Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Paddlesnatch
Image
Price: Tier 6 for an intact shell. No known market for living paddlesnatches as they are too unpleasant, nor for their meat, which is generally considered foul-tasting.
Habitat: Lotic (fast-flowing) waters in Ol’ Tuck’s Run. Most common in Ol’ Tuck’s Rapids.
Lifespan and Development: Paddlesnatches are long-lived as are many turtles, and continue to grow throughout their lives. They may live upwards of 80 arcs. Mature paddlesnatches are known to range in size anywhere from 1 foot in diameter to 4 feet, and are believed to grow larger still.
Diet: Fish (especially loaches) and some river plants.
Temperament: Paddlesnatches are not aggressive, but are highly irritable and generally unapproachable.
Abilities: Paddlesnatches are large snapping turtles with powerful jaws that like to perch amongst rocks in rapids of Ol’ Tuck’s Run. The coloration and texture of their shells is such that they blend in with these rocks quite well. As a result, hapless canoers sometimes inadvertently prod these irascible turtles with their paddles while trying to navigate shallows and rapids.

This provokes the behavior that gives these creatures their name: the paddlesnatch will clamp the offending oar in its jaws and try to wrench it free from the startled canoer’s grasp. This can confront canoers with the unenviable choice between losing their oars in the Rapids and contesting control with the paddlesnatch in a tug-o’-war often vigorous enough to capsize their craft.

For those who cannot spare an oar, the best tactic is to hang onto the oar passively , waiting for the turtle to get tired and/or bored and let go on its own. Doing so successfully requires a skill level of Expert in one of, or Competent in at least two of, the following: Strength, Endurance, Discipline, Fieldcraft, Seafaring.

Weaknesses: Slow-moving. Unintelligent. Their lower carapace is softer than that of most turtles.

Faldrass Fire Worms
Image
Faldrass Fire Worms are small, harmless creatures that dwell within the upper reaches of the Hopetoun Hole, a few have been spotted throughout Faldrass following the eruption.

When in a dark environment, these worms glow through bioluminescence. Their orange and yellow colouring is such that when they glow, they bear a resemblance to tiny flames.

Faldrass Fire Worms are usually found in large numbers, and when in such a group, they often appear reminiscent of the stars in the night sky.

Although not exclusively located in the Hopetoun Hole, the Faldrass fire worms prefer dark and wet environments. In the case of the Hopetoun Hole, this means high up the walls or even hanging from the cave ceiling, well out of reach of the casual observer. In warmer weather, they can occasionally be found near waterfalls.

The diet of the Faldrass Fire Worm consists mostly of slugs and snails, and they are considered harmless to people.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Fayret
Image
Price: NA
Habitat: That of a typical squirrel.
Lifespan and Development: The same as a normal squirrel.
Diet: The Fayret eat seeds, nuts, and fruit.
Temperament: Fayret are clever creatures, having the intelligence of a border collie. They are quite curious, and are likely to approach people who enter their territory. But they also have a limited ability to sense intent. If someone approaches them who wished them harm, like a hunter, they can sense it, and they will make themselves scarce.

If someone takes the time to earn their trust, they can make affectionate pets. But their intelligence is such that they must be kept entertained, or they will find their own entertainment, often in ways that their owners would not appreciate.
Abilities: Fayret have the ability to mimic sounds and voices that they hear, much in the same way that some birds can. They also have the abilities any other squirrel has, such as climbing, etc.
Weaknesses: The same as a typical squirrel.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Lunar Spider
Image
Developed by Woe
Price: A mating pair is affordable to tier 7+ All others must pay around 4 wp to procure a pair.
Habitat: Forested areas, where a web may easily be woven. They seem to have a strong preference for willow trees and large, solitary trees.
Lifespan and Development: A mating pair can live for decades. Mosts Lunar Spiders born are male, however they are swiftly eaten by the larger female, until she has had her fill and reaches 'courtship' age. Here, she tests the remaining males in a brood, and will often systematically eat the ones that fail to impress her with their web-weaving skills. Particularly large broods are marked by great glowing webs, spreading from bough to bough in a tree, illuminating it in the moonlight. Due to the ratio of male to female (500:1) the breeding of such specimens takes great skill in either husbandry or agriculture, or else some other advantage in order to procure an ideal mating pair.

