just the trick for that - if you're willing to help me out a little myself with a slight rationing issue."

Pointing straight up in the air somewhat cryptically, he explained, "My work requires me to move around all over, and long travel times often leaves me relying on travel rations. Only thing is, most of those things taste ghastly, you know, all hard and salty! Do you think you could make some travel rations that contain all the necessities of hearty meals and delicious taste, while still keeping their freshness over the many trials of my travels? If so, I'd be delighted to help with your tunnelling problem." He offered his hand to shake on the rather peculiar arrangement, but if Devin did, he'd find quite a firm grip and an even wider smile, as if his face could even fit any more cheer on its surface.

Then, Teq released his grip, and in Devin's hand was a little sealed packet of some strange powder, like one might find in a snowglobe. It floated in the packet even when utterly still. "Tear that open and release what's inside when you've found the solution, and I'll know when and where to find you."

After Rations.

Saun 8, Arc 722

Teq Vy’lhadi, Champion of Aeva, had offered to help Devin with the tunnels under the Barony in exchange for travel rations that contained all the necessities of hearty meals and delicious taste. Said travel rations were finally ready. Devin had decided not to make weird bars with cereals and nuts and dried fruit in them, or hard tack, or food with a lot of salt in it. No, he had cooked a normal, delicious meal instead, dehydrated it and preserved it in mason jars. That was much better than one of those standard travel rations in his opinion. In his opinion, his travel rations would become the standard!

Several mason jars filled with dehydrated zucchini noodles with shrimps, sea salt and delicious spices were lined up on a table in the garden of Smooglenuff Manor. On each jar, there was a label that said, “Remove oxygen absorber from jar. Add water and wait for food to rehydrate. Enjoy food. Do not eat oxygen absorber!”, combined with a very (very, very) crude drawing of a goat, because goats were Devin’s favourite animals, apart from birds.

Devin had considered it necessary to add the warning about oxygen absorbers because the jars contained those in order to make the food last even longer. Oxygen absorbers were poisonous, and people were stupid. He didn’t want anybody to get poisoned by his rations though, not even stupid people, because stupid people that got poisoned were bad for business.

With that thought in mind, the young man that was dressed fashionably, as always (He was wearing a neon pink suit this time because pink was all the rage that season.) tore the packet Teq had given him open, released the contents and waited for the Champion of Aeva to arrive and take a look at his rations that tasted as fresh as they had when they had been made if you just added a bit of water. He had no doubt that he would love them!

Event: Craft of Dreams

When Devin ripped open the packet, he was surrounded by tiny pin-pricks of light, multi-coloured firefly-like lights, each of which only lasted a few seconds and then puffed out of existence. It was very pretty and made for a dazzling show.

And there, once more, was Teq Vy'lhadi. Walking towards him in the garden of Smooglenuff Manor, the Champion of Aeva looked much the same as he had before. "Hey-ho!" Teq called, in greeting, and he moved to stand where Devin was, and looked at what was on the table. "This looks fantastic! Oh, look at these!" Teq bounced slightly on the balls of his feet, obviously delighted at the sight. "May I try one? Let's try one!"

It was obvious that Teq was very pleased with this, and very enthusiastic about giving them a go and so he picked one and put it down in front of himself, then he started patting his coat pockets, his many bags and so on. Devin saw him pull out two strange quarter-circles of wood which he then opened up and opened up again, twisted and with a click, they were plates. Forks, wrapped in napkins, appeared out of a pocket, and they were the kind of forks that were fork-knife-spoons.

"Water... oh, would you mind?"

Teq spoke to apparently thin air and, after he'd taken out the Oxygen Remover, some water appeared, as though an invisible creature was pouring it. Teq watched the whole process with fascination. "How did you do that? What's the oxygen absorber made from? I wonder if there's the potential for edible oxygen absorbers - maybe dessert flavoured, or something. Oh, look at that, you can see it working, isn't it fascinating?"

He seemed to very much enjoy the spectacle of getting it all set up and then, when he took a taste (urging Devin to do the same), he closed his eyes and concentrated on the taste of it. Savouring the flavour, he was quiet as he ate and then, he opened one eye, looked at Devin and suddenly grinned. Both eyes opened and he looked delightedly at the Baron. "That, my friend, is perfect! Thank you so much!"

Teq finished the meal, obviously enjoying it, and then he started collecting up the mason jars. Just when it might seem that he had forgotten, he once again started patting his clothes, obviously looking for something. "Oh, about your tunnels," he said, pat-pat-pat, "I was thinking that the thing I try to do is to always turn a problem into a positive, so I've put these together for you.. now where are they?.... hmm... AHA!" And with that Teq pulled out some schematics.

