25th Cylus, 718

Well, at least it isn't snowing any more. Lei'lira grumbled to herself as she, Teia, and the kids made their way to the stable that Lei'lira would be working at for the trial.

Not that the slush that they were left with now that the snow was starting to melt a bit was any better. In fact, it was worse in some ways. The wet, slippery slush was difficult to walk in. Simply going about one's trial risked injury from a fall. Especially in the dim twilight of Cylus when you couldn't see where you were going easily. And riding was even more hazardous than walking; if a person fell and broke their leg, they would heal if given enough time. But a broken leg was almost certainly a death sentence for a horse.

The stable she was working in was located in the Earth Quarter, which was at the base of the mountain Rharne was sitting on. But unlike the Dust Quarter, it was located within the city walls. The people who lived there were poor. They worked hard for what they had, but they weren't as bad off as the people who lived in the Dust Quarter. Their homes were made out of wood, and cheap stone, but the streets were kept clean. Most of the roads were made of well packed dirt. But some were made out of cobblestone. The main road that ran around the walls was one of the latter. Lei'lira had come to know the area well because she went there frequently. The base for the Order of Adunih was located there, as was the Thunder Dome, a public training arena that Vivian had introduced her to when she began teaching her. Lei'lira was a frequent visitor of both. Fortunately the guards maintained a constant presence in the area, especially around the gates. As such, the crime rate was much lower here than it was in the Dust Quarter.

As the elevator they were riding on descended towards the Earth Quarter. several of the other passengers were talking about a missing girl. Lei'lira wasn't one to listen to gossip, but in the close quarters of the elevator, it was impossible not to over the conversation. It seemed that a young girl from a wealthy family who lived in the Glass Quarter had been kidnapped a trial ago, probably by a gang from the Dust Quarter. Lei'lira wondered if Vivian was helping to search for the child. As a Thunder Knight, it was the kind of work she would be doing, and if her cousin knew about the kidnapping, Lei'lira couldn't imagine that she wouldn't be doing her best to get the girl home safely. She hoped that the girl would be found quickly, and that she would be okay. After her own experiences at the hands of the bandits that had held her captive, Lei'lira would wish that fate on anyone.

"Is it really okay to introduce the twins to riding so soon?" Teia asked.

Lei'lira gave her friend a grateful look as she nodded. It was obvious by the other woman's tone and expression that Teia was trying to distract her from her thoughts.

"I was their age when I was introduced to my first horse. They are able to sit up on their own, so this will be safe enough. They won't actually be riding, after all. The pony you use won't even be moving. And you will be holding on to them the entire time in case they start to fall. This "lesson" is really just to get them used to the way it feels to sit on a pony. That way, when they are ready to really learn how to ride, they can focus on that instead of trying to balance on the horse's back so they won't fall off."

The brief conversation was enough to distract Lei'lira from her memories, and deflect the possibility of a flashback. Lei'lira thanked her friend softly. The rest of the trip was spent in amiable silence.

When they arrived at the stable, Lei'lira was ready to get to work immediately. So she and Teia looked around until they found someone who could direct them to the person in charge. They were directed to a wiry old woman who had grey hair, and a determined expression that warned that she wouldn't tolerate any nonsense. Something about her stance made it look as though she could handle anything that came her way.

"Where do I start?" Lei'lira asked quietly after explaining why they were there.

The older woman let out a hearty, barking laugh.

"Eager to get to work, are you? I like that, girl! Well, work we've got, and plenty of it. See that stable over there?" the woman asked, pointing to a long building not too far from where they were standing.

Lei'lira nodded.

"We have twenty five stalls in that stable. All of them need to be mucked out. I trust that you know how to do that?"

Lei'lira nodded again. The woman's brisk manner was intimidating, but Lei'lira got the feeling that it came out of a lack of tolerance for incompetence rather than a dislike of her personally.

"Good. I'll let you get to it, then. Everything you'll need is by the door. If you finish up before we close, I'll give you something else to do. While you're working, your friend there can get those little ones used to sitting on a horse. I've got a nice, docile pony they can use."

It was a test of both her abilities, and her work ethic, of course. Most people would balk at having to muck out that many stalls at once. It was hard, dirty work. But it had to be done, and Lei'lira was no stranger to hard work. She watched Teia take the kids and follow the stable master towards another building for a few trills before heading to the stable and turning to her own task. One by one, she led the twenty five mares out into a nearby pasture. That would give them the chance to graze and socialize with each other while she worked. And it had the added benefit of ensuring that the noise she made while cleaning out the stalls wouldn't bother them.

