The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

Raelia - City Description

Raelia

Jewel and Capital of Melrath
Image

The capital of Melrath, Raelia is an imposing city seated at the mouth of the Vynmur River. The city boasts a population of roughly 2,700,000 inhabitants who live and work within the city. The architecture of Raelia consists of a curious mix of styles, many of which originated from Ne’haer. However most of the structures within the city are made of a dark blue stone mined from the Melrathi Mountains and most buildings are based off an elegant gothic theme. Those rare few travelers that have managed to worm their way into the lands of Melrath often say that Raelia is Ne’haer’s dark sister city. With towering cobalt blue rooftops and streets paved in smooth gray river stone Raelia has come to be fondly called the Azure City by many foreigners.

Raelia itself is surrounded by a large wall made of the same bluish stone that stands in the shape of a fourteen sided tetrakaidecagon that stands as a representation of the fourteen members of the Circle and how these individuals protect the nation. The city itself is divided into three sections known as “Holds” that are divided by two other inner walls. There are four gates to each of the two inner walls and they are arranged with one to each cardinal direction. The outermost wall contains a single gate that faces toward the Ashara Citadel that guards it.

The Vaettir Hold is the outermost district and contains a vast array of residents. It is the home of the middle class of Raelia along with a multitude of shops and businesses. To the northwest are the docks and to the south exists a broad swath of apartments and cottages. The income level of residents tends to increase the further from the outer wall one lives. The poor and destitute are not tolerated within the city. You must either have a job/role, or enough wealth to be seen as having value. Most of those unable to afford citylife have moved into the wilderness surrounding Raelia and survive as best they can off the land.

The middle Hold seated between the secondary and central wall is known as the Alfar Hold which contains the majority of the wealthy residents of Raelia. Here rests some of the finest markets and shops within the region along with some of the most beautiful architecture within the city. The Alfar Hold is full of gorgeous public parks along with shrines to various well known spirits of Melrath. Many residences take the form of manor estates surrounded by gardens and personal walls to keep out the riff raff.

The final Hold of Raelia is quite small compared to the other two as it is contained within an area that is less than a square mile in size. This place is known as the Forseti Hold which primarily contains the headquarters of the Circle along with other structures pertaining to the government of Melrath. Additionally there is a central recruitment office here for the Ragnari; the military of Melrath.
