I have seen the sea when it's stormy and wild; when it's quiet and serene, when it's dark and moody. And in all these moods, I see myself.
- Martin Buxbaum

Inspirations
On the Surface
Jewel like in appearance, Nixies eyes are an opalescent purple hue with small flecks of fiery orange sprinkled in their depths. Set in heavily lidded sockets and crowned by thick lashes, her gaze is always searching. Perched above them are two straight and faint eyebrows. Their color only slightly darker than the long, lustrous, wavy, platinum colored tresses atop her head. Unkempt as it is, it delicately frames her heart-shaped face and sharp cheekbones, hiding pointed ears. Her nose is thin and dainty and match her narrow, pouting, lips rather nicely. Her elegant neck blends gracefully into sloping shoulders and thin arms which stretch down to small yet strong hands and claw-like nails.

Ivory colored skin wraps smoothly over muscles and bone. Spending most of her time under water, it can sometimes appear luminescent. That’s mostly due to the sparse scales placed in various places. There are a few near the corners of her eyes, flowing from her shoulders down to her shoulder blades to curve around her ribs and trail down the left and right sides of her abdomen. Generally speaking, from her torso up she’s has a willowy build. But from her hips flow eight long, ink black, arms. Appearing slimy to the naked eyes, if one were to touch them, they would feel as smooth leather. The only other color on her tentacles is a grayish brown on the underside of each arm.
Below the Surface

Always trying to be her best self, she likes to be seen as relaxed and playful in most situations. If only to hide her less desirable traits. Curiosity and imagination send her thoughts to far off, exotic, places where she thinks mystery and adventure await her. The impulsive want for things not experienced and out of her grasp can turn her usual fiery, sarcastic, and humorous attitude into one of gloom and envy. Watching those that live above the water from a distance, she tries to imitate some of what she sees. When she wants something badly enough, that’s when her less desirable traits begin to surface. With a tendency toward selfish behavior, she doesn’t shy away from using deceptive methods and scheming calculation. If what she desires is withheld, brutal tactics aren’t off the tables. Even with all that said though, her goals can change at a whim. Making her seem contradictory, noncommittal, and unreliable if not difficult to understand. While others might view her easily changing mind as flexibility.
Underwater Abode

Nixie resides in an old sunken ship. She doesn’t know how long ago it sank, but from the wear on the wood she guesses it was a while ago. It sank in relatively shallow waters, so vague details of the wreck can be seen even from above water. Surrounded by imposing rock cliffs, the relative darkness suits her. Because it isn’t well hidden, it's been the target of scavengers since she took up residency. Needless to say, those who dare to venture down to investigate are surprised to find her in its wreckage. Their surprise leaving them vulnerable, Nixie has the advantage to do as she pleases. To kill for their trespass, scare away, or play with her guests. All are viable options and the outcome depends on her mood. Due to the damage the ship has sustained, some rooms are impossible to access. When she wishes to hide away from everybody, she often spends time trying to find ways into sealed rooms. Wondering what mysteries each one might hold for her.
History

An Uneventful, If Not Slightly Lonely, Childhood.
Born into the Akktava Tribe, Nixie hovered on the fringe those who had eight arms as she did. Even among Mer kind, intolerance of those unlike yourself, wasn’t unheard of. However rare the instance. While she kept to herself, even among her own kind, she avoided those with legs and tails out of fear of judgment. Instilled in her from a young age and persisting through the years. It wasn’t uncommon for the young Mer to wander away from peering eyes in search of solitude and adventure.

First Contact.
On one such adventure, a handful of years later, Nixie ventured toward the surface. Sensing the presence of something unknown to her, she couldn’t resist the urge to investigate. Stopping only inches from the surface, she watched as a smooth wooden hull drift toward her. Only recognizing it from the water worn examples that were scattered across the sea floor. The nearer it came, the more it slowed, until it sat bobbing up and down in place. Curiosity nagged at her and made her wonder,
“Who are they?” The question came as a thought, but was vocalized in telepathy.

At first, only the sound of moving tides answered, but then distant, muffled, voices exchanged garbled words. Some were excited while others seemed intentionally hushed. Soon distorted silhouettes were at the edge of the boat and making confusing gestures with their arms. From what she could tell, most of them were holding things in their hands while just one waved his in a frenzied desperation. She stared at the one that waved, uncertainty weighing her down. “What’s it trying to do?” With the question, an unfamiliar voice ripped through her mind. It yelled frantically at her in what, she believed, had to be a foreign language. While trying to decipher the creature's words, her colorful eyes narrowed. Breaking through the surface, a long spear flew past her. She didn’t know what these creatures were or what they wanted, but apparently their intentions weren’t very good.

Before she had time to react or retaliate a few more whizzed by. One nearly grazed her, infuriating the Mer and twisting her Semi-human features into expressions of annoyance and anger. Whipping one of her eight legs forward, she caught a spear that would have impaled her otherwise. Tired of whatever nonsense these creatures were up to, Nixie propelled herself upwards until her head and shoulders bobbed above the surface. Maybe it was the scowl she wore, or her presence alone, but her aggressors stilled at the sight of her. She was about to reprimand the bi-pedal creatures when one pushed the others back away from the boat's side and stood with arms stretched wide between her and them. His back was to her, and he spoke to his colleagues. Now that she was closer, she had a much easier time understanding the conversation. They wanted her dead.

