Pepper's childhood had been fairly sheltered, and quietly comfortable. She's never felt unloved, her brothers enjoy teasing her but are quietly protective, she's fairly close to her mum and her dad tries his best not to spoil her rotten. Yet as she left childhood behind, she started feeling that she no longer quite fit into this happy picture.

Pepper had enjoyed a slight notoriety among other children her age for her quiet refusal to fall in with the conventions of the group. Even then, her sense of self had been strong, she knew her likes and dislikes fairly well, and didn't often feel envious or competitive. She was also comfortable trusting her intuition and judgement, though they had not been infallible. Slowly, she also began to develop a deeply private side, and though she continued to welcome opportunities to play and interact with others her age, she'd started to realise that it's better to limit most interactions to surface level. She had always been quite curious and imaginative and her interests ranged wide. However she started to notice that sharing these rarely, if ever, led to good results socially.

In 714, when Pepper was 11, a child she used to play with ended up lost in the woods and was eventually found dead. This was Pepper's first personal brush with tragedy and she somehow ended up blaming herself for a part in it. Her imagination and empathy twisted the guilt and grief into nightmares that kept getting worse and the strain led to a bad bout of fever. Five trials later the fever broke and Pepper emerged with the blessing of Nyvora granted to her.

Pepper kept the mark secret but it made the feeling of not fitting in a lot worse. Additionally the whole experience had left other, more subtle imprints on her personality. She started to fear losing people important to her, and getting lost herself. She went through a short phase of always wanting to know where all her family was. She learnt to be a bit more cautious when exploring the woods, and she started filling her journal with maps. She began with simple maps but with practice and experience her ability to commit larger amounts of information to paper grew. She also started to note down all dreams and experiences related to dreamwalking. These along with the journal that served as her sketchbook became her most prized possessions. The discipline of putting things down on paper slowly fanned her curiosity to a blaze.

It wasn't so much that she wanted adventure, rather her thirst for knowing had been growing bigger than her small village existence could quench. If challenged she'd agree that wanting to know everything about everything was simultaneously foolish, dangerous, and impossible. Yet every bit she learnt only made it more clear that there was a whole lot more she didn't.

There were also more practical concerns. Her family was well off enough by Stormland standards, but everyone pulled their weight and then some. Pepper certainly helped in the vineyards, or the orchards and at home with the chores but it was time to think about the future. She found the growing and tending of plants interesting enough, but then she found most things interesting. She couldn't imagine tending to grape crops or some such all her life.

She found making things a lot more interesting and fulfilling. True she wasn't much good at most of the crafting work she'd tried (apart from sketching). Yet. But she was sure she could be. Pepper knew one of her failings was getting bored and moving to something new. She felt crafting offered enough avenues for her to be creative as well as to switch things enough to not get bored. But she couldn't really try all of it at home.

In the wider world, there was possibility, magic was free and how could she not want to see more, know more, do more? She needed to leave the safety of her nest, she needed to fly.

Pepper got her chance when she accompanied her family for a short trip to the city in Vhalar of 717. They all stayed at her uncle's, and Pepper broached wanting to move to the city and explore some options that she could pursue as a profession. There was some amount of instinctive refusal, especially from her father, but the Farrows reluctantly agreed to consider it when Reyna's brother Jemyr and his wife Saryu spoke up in Pepper's support. They offered to host Pepper whenever she wanted to try the city life, they certainly had more than enough space. This would possibly be the best way for her to learn independence while still having support to fall back on.

Over the next month, Pepper worked (more or less patiently) at overcoming her family's objections and calming their concerns. Finally they agreed and Pepper moved to Rharne at the beginning of Ashan 718, promising she'd mind her manners in her new home and not waste this opportunity away.

[anchor=personality]Personality[/anchor]
Pepper's personality is woven from a lot of seemingly contradictory traits. She's intelligent, curious and likes to learn. Essentially honest and optimistic, she is prone to taking people at their word and can be somewhat naive. Thankfully a kind of gut instinct has warned her about truly bad apples so not too much harm has been done. She's distinctly introverted, needing to spend a good amount of time away from gatherings of people where she's expected to participate, and had found the woods a good place to escape to. Yet when animated by interest, she can charm her listeners by her vivacity and enthusiasm. A dreamer and a seeker, she's very happy to live in the realms of the mind. But for all her flights of fancy, she's strongly rooted in the facts of what she thinks is actually possible and doable. Often coming across as somewhat aloof, she hides a sensitive soul that is empathetic to those in trouble and protective of those in her care.

She's capable of working with surprising focus and determination on things, but equally capable of abandoning once cherished projects. She's direct, often embarrassingly so, and will often blurt out things she's been thinking. She's fairly creative and likes to write and sketch. (see origins for more). She's also pragmatic and unexpectedly objective about the quality of her work and knows that most of her skills are barely at the novice level. She can be very snappish and even whiny when feeling frustrated or thwarted. Instinctively getting all defensive and prickly in the face of criticism doesn't help either, though it's worst when the criticism is from people doesn't entirely trust.

