Order from Chaos : Foundations

Ashan 51 Trial, 719

Gennadiya tapped her quill against the table as she reviewed her notes from some of the patients she had helped with recently. She had learned that sometimes it was a good idea to look at something after the original diganosis or even first visit. Colds and such were easy but other times there might be something else that was more long term.

She looked at a group of names who all had very similar symptoms, and all of them started and ended within a trial of each other. Gennadiya was wondering if there was something in the air these people did like during those trials. Then the important question was there something she coukd do to stop it.

It was then that she looked up at the water cloak and realized it was time for her appointment with Faith. The head of the Order had been bouncing around between cities working to get the education system of the Order set up. Gennadiya had some of her own assigments to work on in that time but nothing as large as the university plans. She folded up her notes and cleaned up her ink and quill. It only took a couple minutes and then she found herself walking towards the offices.

Gennadiya had allowed her hair to cascade freely down her back. She so often had it in braids that it was hard to saw if the waveness of the hair was natural or aside effect. Gennadiya walked with a graceful pace down the hall. She moved purposefully but didn't rush as she passed her fellow healers. The young woman didn't think about it but she was taller then many of the other women, and on pare with a number of the men in height. She always walked with her back stright and her head held up. She was dignified but she also always had a smile on her lips and a friendly twinkle in her eyes.

She soon found herself outside of Faiths office and knocked waited to see if she was invited in.

"Come in!" Faith called, lifting her head from the architectural plans which were on the large table in her office. She had studied them intensely and she knew that things were progressing. It was exciting, and more than a little bit terrifying. But it was also a lot of work and, as one thing finished it brought about three other things which needed to be done. But, things being equal, the Institute of Innovation should open in Saun. There was much still to be done but, now at least, it was looking entirely likely that it would happen. She had asked Gennadiya to come to her office and so, it was the platinum-haired healer that Faith was hoping to see and, true enough, it was her who came in. Faith's silver eyes showed her pleasure as she smiled in greeting. "Gennadiya. Thank you so much for coming. I know how busy everyone is."

There was no doubting it, everyone was busy. It had been - and continued to be, a totally manic Cycle with all sorts of things happening. Faith always had her bodyguard, Alissa, with her but these days there was more of a Lightning Knight presence, too. She didn't like it, but she also didn't argue with it. Because things outside of the Order were in all sorts of chaos for Faith. Still, she was here to serve the people of Rharne, the people of Idalos and she was three times damned if some megalomaniac Lich was going to be stopping her from doing that.

So, she gestured down to the plans which were rolled out on the desk. "The Institute of Innovation, Rharne. In conjunction with Viden Academy and with the support of the Scalvoris Campus of the same." She smiled at Gennadiya with delight evident. "Due to open Saun, 719. It will provide Higher Education, and be linked with the Lightning Cathedral, the Order of the Adunih and Isonomia. We'll start interviewing for staff next cycle, at which time I should have finished my Licentiate, all things being equal." So long as no one had killed her, she supposed, but Faith chose not to say that. "So we will be able to teach all the levels. There are Innovation laboratories, the focus will be on a multi-disciplinary approach to education and medicine." She smiled at Gennadiya and breathed out, pausing to let the young woman ask any questions she had and so on. When she was sure that they were on the same page, so to speak, she continued.

"But there's another thing, which I wanted to ask you about." Rolling up the plans, underneath them were another set. Far less detailed and smaller, but Faith slid them over. "These are the diagrams of two currently abandoned buildings, next to each other. One would make an excellent orphanage. The other, a good sized clinic." Stepping back and letting Gennadiya look at it, Faith raised an eyebrow. "But we'll need someone to run this project, start to finish, to see it open and to oversee it." Waiting, just for a moment, she then asked. "I believe you have an interest in developing family clinics? Would you be interested?"

It was a lot, Faith knew. And Gennadiya was still early on in her career but then, Faith considered with a smile, so was she.

Re: Order from Chaos : Foundations

Gennadiya entered once she heard the call. She wasn’t surprised to find Faith with a desk full of paperwork. She was pleased to see that it appeared to be different paper work then some of her previous visits. Gennadiya had always though she kept busy but Faith just amazed her with her tireless work and projects. On top of this Gennadiya reminded herself they were also keeping working towards hunting down a power hungry Necromancer.

