Ari'sora tossed and turned restlessly, trapped in uneasy dreams of being lost in an endless forest surrounded by the sound of falling trees.

"Do you think that we should wake her up?" Mi'zuri asked uncertainly.

"It looks like she's having a nightmare. Look, even her stupid cat seems to realize that something is wrong!"

Ari'sora whimpered softly in her sleep. She couldn't understand what the voices around her were saying, but she could hear them, and the tone of the words made her dream take a darker tone. Instead of being surrounded by the sound of falling trees, trees were falling all around her. And the way they fell suggested a malevolent intelligence about it. It seemed as though someone...or something was trying to herd her to the north.

Shadow hissed at Mi'zuri. Then she flexed her claws pointedly as she glared at the young woman.

"Trying to wake her up will only make it worse." Ryl'ryn said sadly.

She knew that from experience.

Once again, incomprehensible words made Ari'sora's dream shift and warp. Now the trees were chasing her. She knew that if they managed to catch her they would drop her in a pit of lava.

Ari'sora's body convulsed as if she was trying to run, and she whimpered fearfully again. After a few trills, she bolted upright in bed. She gasped for air as though she had been running hard. Her eyes were wild with terror as she looked around the room frantically. The malevolent feeling of being chased by someone who wanted to hurt her lingered in the waking world.

"Are you okay?" Ryl'ryn asked softly, not wanting to frighten her friend any more than she already was.

Ari'sora stared at her friend for several trills before answering.

"I am now." she muttered.

"Thanks." she added a trill later.

It took Ari'sora a few trills to realize that Mi'zuri was in the room too, but when she did she was filled with another fear.

"Are the children okay?" she demanded frantically.

She and her sister were not especially close, so Ari'sora couldn't think of any reason why her sister would be hovering over her unless something was wrong with the kids.

"The kids are fine, Ari'sora. They're still asleep."

Ari'sora gave her sister a tired but relieved look. She didn't know why her sister was in her room if it wasn't about the kids, but she was glad that they were safe.

"Maybe you should stay home from work totrial, Ari'sora. You look exhausted." Mi'zuri said bluntly.

Ah. So that was why. Ari'sora shook her head.

"I can't. The kids want to bake cookies for the refugees totrial, and Felicia won't have the time to help them."

Ari'sora hesitated as a very vivid image filled her mind. It made her chuckle now, but at the time, it hadn't been funny at all.

"If no one is available to help them make cookies, they are likely to try and make some themselves. And that is only begging for trouble." Ari'sora explained.

The last time they had tried to bake something on their own was when they had wanted to make a cake for one of the orphans to cheer them up for something. Not only had it taken Ari'sora and the kids who had been responsible for the mess breaks to clean everything up, they had nearly caused a fire when they left the cake in the oven for too long. No one wanted a repeat of that disaster.

"Well...take it easy then, alright? I'd better get back to the kids. Rin'saia usually wakes up about now."

With that, Mi'zuri left the room.

"I'll go make you some breakfast." Ryl'ryn offered.

"Thanks." Ari'sora said gratefully.

She wasn't really hungry after the nightmare she had had, but she knew that she should eat something so she would have the energy she'd need to keep up with the kids at the orphanage.

Once Ryl'ryn and Mi'zuri were gone, Ari'sora got dressed quickly. Shadow was watching her with concern, so she picked her friend up and cuddled her for several bits before setting her down on her bed gently.

I'll be fine, Shadow. Really. I just need to get away from all of these trees for a while, and helping the kids at the orphanage bake cookies will allow me to do that. she tried to reassure her friend.

Maybe you should think about moving. The Sweetwine Woods was a good home for us before everything that happened at Faldrass. But the trees just scare you now. Maybe you would have fewer nightmares if you weren't surrounded by them all the time.

Ari'sora stared at her friend for several trills. She had a very good point. Maybe she would be better off living somewhere that wasn't surrounded by trees that could fall on her at any trill. It was worth thinking about, at least, and she did know of a beautiful house that was currently for sale. Ari'sora thought that she would check her finances to see if she could afford another house that was big enough to house the refugees that were currently staying with her. It wouldn't be fair for her to move into a smaller house and leave them with nowhere else to go just because of some nightmares. She would also have to check the house out as well, and see if it was suitable for her family.

