Appearance

Rorom appears older than he is, about ten years older, having lived a rough life for the most part.

As a Biqaj, his eyes are always shifting color ranges. His are more a shade of mother of pearl, with an overlapping prismatic sheen to their of their underlying color of pale blue. His hair is prematurely gray for his age, and bleached lighter by the constant sun shining on it from his life spent at sea. He's somewhat stocky in frame, well-fed by all appearances. He is often smiling. As for biometrics, he stands at 6'2" weights 250 lbs.

Concept

Rorom is a simple man, yet he attends to his business with an attention to detail that might seem strange for the normally carefree Biqaj. He's a decent man, always willing to lend aid to those in need. His life is largely dominated by his business as a fisherman. He holds to three Immortals. To Uf'rek, for guidance when lost or at sea, and to Chrien, when danger rears its head in the form of a storm or a combative assailant. He holds a belief that is perhaps heretical, that these two Immortals are inextricable, their fates interwined by the virtue of their opposing domains. Rorom's additional faith in Charmadarst has given rise to a new rationale for his neutrality in the conflict between Chrien and U'frek. While also teaching him the virtues of neutrality and abandoning sentimentality.

History

Birth

Rorom was born at sea, during a great storm, far from the shores of the western continent on a voyage to find new, less dangerous trade lanes to the eastern continent. His mother named him Rorom, which roughly translated means 'in tumult'. Whether this was done in the chaos and pain of childbirth, his father nonetheless adopted the curse as his son's moniker, thinking it to be a strong and respectable name. The storm that threatened them didn't guarantee a future for his son in any case.

The crew members fought valiantly against the furious elements and at the last moment, as a huge wave overtook the boat, mer cohorts of his parents came to the rescue, leading them out of the storm and toward safety. It took much effort to bail out the ship, and eventually they made their way to land. His father remarked to his mother, "He really is Rorom Nji'Ihai. In the tumult, seeking land."

Childhood

He had a good, happy childhood and adolescence. When he wasn't working on the deck of his mother and father's ship, he was occupying his time in mock battles with other crewman's children and scrimshaw while he was alone. He learned much about seafaring, as every Biqaj youth does. But by far, the child's favorite passtime was watching out at calm seas, fishing with pole or net, and seeing the schools of plenty that came up from the deep to be his catch.

At night, there were few enough things to do, so members of the crew huddled around jungle fires and told stories. Rorom was among them when they recounted the stories of their lives. In more intimate settings Rorom was told of his own birth, and the storm that almost swallowed the Kestrel of his parents whole, if it weren't for the intervention of an amiable school of mer.

Adolescence

Rorom did as most male adolescents did at his age, rebelling in small ways and chasing girls and women. Strangely enough, he preferred older women to girls his own age, and found himself teased mercilessly when going after one of the female mariners on his Parents' kestrel.

He continued working at his scrimshaw, learning new patterns and taking inspirations from the sights he was exposed to. The landscapes sighted in the distance, whales flipping their tails out of the water, and a few portraits of mer who allowed him to get close enough to commit their faces to memory.

Young Adulthood

Eventually he grew into a fine young man, albeit one growing gray early for whatever reason. After helping him to finance a sloop of his own to start with, his parents lovingly cast him off at the age of 18. From there, he opted for the easy life at sea, fishing for what he needed to survive, and trading what he could to supplement his nutrition with various citrus fruits and leafy vegetables.

He was content to be alone for a long time in this way, though he often enough scraped the barnacles off his ship and went into port to trade in earnest. Rorom soon found that he loved the give and take of trading with the foreign merchants, especially the ones coming from inland, who prized his salted fish and scrimshaw. He often had an excess of the latter, and so was more than willing to part with a few of his less favorite peices for a trifle or a piece of cheese or fruit. Rorom prized the stories they had to tell also, of adventures inland that they swapped for tales of storms on the seas and waves as tall as a mountain cliff.

Rorom became quite the cook in time, and this became another passtime of his, whenever he had the opportunity to park his sloop close enough to shore to go buccaneering, cooking his meals on an improvised jungle fire.

Mature Adulthood

As he aged into a mature adult, Rorom became more withdrawn, not for fear or lack of desire, but more out of interest in the solitude that the open ocean afforded him. He liked to clam and fish with net and spear. It wasn't an eventful lifestyle, but it granted him some contentment.