Gennadiya smiled back at Faith as the other woman greeted her. The green robes expression showed she was pleased to be there and she said it as well. “It is good be here and to take the chances to get away. Breaking the routine and doing something different was something I felt Ymiden has been prompting me to do this cycle, so please never hesitate to interrupt.”

Faith understood the platinum haried woman she was talking to and didn’t waste time on space filling pleasentries. Instead she jumped, eagerly, into the reason for her request. With the gesture from Faith, Gennadiya walked over to the desk and began to look through the plans. She wasn’t an architect so it took her a moment to vaguely idea what was being presented on the drawings. It wasn’t helping her that she was also listening to Faith as she spoke. Viden, and Scalvoris has booth approved this Institution which was excellent news.

“Maybe once this gets set up I can work on getting some of these certificates myself.” Gennadiya said half to herself and half to the world then she returned to the present. “This is excellent. We can not only help so many of the healers to get more advanced training in any field, but imagine how this could help the dust quarter. Obviously not the teachers, but we can find employees who will make it run from the dust quarter, opening more jobs and possible providing on the job training for fields they haven’t been exposed to before.” Gennadiya said her eyes dancing.

“Before this cycle I hadn’t realized how important the cross disciplines. The magnifier we used is a great example of how that will help.” She paused “Will the labs be open to just students and teachers, or are we going to open it to the public, or at least some of the labs? That way someone how might have the training the need could have someone where to come and bounce ideas off of others and possible test something they might not be able to do anywhere else.”

Gennadiya looked back at the plans as they were being rolled up and Faith moved the conversation on. There was another set of plans, these were slightly easier to read, as they were a reflection of an existing building and not the paper embodiment of a dream, with all its little notes. Gennadiya looked it over and listened as Faith explained her plan for the buildings. An Orphanage and a clinic. The Orphanage made sense but the clinic puzzled her for a moment, until the dark haired woman explained it was a family clinic. Gennadiya’s head snapped to look at her friend as the offer to run a family clinic was made. Her blue eyes were wide in surprised and then as she pushed a stranded of hair away from her face and then the surprise was replaced by pleasure.

“I would love head up this project. I think a family clinic would help the children feel more comfortable. Sometimes when they come to the main clinic they can become panicked with the condition of some of the adult patients.” She looked at the plans, “We could set up a wing for woman having babies.” She drifted off and looked at the other plans. “There are plenty of rooms in this one so that the orphans could have rooms for sleeping, but also class rooms. We will have to set up a kitchen.”

Gennadiya pulled herself out of the planning dream and focused again. “Sorry I was about to start with my list. Can you tell me where there buildings are located specifically in the city, and what they were used for before?” Gennadiya paused hesitating. “I haven’t heard of an orphanage in the city, so are we providing a place for orphans to come, or is there some rundown orphanage that needs saving?”

"I hope you do," Faith said, as Gennadiya spoke of undertaking qualifications. "With the new curriculum, learning will be part of gaining trims and claiming specialisms. Attending those lessons might as well be counting towards a qualification. The combination of theory and practice is something I'm very grateful to have been able to partake of." Faith was entirely serious. She had learned a lot from the lectures she had attended at Scalvoris campus. In truth, though, she would have to admit that she had learned more from teaching medicine than she had from learning it ~ but that was because she had to know it inside out in order to be able to answer all the questions. To not simply describe what, but to explain why was key. She raised an eyebrow at Gennadiya's assessment of how it would help the Dust Quarter, though. "Maybe, teachers too. Outside the box thinking, but qualified people can be poor, too." Keeping that in mind, Faith very much wanted to make sure that this Institute was a source of education, and economic growth for the Dust Quarter and all of Rharne. There were many people who could benefit others and reap benefit from this place. She didn't doubt it.

