Planned GM Skills:
Singing

The Eternal Song: Kalortah likes the sound of his voice so much, he now never has to hear anyone else. Kalortah has trained his vocal chords to be able to create sound upon every inhale as well as exhale - meaning that he quite literally never has to stop singing, and is only limited by his performing stamina.

Undying Voice Kalortah cannot be silenced. He has such a command over his voice that injury, illness, and even some magical effects cannot prevent him from using his voice the way he means for to.

Shape of the Wind Kalortah began his singing career always admiring the shape of the soundwaves upon the air, as his avriel sight afforded him. He's taken this combination of being able to 'see' his voice and gone a step further, able to form shapes on the air with his voice for any audience to perceive along with him. The singer can form lyrics so moving and vivid that his audience will be almost entirely transported, the scenes and imagery playing out in their eyes. This doesn't allow Kalortah to distract anyone if they are facing danger. The audience must be relaxed enough to listen. It can add an exquisite element to any singing performance that Kalortah gives, with entire scenes conjured out of thin air for a troupe of players to interact with. This effectively raises the quality of any performance by one skill level, for any accompanying players or artists who play with Kalortah.

Battle-Chant: Kalortah can project and refine his voice to such power and degree, that it becomes classed as a ranged weapon, using the Combat: Ranged skill to project a forceful strike - capable of as much blunt force impact as a punch from his fist. It is delivered at a distance of 30 meters with its accuracy tapering off afterward until about 60 meters. At close range, roughly ten meters or closer, it will not do actual damage, but temporarily stun and impair the hearing of anyone lacking endurance. He cannot rapid-fire his voice, however, and must wait at least five trills for novice, three for competent, 2 for expert, and 1 for master. The speed, power, and efficiency of his voice can increase with his Combat: Ranged, Strength, and Endurance skills.

Warrior Skald: While chanting a wordless hymn, Kalortah can modulate his voice to reach very low frequencies, to the point of infrasound. While within the hearing range of this hymn, characters that possess lesser discipline and meditation will find themselves with an inexplicable sense of terror and unease. Every bit spent within the range of the hymn will unravel another wave of terror. Until finally ten bits spent within the range of the infrasound hymn, they will begin to see terrors in every shadow.
Flying

Stormwing: He is able to fly through disturbances, weather, and obstacles without hindrance.

Sohr Kalortah: Kalortah has become as agile and swift on the wing with his natural ability to fly as a Sohr Khal is, and can match and even exceed their speed and agility on the air. However this enhancement of form cannot be maintained forever, and is governed heavily by Kalortah's endurance to continue at this speed for any length of time.

Flying First Class: Through a variety of techniques and sheer comfort with which he flies upon the air, Kalortah has learned to fly over great distances more efficiently. This halves his travel time while engaging in personal flight.

Sea Wings: Many an avriel has found their ability to traverse great distances on the ocean is truncated by the absence of places to rest their wings. Through a variety of methods, including carrying on the intense wind currents over the ocean, and engaging in glide, Kalortah is able to traverse the oceans for days on the wing, so long as he has sustenance on hand to keep his energy up. Mechanically this makes it possible for him to travel on the wing over the ocean.
Intimidation

Dirge-Singer: Kalortah has a great deal of experience in seeing the impact his words have upon others. Here, he's taken this as well as his intimidating nature to the next level. As long as he's able to speak or sing, he can word an insulting verse in such a way as to cast doubt upon a person, as to the efficacy of any skill, magic or non-magic, chosen by Kalortah. This can diminish a master to an expert, an expert to competence, and one from competence to novice. Only one skill can be affected this way, and the selected target must be able to hear his song. Grandmasters, Revealed, and Tier 2 skills cannot be so affected by this.

Untouchable Glory: Unless Kalortah is holding a weapon or has an immediate intention to harm another person, those who would otherwise be inclined to attack him will generally fall short of delivering fatal blows to him, but may cause otherwise debilitating damage or rough him up, as necessary, depending on their disposition.

Interminable Glory: Anyone that Kalortah locks eyes with, will be given pause before following through their intended action. This often gives Kalortah an opening through which to act, either offensively or defensively before the other commits to a course of action, whatever it might be.