Their mating seasons often occur twice a season, with the exception of Saun, during which they are largely dormant. They are most prolific during Cylus, through which they mate every other day, the female bearing many egg sacs which she deposits far from its lair or main web.

Diet: Food is one issue that Lunar spiders rarely have to worry about. Their glowing webs often attract an abundance of insects, which get caught easily in the web. They subsist on insects mainly, but have been known to devour smaller rodents and birds as well if they're lucky.
Temperament: Docile toward anything that's larger than their typical prey. They rarely bite humans, and when they do the poison is mostly harmless. Just causing slight pain, irritation and swelling.
Abilities: They weave marvelous silken webs that are capable of being harvested. The yield of a singular mating pair will amount to one bolt of lunar silk per season if their webs aren't aggressively culled. One bolt a season is a good model for sustainability. They do not produce any silk during Saun, and produce four times the silk during the season of Cylus.
Weaknesses: They glow, and are easy to spot. Otherwise, as vulnerable as many other large spiders.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Pilotmice
Image
Developed by Kalortah
Price: Wild Animal, not for sale anywhere.
Habitat: Wherever wild predators tend to roam.
Lifespan and Development: They grow from infants to maturity within a season. They live out their lives first nursing from their mother for thirty trials, then move on to whatever predator the mother uses as a host.

Pilotmice live a parasitic lifestyle, and cannot live long away from their host, or they will die for lack of nutrients and essential enzymes they need to survive. Not to mention the protection of their host. They can not attach to any creature with a soul, so they are parasitic only to animals, not people.

Interestingly enough, they can survive away from their host, but they must enter a sort of torpor, that leaves them vulnerable. Usually they find a discrete burrow in which to hibernate before this torpor takes hold, only emerging when they sense the body heat of a nearby predator animal.
Diet: The blood of predator animals.
Temperament: Aggressively clingy.
Abilities: They are very swift on the foot, despite not being long-lived on their own. They can catch up to even the swiftest of predator animals, and once attached secrete an enzyme that renders the predator non-hostile toward them, or any other parasite that might attach itself to the creature.

Interestingly enough, the enyzme which they inject seems also to increase the animals sense of aggression toward anyone outside of the Pilotmouse colony. Generating a sort of maternal protective behavior, even male predator animals will react more violently and viciously to anyone who threats them or their colony of pilotmice.

Weaknesses: Once the predator they live off of is dispatched, the pilotmice will soon perish as well. They cannot feed on the dead, non-oxygenated blood is as poison to them. Their bones are sought after for ivory.

Veil Fish
Image
Developed by Darius Baer
Price: Tier 4
Habitat: Coastal salt water. In the Hollow Sea, primarily around the coast of Faldrass. Veil fish travel in large schools.
Lifespan and Development: The average lifespan of a veil fish is between 8 and 10 arcs, reaching sexual maturity after approximately 2 arcs. An average veil fish is approximately 18 inches in length.
Diet: The veil fish eats mostly insects and smaller fish.
Temperament: The veil fish is placid.
Abilities: The veil fish are able to conceal themselves by having their scales reflect the surrounding terrain. Only when they die do they revert to their normal colourings.
Weaknesses: Camouflage is their only defense, so if they are spotted, they are easily caught by predators. As such, it is harder to spot a veil fish than to catch it.