Sombran Mark Story

2nd of Cylus 719

The hustle and bustle of the Earth market was a comfort to Rorom as he traveled along those well-trod thoroughfares. Even better, Noille has consented to let him tag along on her trip to the market, to hawk the goods he sold her. The smell of fresh fish, oysters, clams, and shrimp wafted to the heavens. There were a good number of people who found the smell objectionable, but Rorom never had. Fish of all kinds smelled like food and comfort and home.

”Oysters, clams, cockles, and FISH!” Noille yelled as she pushed her wheel barrow. Rorom tarried behind and to the side, watchful of the lass as she went about her business.

Customers came hither and thither in droves, driven by the sound of hawksters advertising this good or that. Rorom preferred the down-to-earth fare of the Earth Quarter, to that of the Glass. Besides which, his produce was not always well received up there. It seemed the higher one travelled the social ladder, the more sensitive the nose and tongue of those that dwelt there.

”Clams! Oysters!” Rorom shouted along with her, as he moved beside Noille, ”Fish and Cockles! Muscles, Scallops, Lobster even!” He found it boring to shout the same old phrases over again as Noille tended to. But perhaps doing it for so long wared on one’s sense of creativity.

”Oy! Boss, yer gon’ outdo my pitch…” She said with a wink. Rorom just smiled at her as he waved for people to come in and see the goods. He really did like Noille, although she drove a hard bargain for his produce. He’d almost come to see her as more of a daughter. Perhaps he’d be able to fix her up with young Eairok, he did notice his apprentice making eyes with her…

They travelled the market in this way for several breaks, and finally came down to their very last few oysters, plus a large salmon.

Noille smirked, ”Maybe we can make a party of this last parts of the catch?” She asked.

Rorom was about to agree, when he saw a well-dressed man, in lavish robes approaching them. Rorom held up a hand, stopping Noille from pushing the barrow. ”Hello, master. I don’t suppose you’d like to try some oysters, maybe some salmon?”

The man in robes shrugged, and looked as if he’d be interrupted in his stride. He went on his way past the barrow. But Rorom persisted. ”Sir! Where are my manners, I’m Rorom Nji’Ihai, expert fisherman. I’ve the finest catch in the Earth Quarter, perhaps all the city.”

The robed man let out a sigh, obviously used to this sort of interjection on a daily basis. How could he not? The man’s clothes looked to be made of spun gold. Rorom was careful not to touch his robes. Despite his sudden boldness, he felt like just looking at the man’s robes might devalue them by a factor of his entire wealth. ”Oysters are sometimes said to contain pearls.” Rorom said. ”And pearls from Lake Lovalus are said to shine with the brilliance of Ilaren’s gaze.” Rorom bowed his head before the man, and took some of the oysters in his hands. There, he held them out before him, and showed the rich man.

Another sigh from the robed man, who then introduced himself in a disinterested way. ”Well met Master Nji’Ihai. I’m known simply as Nels. I’m a jeweler by trade. I’m intrigued by this claim of pearls of yours. Do you happen to have found any in the latest batch?”

Rorom froze for a moment, suddenly caught in the throat. Perhaps he’d overpromised. He hated leading customers astray. ”I have seen these pearls, and they do fetch a nice price, perhaps a king’s ransom when set into jewels. But only one have I seen in two arcs. And that one I sold.”

Noille was ribbing Rorom at this point, but Rorom ignored her, waving her aside. ”But! I haven’t gone clamming in a good few seasons… It’s possible that one of these pearls, however small, may be inside one of these Oysters?”

”Hah.” Said Nels. ”Selling me a game of shells, are you?” He grinned broadly, ”That’s almost too rich to pass up.”

”You’ll play then? A nel for each oyster? Do let me know how you’ll make out.” Rorom smirked, feeling quite struck by the situation he’d stumbled his way into.

A session of bartering and negotiation followed, after which the man agreed to pay a gold nel and five silvers for each oyster. Excited that he’d managed to offload the rest of the bivalves, Rorom quickly accepted the nels, and bid Nels good day.

Noille and he wandered back to the ship, to turn in and share the last of their catch with their shipmates.