Precision Insult: Kalortah can compel anyone he insults to a specific offensive action against himself or someone under his protection. Whether it's to prompt them to attack them verbally/physically, insult them back, steal from, or plot against them. Discipline, Meditation, and other mitigating factors that allow for emotional control can diminish the effectiveness of this ability.

Blinding Majesty: Kalortah spreads his brilliant wings, and for a few trills, the enemy if they lack resistance or endurance skill, may be blinded momentarily by his majesty.
Exotic (Battle-Chant

Delroth's Rebuke: After singing a dirge, whose verse goes on for about five trills, at the upward inflection of the last syllable, Kalortah unleashes a projectile wave that, while doing no direct damage, can take anything on the wing out of the sky for several bits.
Music: Drum

Everything is a Drum! The drummer can use any surface, object, or material as a percussive instrument, creating unique sounds that carry just as well as a dedicated instrument.

Re: Birds Plot Notes

Calamity's Point Enchantment
I'm spending 500 point bank points for a favored-level enchantment for an item. I wanted to add a tier 1 signature enchantment to an item my pc already owns. The item in question is this:
Calamity's Point (Masterwork+ Adamantite Rapier)

Acquired: Acquired here
Material: Adamantite
Quality: Masterwork+
The Sword: The rapier’s swept hilt was forged adamantite, burgundy in color with gold filigree. Shaped as a flock of birds in flight around the handle, so as to protect the hand, the blade itself was also of adamantite, a thin triangular cross-section that ensured a stiff blade with a sharp point for thrusting. The pommel was also of adamantite, with the same gold filigree as the rest of the hilt.
As for the enchantment I had in mind, it's a little different from most that I see on the mark and magic list. Here's how I see it working:

Calamity's point can duplicate the wielder's singing voice while moving it around, so that the sword sings independently of the wielder's own vocal chords. They have control over the words and vocal range/quality/sound coming from the sword. It can key in on any singing or vocal related abilities that the wielder possesses, but this doesn't let the wielder double up or ignore the limitations on cooldowns or uses per trial for any ability. If an ability is only allowed to be used once in a trial, they may only use it through their own voice OR through the sword. Not both. The wielder can sing duets with their sword, however, and make on skill-level use of their singing ability simultaneously with the sword, whatever that skill level may be.

Thanks for taking a look!
Heya, I was going to do a story soon where Kalortah earns a couple of physical mutations from point bank. I decided to include both mutations in the same ticket, because it will all happen in the same story, so I figured that would be more convenient.

In the story, he will somehow get 'caught' between transformation to a human and an avriel, and ends up with mismatched human eyes that change the color of the iris based on mood. He also loses the transformation gem that was given to him by the Aeolian, although I haven't decided the details of the story apart from that.

He also takes on the physical form (while keeping his hollow bones and red wings/feathers and basic, internal avriel physiology) of his alter-ego Larza Impre/Karolis Lacrimine. Here is his revised prospective description:

Long feathers and neck-length hair stream from the avriel mortalborn's mane, colored onyx black and cardinal red. His brilliant, crimson wingspan is wider than his height ought to suggest at nearly three times his vertical height. Light skin covers the rest of his body. Standing at 5'8" with a willowy frame but strong muscle definition. His hair is entirely onyx with red feathers throughout. He has no beard and not a trace of facial hair.

Mortalborn of Phoenixes Expansion

1. Is the Mortalborn power in line with the existing rules of Mortalborn powers, i.e., level of power, drawbacks (if any), don't control other characters?

Twice a season, from a feather off of one of his own wings (the feather would grow back within a cycle), Kalortah may ignite that feather to create a fire that can heal individuals. This fire, when used to immolate a person, can begin to heal any surface or subdermal wounds it touches with its heat. Up to four moderate, two serious, and/or one fatal wound can be healed in this way. This ability cannot be used during combat, as it requires a relatively controlled setting in an event that borders on the ritualistic, where oil is spread over the person's wounds and body. Kalortah can use this for healing on himself, but it's far more risky when using it in a selfish way, as he must maintain composure in the face of the agony it causes. The flames do cause pain even as they heal.

