Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Thrilling Beetle
Image
Developed by Oram Mednix
Price: Wealth Tier 8

Habitat: Sweetvine Woods

Lifespan and Development: Thrilling beetles have an annual life and breeding cycle, hatching in early Ashan from eggs planted in wood the previous cold season. After a brief larval period they progress quickly through three instar periods to full maturity. They breed and lay eggs typically in late Vhalar or early Zi’da. Most adults then die over Cylus, but a few survive into another arc. These superannual survivors almost never breed a second time, however.

Diet: Like most wood-boring beetles, the thrilling beetle burrows into wood and then eats the shavings it creates. It usually eats rotting wood, but will sometimes attack healthy wood, as well. The thrilling beetle has a strong preference for whistling wood, though it will eat other kinds.

Temperament: Docile and harmless unless you’re made of wood.

Abilities: The thrilling beetle is much more interesting than the typical boring beetle, although this will not be apparent simply by looking at it. The most remarkable trait of the thrilling beetle is the sound that it produces by beating its wings: a low, musical hum known as “thrilling”. This hum has a strong soothing effect on most creatures that can hear it -so strong, in fact as to suppress any aggressive urge the creature hearing it might feel. Birds will lose the urge to attack and eat it; people will suddenly find themselves unable to bring themselves to smash it, or anything else. A person confronting one will not spontaneously conceive a desire to harm it, while carrying through with a prior resolve to do so requires at least Competent Discipline. The effect only lasts while the tone is audible (within a few feet for an individual bug), and dissipates immediately on cessation. The beetle typically only thrills if it feels threatened, or is looking for a mate.

This aggession-suppressing effect does not extend to simply capturing the beetles, and the bugs are content with being gently handled. Thus, thrilling beetles may be collected. Doing so is discouraged, however, as introducing the thrilling beetle to areas where its specialized predators are absent can lead to infestation, since most creatures won’t hunt it!

Weaknesses: Small and squashable. Has no real defenses against predators unaffected by its thrilling.

Using It: Expert if in the Sweetvine. Master otherwise. The thrilling behavior is difficult to elicit on demand, especially outside the beetle’s natural habitat.
-- Use 1 Thrilling can calm individuals who are extremely agitated.
-- Use 2 A suitably skilled negotiator might deploy thrilling beetles in a tense confrontation to prevent escalation. Note: the thrilling won’t make the other parties more compliant to the user’s demands, only less likely to attack them.

Capturing It: Novice. The thrilling beetle is quite docile and easy to handle.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Moss Bunny
Image
Developed by DARIUS BAER
Price: Tier 7
Habitat: The moss bunny is a social creature, and as such, tends to live in a colony with dozens of its kind. They often dwell in underground warrens, though these are not always easy to identify due to the similarity in appearance between a moss bunny and the grass under which it dwells. These warrens can appear in fields and forests alike, although the latter is more common, as the moss bunny will often rest in the shade of a large tree, especially during the warmer seasons of Ymiden and Saun. When they huddle in this way, moss bunnies look like a large, bumpy expanse moss. Wild moss bunnies are believed to exist only in Sweetwine Wood, but a domesticated moss bunny could live just about anywhere with a temperate climate.
Lifespan and Development: In the wild, a moss bunny has a life expectancy of 2 to 3 arcs, due to the risks of starvation, disease, and predators. A domesticated moss bunny has a much longer life expectancy of 8 to 10 arcs. Moss bunnies are active breeders, and can give birth to a litter every few seasons.
Diet: Like its non-moss counterpart, the moss bunny is a herbivore, and grazes mostly on grass, weeds, and certain flowers. Like normal rabbits, the moss bunny also eats some of its own droppings as a digestive aid.
Temperament: The moss bunny is an intelligent creature, but each one's personality varies from bunny to bunny. Most are docile, but some can be willful or destructive.
Abilities: The moss bunny is fast and agile, and these are its main defenses against predators. If pursued, they will usually attempt to run in quick and haphazard movements, so that they might evade and confuse their predator, rather than outrun them.
Weaknesses: In the wild, a moss bunny is susceptible to disease, starvation, and predators like foxes, stoats, and birds of prey. Domestication dramatically reduces the risk of all of these