For now, though, she had to get ready for work. So Ari'sora set that thought aside for the time being, and headed towards the kitchen. Ryl'ryn was just finishing up getting breakfast ready when Ari'sora arrived, and the two of them sat down to eat together. The refugees that were staying with them would be getting up soon, and Ryl'ryn would be the one who was cooking for them, so she wanted to eat first so she could focus on her task when it was time to do so.

"What would you think about moving, Ryl'ryn? Shadow...err...I think it would be a good idea if we can afford a house large enough that the refugees who are staying with us can come too."

Ryl'ryn chuckled at Ari'sora's slip. She knew that Ari'sora often spoke as though the cat could talk just like a person could. Sometimes she even thought that Ari'sora really believed that she could. But the topic was a serious one, so Ryl'ryn gave it the attention that it deserved.

"Do you think that moving would help with your nightmares?"

"Yes. I really think that it would." Ari'sora said after a few trills.

"Then I think it would be a good idea. I can go looking for houses that are on sale later if you'd like. Then maybe we could go see some of them in the next few trials? We're in a good position here, so we don't have to rush anything. We can wait until we find a home that would be perfect for us."

Ari'sora nodded.

"That would be a big help, thanks."

When they finished eating, Ryl'ryn insisted on cleaning up the dishes, so Ari'sora thanked her again, and headed off to the orphanage. As was her normal routine now, she was up in the air the trill she got through the door so that she wouldn't have to face walking through the forest.

Ari'sora needed to relax before she faced the kids because if she didn't they would worry about her. So Ari'sora took some time to just enjoy being free as a bird safe in the sky. No one could hurt her here. Nothing could fall on her and crush her, or bury her alive. She was safe. The wind currents seemed to greet her happily, and she danced with them for a while, content to do nothing more than just fly. As she did so, she could feel her stress and upset simply melting away. It was still there in the back of her mind, of course. It never left her now, waking or sleeping. But the freedom and peace of the sky gave her the strength to focus on other things for a while.

It didn't take her long to get to the orphanage once she was ready to do so. The kids all but dragged her inside; they were that eager to get started. Ari'sora chuckled at their antics, and let them "guide" her into the kitchen.

"Felicia and Natts gave us this recipe book that we can pick the kinds of cookies we want to make out of." Hera explained eagerly as she pointed to a cook book that was sitting in the table.

"They said that the recipes in that book were easy enough that we should be able to make them even though none of us know that much about cooking." she added a few trills later.

Ari'sora nodded.

"Then it sounds like the first thing we need to do is to decide how many types of cookies we want to make. Once we've done that, we can get to work on making them." she said with a grin.

"Why did you decide that you want to bake cookies for the refugees?" Ari'sora asked as she and the kids gathered around the cookbook.

"Well...food is important. Everyone needs food to survive, after all. But cookies are more than just food. They're fun! Who doesn't like cookies?" Jacob asked.

Ari'sora had to admit that Jacob had a point. She had never been allowed to eat any kind of desserts when she was growing up. Once she had been freed from Ren'zar, she had discovered that she loved them. They were...comforting somehow. Like a warm hug. She had never gotten any of those when she was a child either, but when she was especially upset about something, she used to pretend that her mother loved her. She would close her eyes, and imagine her mother hugging her the way she had hugged Mi'zuri. Sometimes it helped a little.

"So by baking cookies, you are giving both food and comfort to the refugees." Ari'sora mused.

The kids nodded. It made sense. At first, Ari'sora had been certain that the kids were doing this mostly because they wanted cookies. And there was nothing wrong with that. But it was clear to Ari'sora now that the children had put a great deal of thought into this.

They looked through the cook book, and each of the kids chose three cookie recipes that they wanted to try making. Once everyone had chosen something, they voted on which recipes they wanted to try making. In the end, they chose a sugar cookie recipe that Ari'sora thought looked easy to make and a recipe for frosting to go along with it. The second recipe they chose was one for lemon white chocolate chip cookies. It sounded a little more complicated than the first, but the kids were determined to try.

At first, the kids wanted to split up into two groups, and work on the two types of cookies at the same time. But when they read the recipes through, they learned that the dough for the lemon white chocolate chip cookies needed to chill in the ice box for a break, they decided to start that recipe first, get the dough to the point that it needed to be chilled, then start making the other batch of cookies while they waited.