2. Is the plot leading up to the acquisition of this power sufficient, does it relate to the Mortalborns domains or their abilities, do they use it frequently?

The frequency of use clause is a problem for this domain, as the power that it involves is by necessity only useable once a cycle. I was hoping that by meditating on the power, and having several instances where it nearly activates, might suffice? Where he was contemplating dying but then pulls back as it happens that he didn't need to?

3. Have they submitted a plot that will now cover the acquisition of the new power they mention in the PSF. This plot needs to be significant to the character in question, but it does not need to be modded.
Proposed Tracker
The tracker will include probably things that relate to his devotion to Delroth as well as his Phoenix domain. As such I expect or hope that a few of the threads may be sufficient to Tarouz advancement. There's also a few plot points involving the Empire I'd like to include more or less loosely, but we'll see how that shakes out in this tracker I'm making. I'll be self-modding this tracker if it's okay. It will also, necessarily, span two different cycles because of the way Phoenix plumage works.
  • Reminisce over his earlier experiences, particularly with themes involving his rebirth and return from death at some points. His recoveries from grave injury, and will even write a few songs to perform at the Concert Festival in the Hotlands Border Zone in the Empire.
  • Explore Aeva's Peak, looking for signs of the mythical Phoenix among the bird species there, but ultimately failing to locate an actual phoenix.
  • Explore the reverence that certain tribals and primitives may have for the mythical bird, the Phoenix. Particularly the Hotlands tribes.
  • Get into a few near-fatal situations, where he begins to use his phoenix plumage ability but then pulls back just before his wings began to catch fire.
  • Meditate on his discovery of the power of Phoenix Plumage, and what it may mean if he uses it to die at will, turning to ash and then resurrecting later.
  • Actually get into a situation where he uses the ability to induce his own fiery death. Whereupon his ashes are transported to the phoenix urn.
  • Resurrect the next cycle, as the ashes escape the Phoenix urn to form a newly reborn Kalortah.
  • He finds his lover, Lotema, in her grief at his death has greivously wounded herself. At this point, he'd discover the new ability that this ticket concerns, and use the ritual to heal her wounds.
4. Have they detailed the Fracturing scars they will get as a result.

In his native form, he'd form a network of fracture scars along the first section of wing-limb, which radiates out to the feathers of that limb. The fracture scars glow white and are very apparent.

Re: Birds Plot Notes

Vanity’s Mirror

Image

Description: This village is carved into a Quarry that resides in the eastern slopes of the foothills northwest of Westwind Ruins.

A shrine to Delroth is built upon the waters of the Quarry, in the center of the lake using stone from the Quarry. Here, it’s said the breeze flies through the pillars and crevasses of the Temple, creating aerial images that are visible only to Avriel eyes. There are even times when it is said the likeness of Delroth can be seen through these aerial images. But such sightings are held to be borderline heretical, even among the Talons of Calamity.

Along the shores of the lake, several huts have sprung up, built from mudbrick and wood and inhabited by workers who are paid well to carve usable stone and conveyances for such, all the way to the Hotlands.

The foreman, a wingless avriel who refused to join the talons, known as Tarxisle, toils among the workers, overseeing their efforts.

Name: Tarxisle
Race: Avriel
Age: Saun 20th 681
Title: Foreman
Moderation Type: Self
Able/Willing to Mentor?: Yes
Skills able/willing to Mentor in: 56 Mining (Expert), 26 Logistics (Competent), 26 Engineering (Competent), 26 Discipline (Novice), 26 Combat: Axes & Bludgeons (Competent)
Other Information: Tarx is a dour avriel. He was rendered wingless, for a long forgotten political crime against an Athartian Noble. For many years he languished in slavery under the Slave Raiders of Athart, the intention of his overlords having been to drive him madness doing manual labor, toiling in the Quarries.

Despite their efforts at breaking him, Tarx found peace in his work. The daily and nightly exercise brought him through the trauma of losing his wings. Through Discipline, he learned to overcome his physical impairment, and rediscovered his pride and streength.