Shaggyoats
Image
Developed by Kirei Qe'Azour
Price: Tier 7
Habitat: Hope Farm, Beacon and Hopetoun, Scalvoris. They are a new breed of goats created by Raihi Hale and her husband.
Lifespan and Development: The same as any type of goat
Diet: Grass, leaves, any vegetation they can find
Temperament: Shaggyoats are normally quite docile. The males can get aggressive during the mating season though as they try to protect and impress their females. They are also quite intelligent for goats; more like a dog in intelligence. And they can get quite attached to the people that take care of them. For this reason, they make good pets.
Abilities: Unlike most goats, woolly goats produce a nice coat of very soft wool that can be sheared and used to make wool clothing, blankets, etc. just as sheep wool can.
Weaknesses: The same as any goat.

In this thread Darius Baer has discovered a SECRET about the Shaggyoats.
"A small number of Shaggyoats have escaped from Hope Farm and have been seen in the open fields and hills between Beacon and Scalvoris Town. The owner of Hope Farm has his hands full with the breeding program and after a failed attempt at reclaiming the animals, has decided to cut his losses and assumes they won't last long in the wild. If someone was to collect/capture some of them, they could in theory breed them and acquire their own source of milk and wool, though some consideration may need to be given to compensating the owner of Hope Farm."

Should Darius manage to collect / capture some of these Shaggyoats he will discover that, in fact, they are prone to escaping and will chew their way out of fences and try to jump over walls. Slippery little suckers!

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Cold Mason - Worker
Image
Developed by Nicholas Erobern
Price: Corpse - Tier 7 in Scalvoris, Tier 9 anywhere else. Dies in 10 trials after being captured.

Habitat: Throughout Scalv but have to be somewhere cold, since they are so very susceptible to heat.

Lifespan and Development: Unknown. Have no reproducing organs. Dies in 10 trials after being captured. Each specimen is 40 - 45 cm long and, when empty, 3 kg.

Diet: Omnivore, but gains part of its nutrition through filtering water.

Temperament: Skittish. If possible, will attempt hiding underground. Otherwise, will attempt to run away. In a large group, will try overwhelming the prey if it's size-wise smaller than the insect.

Abilities: These insectoids have two small stomachs, a filter(thin layer of a membrane) for ingested water(no matter if it is in form of liquid, snow, or ice), and a large sac in their abdomen that can be filled with water. When it is full the mason's bottom half of its body swells three times its normal size. From this water than they produce ice that doesn't melt when exposed to warmth and generates cold of its own. In cold weather (one where ice would usually form), this ice is as durable as iron or steel. In warmer months, though, it becomes fragile, like glass. The mason's mandibles can chew through wood and bone, their bodies cold to the touch, and, as they have no eyes, they depend on tremor sense.

Weaknesses: Cold Mason's are incredibly susceptible to any kind of heat. Once the air becomes warm enough for ice and snow to melt their bodies start rotting while them being still alive. The mason dies in a span of a trial. Aside from the insect's head and legs, its body is soft and easy to damage. Due to their short legs, they aren't fast and can be caught by most people.

Ignis Clam

Developed by Elisabeth Angelus & Balthazar Black
Image

Found only in the sand and water surrounding Faldrass, the Ignis Clams are something of an enigma. Their beautiful rainbow-colored shells are prized for art and gifts. The shells and meat possess several unique qualities.

Found Only in the volcanic sands of Faldrass.
Toxicity/Hazard Not itself but it is recommended to cook clams before eating to kill lingering bacteria
Appearance Unique rainbow shells in varying colors, measuring about three inches across at the hinge. A larger variety of clam.

