Settlement Name: Haven
Settlement Location: Faldrass
Statistics
Wealth: +111 WP
- Tax: 0%
Population: 52
- Military: 6
Order: 90%
- Demographic:
Industry: Effects:
  • Faldrass' Favour: The Induk of Faldrass favours this settlement. Crops planted in this settlement will grow large and healthy, well-fed by the rich nutrients from the volcanic soil that never seem to run out.
  • New Leader: For the Hot Cycle 721, the settlers of Haven see that Elisabeth is working in her new role. Since she has already earned their trust, they work cohesively together and help her where they can. This also means that you have a one-time opportunity to change the Survival and Growth skills for Haven. If you choose to do that, then it will need discussion with me and to be evident in threads for the settlement. It doesn't need it's own threads, per se, but I'd like to see evidence of a shift happening.
  • Connections Elisabeth has somehow managed to have the settlement moved by Saoire. This is seen as a very positive thing and she will find the settlers more willing to come to her with issues and concerns. This is a double-edged sword!
  • Military Training: Haven's military NPCs possess 15xp in Strength, 5xp in Combat: Unarmed and 15xp in a random combat skill.
  • Hub of Science: Haven will gain +1 population for every primary resource it gathers that is a unique development to Faldrass. This population change reflects a new scholar joining the research station to study the resource.
  • Taskmaster: When Balthazar is using his taskmaster capstone ability in a thread, the task the settlers are currently working on can be completed as if they are one skill level higher than they really are in the skill most relevant to the task. This effect cannot be stacked with other effects that increase the skill levels of PCS or NPCs.
  • Debt to Ria: Haven owes a considerable debt of gratitude to Ria of Haven Farm. When she calls this favour in Haven had better repay it, or else lose the trust of anyone else they ask for help in the future.
  • Haven Chapel Haven has a small canopy-style gazebo of trees. They are always blooming, no matter what the season and those who sit beneath them will experience the sort of calm one feels from a jubiplant. Residents of Haven leave small glass gifts and in the center, hanging from the apex of the roof, is a glass wind chime. The sounds which this make are gentle and soothing and simply beautiful.
  • Cultural Quirk: Community Spirit Those who live in Haven will experience less conflict among themselves and will experience a sense of calm and serenity as individuals. It's like the effect that people get when being in the gazebo seeps into the residents, who are just more chilled out and xen-like. Conflict (even small conflict) reduces significantly.
  • Cultural Quirk: Community Focus Most of the residents of Haven will enjoy spending a few moments in the gazebo each day. When there is something to discuss or some important decision to be made, the gazebo becomes the place where residents of Haven congregate in order to ensure the best outcome.
  • The Reputation Reverberation - Logistics is the backbone of any operation and a settlement is no exception. Elisabeth has honed her abilities in this skills in this area to the point of appearing supernatural and Haven, having been under her hands-on leadership for an arc and a half, just works better. It just does. Anyone that visits the settlement will notice that the day-to-day business of the settlement is beyond efficient. Haven, thus, gains a reputation in Scalvoris as a settlement that people might wish to do business with (ie: "Those people know how to get things done!") This effect is not meant to dramatically alter a pc or npc's opinion of Haven, but could be construed as allowing others to view them slightly more favorably (if they are inclined in a negative fashion), getting more of their foot in the door to take advantage of certain opportunities. Opportunities will manifest without the settlement necessarily looking for them.
  • Immortals' Embrace Gazebo: Haven has a small canopy-style gazebo of trees. They are always blooming, no matter what the season and those who sit beneath them will experience the sort of calm one feels from a jubiplant. Over time, people will continue to leave small glass gifts and, in the center, hanging from the apex of the roof is a glass wind chime. The sounds which this make are gentle and soothing and simply beautiful.

Re: Haven

Challenge!

Your settlers arrive at their intended site near serenity gardens, only to find that without the trees where the Badland's now stand nothing is stopping the cold sea breeze from washing across the area. Perhaps in Saun it would be managable, but in the unending night of Cylus the lingering chill of winter is easily felt. The tents simply aren't thick enough to keep the cold wind out, and every couple of days or so a strong squall comes out of nowhere which collapses the flimsy structures. Within the first three days shivers and runny noses plague Haven. If stronger, warmer shelter isn't constructed soon the weaker settlers will soon begin to die.