Sometime during his imprisonment, he was freed by Venelisla, the crime for which Venelisla was also banished from Athart. While Tarx refused to join the Talons of Calamity after they made the run to Yaralon, he agreed to support his good friend Venelisla in anyway he could, short of joining up with the company.

Tarx has crow-like feathers, and possesses a physical stature that exceeds that of most avriel. His feathers are mottled black and gray, and his eyes are blue. He stands at 5’10”.

Venelisla

Name: Venelisla
Race: Avriel
Age: 5th Cylus 687
Title: Lieutenant of the Talons of Calamity

Able/Willing to Mentor?: Yes
Skills able/willing to Mentor in: 56 Flying (Expert), 26 Polearm[Sword-Staff] (Competent), 26 Hunting (Competent), 26 Detection (Competent), 26 Tactics (Competent)
Other Information: Prefers to wear the hides and bones of his own kills, Venelisla isn’t one for hoarding finery and jewels, despite his reverence for Delroth. He tries to instill this sense of moderation in the lower rungs of the Company, to various degrees of failure.

Nevertheless, he spares no expense when it comes to paying homage to Delroth. Much of his personal loot share goes to offerings to the Winged Calamity. Particularly items of beauty.

He founded the Talons of Calamity when he became disillusioned with the state of Athartian society. It’s decadence and the impossible standards of purity which were the death of innovation.

He’s an idealist that wishes to show his people the right way to be, and formed his mercenary company with that intention in mind. That they could live up to the expectations of perfection that Delroth had for them so long ago on their creation. That their outer beauty could be matched with an inner perfection.

Venelisla was exiled from Athart permanently, and became an outlaw to his own kind when he freed Tarx from his prison, and brought the large wingless avriel north to Yaralon, through Maiden’s refuge. They fought their way through it all, up until they reached the city.

Mercenary Company

Company Name: The Talons of Calamity
Company Size: Small
Leader: Kalortah
Contract Specialization: Aerial Assault, Aerial Surveillance.
Current Defensive or Resource Gathering Duty: Scouting, Falconry, Hunting, Aerie Keepers
Outlying Village: Vanity’s Mirror
Requirements for Joining: Weapon Skill (Any save Siege engines), Flying, Mount (Flying), Acrobatics, Falconry, Hunting, and/or Detection.
History of the Company: Founded by a collection of Avriel outcasts, after being driven out of their native Athart by a mix of political artifice as well as disagreement with the status quo. The Heralds of Calamity had found themselves without a unifying purpose. They take any and all Avriel, even those whose wings have been mutilated and destroyed by the cruel and unjust punishments of their kind.

They aren’t above taking on non-avriel, although those will have to be exceptional cases and men/women capable of riding a flying mount or else exceptional skill in the ancillary skills required for joining (Detection/hunting/falconry).

Controversially, they also allow for Half-avriels in their ranks, which is a point of contention within the mercenary group that often leads to friction between members and new recruits.

In a way, they’re paving a way for an Avriel reformation, one that allows for the return of all the wayward Avriel who’ve been deemed unworthy, and ascending to become worthy in Delroth’s eyes. Devoted to Delroth, the creator that spurned, they seek his approval and blessing by improving their natural savagery with control and discipline.

All-Colors Point

Hello, I wanted to have Kalortah settle an area west of Athart, in a cliffy/craggy island which he can carve a castle out of by paying artisan masons and their slaves from Athart to build it.

The initial building would be the All-Colors Palace, Kalortah's home and the central location of the settlement. While I haven't worked out the detailed layout (in terms of rooms, room sizes, how many rooms) etc. I estimate it will cost at least 100 wp when all is said and done, but almost certainly more than that.

I'd be setting up Kalortah's escape/move out of Rharne in placeholders, but the actual establishment of the settlement will occur in the current cycle.

