Qit'ria's fingers worked slowly, using some flexible bark she'd carved to tie several sticks together. She was making a simple frame, using sticks as crossbars. The bark wrapped around the intersections of the sticks, and many a times she would undo it if it wasn't straight enough. Eventually she had what resembled a box, though one end was opened. But to her, it wasn't just a box. It was a cage. A squirrel cage specifically.

She crafted a gate door for the open end, putting it on a longer rolling arm. When she fitted it into place, it allowed the gate to swing down into the cage, but not outward. Flipping it idly, she tested every bit of the cage a bit with her hands, making sure nothing was loose and that every stick was nice and strong. Satisfied, she grabbed her gear and the cage, and made her way westward.

Lately she'd noticed that the squirrels were starting to come out of hibernation, which meant this cold was about to break. And she wanted to be there waiting for the hungry ones. She'd already rounded up nuts and dried berries out of her food stores to use as bait. Upon arriving at a suitable oak tree, one she knew squirrels loved the nuts of, she set her gear down and got out a coil of rope. Holding one end, she threw the coil over a branch. She repeated this twice, and gave a nice tug on it, satisfied the rope wouldn't slip if she were quick, she leapt up and grabbed it. She swung back and forth a bit, and used her feet to grip the rope.

She held herself in place with her arms, then scooted her feet up the rope, and used that as a push off point. The rope slipped a bit and Qit hustled up the rope, hooking an arm over the branch, and hiking herself up onto it. Once there, she pulled the rope up, and cut off two lengths of it. One she used to make a cradle net for the cage, which she lowered down to the ground after looping it a few times, leaving the loose end to hang down. She tossed down the other length, then decided to try something her mom used to do when she was a wee Qit.

She stood up, arms out to maintain her balance. She then hopped off the back of the branch. She went down, caught the branch and winced as her shoulders jerked her to a stop. She then began swinging her body back and forth, kicking her legs as she went forward. On an upswing, she let go, and just like her mom used to she did an absolutely perfect back flip with a stunning landing. Or rather, would've, if she'd had any idea what she was doing. Somehow, she ended up face first in the snow, breath forced out of her lungs.

Annoyed, she got up, dusted herself off and stormed over to the cage, fitting it into the cradle she'd made, and hoisting it up into the air. She tied it off around a root of the tree to keep it in place. She began to free and unwind the rope, so she had a single thin, long strand. She tied it around a long, heavy stick at one end, and held onto it as she climbed back up to her branch. She looped the string over the branch, and tied it to the swing gate on the cage. The hanging stick kept it closed, but as Qit pressed on it, it opened up. When she let go, it closed once more. Perfect.

She pulled out a small sack of the nuts and berries, tying them to the underside of the gate, so it was suspended within the cage. The bait was set, and in such a way that forced a squirrel to enter it to get at them. Satisfied, she gathered up her belongings, and was about to head back to camp, when she saw it. The weaselbear. Or rather... badjerk, or something like that, that Earlo called it. Her nostrils flared angrily, and she drew her javelin, and began running after it.

It dashed over a large fallen tree, and Qit leapt up over it, getting a hand down to help vault her, swinging her legs off to one side. She landed heavily and continued to chase the fast little bastard. It darted under some brush, and she plowed straight through it. It was time to end this creature once and for all. She found herself dashing past a cave, ignoring it completely as she pursued the creature that had been tormenting her since Saun. At least she was, until something thudded heavily into the side of her head, and she felt sharp claws raking at her face. Her spear came up defensively, bapping whatever the hell the creature was with the shaft.

This put some distance between them, and Qit saw that it was a flunny. But she couldn't understand why it was attacking her. They never attacked, only ran. It dove at her once more with its flapping ears, and she thrust from the hip upward with her spear. It dodged easily as it closed in. Qit tucked her body into spear, and spun to the side, crashing the shaft into the body of the critter. It was thrown into a tree, where it fell a bit, standing on its legs, shaking its head in its daze. This was followed by the head of the spear stabbing just beneath its head, right through the neck, thunking into the tree behind it, decapitating the beast.

Qit pulled her spear free, looking to the direction the badjerk weaselbear had gone off to, but knew it was too late. It was too fast. Gone. And never left a trail. So infuriating. Turning back to the dead flunny, she picked it up, looking around for a place to dress it. No reason to waste a perfectly good meal.

Prey were incredibly foolish, the beast thought.

Of course, it was all a part of life. Predator hunted prey, prey fed on whatever it could, and in turn everything stayed sustained in a perfect circle. That didn't take away from the fact that some prey were beyond stupid. Ela was usually generous when it came to letting certain animals stay in this cave. After all, it was her Immortal blood that attracted them here and made them feel safe. It was only somewhat fair that she gave them some hospitality while they were around. Besides, it stopped her feeling lonely when the prey animals were around.
But sometimes Ela forgot that they were just animals, with little to no intelligence. So when one of them had decided to get too comfortable and lash out at the others, Ela felt that discipline was in order. She somewhat cared for the prey, and they provided a constant supply of food, meaning she rarely had to leave the cave to hunt in difficult seasons like this. For whatever reason, one of the deer had claimed a small corner of the cave as it's own. So much so, it stood opposite the Mortalborn, threatening to lash out at her.