The next morning, Rorom woke up in his hammock, to hear the sound of footfalls on the deck of The Bird. When he saw that Eairok and Mirq were there in the bunkhouse, he sprung out of the hammock and rushed to the deck, fearing some mischief was afoot.

Instead, he found Nels, clad in a different yet no less stunning set of attire. He laughed uproariously at the look on Rorom’s face as he emerged from the bunks. With one motion, he threw a single, small object toward Rorom. ”All the nels I gave you last night for that one Pearl.”

Rorom looked into his hand, and was surprised to find the shining Pearl he’d described. So it wasn’t some fiction he’d concocted in a fit of creative bartering, but the rainbow pearls were real?!

He stammered, and then reached for the coin pouch that the man had handed him the day before, and placed it into Nels’ hands with a bow.

”By the by, the name is Nels Charmadarst.” He said with a wink, slapping the back of Rorom’s hand. When the man’s hand removed from Rorom’s, a mark of a nel was left on his hand. Copper in color. And when he looked up, Nels was nowhere to be found.

He went back to the bunk, stunned at this development. Had he truly been marked by an immortal? And for such a paltry trade. When he opened the hand that’d been marked, the pearl was gone as well. All that remained, was Charmadarst’s favor.

Powers

Pocket Change The first ability of Sombran is to guarantee his marked benefits from his prosperous domain. A Sombran will find that throughout the Cycle they work, they will find an extra 10 wealth points in value. For seasonal wages, a Sombran always has an additional 10 wealth points added in. This is often found through serendipity, whether through a tavern goer dropping their purse, to loose nels on the street, to unexpected windfalls in business transactions. Sombran always, even those without a job, manage to get along better with coin than almost any other.

Grifter's Eye While somewhat specific, most who earn Sombran’s mark certainly would not dare complain. Grifter’s eye sees through ruse at any level...so long as the subject of deception is theft. If someone has the goal of stealing a Sombran’s property or profits, no amount of talking or special magical abilities will affect the marked. The Sombran can see to the heart of the deception instantly. In addition, when any property a Sombran owns is taken by a thief or with the intent to steal, the Sombran is instantly aware of it, no matter how far away they are from the object in question. While this ability considers any item that the Blessed obtained through honest means, whether buying, creating, or crafting, anything that the merchant has stolen from another person will not be protected by this ability until it has been in the Blessed's possession for an arc. While not strong enough to pierce powerful illusions or be used for any other situation but a Sombran’s personal wealth, Grifter’s eyes is an invaluable tool for merchants looking to protect their goods from thieves. However, this ability only applies to things of purely merchantile or monetary value to the Blessed. Things of personal value are not so protected, as such attachments are a violation of Chamadarst's Neutrality.

Merchant's Skills The character is granted an extra three skill points which may be spent only on the following skills: Business Management, Discipline, Investigation, Detection, Mathematics, Persuasion, or Glassblowing. Any skill points granted by this Mark can break the 250 (or 100 if fast track) point cap on skills. Within these skills, the points may be spent how the pc chooses.

Pass Unnoticed Neutrality is a wonderful thing. It allows merchants to trade in war zones, generally to both sides. It lets the banker enforce peace and calm in his bank. It allows the glass maker to create beautiful works of art while the world rages around them. This ability takes that to an extreme, however, as it allows the Blessed to pass through any conflict without either side noticing them. However, this ability only works so long as the Blessed remains absolutely neutral. Favoring a side of a conflict will render this ability null. It also doesn't prevent the Blessed from any of the side effects of a conflict, such as thrown pots, boiling oil, or stray arrows.

Glass Touch Glass is a beautiful thing, capable of being formed into almost any shape. However, it is also a brittle, frail substance, and relatively easily broken. This ability allows the Blessed to impart that frailness into any single substance they touch. This ability only works on non-organic substances, and the Blessed has to touch it with their bare hands. As such, the ability is almost purely defensive, and has generally been found not work well on weapons that are actively being swung at them, as those who have attempted it have usually found that it's hard to concentrate on using your Blessing powers when your hands have just been severely damaged. Furthermore, while this ability imparts the relative frailness of glass to any single object the Blessed touches, the blessed is still required to break the item itself, and which can still be difficult with items of sufficient thickness.