"According to this, we need one and three quarters of a cup of all purpose flour, a teaspoon cornstarch, a teaspoon baking soda, half a teaspoon of salt, half a cup of granulated sugar, half a cup of either light or dark brown sugar, one or two tablespoons of lemon zest, three quarters of a cup of softened butter, one large egg that has to be at room temperature, and one cup of white chocolate chips or chunks for the lemon white chocolate chip cookies." Hera said as she consulted the recipe.

"Why one or two tablespoons of lemon zest?" Jacob asked curiously.

"It depends on how strong we want the lemon flavor to be. Two tablespoons will give a stronger flavor." Hera explained.

Once the older kids had gathered all of the ingredients they would need, they split into groups. Ari'sora made sure that each group contained some of the older kids and some of the younger ones so that the older children could help the younger ones as needed and the younger ones wouldn't get frustrated or feel left out when they couldn't do something.

They consulted the recipe constantly, double checking everything that they did. Ari'sora carefully measured out the flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt for one group, who then sifted it together into a medium sized bowl. The other group carefully mixed the granulated sugar, brown sugar and lemon zest that Ari'sora measured out for them into another medium sized bowl. She also zested the lemons for the kids. It was important for them to mix the ingredients well so Ari'sora kept an eye on them while they did this, but she let them be the ones who actually did the work.

The next step was to beat the butter until it was creamy. This was done by a third group in another bowl. When they were done with that, Ari'sora checked the recipe and told then that they had to add sugar mixture that the second group had prepared, and beat everything until it was light and fluffy. Ari'sora kept a close eye on the kids as they did this. They checked the recipe again, and the next step was to beat in the egg. Following that, they had to add the flour mixture and mix everything just until it was combined. The recipe cautioned that it was very important not to over mix the ingredients, so Ari'sora paid close attention to make sure that they didn't. After that, it was time to fold in the white chocolate chips. Once that was done, it was time to let the dough chill. According to the recipe, it had to chill for at least a break, but it could be chilled for up to three trials. Chilling the dough before cooking it would result in thicker cookies that wouldn't spread in the oven while baking. Since they wanted to finish baking both batches of cookies totrial, they decided to let the dough chill for a break.

Once the dough for the first batch of cookies was in the ice box to chill, it was time to start on the next batch of cookies.

The kids wanted to dive right into making the next batch of cookies, but Ari'sora insisted that they clean up the kitchen and the dishes they had used first. They grumbled a bit, but they got to work quickly, and between Ari'sora and the kids, they were finished before they knew it.

"So what do we need to make the sugar cookies?" Jacob asked eagerly.

Ari'sora read through the recipe.

"We need three quarters of a cup of shortening, two thirds of a cup of butter, a cup and a half of white sugar, two eggs, two teaspoons of vanilla extract, three and a half cups of all purpose flour, two teaspoons of baking powder, and a teaspoon of salt." she read out loud.

"It also calls for a third of a cup of granulated sugar for decorating the cookies, but since we decided to go with frosting instead, we won't need that." she added.

"Can we put the sugar on top of the frosting?" Hera asked hopefully.

Ari'sora thought that it would be a bit much if they used both, but the kids wanted to do it so badly that she agreed to let them. The older kids quickly got all of the ingredients that they would need, and Ari'sora carefully measured them out, double checking the recipe as she did so to make certain that she measured out the right amount of each ingredient.

"What do we do first?" Hera asked.

Ari'sora consulted the recipe.

"We need to heat the oven to three hundred and fifty degrees. Then we need to cream the butter, shortening and sugar. Once that is done, we need to stir in the eggs and vanilla. The next step is to combine the flour, baking powder and salt, and stir that mixture into the creamed mixture until the dough comes together. After that, we need to roll the dough into walnut sized balls and roll those dough balls in sugar. Finally, we need to place them on an unprepared cookie sheet roughly two inches apart. I will take care of getting the oven ready while you take care of the rest of it. Does that sound good?"

The kids nodded. They split up into groups so that some of the kids could cream the butter, shortening, and sugar together while the other combined the dry ingredients. Ari'sora kept one eye on what the kids were doing while she was dealing with the oven.

When the oven was at the right temperature, Ari'sora checked the lemon white chocolate chip cookie recipe and was happy to learn that those cookies also needed to bake at three hundred and fifty degrees. That would make handling both batches a lot easier.

"According to the recipe, we're ready to bake the sugar cookies now." Jacob told her.

"They're supposed to bake for ten to twelve bits. We'll know that they're done when their bottoms are a light brown. When they are, we're supposed to put them on a cookie rack so that they can cool down. This recipe makes fifty four cookies, so if we make four batches of it, we'll have enough for a lot of refugees. Especially if we make more than one batch of the other cookies too."

