Sleepless in Scalvoris

20 Ashan 718

Max shoved her way through the Almund tavern. She could've sworn she'd pushed open the doors to the Buckle and Chain she was wont to haunt, yet when she stepped inside something felt...off. She couldn't figure out if it was the furniture. It could've been the faces of the crowd for all she knew. Whatever it was, there was something that made the room feel alien. The Mixed Race shook her head. She hadn't the time to be paranoid. She'd come here to find Mercedes and that was exactly what she was going to do. Her hands gently guided her between conversing parties, narrowly avoiding drunkenly tipped mugs and stumbling patrons in her search. The bodies constantly bumping into her were about to convince her to throw a fist when she finally spied him with his back turned.

"There you are!" Maxine breathed her relief. Her hand reached out to grasp Mercedes by the shoulder with a broad grin on her face. The moment she touched him, however, he turned to reveal he wasn't Mercedes at all. In his place was Earth Mask staring right back at her, his eyes hidden by that sinister mask. Her own eyes went wide and her lips parted. Fear paralyzed her in place, and before she could so much as get out a word or raise her arms in defense, the earthen spear he raised above his head came soaring down upon her.

"No!" Max screamed, her flailing body rising violently from where she laid in her bed. The covers flung off the side of the bed entirely, pillows scattered in every which direction. Her chest heaved and cold sweat beaded across her forehead. Her hands came up to run down her face.

Fuck!

It was a dream. Just another dream. But it wasn't just a dream. It was a damned nightmare, and it recurred night after night. Some things were different but it always ended the same. He was always there. Sometimes it was in a familiar place she once loved to frequent like a tavern or a cozy restaurant in Almund or Scalvoris Town. Other times she was back down in that hole like she'd never left. One way or another she was trapped still, forced to relive that evening over and over again every time she fell asleep. Earth Mask might've been long gone from Scalvoris for all she knew, but the fact was he was alive and well within the confines of her mind.

Max threw her legs over the side of her bed with a frustrated groan. Her shaking hand snatched up the half finished bottle of rum from her beside table, and tipped it toward her lips. She took a few bits to chug the liquor before she set the bottle aside. Her head dropped in her hands. Alcohol and bug berries were what she been trying to turn to each time when her nightmares thrust her awake. The alcohol numbed. The bug berries brought on a high she felt in her body that made everything seem okay for a little while. A crossfading combination was something she'd been experimenting with, but nothing kept the nightmares away. Sooner or later she'd have to fall back asleep. Sooner or later he'd come for her again.

Through her fingers her caramel eyes spied something across her room. Peeking up from a bag she'd haphazardly tossed in the corner was a small collection of joints she'd bought from that drug dealer, DuCarinos, that one night at the Four in Hand.

Ambrosia.

The high she'd gotten that night was unlike any she had ever experienced in her life before. She wasn't out of it the way she was with Bug Berries or blacked out on alcohol. With just the right dose, she felt like she was something...more. Her energy was through the roof, the intensity of her focus unparalleled. More importantly, she remembered that the stuff had kept her up for days even though it was her first time on it. Her hands slowly began to slip from her face. She could practically hear DuCarinos' promises ringing in her ears once again.

"The drug allows you to reach a new level of awareness… of focus and control. You’re able to do more, think more, feel more, be more… but it comes at a price. As with everything."

Maxine slowly rose from her seat to cross the room toward the bag. Her hand gingerly plucked one of the joints from the stash before she wandered toward the window. Caramel eyes stared unseeing into the darkness hanging over Scalvoris Town. She could hardly remember what it was like anymore to have a decent night's sleep, undisturbed by the darkest corners of her own mind. Did anyone else out there awake with such intense spikes of adrenaline that their bodies shook, pupils dilated and bodies prepared to face a threat that breathed no life in their bedroom? She placed the joint of Ambrosia between her lips and leaned down toward the lit oil lantern hanging off to the side of her view.

"One of these joints will keep you awake for days with enough energy and focus to accomplish those feats you haven’t yet been able to. So, what do you say? Care to dabble in the darker things in life?"

The end lit and the smoke filled her lungs. She held it there for several trills before slowly exhaling, pulling the joint away from her lips so that a gentle stream of smoke bounced against the glass of the window. Just like that her deal with this new devil was sealed as tight as the joint DuCarinos had rolled. Despite the fright and exhaustion seizing her, Ambrosia broke through to fill her mind with nothing but clarity. The need for sleep slowly faded into the background as an otherworldly energy filled her. Maxine took another drag. She'd have to make the stuff last. Perhaps she could get away with only smoking half the first joint for now. It would be just the one. Tomorrow she'd throw the second joint out if she had to. Just once was all she needed. Just one break for a few trials where she wasn't tormented by the apparition. She wasn't going to get hooked. She could control herself. She could.