Faith nodded when Gennadiya spoke of the need to cross disciplines. "I agree. It wasn't until my husband and I worked together that I truly began to appreciate it." Faith had developed a very genuine passion for pushing boundaries, for looking at things differently. From the demographics which she had introduced as a subject in Scalvoris to things like the magnifier and the raft. When Gennadiya asked about opening up the labs, though, Faith shook her head. "No, we can't realistically do that. The cost of equipment and materials would be prohibitive. It would also, more importantly, be an accident waiting to happen. We need to make sure that safety is foremost in our minds, always. Unsupervised free use of hazardous materials is not happening." Faith grinned. "I've had more than enough trouble with first-arc students to think that letting Joe Public loose in a chemistry lab is going to end well." It was that combination in action, she supposed. Theory and experience. Testing things for the uneducated, unsupervised and unwary was not something Faith was going to sign off on. "But maybe some free taster sessions, that might be good."

The next order of business, though, was one which Gennadiya responded to as happily as Faith had hoped she would. "I'm so pleased." Faith had very much hoped that the platinum-haired healer might feel that way. She would be good at it, Faith was sure, and she wanted to make sure that there were dynamic and creative people spearheading things. She nodded at the questions. "Both in the Earth Quarter, and I think it used to be an orphanage a long time ago. Having given birth here, I can tell you that a dedicated wing or area for pregnancy and birth is an excellent idea." As for classrooms, she said, she wasn't quite so sure. There was the risk, after all, of the children being isolated. Maybe, Faith suggested, Isonomia ~ the charity which she ran ~ could work with the Council to maybe provide classes for young people in the Dust and Earth Quarter, allowing the children from the orphanage to mingle, not to be in a bubble, socially.

"It's apparently completely empty. We have builders going in to undertake the renovations needed. Then, you'll need to go and organise what you need there, beds, chairs, all the furnishings and equipment. The budget is tight," Faith said, and she shrugged slightly. "We have far from limitless resources. But, we can do this." Smiling at Gennadiya, she nodded. "You've more than earned it and I believe you'll do an excellent job. You'll need to hire staff, and consider the processes in place. How does someone adopt a child from us, that kind of thing." Faith had run an orphanage, she told Gennadiya, in Scalvoris and, as such, she was happy to help. But equally, this was her project, and Faith wouldn't be interfering more than strictly necessary.

"Any questions?" Faith asked, with a grin.

Re: Order from Chaos : Foundations

Gennadiya gave her friend a smile as she offered her encouragement to obtain certifications. The blonde woman nodded her head as Faith spoke of using the classes for the trims and specialisms. “It will an excellent way for member of the order to expand their skills.. When I expressed an interest to learn healing to my father, he had me an instructor within a couple trials. It was nice to have her teach me what I needed to know and then put it in to practice with her. When I worked in the clinic in Ne’hear after my basic training ended. I had to do my own reading if I wanted to learn something new. I remember once I had by sheer luck read about a medicine that in larger dose was used as a poison, the trial before someone literally collapsed into my arms having been poisoned.” Gennadiya shook her head. “I still had to look up the antidote. It would be nice for others not to have that dramatic of a learning curve for something that was fairly available knowledge. I mean there is always a risk of confronting something you don’t know about and you need to research, but if nothing else we can teach them how to find an answer.”

Gennadiya listened to Faith concerns about letting just anyone use the labs, she gave a self mocking smile as she acknowledged Faith’s concerns. “I can only agree with every one of those concerns. I hadn’t thought my idea all the way through.” She then gave a soft laugh.

The attention was now focused on the project at hand. She looked over the plans and then up at Faith. “I will need to walk through them and decided the layout. I am not very good at imaging the dimension from these drawings, but once I see it. We would want to keep clinic, simple but warm, comfortable the family side a children place and the maternity area a woman’s world.”

Her blue eyes were thoughtful as Faith pointed out that they didn’t want the children isolated from the community. She nodded her head and thought for a moment. “That would be better. We need to remove the stigma of being an orphan as well. It isn’t there fault their parents died and they shouldn’t be judge for that. Being in classes with other children will help both them and there parents.”

Gennadiya nodded as Faith explained that there was a budge but not much of one. “We can make do, and I believe I can make some other arrangements. Quilting circles to make and donate blankets, gives woman a chance to get together and help. Talking with more economical sound people about donating old furniture they planned on throwing away. There are ways to help bolster the budget.”

A frown crept across Gennadiya’s face as Faith mentioned finding a good way for adopting. “That will be harder. I would much rather have the children stay then be taken by someone who needs cheap labor.” Gennadiya said in a cool voice. “There will need to be a fine balance in this process. We want children adopted but for the right reasons. Your right thought there will be a number of things to set up.”