Capturing It
-- Due to its reflective camouflage, locating the veil fish is the most difficult part of capturing it. Once located, however, they are easily caught by anyone who chooses to go fishing, using either a rod and hook, or coastal nets.
Danger
-- The biggest danger when catching veil fish is getting the hook out of its mouth!
Tending It

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Grinder Bears
Image
Developed by Shl’drei
Price: Tier 9: Pelt

Habitat: Grinder Bears dwell in packs all over Ishallr and often times though they can be stumbled upon in caves, and are very known for disturbing expedition’s for this reason. They prefer cold climates and live mostly underground closer to their main food source. They don’t seem to exist outside of Ishallr.

Lifespan and Development: Grinder Bears live in small packs of four to ten and breed in doubles, they seemingly only have two cubs at maximum. Gestation is twice as long a regular bears, during the pregnancy the males of the pack take over the hunting and prioritize the females. The cubs stay near the mother, who then becomes doubly aggressive unless it’s another pack-mate and the cubs reach maturity. They are born roughly the size of an adult German Shepard and very fluffy. The cubs feed with the mother and remain small until around their tenth arc, where they begin to develop their teeth and claws and eat metals instead of small animals and their fur starts falls away in favor of a thick hide. Around 50 Arcs they reach adult size, weighing around six to seven hundred pounds of muscle and seven feet at shoulders and eight in total length. At fifty arcs the two cubs will fight, and the victor is allowed to leave the pack and start a new one. Unlike other bears, only females will hibernate- and only when pregnant.

Diet: Metals, Carnivorous

Temperament: These Ishallrian scourges aren’t the least bit docile. If they spot something or someone in their territory, they attack it without question. They’re hostile at best, fatal at worst. Because of their temperament and body make up, they can’t be used as mounts.

Abilities: Grinder Bears have very, very sharp and hardened teeth and claws. Largely known for their vocal ability, Grinder Bears can grind their teeth to produce sound, bot as an attack and defense. they will ground them to cause an ear splitting and very VERY painful sound. This is usually how they incapacitate their prey enough to catch. They’re scavengers in a way, and will use their larger than life claws to burrow deep underground where they dwell. They can cut/bite through the hardest of materials, and their raw power and size are both an advantage and a disadvantage. Their teeth where formed to eat metals and they have extremely hardened skin. Their skin is very hard much like their teeth and claws and very resistant thanks to their diet- it is there greatest defense. They have enormous stamina though.

Weaknesses: Because of their diet and makeup, Grinder Bears are very slow movers. At most they can get 5 miles per hour, and even that is a heavy order. Grinder Bears also have a slow digestive system and are deaf. Once they’re full, they can go at least an arc without food as long as they don’t move and sleep at most. Grinder Bears also hate heat, fire, anything hot- they’re very sensitive to it. They also cannot swim, if the land in the water they sink quickly and die due to their weight and the fact they do require oxygen. The don't develop their skin and keep their fur around their joints, which can be exploited if you can get close without the Grinder Bear vocalizing.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Glowing Chickens
Image
Developed by Devin
Price: Tier 7
Habitat: Glowing chicken are farm animals for the most part, just like their normal counterparts. You’d be hard-pressed to find one of them in the wilds, outside a farm or someone’s backyard or garden! Right now, they can only be found on Scalvoris as they are a very new kind of animal, but they may eventually find their way to other nations.
Lifespan and Development: Glowing Chickens evolved from normal chickens. The first of their kind appeared in Scalvoris, in Gunvorton to be exact, during the Rebirth Cycle of 721. According to rumours, something happened during that arc’s Sea of Light festival, but nothing has been proven so far. Glowing Chickens develop and hatch in twenty to twenty-one trials, just like normal chickens. Baby Glowing Chickens shed their down and develop actual feathers when they are between three and six seven-trials of age. Most glowing hens lay their first egg around eighteen weeks of age. When Glowing Chickens reach their full size depends on which breed of chicken they evolved from, but in most cases, it should happen in about an arc. The average glowing chicken will live between eight and ten arcs.
Diet: Glowing Chickens eat the same kind of food that normal chickens eat. They like to eat grasses, weeds and seat, but also earthworms, insects and all kinds of different slugs. They also need to eat sand or dirt though which they keep in their gizzards as it helps them grind up the wild foods that they forage. Some Glowing Chickens are also fed food scraps, although not as frequently as normal chickens due to how rare they are.
Temperament: The temperament of the Glowing Chickens depends on which breed of chicken they evolved from. Some breeds are calmer than others. So, you might get a Glowing Chicken whose ancestors were fighting chickens, or a very calm and docile chicken!
Abilities: Glowing Chickens have no special abilities. Their downs and their feathers as well as their eggs and the insides of their egg just glow, with a multitude of swirling colors. While a Glowing Chicken never fails to lay a glowing egg, only one in twelve chicks hatched from a glowing egg actually glows itself. The other chicks look totally normal!
Weaknesses: Glowing Chickens have all the weaknesses that you’d expect chickens to have. Unfortunately, glowing does not confer any special abilities. Glowing Chickens can’t breathe fire, they can’t fly, and they are not any more intelligent than the average chickens either!