Re: Haven

Issue (cont'd)

Balthazar is held in custody until 10th Ashan - then he has his trial

Timeframe
He leaves the settlement on the 4th Cylus. He does not return to the settlement before he gets arrested in Almund on the 10th.
After the 10th he's in custody until at least the 10th Ashan.
In the 30 days between 10th Cylus and 10th Ashan a number of Elements will come to question people in the Settlement about Balthazar and his movements. His tent and belongings will be searched. They will question whether anyone has heard of / knows anything of slaves being bought for here, etc. They come for the first time on the 12th Cylus, and come 3 more times during the time up to the 10th Ashan.

Re: Haven

In light of imprisonment, here are the things Balth did before setting off to Almund.

Thread(s): Somewhere Only We Know
For Whom The Wind Blows
I See Chains
Participants: Balthazar
Brief description of thread: Overview - By the end of these three threads I think the first task is more or less dealt with. Balthazar puts up something to stop the wind and uses two different methods (the naturally warm sand and gathered firewood) to try and keep settlers warm.
Somewhere Only We Know - The group arrives, sets up their tents, and discover that they are cold. The temporary solution is to dig pits for them in the warm Faldrass sand and plans are made to build better houses and get yellow dragon wood to make pyres that will keep people warm.
For Whom The Wind Blows - Set a little bit before Balthazar leaves in I See Chains, the mage anchors the tents, orders settlers to gather firewood, and attempts to construct some windbreaks using the elements to help the tents resist the wind.
I See Chains - Balthazar and a small group of settlers leave to get more supplies to build, the settlers who stay behind begin using the wood they have to construct as sturdy buildings as they can while they wait for more supplies to come.

Accepted. As a result of this thread, Haven has gained:
  • +3% Order. For solving the wind chill problem.
Tip: Wind power could become an advantage to your settlement if harnessed correctly.

Re: Haven

Challenge!

Rumours have been spreading like wildfire around Haven. Regardless of what the truth is, the recent questioning by the Element Troops has given rise to rumours that Balthazar has been involved in slave trading, and intended to use Haven as his base of operations to do so. Unless something is done to assure the settlers it is likely that public opinion will turn against him.

Re: Haven

Thread(s): I'm Not Into Chains
Participants: Balthazar Black
Brief description of thread: A trial or so after returning to the island, Balthazar gives a speech to address the rumors that he is interested and pursuing slave trading while also delivering a message to his people about the Albarech and Elements.
 ! Message from: Trouble
Accepted. As a result of this thread, Haven has gained:
  • +1% Order. While the settlers still remember the rumors, Balthazar's explaination has assuaged their worries. As a curious side effect, by pointing out how the Element soldiers escorting him are the ones responsible for keeping his very useful magic sealed away, Balthazar has provided his settlers with a common target for their dislike. The settlers come together to show a united front in their dislike of the element troops escoerting Balthazar, leading to an increase in public order.
  • Effect: Mainland Friction: The people of Haven are not best pleased with the Scalvoris government. They are reluctant to accept help from the mainland, or to provide help to them in turn. Actions where Haven settlers prove themselves to be better than mainland Scalvorans, such as by beating them in competitions or solving problems they cannot, will result in increases in order. Actions where Haven accepts help from the Elements or the Scalvoris government will result in a decrease in order.
Tip: Haven is currently a vassal settlement to Scalvoris, meaning that it can request their assistance in exchange for following their rules. With enough order and effort however this could be changed...

Re: Haven

Challenge!

One morning Balthazar awakens to the sound of a commotion outside. Two of his settlers are in the midst of a feirce arguement: the first claiming that the second has stolen a family heirloom from them, and the second denying it. Apparently the first settler's parents bought the heirloom from second's for an unfairly low price during a time when they were desperate for money, and the second's family have wanted in back for decades. The heirloom in question is a bronze bust of Liathen Almund, one of the old pirate lords nicknamed "The Guardian," and is rumoured to protect the household that owns it from certain forms of danger.

Re: Haven

Summary of Timeline & Events During Balthazar's Incarceration.

3rd: Cylus:
  • Balthazar takes on the settlement.

