The Viden Academy Fitness Centre was opened in the 607th arc. It was originally considered as a potential on-campus site for Menochoros practitioners as the martial art had gained a sizeable number of followers by the early 600s. However, there had been calls for a number of physical activities to be made available to Videnese students and a number of non-Academy affiliated citizens also indicated their interest. As a result, the Fitness Centre was designed and built to be used primarily by the students as it allowed them to keep their bodies in shape while they were expanding their minds.

While the centre is part of the Academy, it is open for everyone in Viden to use, which includes visitors to the city as well as residents who are non-students. Upon entry to the campus, the Centre can be found nestled off to the left, set apart from the rest of the buildings which are noticeably older. The Centre is a large building comprised of two storeys above ground, as well as a basement level as well. It is made up of a number of different rooms, which facilitate public training spaces and teaching spaces for small or large groups.

After passing through the double doors that mark entrance to the establishment, a visitor will pass into a small reception area. Here they will find a wooden desk with a variety of forms and a noticeboard on the wall, which advertises a variety of classes. All visitors will check in with the receptionist before going about their business to ensure that their payments are up to date and to make sure that they make use of the facilities that they want to use. Whether you're signing up for classes, practising or exercising alone, or seeking general information, it is necessary to go through the receptionist. For those seeking work, they'll be redirected to the Employment Contractor.

There are two doors leading out of the reception area, one on the left and one on the right, which lead to corridors on either sides of the building. These corridors provide access to stairs that head underground, stairs that head upstairs and a variety of rooms. The ground floor is largely dedicated to Unarmed Combat while the first floor is largely dedicated to Armed Combat.

There are washing facilities underground with attendants and food facilities upstairs with a variety of food and drink available and ample seating areas. There are a number of teaching spaces available, as well as sparring spaces and private session rooms. For those who aren't taking classes or engaging in specific activities, there is a gym on the ground floor and a number of fitness trainers are usually available, both male and female. Most of those who work here are human although there are also a number of Eídisi and a few Ellune.

Details: An excellent organiser and great conversationalist, Ashton is quite an accomplished young man to be working at a job that many would consider menial. He might be better employed as a someone's personal assistance but in truth, the Fitness Centre would fall apart without him as he ensures that the scheduled times for the use of different rooms never clashes and that people always end up where they're meant to be. Anyone watching him can see that he takes pleasure in the work and even when he isn't actively helping a visitor, he can be found scribbling away in a notebook or organising the notices on the noticeboard.

While he may seem like a harmless sort of character, in truth, Ashton watches a lot of comings and goings within the Fitness Centre and has ways of learning interesting tidbits about the individuals who pass inside. Unbeknown to many, he actually collects information on every single person who comes in and relays certain pieces of information to the Directorate that he garners from eavesdropping, careful probing in conversation and other methods. Needless to say, he has more than one reason for working in a seemingly menial occupation.

Details: Zoran is little bit of a smart arse with a sarcastic sense of humour and a tendency to joke with anybody that he comes in contact with, even when it isn't wholly appropriate. It's something of a mystery how he ended up working in the Fitness Centre, especially as an attendant but he doesn't seem too bothered by the job - at least outwardly. In reality, he finds it boring and somewhat menial work but it has its advantages. Zoran is actually gay, a fact that isn't known by many who encounter him. He's always quite respectful towards those who come in to wash and would never openly stare, but he wouldn't be above checking out the odd man while he's dealing with his belongings.

Details: While Akkarin has to deal with customers from time to time, he is mainly a man who works behind the scenes. He has a temper and will often snap at his staff, largely commanding through fear although he has a fair amount of leadership ability as well. He doesn't come across as being much of a people person (he isn't), and he'll be fairly quiet when he does have to deal with customers. Better to remain silent then to bite their heads off.

Details: Initially pursuing a Letter in Medicine at the behest of her parents, Ilani chose to travel after she finished it as she had a far greater interest in Linguistics. Before she went on her travels, the woman began studying Menochoros and has spent many arcs honing her skills in the martial art. Although aged and expected to step down as Great Teacher soon, Ilani is still fit, sharp-minded and eager to open the minds of others. Additionally, thanks to her knowledge of languages, she can converse with and teach those who may be new to Viden from places that don't use Common or those who may not be proficient in it.

Details: While seeking their Familiar, the Sev'ryn may travel quite far afield and that's precisely what happened to Lida'via. The city of Viden might seem quite a far cry from the warmer climes that can be found to the south but something about it seems to appeal to the woman. She has a great respect for what she views as quite spiritual philosophies behind Menochoros, which has led her to pick up some skill in it and decide to teach it. Furthermore, as someone quite used to meditation, she can see its benefits to the martial arts and finds herself eager to help those who seem to struggle to reach such a state of mind.

Details: Originally from Rynmere, he found Rynlism too stifling, especially after he was marked by Xiur. Viden allowed him to worship Xiur openly and remain close to home, and considering his interest in different combat styles, he was drawn to the place where Menochoros began. Although Arlen found that he preferred more physical combat styles, he was still content to remain in Viden, especially as there were openings in the city for people with his skill set. As such, he has found himself teaching others more martial styles that he felt the icy city lacked.