Isolated Calm Those Blessed by Chamadarst will frequently find themselves alone, separated from those who would normally be their peers. However, rather than being a curse, those who wield Sombran find this to be rather useful. Isolated Calm boosts the focus and discipline of the Blessed whenever they are alone, allowing them achieve things they might otherwise find difficult to manage. This manifests in several ways, all of them beneficiary to the Blessed. They are all but immune to mundane distractions, the chattering of people on the street outside, dripping water, wind blowing through the room, and things of that nature. In addition, they able to more easily resist the mind clouding effects of things like drugs, magics or blessings. Finally, they'll find it a bit easier to parse business or crafting matters, amounting to a 15 EXP skill boost to any skill that falls under those umbrellas.

Rorom's Clan
Fortuna
Name: Fortuna

Description: A white mantled albatross, caught when it was injured in the water, hit by the Crag Dodger. Rorom nursed it back to health as best he could, but could not do anything for it's wing as he hadn't the medical knowledge. Eventually he made land fall at Ne'Haer, and met with a doctor who administered his abilities to animals who felt confident he could help the poor beast. In exchange for a large haul of scrimshaw and salted, smoked fish, he agreed to heal Fortuna.

The beast's wing was broken. Rorom had to see a healer to restore the bird to health and flight worthiness. After the beast was given first aid, he gave the albatross a month for recovery with good nutrition and care. After that month had passed, Rorom awoke to find the bird had departed his ship, nowhere in sight. At first he panicked, but then supposed the bird must have flown off.

After checking all around the ship with his naked eyes and then spyglass for distance viewing, he determined it had flown off. What wasn't expected, was that the bird decided it wanted to stick around the Crag Dodger, landing on the prow of the ship as it sailed farther from land, and so became something of an unofficial mascot of the Mariner's Ship. Rorom has been glad for its company ever since.

Appearance/Biometrics: The older man was missing a right leg, and had a left hand that curled, tensed into a perpetual fist. He's often seen to be smoking a pipe with fresh leaf, and smells of rich mohagany. His left eye is made of glass, the color of turquoise. His right leg was a wooden one. Despite all this, he seems to get around easily enough.

Personality: An old salt that is well accustomed to giving advice to younger sailors. Far from fearful, superstitious, or close-minded, he actually has a very accepting view of things other sailors would consider unlucky or out of the ordinary. He's an inspiring sight, having survived many wrecks of ships and battles at sea. Other sailors tend to rally to his great sense of determination.

Backstory: His history is murky and hard to get a read on, but from all he says and the few stories he tells of his injuries (which is a rare enough occurrence) it's evident that he's the survivor of many a wreck at sea. He seems to have a particular respect and mingling aversion to large beasts of the sea, but also a great base of knowledge about what makes a ship good and sturdy.

An air-headed demeanor hides a mind that is always working and observing, and one would be careful not to presume that her light nature delineates a gullible person. She's a keen observer of a situation, and able to adapt well to evolving circumstances

Backstory: Malmada spent much of the time before the Raionan were sequestered in Emea travelling on ships as oft on land, lending her skills as a seamstress to the craft of sail-making and maintenance thereof. She spent much of her time among Biqaj crews, and has a healthy respect of the ocean, both Chrien and U'frek in equal measure. One in caution, the other in affection.

Since reemerging from the slumber imposed upon her kind, she has arrived as eager to resume her travels. In Havardr she will join Rorom's crew in the hopes that they will give her the opportunity to stretch her sealegs and also map more of the world that she hasn't seen, and also ensure their sails are full.

Appearance/Biometrics: A small (4'7" tall as of 723th arc) human child, she has dark hair, dark eyes, and scars along her arms from an arcane accident.

Personality: Dana is quiet and often speaks in nonsensical nothings to those around her, and is oft as not known to use animal noises to interact with humans, a side-effect of having affinity for animals in general. Still, she's not crazy, and is perfectly lucid. She just isn't one to open up with those she doesn't know or doesn't trust, and uses this veneer of insanity to scare away people who would try to wring information out of her.

She loves animals of all kinds and stripes, even some of the more dangerous ones. She had a large creature among her totems until it was destroyed during the rescue mission that saw her absconded from the authorities by Rorom.
She finds animals of all kinds fascinating, and feels more at home in their company than that of more or less civilized folks.

