The land person who spoke, Rengar, was not intimidated by her~ that was good. It was good, too, that he was not hostile. The other land people, though they did not speak~ were not hostile, too. When Rengar spoke, Areia breathed out a long breath~ it was good that he was biqaj, that he was able to speak to her. Her big white body ~which had been wary, despite its softness~ became less wary. Areia let the wariness go with her breath, when the biqaj Rengar spoke.
"I am Areia~ I am mer," Areia said, when the biqaj Rengar wondered what she was~ if she was a mer.
What was going on with her ~what had gone on in the deep woods~ was not so simple to say, because Areia didn't know what had gone on, or what was going on there. But she said, "I was in the woods." She didn't know what woods she had been in; she didn't know where she'd been, or where she was. But~ "In the woods, I met the Merl bug~ the little faery," Areia said.
What had gone on with the Merl bug and the other little faeries was weird and bewildering to her, but Areia spoke of it because the biqaj Rengar wondered about it. But, it was obvious that she didn't know half of what had gone down.
"The Merl bug brought me deep in the woods. There were other little faeries there, and other people brought by the little faeries~ though no other mer. There, in the deep woods, was the Blackberry~ the little faeries' Blackberry. The Blackberry spoke. It was dying and it said it needed the new Blackberry. We were to pick the new Blackberry. Then it said we needed to devour some~ berries."
"But when we devoured the berries~" she said, "~they transformed our bodies!" The moment when it had gone down was the moment when she had known that the little faeries were deceivers.
"They were deceivers!" Areia said indignantly. "They brought us deep in the woods, they gave us berries to devour~ and I devoured them because I honored them! We were there on their honor! But devouring the berries transformed our bodies! The one of the others, his insides were going out! The other one, the land-plant-like one, it became blue! The one got old, so old he would die! I was transformed into this body, big and white and~ and soft!"
Soft!
"I decided I would devour the little faeries because they were deceivers. But I didn't get to devour them. In the moment there was a lot of~" She didn't know what had been going on. "~things going on. I bit the little blue faery, or it bit me, or~ I don't know. There were other things going on, too. Then there was the big voice that spoke out of the Blackberry, the voice of the ground, that stopped the biting. The voice of the ground brought me out of the deep woods, out of the deceivers' woods. It was then that I was here."
When the biqaj Rengar spoke of water, "You are a long way from water," Areia's big white body was wary, though she was not wary of the biqaj Rengar or of the others. She was wary of being so distant from the water.
"I do not know where the water is, now that I am not in the deceivers' woods," Areia said. The land was bewildering to Areia, who had not yet learned the lands' ways. It was not like the water; the limitations of land-walking bewildered her. "Do you know the direction of the water?" she inquired. "Being mer, I will need to walk to the water if I am to live."
But, before she went to the water, she had important words to impart. "If you go in the deep woods," Areia said, "Be wary of the little faeries."

Notes~ I'm okay with stopping. Areia is not hostile to the others. If you would like to go on because of something Rengar or one of the others would do, I'm ok with going on. But if not, if you'd like to stop, I'm ok with it too.