Properties
- Due to the volcanic nature of the island, the inner shell is incredibly reflective and can be polished and used for small mirrors.
- The shell itself is heat-resistant due to developing in volcanic sand.
- The meat of the clam is densely packed with iron (the mineral) due to where the clam develops and grows.
- Ignis clams occasionally will contain a rare 'Fire pearl'. These are coveted by jewelers around Idalos for their rarity and beauty.
- The meat of the clam has a slightly lemony taste when cooked.

Rarity Rare - Found only in the volcanic sand on Faldrass - Currently, there would be a thriving population of them due to depopulation of the island after the eruption. (Arc 721 Unusual)

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Snarkle
Image
Price: NA
Habitat: Swampy areas around Scalvoris
Lifespan and Development: In the wild, snarkles live for approximately ten arcs. But as a beloved pet, their lifespan can be doubled or even tripled due to the good care they are given. They are considered to be adolescents at two arcs of age, and adults at three arcs. At three arcs of age, females begin to lay three to five eggs a season. Most of these eggs are never fertilized, and can be used as a food source. Once the lingering chill of Cylus is completely gone (early to mid Ashan), mating season begins, and it lasts through the end of Ashan. Only during this time are any eggs laid fertilized. Snarkles mate for life, and in the wild, if one of a mated pair dies, the other will often pine itself to death unless the survivor is a female with young to raise. If this is the case, the female will take care of its young until they can care for themselves. They may pine themselves to death after their young can thrive on their own, or they may continue on in a solitary existence for the remainder of their lives. In very rare cases, a female may find another mate. Snarkles that are kept as pets will mourn the loss of their mate if they have one, but they will not pine themselves to death because their attachment to their owners is greater than that to their mates. They will however pine themselves to death if their owner dies or abandons them unless it is a female with young to raise, in which case they may become attached to another owner if presented with one who showers them with care and love while they are raising their young.

It takes sixty trials for the eggs to hatch, during which time the male will take care of his mate by bringing her food so she doesn't have to leave her eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the offspring will remain with their parents until they reach adulthood. Snarkle females with young to raise will continue to lay eggs each season, but none of them will be fertile.