Alrur barked at the creature as Ela stood facing it, contemplating what to do. Truth be told, she had little intention on fighting anything today. She'd already had a run in with someone in the woods, and this was the last thing she needed. But by all appearances this beast wasn't going to go down easy. She could allow Alrur to finish it off, and had no doubt that the feral dog could. But she was the Apex here, this was her cave and her woods, and as such she should be the one to dish out the punishment.
As Ela took a step forward, the beast bounded past her, a shiver going down Ela's spine - her Wild Refuge being broken. Three deer and two bunnies ran out of the cave, a smaller amount of beasts to what Ela would normally have. But she'd been eating off of them recently, meaning that there were very few of the beasts.

Ela found herself snarling as she ran to the mouth of the cave to see what had been happening, Alrur barking at her side. She ran out in to the dark, snowy wasteland that was outside and watched as all the prey animals ran in the same direction. Ela followed quickly after, her low-light vision showing her the way clearly, revealing what was ahead of her - a person.
Ela stopped herself when she realized what was going on, and that before her was just a stray traveller. Usually that was a good excuse to hunt, but a few things were clear. The first was that the woman was armed, and had already killed some prey animal. The second was that Ela was in no condition to fight, and admittedly not in the mindset of it. She had enough that day, and truth be told just wanted to rest.

Coming to a compromise with herself, Ela burst out of the woods in front of the stranger, keeping her distance and circling as the prey animals waited for what they thought was an opportunity to attack. Perhaps the woman would stand down, Ela thought, and save a lot of bloodshed. If she ran she could probably escape too, Ela just wanted her cave back to herself and her prey. But she couldn't assume that would be the case.
"Stand down" Ela snarled simply to the woman, her predatory eyes staring at her with ferocity. "We don't want anyone else to get hurt today."

Qit'ria heard footsteps coming, and immediately fell into a defensive posture with her spear, dropping the flunny corpse, her weapon drawn back past her hip in preparation for a thrust. A woman burst from the brush, and Qit immediately knew her to be a huntress like herself. Her clothes, her markings, even her movements, indicated huntress. And she knew this woman clearly was only here for one reason and one reason alone. She was here to steal Qit'ria's kill. Never in a thousand arcs would Qit'ria allow that to happen.

She glared at the opposing huntress, hearing her snarling words and was unimpressed. She summoned from her stomach a loud, vicious growl, challenging the woman, stabbing outward with her spear, not as an attack, but as a taunt. Qit'ria wasn't worried about this woman's concern or implied threat, she didn't fear injury, certainly not from a huntress with such a weak snarl. Qit'ria spun the spear up, and slipped it down through the straps on her back next to her javelins, and emptied her hands. Her opponent had no weapons, so neither would she. She'd never killed a person, and had no intention of doing so now. But she couldn't let herself be challenged, ordered around. It was inconceivable. It was unacceptable.

Her posture crouched low, her hands curled into fists, as she bounced back and forth from the ball of one foot to the other. She positioned herself in front of her kill, and her eyes quickly took in the terrain. And being on the defensive, she waited for the challenger to back down or attack. Glaring the woman directly in the eyes, Qit'ria bobbed and bounced her head lightly, similar to the snakes of the Hot Lands she'd seen from a far. She did this to try and hold the woman's gaze and attention for just a bit more. Then she snarled loudly, like the forest cats of home, hoping to offset the woman. This was her kill. She'd earned it. There was no place in this world for scavengers.

Her eyes narrowed sharply. There was only one true predator in this world, and Ela had just found her.

But her adversary didn't move, didn't respond whatsoever. Why? Did she not accept the challenge? Was she scared? Qit scoffed, turning her back on this other huntress. The coward. She moved toward her quarry, plucking corpse and spear from the ground and tree, respectively. Standing up, she looked directly at this huntress, and snarled loudly at her. Not in challenge, but rather in a derisive manner. A warning to not come after her again, while so weak and scared.

A smug grin crossed the huntress' face, and she left the small clearing. Pathetic. A huntress like that would be better off in the city, living in a house, being domestic. Maybe be a house wife, with a tiny, yappy dog. She was no huntress though. Qit made her way back to camp. Qit'ria set about cleaning the flunny. It was a good thing in her mind that her spark wasn't interested in this small creature. She wasn't really either. While she had a couple of forms that weren't predators, she really didn't care for being prey.

Kashehino appeared, slinking about the camp, sniffing at the flunny meat on a stick. "Darling, why didn't you bring the fight to that woman?"

Qit smirked, "Why bother? She was too scared to bother, and I gain nothing from fighting her, when she's too scared to fight back. She's more worthless than this flunny. At least this feeds me."

Kashehino nodded, and came over and laid her head on Qit'ria's lap. She wished she could feel the panther, pet it, cuddle it. Kashehino was one of her only friends, and her closest of them. If only she were real. She longed for it. But it didn't seem possible. Always out of reach. At least this way, Kashehino couldn't die. Once the meat was cooked, Qit munched on it happily, wondering how silly life must be to be a fearful, lazy huntress. Sounded terrible. A cursed life. And probably a short one.

Overview

This one was looking sharp, I was loving the encounter between Ela and Qit. This started out monumental like let's see what these two wild huntresses got but it was sad that it didn't pan out as the way it was going was savage.

My favorite line for Qit as she was authored true to form.

-But she couldn't let herself be challenged, ordered around. It was inconceivable. It was unacceptable.-

And my favorite line from Ela

-But she was the Apex here, this was her cave and her woods, and as such she should be the one to dish out the punishment.-