Backstory: How such a young child came to be a Becomer at a tender age is a mystery, but in truth she was being carried by her mother while the mother was initiated, unknown to the mother. Instead of being destroyed by the process, the child was similarly initiated, and became one of the few mortals to be born with a spark.

Her parentage is unknown, but presumed to have been either separated, killed, or sequestered at the Facility for Retrospective Analysis before that institute became defunct. It's thought that she too was a subject there, but somehow escaped and into the wider wilderness, which prompted the 'rescue'.

The rescue led to her being taken in by Rorom, after fleeing from the Videnese authorities upon discovery that she was a mage, and would likely not be treated fairly or kindly by the authorities of Viden, who cannot abide the use of magic.

Appearance/Biometrics: Long hair the color of pale seafoam, that flows to the top of her hips. Her eyes are black, while her irises are bright yellow. She has several fins along her body, one dorsal at the small of her back and two ventral at the sides of her hips. Her tail is comparatively short among her kind, around 6'7", while her torso is around 3' long. Her scale coloration has typical countershading in cool shades of blue, green, and purple, dark on the back and light on the belly. This coloration extends to the rest of her body, her fins, and her face, which has a small button nose and full, purple lips. Her teeth are, of course, pointed and sharp as most mer.

Personality: An elusive and shy mermaid, she was cast adrift from the tidewaters when chaos descended upon Rynmere, which extended toward the treatment of its mer population. She enjoys singing and has often been at fault for many sailors crashing against the rocks and shoals as they try to find the source of the heavenly voice. She nevertheless doesn't mean much harm to land-dwellers, an anomaly among the TIdewhispers, she is not as much of an elitist as the rest of them, having been born the second generation from Tidewater mer. On the contrary, she is curious about land dwellers.

Backstory: She was cast adrift from the Tidewhispers when Rynmere was left in chaos. Making her way east, toward Scalvoris and earning her food by stalking fisher vessels, picking off the excess of their catch. She's second-generation mer from the Tidewhispers, and as such isn't a full member of that clan. Even so, she's sentimentally hung onto the name, as it pleases her to be associated with such an impressive and noble line of mer.

Personality: An old yet largely ignorant old salt. Not a very affable person, it takes a few drinks to get him to warm up enough for him to get even close to friendly with his crew mates.

Backstory: Bones doesn't talk much about his past, but rumors of encounters with strange cannibal tribes, and misadventures in the jungles of Athart persist around him. Yet whenever asked about his past, he tends to spit over his shoulder, and give the canned response of 'Whatever's behind me.". Personality: Packy is young, and still developing Igelak. He is very curious about the world and delights in the discovery of new fishes and new methods of finding or catching fish. He often engages in pole-fishing, as a matter of sport, trying to catch the largest fish he can, and keeping tabs of his largest in a small ledger. He enjoys the company of other mortals, and enjoys learning all he can of their experiences.

Backstory: There's very little to tell of the very young Igelak, as he latched onto Craus, having been discarded or lost from his school of Igelak, while they migrated from Melrath. From then, he learned as he clung to Craus, and took a shining in particular to the practice and art of fishing and hunting. He enjoyed life at sea generally, and took to swimming and seafaring easily. When he grew large enough to stand on his own, he swiftly became an asset to the crew he was serving under his father Craus. Until the ship was destroyed in the pirate attacks of 723 in Rebirth, in Scalvoris.

Unknown to many, it was Packy who fished Craus out of the waters when their ship was destroyed.

Style: Plain and drab clothing usually. Sometimes will wear a colorful sash, jacket, or shirt.

Personality: An introverted and introspective man. Rarely given to frivolity or mirth, but for the discovery of a suitably amazing land or oceanic feature that he hasn't experienced before. The wonder of discovery is really the main thing that captivates his attention and interest, other than his adoptive child, Packy Fisher, an igelak that clutched onto him once upon a time, on a voyage from the seas of Melrath, having been abandoned by its tribe. Apart from that, he rarely takes part in the gambling and general time-wasting activities that occupy many of the others of his crew mates. Bit of a tea totaller.

Backstory: He shares little of his personal history. It's not well known that he learned the arts of Navigation and Cartography in Raelia, the capitol of Melrath. There, he learned much about the way the oceans behave and how to navigate it, as well as the major land features of the continents.

