Castles Saved By Sand
Arc 720, 46th of Ashan
The scraping of sand sounded like music to Darius' ears. It was a familiar scratching that he'd heard many times before, and it usually had a sense of homecoming to it, for such a noise would reach his ears every time the wooden form of the Lady Jean slid up onto the beach. He would also hear it whenever he was scrubbing the hull of his rowboat clean, and though he had always been trying to get rid of the sand on those occasions, he was now doing his best to collect it.

His shovel bit into the sand, the cutting edge aided by the force of his boot as he put his weight into the effort. The green granules gave way, and as he pulled the shovel back, he was able to scoop several handfuls' worth of them and dump them into a sack.

Darius put his shovel down and reached for his waterflask, taking a gulp of the drink before looking across to see what the other three in the group were doing. There was no way he could have undertaken this task on his own, and so when Trudi had offered her services - and the equipment and manpower that came with it - the blond seafarer had not hesitated to accept.

Darius had been waiting in his rowboat at the Scalvoris Town Docks when Trudi had arrived with two male companions. The flirtatious waitress had made a cheeky quip about his boat - "Darius, not every woman thinks size matters" - but the others had mostly kept to themselves before the sailor landed them at a beach to the east of the city where they could gather the cold sand that Faith had requested. He would later find out that the two men were named Bruno and Jerome, and, like their coquettish companion, they were members of Isonomia. They were strong individuals, too, with broad shoulders and an impressive work ethic.

Courtesy of Faith's endorsement, Darius had assumed the leadership role, and the four of them had been shoveling Scalvoris Green Sand for a break or so when he had stopped for his drink.

"Thirsty work," came a familiar feminine voice, and the bearded human offered his waterflask to Trudi.

As she drank, a bead of liquid running down her chin, Darius turned to watch Bruno and Jerome. The two workhorses were taking turns to shovel sand into a sack, and the blond seafarer could have sworn they had not slowed since they'd started.

"Looks like they've got things under control," Darius observed quietly, before looking across the Hollow Sea at Faldrass Island.

He stepped across the cool sand to where the two men were working, and they stopped to look at him as he approached.

"We need to go there next," he announced, pointing at the volcano across the water. "You two keep working here, and Trudi and I will get sand from Faldrass."

The two men nodded, then got straight back to work.

"Ooh, handsome," Trudi cooed, her voice sending a tingle down Darius' spine, "I do love a man who takes control!"

There was no hiding Darius' awkwardness as he watched Trudi straddle the gunwale of the rowboat, before climbing in and finding a place to sit upon the stern thwart. She leant back in her seat, resting her elbows on the edge of the stern behind her and faced the blond as he placed his hands on the stern, digging his bare feet into the green sand. With a heave, he was able to find purchase, his arms straining as the beach gradually released its grasp on the Lady Jean, and the vessel was soon afloat.

The sailor followed, the water swirling around his calves until he hauled himself aboard and sat on the bow thwart, opposite his passenger. The oars clattered noisily against the rowlocks as he lifted the handles and dipped the blades into the water. He pulled back on one a few times, letting the boat rotate in the shallows until he had his back towards Faldrass, their intended destination.

The pair had opted for the narrowest stretch of water between the two islands, but it would be a tiring workout to get there - even more so when they returned, burdened by the weight of sacks of sand.

"Well," Trudi teased, "I can't say I've ever been taken out on a boat for a first date."

She caught Darius' eye and he blushed, which only caused the brunette to giggle.

"Oh, don't be so serious," she teased, leaning forward to pat one of his knees, "I know this isn't a date."

Darius nodded silently, but tried to not say anything. It would be much better for him to use his energy to get them safely across the Hollow Sea than to engage in a battle of wits that he was certain he couldn't win.

Instead, he dipped both oar blades into the water and leaned back, pulling them away from the shore.

"Strong, silent type, eh?" Trudi teased him gently.

"Something like that," he managed, and the exchange caused them both to share an awkward chuckle.

"Relax, Darius," Trudi smirked. "I'm mostly harmless."

The seafarer cocked an eyebrow at the woman's self-assessment.

"'Mostly'?" he echoed.

"I'm all bark and no bite," she added. "I flirt because the old men who eat at Cally's like to think they've still got it. I stroke their ego and they pay a few extra nels for the pleasure."

Darius nodded again, and there was silence for a few moments, aside from the water that lapped against the hull and the drops of water that escaped each stroke of the blades and returned to the sea.

"I'm here to help," she added. "I'm not just a pretty face. I pull my weight. You just have to be able to see beyond the smoke and mirrors."

"Aye," Darius nodded in genuine acceptance, and this time he felt no blush in his cheeks.

And with that, the pair were able to travel in a much more comfortable silence.

The Lady Jean slid to a gentle stop as the sand took hold of her hull, the weight of her occupants enough to keep her in place for the time being.

Trudi rose from her seat stepped up the middle of the boat until she was almost standing over Darius. With empty sacks in one hand, she held out the other, and the seafarer took hold of it, enabling the brunette to step over the side and onto the beach without losing her balance.

"Such a gentleman," she quipped as she stepped onto the shore, before letting out an exclamation of delighted surprise. "They weren't kidding when they said Faldrass sand is warm!"

Darius soon found himself in agreement. As he stepped out of the rowboat and began to haul it up the beach and away from the water, the orange Faldrass sands pressed against his soles and squeezed between his toes, the heat of the granules feeling like an unexpected greeting.

"Have you been to Faldrass before?" he asked the waitress.

"No. You?"

Darius shook his head.

The pair set to work, the seafarer using a shovel to bite into the sand, scooping up the orange granules and dumping them into the sacks which Trudi held open. The brunette held her own, though, gifting the seafarer with a break when they swapped positions.

Eventually, both bore a sheen of sweat, and the sacks were full. Trudi and Darius worked together to carry the newly acquired supplies back to the rowboat, lowering them carefully and evenly, so that the weight was as evenly distributed as possible.

Quite uncharacteristically for them both, the awkward seafarer and the flirtatious waitress shared a celebratory high-five, and the shovel soon joined the sand in the Lady Jean.

"Alright, handsome," Trudi spoke between gulps from her waterskin. "Let's see how Bruno and Jerome are getting on."

The return journey to Scalvoris was much harder than the one they had ventured on from it. Not only was the boat weighed down with the added cargo, but Darius was also fatigued from the labour he'd already endured.

It meant that by the time they returned to Jerome and Bruno, and he and Trudi had dragged the bow of the boat out of the water, his arm and shoulder muscles felt as though they were on fire. He attempted to haul one of the sacks of green sand that Jerome and Bruno had filled, but he quickly abandoned those efforts and let the two men load them into the boat.

And then the four of them set off once more, the rowboat gradually taking them back to the Scalvoris Town Docks, and Darius could only hope that they had enough sand to satisfy the short term needs of those besieged at Storm's Edge.

Comments: I like how you played Trudi here. It's interesting that she admits to being a flirt with all bark and no bite, but I suppose she thinks she has nothing to gain by working Darius over. Still, it was a nice moment of sincerity from the normally flirtatious Trudi.

That green sand will surely come in handy in Storm's Edge, and probably also would've helped Faldrass. I wonder what the cooling properties will do to the nickles of Storm's Edge.

Darius was a joy to read about as ever, acting very stoic toward Trudi, and being very earnest about his work. I'm glad that he and Trudi came to work well together in the end.

Great writing and enjoy the stuff!