When she was done with that, she emptied each of their water buckets, making sure that she was out well away from the stable when she dumped them out. Then, using clean water, and her scrub brush, she scrubbed out the algae, bits of hay, and clumps of grain that had gotten inside each of the buckets. Once she was finished, she set them aside so that they could dry in the sun while she finished her work.

Lei'lira moved the wheelbarrow so that it was right outside the stall she was about to muck out so that removing the horse manure would be easier to manage. Then she took a quick look around the stall to see if the straw and manure were strewn about. It hadn't been, so Lei'lira knew that the mare who lived in it had not been in distress during the night. Then she began by using her manure fork to pick up the larger pieces of manure in the stall, and put them in her largest bucket. When she was done getting all of the larger pieces, Lei'lira used her pitchfork to sift through the straw bedding in search of the smaller pieces. After she was finished removing the manure, she dug up the urine spot in the stall. Since she didn't know the habits of these mares, she had to search for it. As she worked, she was careful to remove all of the wet straw while taking as little of the good straw along with it as she could manage. Finally, it was time to examine the stall she had just mucked out. There were no exposed nails that she could see, and the hinges of the stall door weren't loose.

Once she was satisfied that the stall was safe, she brought some fresh straw into the stall. Using her pitchfork, she mixed it in with the older stuff. The last thing that needed to be done was to fill the water bucket with fresh water. When she was finished with that stall, she wheeled the wheelbarrow out of the stable, and asked a passing stable hand where she should dump it. One by one, Lei'lira mucked out each of the twenty five stalls. It took several breaks, and left her feeling tired, but with a sense of accomplishment at a task well done. The weather helped; doing such a task in the extreme heat of Saun would have been far worse. By Cylus's standards, it was quite pleasant. And the heavy work helped to warm her up.

Lei'lira gave each stall a final once over to make certain that she hadn't messed anything. Then she led each of the mares back to their stalls before going to find the stable master, and let her know that she was finished.

She found the older woman working with a gelding on a lunge line. Lei'lira watched the woman work for several bits before approaching. When done properly, lunging a horse was both good exercise, and a useful training tool for a horse. It was also a diagnostic tool of sorts; if a horse was lame, testing its gaits on a lunge line was a good way of finding out. The woman seemed to know exactly what she was doing, using her riding whip to good effect, and making sure that the lunge rope didn't trio her up or get in the gelding's way as he worked. Her vocal commands were clear, and her body language made it clear exactly what she wanted out of her horse. None of this surprised Lei'lira. Everything she had seen in the short time she had known the older woman spoke of her skill and confidence.

Lei'lira moved to a spot where the stable master could see her, but waited for her to speak first, not wanting to interrupt what the other woman was doing. As she watched, the older woman requested alternating walks, trots, and canters from the gelding. While doing so, she would move him farther out into the circle, then bring him back in. And it was all done seemingly effortlessly. That was a sign of a good trainer.

"Thank you for not interrupting me when you came over. We just got this gelding, and I wanted to put him through his paces and get a feel for his gaits before renting him out to the public. The last thing we need is for an inexperienced rider to get injured, or worse because of a horse they rented from us." the older woman said as she brought the gelding in, ending the exercise.

Lei'lira nodded. It wasn't something she had ever considered before, but for a stable that rented horses out as well as housing them, it would be very important to make sure a horse was safe before letting an inexperienced rider near them. She had every intention of doing that herself when it came time to teach her kids how to ride. A stable hand came up to them, and led the gelding off for a good cool down.

"I take it that you're finished?"

"Yes." Lei'lira said simply.

The woman studied her, and Lei'lira got the feeling that she was wondering how much more work she could get out of her. A lingering glance at Lei'lira's belly confirmed her suspicions. The older woman was worried about overworking a pregnant woman.

"I can do more if you need me to." Lei'lira promised.

The older woman's eyes narrowed as she stared at Lei'lira. Then she laughed.

"I don't doubt it! Why don't you help me feed the horses, and then we can call it a trial? Any good horse woman knows that you don't over work your horses. It's the same thing with people. You're willing to work hard, and that's good. But if you let yourself work yourself into a state of collapse, you risk that kid of yours, and I'm out a good, willing worker. No. I much prefer to work within the limits I'm given. That goes for both horse, and employee."

Lei'lira smiled at her. Then they made their way to the barn where the feed was stored; they had horses to feed.

I can't count the number of times I've had a day doing this exact work. It's so cathartic, even just to read it. I'm wondering if you work with horses in real life, because this all seemed to simple and realistic. You've either done your homework, or literally done it. It was a good read. I'm always happy to see a horsey thread.