"Here! Now, these are plans for those tunnels, I think I've got them all. I thought you could turn them into cold food storage and have a wine gallery! I know you're working with wine, currently. You could even do tours and, if you follow these plans, those tunnels will be safe as safe can be!" He gestured to the place where there had been invisible water pouring. "And since you went so far above and beyond, my friend here will stay and help you!" As he said that, Devin saw - for the first time - the Diri in question.

So saying, he handed over the schematics (and maps) to Devin, with a broad smile. "I hope you're happy with that?" The grin on Teq's face was one of obvious delight. "And I look forward to visiting your wine gallery!"

Re: Craft of Dreams: Devin

“Hey, Teq!“ Devin greeted the Champion of Aeva in much the same enthusiastic tone of voice and raised a hand in a greeting before he told him, “Feel free to try one. You can also eat all of them if you want to though. We can always make more. I can also make different foods using the same process”, he offered and smiled brightly before his eyes widened. He watched with fascination as Teq pulled out two strange quarter-circles of wood that he opened and twisted and so on until they suddenly turned into plates. He had never seen foldable plates before and thought they were great!

He was about to ask Teq where he had gotten them from, or if he had made them himself, when the Champion of Aeva asked for water. He was about to get some when a bit of water suddenly appeared, as if an invisible creature were pouring it. This time, Devin couldn’t hold back. Eyes wide, the young Baron asked, “How did you do that? Is that part of Aeva’s Blessing, or a Mortalborn ability? Are you a Mortalborn, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m a Mortalborn of Zanik myself”, he added, hoping that his honesty in that regard would make Teq more inclined to tell him more about himself.

“If Aeva’s Blessing enables you to do such cool things, I’d really like to get it sometime”, he continued to chat quite happily because he was just in such an extraordinary good mood.

He didn’t ignore Teq or his questions due to his own excitement though though. On the contrary, when the Champion of Aeva wanted to know how he had done it and wanted to know what the oxygen absorber was made from, he immediately replied, “I’m not sure what exactly you mean with ‘How did you do that?’, but I cooked the food the usual way, and then I separated it into its individual components, put it on a baking tray and shoved it into an oven. And when it was dry, I stuck it into mason jars and kind of canned it, like jam”, he finished and smiled all over his face because he was so proud of his invention.

“As for the oxygen absorber”, he then said. “The packet contains steel wool and things like that. I could certainly give edible oxygen absorbers a try”, he continued because his ambition had been awakened, and he was looking forward to making something nobody had ever made before. He was sure that he’d be successful, too. He always was!

“And oh – it really looks awesome!” he agreed as he watched the contents of the jar slowly turn into normal, edible and delicious smelling food.

Before long, he grabbed a fork and ate as well. It tasted really good, but then again, his food always tasted good!

When Teq thanked him, he grinned at him and bowed in a very dramatic fashion before he told him, “You’re welcome!”

Devin had enjoyed the conversation with Teq so much that he had almost forgotten about his tunnel problem. When he mentioned it and started to put his clothes, the young Baron cocked his head a little to the side and looked at him with curiosity because he had no idea what he was doing. Did he have a secret tunnel fixing device in his pockets?

“Wow. Thank you so much”, he said as he looked at the plans before he eyed the Diri with fascination. He had been really worried that the tunnels under the Barony would collapse, or that monsters would jump out of them all of a sudden, so this was great. “I’d love for you to visit again when the tunnels are ready. I’m not just making any kind of wine. My goal is to make glowing wine with honey it – honey from kittenbees and not those normal bees that nearly everyone has in their garden”, he added so that Teq would be even more excited.

It seemed as if Teq was about to take his leave, but there was another thing that Devin really wanted to know, besides whether Teq was a Mortalborn and could make water appear because of his Blessing, “Where did you get that awesome coat? I’d love to buy one of my own!”

Event: Craft of Dreams

"Different foods, you say?" Teq asked Devin with interest. He was busy tucking in, but still curious about the world and the wonders in it. He considered Devin's words as he ate the noodles and then he asked. "So, does this mean that you could make a ... pop up banquet? Or use this as a means to store ice cream in non-freezing places? Maybe could you shrink the food?" At the last one, he beamed in delight and looked at Devin with real fascination. Imagine that, he thought - being able to shrink food. "Maybe into cubes or small bars. But then, one drop of water and BAM!" The little dragon on his shoulder let out a burp of surprise. "Your cube becomes a proper meal. Oh that would be interesting!"