Arlen is shorter than the Eídisi within the city but he has a rugged confidence that shows that he shouldn't be underestimated because of his size.

Details: A member of the all-male, Cyneheard grew up in a manner that involved quite rigorous activity. Perhaps a little reserved and introspective compared to others of his race, he's still large enough to rival many Eídisi in height and many regard him as potentially hazardous to their health when they come across him.

It isn't wholly clear what brought him to Viden or what causes him to stay but if asked, Cyneheard will joke that he was attracted to the passion of the blue-skinned women, something that he seems to find extremely humorous

Details: Son of Lord Tyburn and Lady Silva Tariq (née Yalta), Wyllum is seen by some as an aristocratic brat who was born with more money than sense. He's extremely arrogant and seems to enjoy lording his sense of superiority over others. However, given that he's one day expected to take on the full weight of the Tariq name, he was encouraged to give something back to Videnese society; he chose to teach. Despite his rather difficult personality, Wyllum isn't a terrible teacher and when giving instruction, he can be quite charming as well as helpful. Known for a love of alcohol, he also seems to have a thing with his fellow Blades Instructor, Bella Tollan, which is at least partially competitive.

Details: A small and pretty redhead, many people are fooled at first glance into thinking that Bella Tollan isn't a threat. It's something that she's fully aware of and she enjoys toying with people's perception of her as weak. Often underestimated, she's quick and frequently manages to draw shrieks of fear from men far larger than her. While obviously excellent with a rapier, she likes to show that there's a much of a mental component to using a blade as actually physically wielding it. The woman has a particular interest of messing with the minds of others, including her students.

Details: Proud, dignified and not someone to be trifled with, Delenn bears fantastic strength, which is a must for the use of a short bow, a weapon that she's more than proficient with. Although she seems to have a preference for Viden, she's been known to travel to Rynmere to take part in mounted hunts for sport and will often help the hunters of Viden when it proves necessary as she is a hunter as well as an instructor. Although quite a direct woman prone to being blunt to others, especially her students, she does have a soft spot for those who seem talented with a short bow and can be seen being a little kinder to her favourites.

Details: Born to a Sev'ryn mother, Noran was initiated as a hunter at a young age and proved himself as having a fair aptitude for it, particularly when it came to shooting his prey. Although his mother always took excellent care of him and he loved her dearly, he found himself seeking a male role model as his own father was unknown to him. Incidentally, he left his original home of Scalvoris, travelling around Idalos as he found himself unable to settle. He found a kindred spirit in the figure of Jona Piqard and although there was only a decade between them in age, he vowed to follow the man wherever he went. They became hunting and travelling companions, eventually settling in Piqard's native city of Viden, taking up teaching positions to have something to do with their time when not hunting for the city's food or for sport.

Details: Not your typical Videnese citizen given his Biqaj blood, Jona is someone who stands out due to his height (6' 5") and difference in colouring from the typically tall Eídisi and Ellune. Furthermore, he has inherited the colour-changing eyes of the Biqaj from his father, which makes him a fascinating individual to those who encounter him as Biqaj are not a common sight in Viden. He spent a spell working with the Rangers, learning a great deal about tactics and how to hunt humans as well as animals. He worked as a bounty hunter for a few arcs, which brought him to places beyond the icy city, at which point he met Noran Quayle and found himself inexplicably linked to the younger man. He returned to Viden with Jona and took up teaching positions so that they had something to do when they weren't hunting for food or sport.

Classes and Employment

Classes

There are a variety of classes available in the Viden Academy Fitness Centre and information about them can usually be found on the noticeboard in reception. These classes run for a set number of sessions, usually spread out over a period of 30-50 trials. All classes are available at three levels: Beginner (Novice), Intermediate (Competent) and Advanced (Expert-Master). Beginner classes usually comprise 10 sessions, which take place once every 5 trials. Intermediate classes are comprised of 10 sessions, which take place once every 3 trials. Depending on demand, additional classes might be set up.

Advanced classes work a little differently, usually comprised of small student groups or one-on-one sessions, these are paid for on a session by session basis rather than as a set series of sessions.

Physiotherapy

Similar to class 'sessions', an individual with an injury or injuries that requires physical rehabilitation can undertake sessions here. Those who require such sessions can be referred by a medical professional from the Infirmary or they can come to the Fitness Centre of their own accord. Regardless of how they arrive here, all prospective candidates are assessed to determine if they require physiotherapy and if so, what sort and for what duration. After that, the patient will typically be assigned someone who will see to their treatment for the duration of their rehabilitation.

The space is quite open although privacy screens can be assembled for those who do not want to be observed while undergoing treatment. The area has a combination of matting and furs spread across its floors so that any slips will not cause further problems. There is a wide array of equipment including various bars, walking frames and weights. There is also a small pool area for hydrotherapy.

While there are a number of qualified physiotherapists, there are also students and attendants who can aid patients who need additional support.

Those who are connected to the Academy do not have to pay a membership fee in order to make use of the Fitness Centre's facilities, although if they want to participate in certain activities and classes, they must pay a fee. All others must pay a flat membership fee per season to be permitted access to the facilities and must pay additional fees for classes.