"You will find," Faith said, softly, her eyes rather sad. "that it isn't just those without parents who will turn up at your doors. There will be those people who do not want children and so give them away. Rharne doesn't have slaves, so they can't do what my parents did, but they can give away their child. That happened on Scalvoris, both before slavery was abolished and, sad to say, more after it." It had always been a difficult part of the job for her, but she had done it the best she could, of course. Because - at the end of the day - those children needed homes.

On Gennadiya's assertion that she would need to walk through them, Faith nodded. "I don't understand maps. Or distance. I put it down to spending my first eighteen arcs in one building, but I used to get lost there so it's probably not that." Faith was beyond awful at directions and, frankly, those diagrams were barely something she could understand at all. But, she considered what Gennadiya was saying and answered, thoughtfully. "I've recently had some artwork made of my children," she said with a smile. "And the artist impressed me. It occurred to me that we could do with something more than just plain walls. She's agreed, so we're going to be working out how that works with her. I've also asked her to think about running art groups with some of our longer-term patients. Maybe we could look at something with the children, too." Faith wasn't sure, she said, and she didn't want to make any promises, since she was still in the process of ironing out the details, but it was worth considering.

She nodded at Gennadiya's notions for making things, donating furniture and so on. It was how she had built up Beacon, after all. It worked, but one had to be relentless. "Alright, well," she said, with a smile. "I'd like you to keep me informed and I'll expect regular reports, of course. In terms of set up and so on, I leave it in your hands, but that being said." It was important that she was clear about this, Faith knew and so she spoke. "I am here if you have questions, or concerns, alright? I really would rather you came to me than not. Small problems, quickly dealt with, then do not become large problems." And frankly, she could do without any more large problems. At all. Ever.

Maybe, Faith considered with a smile, she shouldn't be surprised that she sometimes felt a little overwhelmed. But, that notwithstanding, she was more than grateful that there were people like Gennadiya in the world. People who would actively and immediately help, who would work. Actions spoke much more loudly than words, and the young woman in front of her got on and did. So, Faith handed her the key to the building in question and said, with a smile. "Congratulations. I look forward to seeing what you do."

Re: Order from Chaos : Foundations

Gennadiya expression turned shocked as Faith spoke about people not wanting children. The blond hair healer believed Faith, but it was still not a pleasant thought. She sighed as she though about how one day she hoped for children and a lot of them. She had worked with any number of families over her arcs as a healer and often found the large families to be very happy. The mothers were certiantly tested but when the arc’s were done she never found a mother who had actually regretted it.

The young woman got her expression undercontrol then and said. “We will take any children that need our help of course, and help them to find families or at least become productive members of society as they grow up.” Gennadiya was aware that not all children would be adopted but she wouldn’t leave them to stranded once they were adults.

Gennadiya smiled at Faith and remembered her conversation with Eliza. “I will contact my friend Eliza,” Gennadiya looked at Faith with a raised eyebrow. “And see if she would be up for helping with the painting. She mentioned wanting to learn some healing skills maybe we can offer her an exchange.” Gennadiya shrugged at that point and moved on.

“I will keep you updated on the progress of the building, set up and procesdures, and any fundraiser ideas that I might have to make the clinic more comfortable.” Gennadiya said and picked up the floor plans. “Can I take these. I want to head over there tomorrow morning and spend some time exploring the place and it would be nice to have these on hand to see if I can make some sense of these.” Either way the Lysorian woman stood and bowed her head. “I hope the rest of your day goes well,” before she departed to return to her work, and more importantly the planning in her head.

I enjoyed reading about your character’s ambitions to help Faith with establishing and running the clinic and orphanage. You did a good job of conveying your character’s feelings and motivations throughout the whole thread which made it an easy story to follow. Apart from a few spelling errors I can’t find anything to complain about. Enjoy the rewards.

I could tell right off the bat that Faith is in charge and she knows how to lead. I can respect a character that knows what needs to be done and has a plan to see things through. I liked how well you played the mentor role and how fluidly you used the local lingo/locale in your writing. I found a little hard to follow simply because I don’t know the backstory of the necromancer but it’s hardly anything to complain about. Enjoy the rewards.