Anyway, here's the settlement info so far that I've decided on:

Player Name: Kalortah
Lead Mod: ????
Founding Skill: Intimidation (Master at the time of posting this but will soon GM)
Survival Skill: Politics (Competent at the time of posting this)
Growth Skill: Singing (GM At the time of posting this)

Settlement Aesthetic
Image
Settlement Name: All-Colors Point
Settlement Location: Island in the Crescent Sea
Description: A religious community devoted to the Immortal Delroth and his promotion. They take up in a castle carved from the cliffs of an island west of Athart. The All-Colors Palace and the surrounding settlement will be built by Kalortah's own personal funds. Ostensibly they are a peaceful community of bohemians, artists, thespians, and bards who take generous donations from pilgrims and other types in exchange for the kind favor of the Immortal of Wind, Birds, and Greed. Beneath the surface, however, they operate, survive, and make much of their tax by holding to ransom treasures hidden by their allied pirate fleets and other low-lives, who bank their ill-gotten treasure in the island or launder their gains by trading them for treasures that others have stolen.

Effects:
LOCATION NPCS:
PLACES OF INTEREST: The All-Colors Palace (Kalortah's home/central location and the place where most of the settlers will initially take up living out of)
SETTLEMENT AESTHETICS: Craggy Island which much of the structures throughout are carved out of. There are not many points of access to those who cannot fly onto it, so they will either need to be carried or ride a flying mount.

Singing Scrublands

K, so I'm requesting an appearance from U'frek!

Kalortah is the son of U'frek.

If I may, I'll want to use the following as part of the thread where he appears to Kalortah. He'll be delivering Kalortah's mistress and their baby together, having saved them at sea or something. hopefully that's not too consequential for the scope of this sorta meeting. It all happened in the background, this is just him delivering them to Kalortah in Yaralon.

I'm sharing part of the story as a qualifier for using him in this social thread. If more is needed, I can provide it.

Image

Blind Oarsman and the Albatross

Kalortah rested in his bed in the Temple of Delroth, a windowed suite that they'd afforded him, in due course because of his high status in the estimation of their patron. It wasn't far from the Golden Gate of Yaralon, and the great Harbor beyond, so the sound of seabirds wasn't particularly unusual. Except, something about this aquatic avian seemed familiar. It almost sounded... like...

The avriel lifted his head from his pillow, and gazed up at the stone window's ledge, which was open to let fresh air in. On it, was perched none other than Boss Gosling. How had the goose found him? He thought he'd left him safe and sound in the Aerie?

Boss Gosling squawked, and flapped its wings imperiously, demanding attention. Kalortah rose to kneel on the bed, and frowned as he listened to the meaning of the bird's sounds. It was not easy to interpret, even for one who could speak with birds, but Gosling appeared very flustered, perhaps even disappointed. Eventually when all of the rigmarole of his greivances were addressed and relayed, Kalortah got to hear the meat of his purpose here.

He had come to deliver a message from a blind ferryman, who wanted to meet with Kalortah.

Well of course a blind ferryman did. However, the location for this meeting and the circumstances made Kalortah wonder for just a moment. He wanted to meet on the open seas, on a large raft-skiff that he was standing upon. Kalortah furrowed his brow. But something in the wind, a wordless assurance convinced him that it was true.

"Very well, I'll meet them. I'll search for this skiff..."

Boss Gosling squawked again, telling him to look out for the blind oarsman, and a raft with a sail upon it, stood on buoyant barrels. Then, he was most rudely off to his own devices. Kalortah hoped he would return to safety, or else the Aerie.

There was little for it, but to get dressed, so that was what Kalortah did, in addition to making himself up to look as presentable as possible. It wasn't a hard task for one of his brilliance and beauty, but he liked to take care all the same, for the sake of his patron who outshone so many of his followers.

About a break later, Kalortah took to the air, spreading his red wings against the wind and flying fast over the Golden Gate, and toward the coast, where many ships were at anchor. It took some looking, but he saw a lonely oarsman on a dinghy, a raft with a singular sail above it.

He flew toward that raft, and with a graceful touch down, folded his wings behind him. He inclined his head toward the blind oarsman, who had a shaggy head of bleached hair, and rheumy eyes. He didn't look directly at Kalortah, as he appeared to be blind anyway, but smiled at the sound of his footfalls and his subsequent greeting.

"Good man, I've received a summons to this raft..." The avriel turned his head, cocking it to the side. On the raft, was a small shack, barely adequate for one person.