Snakrles are fairly small creatures. Adults are the size of house cats while their young are the size of kittens when young and half grown kittens as adolecsents.
Diet: Plants, water plants, algae, and small fish.
Temperament: Snarkles are playful, affectionate, intelligent creatures.
Abilities: Their fur is water proof, and they are able to hold their breath for several bits. Their keen eyes can see through the murkiest swamp water, and their intelligence makes then hard to capture.
Weaknesses: Their lack of natural weapons makes them easy to kill if caught.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Etchwing
Image
Developed by DARIUS BAER
Price: Tier 8
Habitat: Etchwings can be found all over Faldrass and its coastlines. They tend to to nest in high places, on precipices or in the upper reaches of tall trees.
Lifespan and Development: Very little is known about the development of etchwings, or their nating habits, but it is believed that they can live for more than a dozen arcs. An adult etchwing typically stands around 4ft tall with a wingspan in excess of 8ft, and with a large beak and giant talons.
Diet: Etchwings are predatory carnivores, and they primarily eat small mammals and birds, either as live creatures or as carrion. Depending on their proximity to water, etchwings may also hunt fish.
Temperament: Socially, etchwings are largely solitary creatures, and they are known to be territorial. While they do not typically attack people without provocation, they have been known to do so when threatened.
Abilities: The etchwing is a master of stealth. Its name originates from the fact that when it is hiding, little can be seen beyond the very outline of the creature, which - in some environments - looks like as if it has been etched onto the background surface. Upon its death, the etchwing becomes much more visible, with its feathers displaying a vast array of bright, beautiful colours.
Weaknesses: Etchwings rely on their stealth, size, and high nesting places to intimidate would-be predators. Beyond that, they are no more safe than the average bird.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Boil Weevil
Image
Developed by Kisaik
Price: Tier 5
Habitat: Sub-tropical areas. Particularly around Scaltoth and Faldrass.
Lifespan and Development: Larval stage lasts for the mid-Ymiden Trials, and pupae stage proceeds for the latter half of Ymiden. They emerged most often during the Saun trials, or during heatwaves. They do not hibernate but maintain their colonies deep under dirt hills, tar pits, or volcanic caverns, where they maintain a room temperature through their immediate vicinity, giving them the ability to survive in cold environs, albeit deep underground.
Diet: Voracious eaters of both wood and textile-based crops like Flax and Cotton.
Temperament: Pests that can be disposed of with good enough population of natural predators. Particularly fire ants, birds, spiders, and various other insect-eating mammals.
Abilities: Heat-resistant pests. Drought and even brushfires can't wipe out the eggs or colonies of these bugs. In fact, burning them only enriches their habitat. They spit boiling-hot saliva at predators and farmhands alike, which causes light burns.
Weaknesses: Using water to drown their colonies, whether dug into cotton trees or else dug into the earth. They are called Boil Weevils for the fact that they cause the water used to dispose of their colonies to boil when it rises to the surface.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Sombresma (Horse)
Image
Developed by Natalia Gregorios
Origins A rare breed, the Sombresma's origins are a bit clouded in mystery. Said to be created as an offering to Chamadarst, these gorgeous creatures feature coats that shine like glass.
Price: Tier 8
Habitat: Native to the Outlands of Egilrun, wild Sombresma often migrate towards the coast during warm cycles and inland during cold cycles.
Lifespan and Development: Sombresmas have a shoulder height of 14-16 hands (56”-64” | 142-163 cm), an overall weight in the range of 900-1000 lb (408-454 kg) and a typical lifespan of 20 arcs.
Diet: Native grasses, grains, and a bit of sand are the preferred diet of the Sombresma breed. The sand helps with their particular type of digestion and is essential to the health of the horse to keep things moving within its digestive tract. Without the addition of at least sand in their diet, their tract will seize, which is life-threatening to the animal. The amount of sand needed per trial equals out about a half pound.
Temperament: Noted for its exceptional calm, the Sombresma breed naturally seems to be un-spookable, holding its ground in most distracting situations. Unlike other breeds, the Sombresma are not highly sociable. In the wild, they prefer roaming with very small herds. When trained, the Sombresma will continue to be stand-offish to all those it is not familiar with.
Abilities: The Sombresma's greatest strength is its agility and balancing skills. This breed is as sure-footed on the loose ground (ie: sand, loose rock, etc) as solid ground. Their unique glass-like coats shine in the sun, obscuring their movements from preditors wishing to attack or capture them. Additionally, the ability can cause distraction during battle.
Weaknesses: Lack of sand in the Sombresma diet will prove to be life-threatening to the animal. Training takes a firm touch as the animals are highly intelligent, and they know it. Their intelligence is not near human levels of sentience/sapience, however.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Lowland Livesta (Horse)
Image
Developed by Natalia Gregorios
Origins: Developed as a superior draft horse for heavy pulling required in the lumber industry, these horses have become popular throughout Scalvoris for their easy upkeep and calm temperament.
Price: Tier 5
Habitat: The forests outside Darbyton are the Lowland Livestas preferred habitat.
Lifespan and Development: Livestas are relatively small horses, standing between 12.2 and 16 hands high. While they may be shorter than your typical draft breed, they are broadly built and are easily capable of pulling carriages and caravans, while also serving as riding horses that can support heavier riders. They sport characteristic heavy feathering starting at their knees and hocks. A long, full mane and tail are also common traits.
Diet: Livestas tend to have a slower metabolism than your typical lightweight riding horse, so they need to eat a specific diet. Their slower metabolism can cause them to easily and quickly gain weight, and it also leaves them susceptible to metabolic issues. To combat these potential problems, many owners put their Livestas on a high-fat, low-sugar diet. Many of these horses do well with quality hay, oat, low-sugar vegetable diet.
Temperament: Docile, easy to train, and with a great temperament, the Livesta is a wonderful horse for just about anyone, experienced or inexperienced.
Abilities: No supernatural abilities other than to pull large amounts of weight, making them perfect for hauling wagons, vardos, and caravans.
Weaknesses: The heavy feathering requires constant upkeep.