Ari'sora nodded. They still had time before the lemon white chocolate chip cookie dough would be finished chilling, so once the batch they had just finished making was put into the oven to cook, she got the ingredients they would need to make three more batches.

While the kids were working on making more cookies, she got to work on the frosting. When she checked the recipe, she saw that she would need half a cup of softened butter, three cups of confectioners' sugar, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a teaspoon of heavy cream. Once she had the ingredients she would need, she got to work. The first step was to beat the butter until it was creamy. mix in confectioners' sugar. Stir in vanilla extract. Thin frosting with cream if needed. Then she mixed in the confectioners' sugar, and stirred in the vanilla extract. Since this batch of frosting was only going to be used on the first batch of cookies, she decided that the heavy cream wasn't needed because she didn't want to thin the frosting any. Ari'sora set the frosting aside so it would be ready to use when the cookies were cooling down.

It was time to take the first batch of sugar cookies out of the oven, so Ari'sora did so. Once the cookies were on the rack, the kids put the frosting on them while she checked on the lemon white chocolate chip cookie dough. It was chilled, so she took it out of the ice box, and checked the recipe once more.

"The next thing we need to do is line some pans with parchment paper. We can do that while the dough is sitting for a few bits because it is a little bit too hard to work with just yet."

The kids were quick to do as she told them. When they were done, they turned to her to see what they needed to do next.

"Okay, now we need to drop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets. The dough balls should be the size of one and a half tablespoons each."

Ari'sora had the kids do that while she put the other three batches of sugar cookies into the oven to bake.

"We're finished, Ari'sora." Jacob told her as she was closing the oven. Ari'sora checked the recipe once more.

"The cookies need to bake for about eight bits until they just begin to brown at the edges. The center should still be soft. The cookies will appear undone, but they will continue to bake on the warm baking sheet. After the cookies come out of the oven, we need to leave them to cool for ten bits before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. If we transfer them too quickly, they will break."

Ari'sora put the batch of lemon white chocolate chip cookies into the oven to bake, and checked on the sugar cookies that were already in the oven.

"How many cookies does this recipe make?" Hera asked.

Ari'sora consulted the recipe before answering.

"Twenty four cookies. So if we want to make the same number of these cookies as we are making sugar cookies, we will need to make eight more batches. The numbers won't be exact, but they will be close enough."

"Let's get to work!" Jacob said excitedly.

Ari'sora let the kids do most of the work preparing the batches of cookies while she made some more frosting, and took the cookies that were in the oven out of it when they were ready. She kept an eye on them while they worked, but the older kids took charge and made sure that everyone was following the recipe exactly. When the new batches of lemon white chocolate chip cookies were ready to be chilled, Ari'sora told the kids to go play while she cleaned up the kitchen. Then she joined them and offered to tell them a story while they waited for the dough to finish chilling.

When it had, the kids split up into groups once more and got the work done quickly.

"Thank you, Ari'sora." Felicia called from the doorway leading out of the kitchen as the last batch went into the oven.

"It was fun." Ari'sora said with a grin.

"And I think that I learned as much as the kids did."

Felicia grinned back at her.

"Still. You really helped me out a lot by being willing to do this with them. We'll bring the cookies over to Beacon on the next trial. Would you like to come with us when we go?"

Ari'sora considered saying yes. But although no one at the orphanage believed the rumors that were going around, some of the refugees did. Ari'sora didn't want to spoil things with her presence, so she politely declined the offer. Felicia frowned, but she understood why Ari'sora had refused, so she didn't say anything further. Instead, she dismissed Ari'sora for the trial, and told her to get a good night's sleep.

Comments: I really enjoy the extra effort you put into this thread. It's very clear that Ari'sora is traumatized by what happened at Faldrass. Although she thinks that moving may help, I wonder if she's right? At any rate, it's nice of her to clear out of the bigger house to make way for more refugees. I just hope she gets the help for her trauma that she seems to desperately need.

Apart from that, as she continues through her day the trauma seems to fade a bit, as she busies herself with various activities, including my favorite. The baking! The description of the lemon cookies in particular made me happy.

I'm sure the refugees will really appreciate these baked goods! Ari'sora is such a sweet person, I really hope things get better for her soon.

Great writing and enjoy the rewards!
