Appearance

Dio is a Qi’ora, exhibiting those traits for which his race is best known. His body is entirely hairless, though he has taken to drawing on eyebrows as he noticed many isolated and xenophobic customers were uncomfortable with his lack of hair. His skin has the deep veins that cut down to his bones, congregating on his scalp, the sides of his feet and his hands.

He towers above nearly everyone, his slight frame adding to the appearance of height. His almond shaped eyes are dark brown, often appearing black. He moves slowly, each action with its own distinct purpose. Despite this, he is nearly always in motion, spinning his family’s ring or gazing about.

Dio prefers robes when out in public, having felt first-hand the effects of racism. He likes blue, always wearing something of that colour, and rarely pays attention to current clothing fashion. The only exception is jewelry. Due to the nature of his job, he is required to produce items that are worn, often by nobility or successful merchants. These must not attract undue attention, and so he follows the current jewelry trends religiously.

When alone or working, he wears shorts and a thick leather apron. He prefers to work outside, soaking up as much light as he can, and will sit with his feet in a tub of water so as to keep from distractions.

His hands are long, with noticeably odd, slender fingers that are well cared for.
Personality

Dio is outwardly calm and unflappable, the perfect definition of composed. Inside, he feels the same desires and emotions everyone else does, but his father long ago taught him to control his reactions.

Like all Qi’ora, he detests violence, and would rather let himself be killed than fight. He has taken his races love of practicality and art, making it his life’s goal to create the most incredible and beautiful pieces of armour and enchanted jewelry.

The Qi’ora’s sense of humour is often dry and self-depreciating, and many a time has his joke been met with a blank stare. He has no issue laughing with others, and is usually perceptive enough to catch their humour. His laugh is a quiet chuckle, rarely heard except by those closest to him.

On the other hand Dio is incredibly focused and driven. Once he has begun a task, the rest of the world fades away and time is meaningless. This single-minded determination allows him to complete tasks very fast, but takes its toll on him. Often he will work in spurts, disappearing for a trial or two as he finishes an entire order, then wandering about aimlessly for several trials. The focus also means he is vulnerable and distracted when working. Customers that interrupt him find him distant and distracted, which doesn’t help his apprenticeship prospects.

He likes those who are comfortable with working together in silence, and cannot stand mindless prattle. Small talk, in the right setting, is fine with him and is seen as a necessary part of business. Whether that business is him selling his products or satisfying his endless curiosity, he always tries to get the best deal he can. He often views regular conversations as a barter of sorts, with information as the currency.

Dio has great difficulty saying no. From a beggar asking for coins on the street to a new client looking for a nearly impossibly ring, Dio is a people pleaser. This has landed him in some hot water, and makes it very difficult for him to get confrontational.
History

Arc 685: Dio was born to a regular Qi’ora couple in their mid-hundreds. They lived in Nashaki, his father owning a mildly successful armour shop despite the dislike of hide by the Qi’ora. His mother blew glass, and was an incredibly accomplished artisan.

Arc 690: His first informal apprenticeship came at the age of five when his father began to have him help out around the store. Carrying buckets of lime water, the compound for removing fat and hair from the skin, or carefully cutting the horns and hooves from the skin were all things his father taught him from a young age. As he got older he was given more and more responsibilities, and was soon working exclusively with the finished leather, carefully cutting and sewing it into poko saddles or armor. His relationship with his father was perfect- the two joked together, enjoying the time spent in each others company. Dio’s father showed his true side while working with his son, and explained to him the importance of controlling your emotions. Dio’s adoration of his father was absolute, and soon had no problems controlling his reactions. This only made his father even prouder, and the two grew together like only father and son can.

During this time his mother filled his free time with the art of glassblowing, and taught him of her love for the craft. Rolling the quickly softening glass over the flames was a task that thrilled Dio, and he was content to watch the flames lick around the glass as his mind drifted off.

Arc 695: At the age of 10 he was first sent away. This was the first apprenticeship, and by far the most successful Dio had. It was with a successful gem merchant who taught Dio everything he knew over the course of several arcs. Much like any other apprenticeship, he was delegated to cleaning and handling customers as his teacher slowly showed him the ropes or the gem trade. Dio fell in love, and for several arcs immersed himself in the trade. He learned of clarity, durability, rarity and how to carefully fit the priceless stones into their facings. Likewise, he was taught how the market worked; of supply and demand, of influx and interest rates. However, as Dio grew older, he began to have conflicts with his teacher. It stemmed from Dio’s inability to refuse others help.

At long last, his master had enough and cast Dio out, sending him back to live with his father. Their relationship was strained for several seasons as Dio’s father struggled with his son’s disobedience, not understanding the cause behind it.

Attempting to bring back their bond, Dio’s father revealed a secret- he was a mage. Over the course of several seasons, he showed Dio the tricks of his trade, and their old relationship was rekindled. Eventually, the time was right, and Dio’s father initiated him into the art of Dustforge.

Arc 705: The bond between the two stayed strong for many arcs, but Dio began to get restless in his desire to learn and grow. His father set up several more apprenticeships during this time, each lasting only a few seasons as Dio’s lack of confrontational ability became a hindrance, even among the Qi'ora. He picked up a smattering of skills, and he practiced his magic in secret during this time. Most of the failed apprenticeships were to gem merchants, and it wasn’t long before Dio had angered all of those in Nashaki.

Arc 716: At long last, Dio set out for new horizons. His father sent him out with his blessing and the family ring, passed down from father to son for uncountable generations, and a small amount of relief. It was time for Dio to sink or swim, based only on his own merits.
Housing

Dio was given enough coin by his father to purchase a house in the city of his choice, and he soon found the perfect little house. It is crammed in Midtown, a stone building that looks older than Dio’s father. Only half a dozen bits walk from his newest job, Dio is happy with the location.
