Call for reinforcements #1 The Mission

Call for reinforcements #1 The Mission
Cylus 7 of 720 - Storm's Edge

The way the situation was developing made it clear that they needed reinforcements. Yrmellyn had debated with herself about how she best could contribute right now. Should she stay as a lookout in the tower, go down to take part in physical work and direct battle or - take on to call for reinforcements? She wasn't the only one who could do the lookout work. She was certainly not well suited for labour or fighting. But, she felt that she did match the requirements on a recruiter of reinforcements.

Although not a super expert she was competent enough at riding a horse, persuading other people and leading them. Her biggest strength for this kind of mission was, however, her insights in humanoid psychology. It was hard to not gain that kind of insights when you were working as an artist and portrait painter. Now, it might help her to influence the citizenry in the region and make them come to help out at the keep. And ... she was a mage, albeit a very cautious one...she figured that attunement might be of some use too. For once.

She could return to Storm's Edge later and help out with what she could there. But, at the moment, she felt that the best she could do was to embark on a recruitment trip to Rharne and it's towns and villages. They would need to get messages to the Thunder Priestesses and Lightning Knights of course. But, Yrmellyn wasn't sure of how those used to deal with their internal communications. She would ask. It seemed best to not assume that it would be her own responsibility, although she would for sure be open for taking on to leave some messages to the knights and the priestesses.

She had taken her decision and so, she began to plan.

In her mind, she tried to envision a map of the region ... this was vague, as she didn't know much about maps, But, she did now a ton about envisioning things, as all artist does and she was born and raised in Rharne, so she had a fairly good grasp of what she could do. For a start, she could ride from Storm's Edge to Mistral Village. There she could try to rally more volunteers of all sorts and also make the lumberers in the village aware of the Storm's Edge's needs of construction labourers.

Mistral Village was located between Storm's Edge and Rharne and under normal weather conditions it would be (she guessed) one day's ride from the keep to the village. If Yrmellyn would start in the morning of Cylus 11 she could arrive in the evening the same trial. She could do the recruitment effort in Mistral Village during part of Cylus 12 and then be in Rharne in the evening as it was only half a day's ride from Mistral Village to the city. So, that would mean that she would be able to begin the recruitment effort in Rharne on Cylus 13. As Rharne was big it might take her several trials to spread the word there, but if she would get help from the city authorities it might speed up the work.

At that pace she might - just might - reach Caervalle on Cylus 17 or 18 or so. Yrmellyn thought of it, feeling displeased. It felt like she would be working against time. It would take time to go on from there to Volta and to Zynyx Market ... she might not be in Volta until the Cylus 23 or so ... and so, arrive in Zynyx Market in the very end of Cylus. Her sense of urgency made her cringe when she studied her first attempt at a time plan to detect options for improvement, Yrmellyn was an artist, not a diligent project planner. Her experience at logistics was nearly non-existent. It showed. The first attempt at planning was a miserable failure.

She edited her plan after detecting some possible changes she could do.

it wouldn't do to wait with the departure until Cylus 11. She would have to begin the journey as early as possible. Let's say ... During Cylus 7-8 she would ride to Rharne via Mistral Village, hopefully rallying some volunteers from Mistral on the way. Then, she would spend Cylus 9 in Rharne and contact authorities in Rharne to spread the word about the need for reinforcements in the city. Cylus 10-12 she would ride to Caervalle. On Cylus 13 she would do the recruitment effort there.

The ride from Carervalle to Volta would take another three trials or so which meant that she would arrive in Volta Cylus in the early evening of Cylus 16, recruit reinforcements there on Cylus 16 and then go on to Zynyx Market in the evening of Cylus 17. Volunteers joining late, in Zynyx Village would then be able to get to Storm's Edge during Cylus 18-20 depending on how they would travel there.

