Immortals and Magic

5th of Zi'da, Arc 717
From Victor Amielle's diary:

Initially I only wanted to get my Letter in History and Theory of Magic before I left Scalvoris again and went to another country, on another expedition. I had never had any interest in dedicating my entire life to academic pursuits. The classes that I attended in Saun and Vhalar turned out to be so interesting that I decided to stay for another two seasons though. Besides, my studies of the unusual phenomena on the island were not nearly finished. There were still so many things left to discover – but that is a topic that I will talk about in depth another entry. For now I have decided to dedicate a few more paragraphs to my experiences at the University of Viden Campus. As you may recall, most of my classes were taught by Migh Gir and Alison Jeeve, a rather interesting young woman …

“Today”, Alison Jeeve announced as she walked into the classroom, sat down on her desk instead of behind it and smiled brightly at her students before she rummaged through her bag, removed a bright red apple and took a bite out of it. That trial she was wearing bright yellow pants, royal blue ankle boots and a hot pink blouse with a lot of ruffles and had a white flower in her hair, Victor noticed.

“Today we are going to talk about the Immortals. We are going to talk about what the Immortals think about magic, to be exact – because not all of them like it. Some of them even refuse to mark a mage.” She paused, took another bite and cheerfully informed her students, “Feel free to eat something as well – as long as you still pay attention to what I say. All that studying probably makes you hungry. It sure makes me hungry!”

“Where was I?”
she asked, looked at them in confusion and scratched her head. “Ah yes, I was going to talk about what the Immortals think about magic. I know that you are getting a degree in History and Theory of Magic, but this topic is too important not to talk about it as some of you may eventually come in contact with an Immortal or with those that follow them – or have already met one of them.”

Victor nodded barely noticeably as he heard that. The season before he had met Delroth on a beach outside of Scalvoris Town that seemed to have been made of shimmering rubies. The Immortal of Vanity, Birds, Wind and Greed had given him his blessing as well as a task. Since that trial markings that resembled feathers adorned the back of his arms. Delroth did, as far as he knew, not care about the fact that he had been initiated into Transmutation. On the contrary, he had the feeling that the Immortal considered magic useful.

He also wondered if any of the other people in the room had received a blessing, looked at the somewhat pudgy young man that sat next to him and came to the conclusion that it was highly unlikely if his behaviour was anything to go by. His seatmate had a box full of pastries on his lap and was happily stuffing them into his mouth. His fingers were full of grease, there seemed to be something stuck between his teeth, and pieces of food decorated his shirt. As he noticed that Victor was staring at him, he looked up and asked in a somewhat rude tone, his mouth still full of food, “What are you looking at? She said that we could eat!”

Victor did not answer, but moved a little away from him as his behaviour disgusted him. When Professor Jeeve sat on her desk, ate something and tried to teach them at the same time, it looked almost cute – unlike when his seatmate did it – but no matter what she said, he would never eat in class or talk with his mouth full, even though he was hungry. He had more self-control than that, besides eating out of a box that sat on your lap just did not have style.

In spite of the fact that he often spent trials in the wilderness, without human contact, Victor, who had grown up among the rich and famous of Lysoria, still cared about good manners as well as keeping up appearances a great deal. The Blessed of Delroth was a vain creature.

Immortals and Magic

“So …” Alison said and cleared her throat very loudly in order to get her students’ attention. While she was perfectly fine with people eating in her class, she did not tolerate them chatting. “Some Immortals view magic as an affront – at least that’s what my colleague over in Immortal Studies told me. They think that we mages are taking something that doesn’t belong to them. Others think that magic is dangerous and that we mortals might abuse it. Yet others are merely curious about it or view it as a useful tool or a weapon. One Immortal that is especially opposed to magic – and necromancers in particular – is Famula. I can’t blame her, to be honest. Necromancy is terrible!”

She shuddered.

While his colleagues were busy writing down what Alison had said (including the fact that necromancy was supposedly terrible, as Victor noticed when he took a brief look at his seatmate’s notebook – he had copied Alison’s exact words and even added exclamation marks where she had spoken especially loudly), he raised his hand. He was not entirely satisfied with what the young assistant professor had said, and he had never shied away from speaking his mind. Alison looked at him for a moment as if she were wondering what he wanted from her, and then she asked, “Yes? Do you have a question, Victor? Is there anything about my words that wasn’t clear?”

“You made it sound as if it’s definite that some Immortals don’t mark mages”,
he told her and nonchalantly draped one of his arms across the back of the bench that he was sitting on. “Is it not simply the case that some are reluctant to mark mages and need to be convinced? Not all mages are the same after all, and some might actually be a perfect fit for an Immortal that usually refuses to mark a mage or just curses them.”

“Sure”, Alison said, took one last bite from her apple and threw the apple core into the garbage bin. At least she tried to do that. Her aim was so bad that it landed on the floor instead. She looked at it for a moment, shrugged her shoulders and turned back to Victor. “If you feel particularly daring, you can give it a try and convince them that you deserve their mark. If you decide to do that, I’d love to hear your story – if you survive.”

Having said that, she clapped her hands and proclaimed, “Alright, students. Class is over.” Victor’s pudgy and generally rather unappealing seatmate hastily stuffed the rest of his food into his mouth, grabbed his bag and jumped up, but Alison raised a hand, and he stopped. “Not so fast, young man! I haven’t told you what your homework will be yet.” His face turned as red as a tomato, and he immediately sat down again. “I want you to write a five-page essay with the title ‘Immortals and Magic’. Elaborate on what we discussed to-trial. The essay will be due on the twenty-fifth.”

“Why on the 25th?”
a young blonde girl with brown eyes that sat in the second row wanted to know, and Alison cheerfully replied, “Because I say so. I like the number twenty-five. In fact it’s my favourite number. Don’t forget to list your sources and tell me where your quotations are coming from, by the way. The last person who was caught plagiarizing was fired! I know that I can’t fire you because you are students – excluding you”, She glanced at Victor who met her gaze without flinching. He wouldn't be stupid enough to try and pass somebody else's work off as his own.

“But I can make you write a new essay – or fail the course, and if you fail the course, you are in trouble”, Alison continued. Having said that, she looked at Victor’s seatmate who refused to meet her gaze and announced, Now you can leave. I’ll see you all tomorrow. Good luck with your essays!”

The students all packed their bags, Victor included. He did not see any point in lingering after class had ended. As he walked past Alison’s desk where she still sat, taking notes, she looked up. “I’ll see you this afternoon at work”, she remarked. “Maybe you could tell me about that strange new feather tattoo of yours then.” Victor’s eyes widened as he heard that, and he nodded curtly before he left the classroom. He had not thought that she had noticed. His mark as well as his Transmutation brands were covered by his sleeves most of the time. Alison Jeeve, it seemed, was a very observant woman.

Immortals and Magic

Victor

Overview

I like what you did with the Professor here - she was very well played. I always enjoy the diary excerpts, too, they're a lot of fun to read, getting that inner voice fro Victor. He has an interested and curious mind and he thinks very analytically - you play a researcher very well! Enjoy the rewards, PM me if you've got any questions.