While he hasn't been everywhere or seen everything, not by a longshot, he is well travelled and it takes more than sight of a impressive ship to capture his amazement. Still, his voyages along with those of his adopted child, have landed him in Almund of all places, where he's remained stranded at since the Pirate attacks of Rebirth destroyed the ship he'd been serving upon.

He almost always wears a large hat with many feathers in it. He also carries his greatsword in a massive wooden scabbard wherever he goes, calling it his 'walking stick'.

Personality: Self styled with the surname 'Fancy', Parleg is an ostentatious individual who enjoys showing off his strength and endurance in boastful contests aboard the ship, often making a show of pulling up the smaller anchors and fishing nets on his own. He has a penchant for Biqaj females, and it is this that led him to pursue a life at sea, and how he ended up in a tavern in Almund, waiting for the right crew to hire him.

Backstory: There's not too much to tell of Parleg's history, being a young Lotharro. But as he grew to his full measure, he quickly gained in combat skill what he'd taken for granted in his physical gifts. Growing up in a small Lotharro Tribe, he grew disgusted early on with their barbaric way of life. It didn't take much convincing before a mercenary from Etzos roped him into their band, where he was afforded more wealth than he'd scratched togtether in all the time raiding with his clan.

He grew to admire the finer things in life, big swords, fancy clothes, and above all, an abiding passion for the pursuit of biqaj ladies. It was this passion that led him to move on from the mercenary life, and take odd jobs across the seas of Idalos, usually aboard Biqaj vessels. It often enough got him into trouble with the more clannish vessels, that were jealous of their women.

That was how he ended up moored more or less in Almund, waiting for a crew to hire a marine.

Anything: Her lack of a surname is owed to the fact that she never knew her parents, she was raised in an orphanage. She had been working at a tavern until she got tired of being groped by drunken sailors, layabouts, and fools. She ran into Rorom by chance, when he happened to be attending the tavern she worked at. He noted her shrewd negotiation skills when dealing with difficult customers, not allowing those whose tab had gone overdue to leave.

He's not at all handsome, but with a certain trampy appeal to him that women and sometimes men with lower standards tend to attract to.

The clothes he wears tend to be secondhand, likely stolen from a line or groped off of some corpse, ill-fitting in places and held up by suspenders to compensate. He favors long coats and trinkets to decorate them with. His prized coat, that he wears when out on the town to impress the lasses, is a military-style naval longcoat. Completing the article is a set of stolen valor on it's breast, and attached to the tassels and chevrons.

Bio:

Acciona is a debased creature that lives in a cistern within the Underground area of Ne’haer, an outcast from her tribe, the Meerabelard. The reasons for her exiles include but are not limited to the fact that she refused to follow along with a Reiksah, she practiced profane magics in order to impersonate others of her tribe, and just generally being an unpleasant mer to associate with.

She is a faustian creature, and plies a trade of flesh for knowledge from people who are unfortunate enough to seek her out in her cistern. Often she will ask a piece of the supplicant’s body, for use in some sort of ritual or perhaps for the purposes of incorporating them into a totem. In other cases, she will accept living sacrifices of live specimen in exchange for knowledge.

For those wishing to learn the ways of the arcane from her, she requires no less than a piece of the supplicant, as well as a significantly useful creature she can use to improve her own forms.

It is for the reason of her greed for limbs and body parts, in addition to the obvious as a category 1 mer, that she is known by many simply as the Lady of Limbs.

Appearance: Image

Relationship: It’s rare enough that a Biqaj will treat with a mer with any sort of respect. Rarer still is it that a Biqaj will go out of their way to please the mer and placate them. The Lady of Limbs has known of Rorom for some time, and is aware of his treatment of the mer people. That he always makes offerings of fish and trinkets and nels to the people of the deep. That he’d saved an entire school of mer from going astray by tacking them onto his net and allowing them to tow along with him.

This deference is intriguing to the Lady of Limbs. As such, she wishes to learn more about Rorom, and thus has put out a daisy chain of information and enticements to lure him into her lair, so that she might meet him in person.

When she learns that he is returned to Ne’haer, she will no doubt make a move to draw him in. From there, it’s anyone’s guess, but there’s a good chance she’ll decide to take him on as an apprentice.
