Appearance
Ismene is tall and thin, with long dark hair and olive skin. She tends to wear dark coloured clothes that emphasise her slender figure. Her eyes are dark - in the right light, or the right mood, they seem almost black, but most of the time they are a deep brown. Her features are sharp, and there is often a smile twitching around her lips. Her expression is active, her eyes darting around constantly. She dislikes being stationary, and has a habit of fiddling with things when she doesn't have work to keep her hands occupied. Despite this, her energy is not of the nervous type. She has an inner confidence that belies her relatively humble origins. She looks like the sort of person who gets things done.
Personality
Ismene is an ambitious and secretive person. She loves passionately but rarely trusts deeply. People tend to confide in her, perhaps lulled into thinking that she will be as careful with their secrets as she is with her own. For Ismene though, anything has a price, and knowledge is valuable. She will not scruple to use secrets to further her own ends, although she is anything but a blabbermouth. Secrets are to be used wisely, not wasted, and she looks down on overly talkative people as weak-willed and foolish. As far as she is concerned knowledge and power are just two sides of the same coin. Born into a relatively humble family, she is determined to raise her status. She is a thrillseeker constantly on the lookout for new experiences, and she brings that curiosity to her work. A baker by trade, she plans to rise in the ranks, and quickly. She is always experimenting with new ideas in her cooking, and sees no harm in spicing her food up with some of the more exotic ingredients out there. She enjoys the finer things in life, but she's equally happy sinking ale in a rowdy tavern; she never willingly misses a party.
History
Ismene was born into a large family. Her farmer parents had a medium-size farm in Treth, a few days from Ne'haer.
Most of her siblings settled down happily into village life, marrying their childhood sweethearts and producing flocks of little future farmers. Although she is on good terms with her family, Ismene was always been bored with the small horizons of the village, and as a young teenager she chose to apprentice to the village baker rather than follow her parents into the fields. Even at an early age, she knew she needed to choose a path that would take her away from home before too long. She arrived in Ne'haer in Ashan 717, full of anticipation for what the city would be able to offer in the way of stimulation and intrigue. She hopes to carry on working as a baker and eventually a cook, partly because of a genuine love for her craft, the ability to create new and wonderful flavours out of simple ingredients, and partly because she senses that the career may present opportunities to get close to the rich and powerful.
She has had several relatively short-lived love affairs, almost all of which ended up with her heart intact while her partner's lay trodden into the dirt. The village boys were nice enough for a while, but none of them could keep her interest for long, and she had no plans on settling down any time soon. The only time her heart came close to being touched was when she shared a drunken night after a harvest festival with a childhood friend, the daughter of the family who owned the neighbouring farm. Afterwards the girl was embarrassed and regretful, and made Ismene promise never to tell anyone. But for Ismene it had not been anything to be ashamed of. It had been a new awakening to feelings she had never imagined before, and that the naive farm boys had never managed to arouse in her.
Village life is full of gossip, and like all villagers Ismene engaged in the trading of titbits of information from a young age. Unlike them however, for her it was more than just an idle pastime to fill the evenings. She got into the habit of watching those around her and keeping a journal where she notes down any intriguing side remarks, uncomfortable silences or involuntary glances. As a result, she knew pretty much everything that went on in Treth.
Her hobby proved useful early on, when she asked the village baker if she could apprentice with him. At first he was dismissive, calling her a silly girl who would be better off finding a husband than trying to get a job. But when she insinuated that she knew about the way he'd been taking advantage of the mathematical innocence of some of the villagers to shortchange them, he quickly yielded and offered her a job, and a cagey sort of respect from then on as well.