Once Nixie realized the situation she was in, things became a blur of anger, movement, fear, and pain. As quickly as it had begun, it was over and she was left trying to collect her thoughts and piece together what had just happened. The creatures were called Biqaj and somehow she had earned their wrath. That part was still foggy. One of them had tried to protect her, and was mostly successful too, but one spear had managed to sneak past and plant itself near the base of one of her tentacles. The Biqaj seemed very worried about her injury, but she reassured him that the wound would heal well enough on it’s own. Even then, he fussed over the bleeding and insisted that she allow him to tend to it. In the short time the two spent together Nixie developed an interest in the mysterious creature. To her dismay, it was one sided and he soon sailed off into a world she knew so little of. The result of their chance meeting and interaction left her with a longing to venture beyond the waters she called her home.

Just Trying to Help.
As Nixie grew older, the memory of cruelty and kindness at the hands of Biqaj left a picture of contrast in her mind. It was a constant reminder of the world she wished to explore and races she wished to meet. Surely there were others, and maybe they would be cruel too, but if they were like the Biqaj then surely there would be kind ones among them. And if she could find them, surely they would have much to teach her about the world above the water. Convinced she was right, and ignoring the warnings other Mer gave, she watched land until she understood the traveling patterns of boats. Where they docked and what directions they traveled when leaving port. With confidence she would follow beside them or lead in front of them, all the while listening to their conversations. It was through her eavesdropping that she heard tales of far off places and strange creatures that only drove her passion to see the world that she was told to hate.

Becoming too confident, Nixie ventured toward land. While there weren’t any very large boats in port, she watched some small figures running around and giggling. Curiosity pulled her toward the docks, but she was careful to stay below the surface until she was under them. From under the dock she listened quietly to the hurried steps of such small humans. Recalling the stories she heard while secretly escorting ships, she guessed that these were the sons and daughters the sailors spoke so lovingly about. They chased each other up and down the wooden planks and looked to be having a wonderful time until she heard, from the shore, a woman called out, followed by the scream of a young girl as she stepped too close to the edge and lost her balances.

Nixie smiled a little when the girl landed in the water with a splash and started flailing her arms wildly. She thought this was part of the game too, and that the girl wanted to include the Mer in their games. Inching forward, Nixie tried to emulate the child’s actions in an effort to play along, but soon realized that the girl wasn’t having fun anymore. Her joyful chortles replaced with desperate gasps for air and wide eyes when water filled her lungs instead. Even in Nixies inexperience, she could see the girls overwhelming terror. Concerned for the child, she wrapped tentacles gently around her waist and a shoulder, pulling her near and effectively keeping her head above the surface. Nixie closed her eyes and focused. Cradling the girls head, she thought the words, “calm down,” in what she hoped would be a soothing tone.

Before she could see if it worked, the sound of heavy feet and angry voices were approaching. Opening her colorful eyes, she knew they were coming to take the girl, and she was relieved that they were so quick to react. Searching the girls features, she gave a slight smile when she saw the her words had helped. The child met her gaze with wide eyes and wordless amazement. She was still recovering from the scary ordeal she had just gone through, wheezing and short of breath, but the Mers eyes were mesmerizing. While she was enthralled, Nixie lifted her up out of the water. Wrapping a tentacle around a dock post, she hoisted herself and the girl up. Before she could set the girl down, a group of men were practically on top of them. They hurled angry, accusing, words at her and held spears that they prodded in her direction, but only after one of the men had snatched the girl away.

Nixies confusion quickly changed to anger as the land-dwellers forced her off the dock with the threat of their weapons. While a wall of fuming faces glaring down at her, the speechless child peered calmly over the shoulder of a man and waved goodbye until he handed her off to a crying woman on shore. The corners of Nixies lips bent into a frustrated frown and her brows furrowed together. Defeated, she let out an exasperated breath and returned to the water. Unsure how she could have defended herself against their accusations, she retreated. As she sank deeper and deeper, she wondered with a little sadness if all land-dwellers would greet her with such hostility.

Becoming a Becomer
While Nixie spent most of her time exploring on her own, there were a few Mer that she confided in. One of them was an older female by the name of Coral. She treated Nixie as if she had hatched from her own clutch. Through the years Nixie would always hurry to her side with exciting tales of the adventures she went on. While most Mer thought her interest in the world outside the water was silly, when she went to Coral, she would rest her arms and head in her lap and tell her everything. Coral wouldn’t say much, mostly listening and running webbed fingers through Nixies long tresses when she noticed a sadness in the girls' voice. Sadness seeped into her words when she spoke of land-dwellers. She envied their ability to traverse land with ease and wondered what beautiful sights they saw. Coral thought the girls' obsession with land was dangerous, but wouldn’t reprimand her as most other Mer did without restraint. She knew her girl was hard-headed and strong willed, arguing would only drive her away. However painful the lesson, Nixie would need to learn it on her own.

When Coral was alone with Nixie, she bent to whisper in the girls' ear.
“I have something I want to give you, Nixie. It’s very dangerous, but it will help your dreams be realized.” When the thought first came to mind, years ago, she feared for the girl. There was no doubt in her mind that Nixie would accept her gift, without hesitation, but wondered what it would cost her in the end. Afraid to lose her, she watched her grow and hoped her passion and curiosity would be directed elsewhere. With the passing of time and unfulfilled desire weighing heavily on the girls' spirits and no sign of them being squelched, Coral was left with little choice. Once the preparations were complete, the initiation began.
