Vhalar 120, Arc 721
It was getting colder and colder, and soon, most outdoor activities would be a thing of the past, and the number of ships that would travel to the smaller islands would decrease greatly. On Faldrass, it wasn’t quite as cold as it was in the rest of Scalvoris – Devin didn’t know if it was due to the large amounts of orange sand, or if some other sort of natural phenomenon was responsible – but even here, the young man could feel it.
This would likely be one of the last times when he would practice in the garden since he was not a masochist and didn’t want to catch a cold either. He’d had (a moderate case of) the flu once; it was an experience that he didn’t want to repeat. He had felt miserable and unattractive.
Armed with Mistress Alina’s guide to sword fighting and his wooden practice bastard sword, he walked past trees and flowerbeds until he had reached the spot where he had set up his training dummy a little earlier. It was a perfect spot in his opinion. He was pretty sure that the people that were in the Green Room could see him very well from there, and he wanted to be seen. He had gotten better at fighting with two-handed swords.
It was time to show off a little, at least to accidental spectators!
(He had come to the conclusion that he still needed to practice a little more before he showed off to an actual audience!)
Since he couldn’t warm up with a book and a sword in his hands, he placed both on a wooden bench where people sat and enjoyed the garden when the weather was nicer, and then the young man who was dressed in sufficiently warm clothes, including a Cavani’s Cloak, began to do various stretches. Warming up, he had learned over the course of time, didn’t only make you more flexible; it also helped prevent injuries, and he didn’t want to injure himself.
Injuries were ugly and unpleasant, just like the flu!
Since someone might look out of the window, he made sure to make a real effort. Once he was done, he leafed through Mistress Alina’s guide until he had reached the chapter that dealt with various attacks and made sure to read it thoroughly. From his time as a teacher at the university (He had had to teach classes in order to get his Charter.) he knew that you could learn something the wrong way, and that it could be hard to fix things in that case.
He wanted to prevent that!
He already knew what you had to do with your hands when you used a two-handed sword, so, he placed his dominant hand near the guard and the thumb of that hand near the flat of the blade, and then he was finally ready to go. He had already practiced thrusts before, but he moved his sword forward in a straight line towards his training dummy that he had named “Florence”, because that had been the first name that had come to his mind, anyway. He wanted to make sure that he never forgot how to execute a thrust with a two-handed sword again.
Regularly practicing everything was important!
