5th of Zi'da, Arc 717
From Victor Amielle's diary:
Initially I only wanted to get my Letter in History and Theory of Magic before I left Scalvoris again and went to another country, on another expedition. I had never had any interest in dedicating my entire life to academic pursuits. The classes that I attended in Saun and Vhalar turned out to be so interesting that I decided to stay for another two seasons though. Besides, my studies of the unusual phenomena on the island were not nearly finished. There were still so many things left to discover – but that is a topic that I will talk about in depth another entry. For now I have decided to dedicate a few more paragraphs to my experiences at the University of Viden Campus. As you may recall, most of my classes were taught by Migh Gir and Alison Jeeve, a rather interesting young woman …
“Today”, Alison Jeeve announced as she walked into the classroom, sat down on her desk instead of behind it and smiled brightly at her students before she rummaged through her bag, removed a bright red apple and took a bite out of it. That trial she was wearing bright yellow pants, royal blue ankle boots and a hot pink blouse with a lot of ruffles and had a white flower in her hair, Victor noticed.
“Today we are going to talk about the Immortals. We are going to talk about what the Immortals think about magic, to be exact – because not all of them like it. Some of them even refuse to mark a mage.” She paused, took another bite and cheerfully informed her students, “Feel free to eat something as well – as long as you still pay attention to what I say. All that studying probably makes you hungry. It sure makes me hungry!”
“Where was I?” she asked, looked at them in confusion and scratched her head. “Ah yes, I was going to talk about what the Immortals think about magic. I know that you are getting a degree in History and Theory of Magic, but this topic is too important not to talk about it as some of you may eventually come in contact with an Immortal or with those that follow them – or have already met one of them.”
Victor nodded barely noticeably as he heard that. The season before he had met Delroth on a beach outside of Scalvoris Town that seemed to have been made of shimmering rubies. The Immortal of Vanity, Birds, Wind and Greed had given him his blessing as well as a task. Since that trial markings that resembled feathers adorned the back of his arms. Delroth did, as far as he knew, not care about the fact that he had been initiated into Transmutation. On the contrary, he had the feeling that the Immortal considered magic useful.
He also wondered if any of the other people in the room had received a blessing, looked at the somewhat pudgy young man that sat next to him and came to the conclusion that it was highly unlikely if his behaviour was anything to go by. His seatmate had a box full of pastries on his lap and was happily stuffing them into his mouth. His fingers were full of grease, there seemed to be something stuck between his teeth, and pieces of food decorated his shirt. As he noticed that Victor was staring at him, he looked up and asked in a somewhat rude tone, his mouth still full of food, “What are you looking at? She said that we could eat!”
Victor did not answer, but moved a little away from him as his behaviour disgusted him. When Professor Jeeve sat on her desk, ate something and tried to teach them at the same time, it looked almost cute – unlike when his seatmate did it – but no matter what she said, he would never eat in class or talk with his mouth full, even though he was hungry. He had more self-control than that, besides eating out of a box that sat on your lap just did not have style.
In spite of the fact that he often spent trials in the wilderness, without human contact, Victor, who had grown up among the rich and famous of Lysoria, still cared about good manners as well as keeping up appearances a great deal. The Blessed of Delroth was a vain creature.