There. It might work. Anyway, she wasn't able to plan any better than this. Travel time estimates were always only estimates and things could happen along a journey. Feeling that she had done her best at planning - such as it was - Yrmellyn handed over the lookout work to one of the knights and went away to prepare herself for speaking to the military leaders in charge. She hoped that they would trust her with the recruitment mission, but she must prepare better.

Yrmellyn would go and speak to the people in charge of the defence of Storm's Edge. She would offer them a volunteer initiative as a travelling recruiter of reinforcements - as soon as she had a bit more to back the persuasion up with.

It would look better if she would be able to show they a written schedule with clear goals though. Yrmellyn took a paper and jotted down the plan, not like a scribe would have done it, but not as casually as she used to sign her artwork. She didn't use to write so often, but she had at least a bit of knowledge about linguistics and writing so she couldn't be said to be totally unskilled. Cursive was also an easy language, a written equivalent to common.

Her experience as an artist saved her from making a mess of the campaign paper. As a painter, she had over the arcs gained the skill of a master. She a good eye for proportions and layout. As most other painters she was also competent at drawing. The difference between drawing characters and writing them was not so big that it was impossible for an artist with a trained hand to make a reasonably decent job of putting her plan on paper.

The spelling and grammar were challenges and she had to work hard at getting it right. She tested it by writing the words on a separate paper and then studying them in detail to detect faults. Sometimes she compared several alternatives. Words that turned out to be complicated to get right were replaced by easier options. It was a pain, but the importance of the plan made her keep up her work discipline. She compensated for her weaknesses by keeping the text short and concise. It included only dates and places and the main target groups for her intended efforts. It still took her a while to complete the work. In the process, she made paper birds of several failures and threw them into the fire, swearing. But, finally, she managed to create a result she could live with. It sure looked a bit artistic and drawn rather than formal but as an artist, she knew that an expressive style could affect people more than a dry formal style. It might be a benefit!

Recruitment Campaign

8th of Cylus Mistral Village
Recruit construction workers and able-bodied general labourers for logistics, rebuilding and maintenance. (Other people involved may recruit other kinds of resources.)

9th of Cylus Rharne
Recruit general able-bodied fighters and useful support staff like for example cooks and kitchen aides - fighters need food! (Other people involved may recruit other kinds of resources.)

13th of Cylus Caervalle Town
Recruit a few retired old knights and priestesses for added experience of war, tactics and more

16th of Cylus Volta
Recruit alchemists and ... well ... "some people" who may find it smart to join the war on Rharne's side

17th of Cylus Zynyx Market
Recruit merchant types who may find it profitable (short or long term) to join the defenders (or support them from afar)

Campaign Thread (Yrme, Vega, Mathias)

Looking at the plan and evaluating it again she decided that it would have to suffice. She was an artist and a woman of broad strokes and figured that the main points were enough. They didn't need information about, for example, the riding between the places where she would try to recruit. The knights weren't scholars. She bet that they didn't want any extra purple text which would only take more time to read. Actually, she wasn't sure if they were better at reading and writing than she was.

She took the plan and went downstairs, looking for people in some kind of commander role so she could get it approved and start the campaign.

Soon, she got a chance to speak to a lightning knight who said they were authorized to take this kind of decision. Yrmellyn had no insight into the military ranks and wasn't going to question them. Instead, she was happy to explain her plan to them. The knight looked at the plan and then at Yrmellyn.

"The plan looks okay. Not as boring as those papers use to be. Clear and crisp, no babble. That's good. But, why would we trust you with such a mission, Cole? What's your merits for the job and I don't mean daubing with colours...it's one thing to write plans, but another thing to follow through. Can you even ride? "

Yrmellyn let their obvious disdain for her profession slide. Some didn't like art. It was nothing new with it. Besides, she wasn't looking for a discussion about art. She was here to persuade them that she was able to do the job.

"I can ride and I am not bad at persuading people."