"Aye, yes ah..." The rheumy-eyed mariner nodded, looking down at the waters as he set his oar to the side. "We've been expectin ya. We're here to have a word..."

This said, he stepped to the edge of the raft, and clapped the blind oarsman on the back. With that, he said one last thing, that left Kalortah positively dumbstruck. "It's so nice isn't it, to have three generations reunited after so long?"

Kalortah frowned, what was meant by that. Surely the blind ferryman couldn't be any relation of his, unless he was some disgraced example of their kind, stripped of his wings or else a halfriel... Three? Kalortah counted the child, who he surmised must have been his own get by Lotema... and then himself and Lotema. Where was the third... He wasn't suggesting that he was Kalortah's father. No, he would've owned up to it by now.

The bilnd oarsman croaked out a few words, low and soft in his unassuming tone, "Your beloved can tell you how we found her, and the babe. That story is not mine to share."

Kalortah turned to the oarsman, and furrowed his brow. Something seemed oddly familiar about him. He'd never felt this sensation before, of belonging to something or someone. But he perceived some kind of connection to this ragged traveller. What could it be? Three generations.... was that...

"But then, Delroth wasn't talking about your truancy, although it might've been better for everyone if you'd stuck around in the Aerie."

The Oarsman smiled sadly, from the baby in Lotema's arms, to then Kalortah. "I am U'frek, your father."

Kalortah stood struck for a moment, and despite his best attempts to maintain composure, lost the strength in his knees, as he fell to the floor of the raft, barely holding himself up.

Re: Birds Plot Notes

Heya, I wanted to start a Settlement, and a Mercenary Business/faction in Yaralon. I was hoping to put this forward in a singular request as they're going to be tied into each other. First the establishment of the Mercenary Group, then the founding of Vanity's Mirror.

If that's okay? I'll include a business app too in my second post.

  1. Name of Settlement: Vanity's Mirror
  2. Location of Settlement: Yaralon (The Spines)
  3. Theme of Settlement: A religious and paramilitant settlement/fiefdom dedicated to the worship of Delroth and the virtues he represents.
  4. How this settlement will be founded (ensure you identify a Founding Skill which relates to this). Leadership (Master), with Kalortah's personal funds.
  5. How this settlement will survive (ensure you identify a Survival Skill which relates to this). It will be difficult to attack from any other angle than above, as it's not built for access to groundlings or those without flying mounts. Flying skill (Master)
  6. What the focus of this settlement is: A religious community dedicated to Delroth. They use their voices generallly to praise Delroth and cheer each other.
  7. Where the initial settlers will come from: Possibly Athart, Nashaki, Yaralon and other places. Wherever wild Avriel may be seeking a new home.
  8. What resources will be needed for startup - Lots of Wealth Points. Kalortah is rich, and will be using his own funds to bank roll the settlement.
  9. Will this Settlement exist inside or outside the law? Yaralon has no real laws. So I suppose outside.

    Player Name: Kalortah
Lead Mod: Wanderer? Probably a moot point tho.
    Founding Skill: Leadership (Master)
    Survival Skill: Flying (Master)
    Growth Skill: Singing (GM)

    Settlement Name: Vanity's Mirror
Settlement Location: Yaralon (Bastard's Grove or perhaps the Spines)
Description: This village is carved into a Quarry that resides in the eastern slopes of the foothills northwest of the first ridge of the Spines

A shrine to Delroth is built upon the waters of the Quarry, in the center of the lake using stone from the Quarry. Here, it’s said the breeze flies through the pillars and crevasses of the Temple, creating aerial images that are visible only to Avriel eyes. The foreman, a wingless avriel who refused to join the talons, known as Tarxisle, toils among the workers, overseeing their efforts.

Vanity’s Mirror

Image

Description: This village is carved into a Quarry that resides in the eastern slopes of the foothills northwest of the Spines.

Tarxisle

Tarxisle

Image

Venelisla

Image
Name: Venelisla
Race: Avriel
Age: 5th Cylus 687
Title: Lieutenant of the Talons of Calamity
Moderation Type: Self
Able/Willing to Mentor?: Yes