Of the water from nowhere, though, Teq grinned and then the spirit-hands appeared. Just a pair of hands, floating in the air. One of them waved to Devin. "That's Andy," Teq said. "My diri friend. He's very useful. I call him Handy Andy, do you see?" Andy turned his palms up in a shrug-like gesture. Somehow, it looked like a shrug, even though he had no shoulders. "There's a few of those around," Teq said. "Maybe you'll see another, too?"

When Devin asked Teq if he was a mortalborn, though, the Champion of Aeva gave a slight shrug. "I am simultaneously a mystery, wrapped in an enigma and shrouded in a conundrum whilst at the same time being just a simple and non-complex fellow." He smiled at Devin, obviously not quite prepared to divulge more than he had already. As for Aeva's blessing, he nodded. "It's great. She's great. You should make something you're really proud of and dedicate it to her. Or dedicate the process of making it to her. See what happens, she's the best Immortal, I think." He gave a wide and cheerful grin. "Though, I understand that opinions differ."

They ate together and then Devin told Teq of his plans with wine. Teq beamed. "Devin, I like you! You have an enquiring and intriguing mind. I would love to visit with you again," he said, and it was very obvious that he was entirely sincere. "I'll drop in again, with your permission, and see how the tunnels are coming on. Would that work for you?"

Teq was indeed ready to go, but he wanted to make sure that Devin was happy first and that he'd had all his questions answered.

“Not just any pop-up banquet!” Devin said in an enthusiastic tone of voice when Teq wanted to know if he could make a pop-up banquet and proceeded to smile all over his face. “A pop-up banquet that is fit for a king! I can also make pop-up ice cream and shrink food though! Food gets smaller if you dehydrate it. Oh, and I also have another idea!” he confided in Teq because he was just so excited to share the thought he had just had. “Have you ever tried to deep-fry ice cream? Or make breaded ice cream? Or deep-fried juice? I have all kinds of crazy food ideas. Maybe we could meet again sometime and cook together?” he wanted to know and smiled charmingly. He really liked Teq even though he was bald and wanted to get to know him better.

“How can Andy wave to me if he doesn’t have eyes to see me?” Devin wanted to know and furrowed his brow as he took a closer look at the diri before he grinned and waved back. He wasn’t too bothered by Andy’s lack of eyes, or a brain to think with; on the contrary, he thought the diri looked pretty cool. He was just tempted to call him “Andy Handy” instead, because he liked making up weird names and shifting letters in a way that made little to no sense.

Devin didn’t mind that Teq didn’t give him a clear answer as to whether he was a mortalborn. He just grinned at the other man and told him in a very serious tone of voice, “So am I! Except for the part about being a simple and non-complex fellow! I aim to be the most complex, confusing and mesmerizing fellow in all of Idalos and beyond!” he proclaimed before he wondered if inventing deep-fried ice cream and juice (and possibly a machine for it) and dedicating it to Aeva would be enough to gain her blessing.

He didn’t disagree when Teq said that Aeva was the best Immortal because people were allowed to have an opinion of their own, but he did remark, “Delroth is pretty awesome as well!”

“That would be perfect!”
Devin replied in a cheerful tone of voice when Teq suggested that he drop in again and see how the tunnels were coming on. “Maybe I’ll already have a bit of wine for you then – or deep-fried ice cream or another pop-up meal! That would be a good name for my invention, don’t you think? Pop-up meals!” he said and smiled before he asked Teq again, because it seemed as if the Champion of Aeva had missed his question, and he really wanted to know, “About your coat though?”

No matter if Teq answered his question or not (Although he really hoped that he would!), Devin would eventually bid him farewell and gesture for Andy to follow him because he did indeed look quite useful and handy, and he couldn’t wait to show him off.

Waving a hand in a shrug-like gesture as to how a pair of arms saw, Teq focused on a different thing Devin said. "I would LOVE to cook together" Teq enthused as Devin suggested it. He would indeed be very interested in it and would enjoy it. There were all sorts of possibilities that he was sure they would bring to reality. Devin asked again about the coat and Teq beamed. "I love my coat, it's wonderful," he said, honestly. "Daia made it for me. Isn't she kind? It may be the single most useful thing I've ever been gifted. Lucky old me!" And yes, pop up meals sounded like an excellent name, he was happy to confirm.

However, it was time to go and Teq did just that. Just before he did though, he glanced at one of the many creatures around the place - creatures only he could see and which were invisible to Devin's eyes. But still. They did what he silently asked and, when Devin returned home, he'd know what that was.