"It's nothing special with that. Many could say the same. So why should we pick you for this mission? I don't want to know about general things all people can do. I want to know what's unique with you. "

Yrmellyn thought of this a bit.

"As I'm born and raised in Rharne I can also use that to make them feel that I'm one of them. I'm only a common Rharne girl doing my duty, not a soldier of daunting battle competence. Not being so unique could make people feel that I'm like them. One of them. Many might think like If she can do it, I can do it!"

"Heh."

The knight looked at her. Their facial expression was as sceptical as their tone was. Yrmellyn began to feel like she was being tested. If she wouldn't be able to persuade this knight they wouldn't find her fit to persuade other people either. She thought a bit more. They hadn't rejected her reasoning (yet). Even though they seemed sceptical they were still listening. " Well, Cole, being easy to identify with can be a benefit for the job, but it still feels a bit too thin, to be honest. You can ride, you say that you aren't bad at persuading people and you are a local woman so common folks may feel that you are one of them. It's not wrong but isn't there anything more ... unique you can do? Something that not anybody can do?"

"I'm a registered mage if that's what you mean." Yrmellyn didn't like to refer to the magic. As she was registered it was no secret but many didn't like magic. It was possible that it would speak against her instead of making her seem better. She still said it. "It enables me to discern threats so I can avoid them. I'll be able to contribute to keeping an escort group safe. If I search for it actively I may also be able to sense the atmosphere and people's mood. I figure that it would be helpful for persuasion. "

She could see that the knight jerked slightly and straightened up a bit at this. Yrmellyn continued in a hurry. "Don't worry, I'm not using magic right now. I don't do it often. But, if it would benefit our cause and make me a better recruiter I might do it. I don't believe in pressuring people into volunteering though. Only those who really want to come will be possible to trust when the attack comes."

"Right. It's an important tactical insight you mention there. That's good. The magic ... well ... I can't know anything about that ..."

"I actually use to rely on other knowledge. As a painter, I have a well-developed insight into how people think and reason, feel and function. This can enhance my ability to persuade them, not by forcing my own will on them, but by understanding them."

"Understanding?" said the knight. "What do you mean?"

"When you understand people you can meet their needs. The people out there are terrified of the war to come, but they don't know what they can do. They want to protect themselves, their families and their property ... their city. But, they don't know what they can do. Many feel like they are helpless and can only wait for the disaster to strike them. But, we can give them another option, show them what they can do. "

"You seem to have thought his through and I can't deny that you seem to have a few useful abilities. But, there's one thing I don't ... understand. Even with an escort, it's dangerous to travel. Recruitment isn't without risks either. You are putting yourself at risk. Why? That's what I wonder!"

"I'm already putting myself at risk by being here in the keep." But that was only stating the obvious The true answer was something else. It was something personal and deeply felt. Yrmellyn felt the emotion well up insider and fill her soul.

"For Rharne, " she said. "For my love of Rharne. Our home town."

It was silent for a moment but she felt like the two of them could meet there, in this emotion. In the love and loyalty for Rharne these to very different people were united, two of a kind, on the same side. The knight nodded. "You've got permission to go. Be cautious. Try to collaborate with others if possible, there's another group travelling toward Mistral and Rharne, to get supplies. And good luck! "

The knight left and Yrmellyn began to prepare for the trip.

First, some paperwork. I have adjusted your knowledge awards to Linguistics (Cursive) so as to match the prerequisites for learning a new language. However you'll still need to spend points to bring it up to Broken.

"To level an easily learned language to 'Broken', you must have 1 Knowledge gained from practicing/learning about the language, and you must spend 25 skill points to purchase this rank." wiki/index.php?title=Languages_Used_In_Idalos

I found it most intriguing how Yrmellyn used her talents as an artist to visualize and approximate the map for her mission. It's an interesting use of her talents. I found it refreshing to see a PC be so thoroughly detailed about their own abilities and limitations when preparing and planning. All in all, a good insight to who Yrmellyn is and could be.