4th Cylus:
  • Balthazar leaves the settlement. (I have modnoted this)

5th Cylus:
  • Balthazar stops in Port Diablo, drops off some settlers (I believe?)

10th Cylus:
12th Cylus:
  • Four Flame Troops arrive at the settlement. They know - at that point - only what Jacien has been told in Mutually Assured Destruction"I've been asked to help build a new settlement on Faldrass," ," I represent a group of refugees who need decent workers and materials to build houses on the island. "
  • They arrive with "Basic Supplies" for a group of 20 Based on: ""I have taken it upon myself to help a few families displaced in the eruption of Faldrass resettle on the island. The shift in the landscape has had some unexpected consequences, primarily being that it is cold and windy. The tents we brought over aren't sturdy enough against the wind and the warm sand isn't cutting it against the cold." "I'm looking for a workforce large enough to start building wooden houses for my settlers. I'm no builder myself so I'm not sure what that entails. Fifteen? Twenty workers?"
  • This includes wood and stuff for building windbreaks. It also includes food.
  • They spend 3 days there investigating (including searching his tent and belongings as previously stated, and help when they are not (Based on: "Third, you settlement is doin' fine so far. We made sure they were fed and sent them some buildin' materials we had ready so they can try and get some construction done. I would advise you remember that the Scalvoris government can help provide supplies so you aren't havin' to pay for everythin' out of yoru own personal pockets." she said, her voice calm, though there was something to her voice that made it sound as if she was talking to a teenager." - Kura, in his trial. All the other quotes are Balth).
18th Cylus:
  • The Flame Troops return with food and more supplies and lumber - this will ensure that everyone is fed and warm until Balthazar returns. They ask follow up questions. They also make sure that whoever is in command at that point is aware of where they can get information.
  • They stay for 2 days
There is a clear direction in their questioning and that is trying to find out if Balthazar has any links to slavery. When Balth returns, 2 of the 3 troops who are on "Balth-duty" are from the group of four.

25th Cylus:
  • The Flame Troops return with food and top up supplies. They keep on asking questions
  • They stay for 2 days
2nd Ashan:
  • The Flame Troops return with food and top up supplies. They keep on asking questions
  • They stay for 2 days
11th Ashan: Balth and Elisabeth return.

I think that's everything. Please forgive me if not. Happy to answer questions!
 ! Message from: Trouble
Accepted. As a result of this thread, Haven has gained:
  • +3 Population (the element troops assigned to shadow Balthazar. They will leave once his cuffs are removed.)
  • +3 Military (same soldiers again. They will assist the settlement, but don't follow direct orders.)
In addition, due to the supplies brought over by the troops, there are no concerns over food issues for the duration of the time Balthazar was away. A regular source of food will still be needed before the end of the season however.
As these events took place before Balthazar's speech, the effects of "Mainland Friction" do not take effect, and so there is no order penalty for recieving the supplies.
The "Mainland Friction" effect has been replaced with the "Civil Friction" effect.

Notice
On the night of the 12th of Ashan, when Balthazar falls asleep he has a strange dream. In his dream he is standing in a what looks to be a huge forest of ashen grey trees. It is ancient and muggy, with the ground covered with wet, rotting leaves. All around him there are statues: each one unique, but all of people dressed in fine clothes or armours from every corner of the world reaching towards the centre of the forest; the only place illumtinated by a single ray of moonlight peircing through a hole in the canopy above.

In the centre of the forest sits a throne carved from a large tree stump: simple in design, but carved with symbols he does not recognise. It is crude and ugly, but there is a feeling of weight to their air around it. The specks of dust Balthazar can see in the ray of light are frozen in midair, as if time itself has been halted by the presence of the throne. Though he only dreams of this scene for a moment, when he wakes up the day he can remember the image with perfect clarity.

Brief description of thread: The Seafood Ex'clam'ation (Elisabeth) - Elisabeth discovers ingis clams on the shore near Haven and brings some back to the settlement.

Accepted. As a result of this thread, Haven has gained:
  • Ignis Clams as a primary resource.
  • Ignis Shells as a primary resource.
I did not include Fire Pearls, as these were described as being an incredibly rare find.

Tip: You can gain wealth from harvesting the Ignis Clams resource by building new areas or equipment to make gathering these clams more efficient for your settlers.