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Sucklesoid
Image
Developed by Shl'drei
Price: T7 Queen

Habitat: Inside wood or plant stalk, the hives look more like a infestation. They huddle close together and melt the wood millimeter by millimeter. As they melt it down they use their cylindrical tails to suck up the liquid they melted down. Workers will fill up, and then the Queen will slurp the remaining melts.

Lifespan and Development: The average worker Sucklesoid can live roughly three or four arcs, depending on diet and food availability. The Queen Sucklesoid lives only one arc and her job is to keep producing larvae. Workers maintain the hive, scout for new food sources, etc. The Queen, despite her title, is not the leader of the hive. Once another female is born, that female will be sent off to find her own source and make a hive. Worker and Queen reach maturity roughly twenty five to thirty trials and the workers will always be larger than the Queen. Sucklesoids females are Asexual, and reproduce asexually once every five trials after maturity. She can have maybe ten or fifteen larvae per reproduction, and she will always lay after eating a hole through her hive (Be that wood or vegetation). Once the larvae have matured they be males will begin to fill out the hive and any females will be sent out to find their own again.

Diet: Herbivores, Prefer Wood

Temperament: Very docile. Even if you step into their hive they're more likely to flit away than to attack.

Abilities: Their tails, roughly three inches, hold a numbing agent that also works as an acid on wood. The acid has numbing effects if diluted properly. If not diluted it burns and itches causing rashes but it'll go away after a break or so.

Weaknesses: They're very small, about the size of a bee in body- maybe a bit larger. They are very weak and their only defense is the numbing stinger at the end of their tail. They ca be squashed, stepped on, etc and they have no actual defense against it.

Re: [Scalvoris] Fauna

Lightsippers
Image
Developed by SHL'DREI
Price: Unavailable

Habitat: Anywhere there's clear light, towns, sparsely wooded areas.

Lifespan and Development: Lightsippers only breed in direct sunlight. Or rather, they only birth. A pregnant Lightsipper will hold babies for a maxim of 5 breaks, at which time her body will either absorb the eggs back as extra sustenance or lay breed two or three larvae. These Larvae are born with all their features, they're just about the size of gnat but fully grown they're the size of a golf ball over the course of 5-7 breaks depending on how bright the place of birth is. Once born the mother will leave, find other mates and repeat the process as will the larvae when fully grown. They don't need food or water, it's unknown if they even need air so long as there is light. The only reason they aren't largely known is because no one has figured out or tried to catch them with the use of light. Lightsippers, save for their red underbelly, are black in color.

Diet: Light. Because of their genetic makeup, Lightsippers will need to be in constant light, which means they're uncommon during Cylus when all goes dark. That said, as long as their is a direct beam of light, they will continue to function- hence why people tend to turn lights off after they sleep in Scalvoris, especially near the more light populated areas.

Temperament: Very docile, and tame flies. They're just annoying with the constant buzz.

Abilities: None save for not needing food or water- they live so long as they have a light source touching them.

Weaknesses: They die after 1-2 breaks without light.