Sleepless in Scalvoris

It didn't take long for an alien motivation to rise within her. It ran through her veins from her head to her toes, racing through her arms all the way down to the ends of her fingertips. It was like artificial adrenaline re-engineered to preserve every level of function within her brain. Her pupils dilated, and suddenly it felt as though remaining sedentary a single trill longer was as painful as death. Dark thoughts were forcibly pushed aside to make room for the flood of ideas that rushed into her mind. Rattled by her change in consciousness, Maxine elected to stick to the promise she'd made herself only bits ago. Something in her stomach plunged the moment the end of her half-smoked joint was snuffed out on the windowsill.

Besides the fact the joint had been too expensive to just throw away, she found the Ambrosia hard to leave her hand. She put on some proper clothes and slipped the half-smoked joint into her cloak pocket. The walls of her own temporary place of stay felt as though they were collapsing in. The room was too small to sufficiently pace off the rush of energy that had floored her. The Mixed Race couldn't take it anymore. She threw open the door and marched out into the early, dark break of the new trial. Cool air rushed against her face upon her quick exit, gently billowing the ends of her cloak around her heels as she moved. The streets were dead but the world between her ears was so very much alive. It didn't take long for her to settled on the most important string of thoughts zipping through her brain.

I have to impress The Raven. I have to deliver.

The challenge that once filled her with mild anxiety instead turned into a rabid obsession. Her focus was unwavering, the invisible hands of her intellect reaching high and low for memories and information stored that might help her reach her goal. The sound of her own boots clicking upon the ground, occasional night owl stalking an alley she passed, nor the moderate chill in the air broke her dedication to her task. Images, sounds, and conversations replayed nearly perfectly as though they were happening again right then. Some were painful recollections, but intrigue in their significance for now downplayed the emotions they'd elicited.

The Mauve Maiden pulling into port. The party they threw. Sketchy captain. Lioveh. The crew. The crew's stories not adding up. Lies. Deceit. But why?

A connection between the cultists in the Element ranks and the arrival of the Mauve Maiden was yet to be decided. The ship and its sailors were definitely suspect. Maxine didn't have enough information to damn them though. However, it was impossible to ignore the important role the party had played. It had served as the perfect cover up for the chaos to come later. Something like that couldn't have been spontaneously taken advantage of. It had been something planned, and likely for a long time. Ultimately, it had been the council that must've allowed the celebration to take place. Involvement in the plot among the highest in Scalvoris authority couldn't be ruled out. Yet Kura Wolfsdotter had been there, too. If the Council was corrupted, it was only by a select few members.

I passed out. Ate something. Drank something. Probably drank something. What? Everything. Shit. But all from the merchants. All from the merchants. But not the Lotharro. Silviria worked. Something else. Something else.

Max shook her head. She'd been wrong. There was something there with the Mauve Maiden after all, but she'd been so focused on the most violent aspect of the experience that they'd escaped consideration. The scope of her search for answers widened. The whole thing had been far larger and more elaborate than she could've ever guessed. It ran deep and it spanned far. The Mauve Maiden were outsiders. A threat from them was almost expected. Everyone had seemed wary of the crew's presence the moment they sailed into port. The real issue lied in the Council and the Elements. They were Scalvoris. The Council signed off on the conditions that made the kidnappings an easy task. The Elements were supposed to be in place to ensure what happened was deterred. Influence and members within the ranks of both groups had led to the expression and exposure of the deep-rooted corruption within them. Finding the true culprits was like finding a needle in a haystack.

Perhaps she wasn't wrong when she'd made her deal with the Red Ravens. A rebellion against the Scalvorian authority had the power to displace those currently in power. One way or another, cleaning house would inevitably uproot the powerhouse of the cultists. It wasn't as though anyone could rightly trust them to justly investigate themselves anyways. The people needed to rise in order to protect themselves from further deception. Max would not, could not lead this revolution. She would by all means, however, facilitate it when the opportunity arose. This had to be done right. She could neither be too hasty or rash. The iron needed to be struck when it was hot and the Elements unpopular. That didn't mean the time to come to arms would arrive in Ashan. She'd need to bide her time and be smart. Only then would everything come neatly together. And it had to start small.

I'll start in the taverns where people know my face. I'll tell my story. I'll remind them of their grief and personal grudges against the Elements. Leaders with like minds will rise to rile their fellow citizens. Then, as a united Scalvoris Town, we'll all strike together.

For as long as she was high on Ambrosia, the world was a crystal. Max could see every moving part of her puzzle with new, keen eyes like never before. In this endeavor she wouldn't be able to tire. She wouldn't need to sleep or do anything else to ease her mind to stay sharp. This drug would allow her to obsess endlessly over her goal. All day, everyday. She would eat, drink, and worship the journey toward completing her vendetta. And as she continued to pace through the dark streets of a sleeping Scalvoris Town, her hand itched to retrieve and smoke the second half of the joint that burned a hole in her pocket.

Comments: Uh oh. Looks like someone might have PTSD and a case of the drug abuse. I really liked Max's thought process on the investigation, even if she might have been high from the Ambrosia. Good luck on cracking the case.