The most important thing however is that she has a very strong sense of self, happy to move to her own beat. She isn't easily swayed by the opinions of the crowd, and quietly prefers making up her own mind about things.

Ever since she got the blessing of Nyvora, she's also started being afraid of losing people important to her and getting lost herself. Lately she's been getting restless and eager to get out of the small village settlement and actually explore what she's good for. She wants to direct her energies and focus in areas that suit her natural talents, and are interesting to her.

When you meet Pepper, you'll understand why eyes are said to be the windows to the soul. Her wide, deep blue green eyes faithfully mirror her every mood and passing feeling. Her gaze can be a little too direct, but is rarely judgemental.

Pepper is a little over 5 feet tall, with a slim build just recently past the awkward graceless stage. Prone to gesture with her hands, she easily gets to fidgeting if restless or uninterested. However when absorbed by some activity or thoughts, she physically calms down, with all excess energy seemingly grounded .

Her hair's the darkest possible shade of chocolate, with faint undertones of honey, and falls to her mid back in soft, glossy waves. Pepper frequently keeps it braided or in a low bun when busy with anything requiring focus or getting messy. With a clear creamy skin and an oval face, she's a pretty enough child-woman, likely to grow into a lovely young woman in a few arcs, though for now how she looks is pretty far down her list of concerns.

Pepper is usually dressed in a plain light coloured shirt in soft material along with dark colours pants. She'll add a few layers, or a coat depending on the weather. She often walks around wearing a waxed canvas backpack which keeps her sketchbooks and other supplies.

Pepper's the youngest child and only daughter of Darryl and Reyna Farrow. The Farrows run a vineyard and winery near Mistral Village, and are comfortably off by the standards of their neighbours. They have three children, Max (currently 22), Jeremy (currently 19) and Pepper (currently 14).

Darryl's family has lived in the Stormlands for generations, though Darryl was the first of his family to notice the suitability of the soil and climate near Mistral Village. He bought a tract of land bordering the Mistral Woods as a young man, and today runs a fairly successful vineyard and winery. Reyna and he met in Rharne a few years after he started the vineyard on one of his many business trips to the city. Reyna was a half Biqaj and her family had moved to Rharne only a handful of years back. The two fell in love and got married in due course of time.

Reyna's older brother Jemyr eventually returned to Rharne from his travels and established The Turning Wheel Inn which he runs along with his wife and family. The two siblings (and the families) are fairly close, even though Jemyr chose the Biqaj side of his heritage and Reyna the human side.

Pepper's brothers also work full time at the family business. Max is being groomed to handle the business aspects of running the vineyard, while Jeremy is more interested in the vintning and brewing aspect of it. Pepper hasn't shown any interest in the business and seems more interested in branching out on her own. The brothers are quietly protective of Pepper and she's as close to them as their age gap permits. Max is the one most willing to tell her about the wider world, Jeremy prefers to tease her and occasionally accompanies her on her small adventures.

Miret (Fairy NPC)

Race: Fairy

Appearence: Though it's perhaps more striking than one'd expect, Miret's body is wreathed in ethereal, wispy flame. Five inches from head to toe in her default form and with a wingspan of twice her length, every bit of her body glows a fiery red to go with the apparent flames that dance around her. She has a vaguely humanoid shape, that of a young adult woman, with long hair flowing around her head and following the same theme of the rest of her. Though the flames dance as if real, they emit no heat and do not burn when touched. They are purely energy.
Personality: Though her appearence would suggest something like a spitfire personality, Miret is a gentle spirit. Firm, but gentle. She's protective of her charge's personal goals and feelings and does her best to act as a font of confidence when Pepper needs it the most, a motivator and driving force when everything else fails. She takes the approach of an elder sister to most interpersonal matters and is quick and effective in delivering advice and cautioning against behaviours or relationships that, to her, would threaten Pepper's well being. As a rule, she is supportive and warm, though unafraid of adapting and taking to harsh or unconventional methods if it's in the best interest of her charge.

Relationship to PC: Guardian

Anything: She is assigned to Pepper as a Guardian by virtue of her Nyvora mark, and cannot be seen by anyone who does not also possess it unless in a Dreamscape, where she may or may not choose to make her presence known. Additionally, she does not have a native language of her own, but shares all the language proficiencies of the Marked she is tasked with protecting.

Abilities:

Merging:
Trademark ability as granted by Nyvora, enabling her charge to merge with her senses and control her movements directly as a sort of remote viewing, taking advantage of her ability to move where her charge cannot. She can only move within the same city as her charge, however, without overextending and cancelling the ability automatically. (This ability unlocks once "Silent Guardian" has been acquired.)

Telempathy:
Her primary means for communication in Idalos, limited to the Marked. While she can perceive the world (that cannot perceive her, in turn), she cannot interact with it in any way nor utilize any physical means of communication. As such, she communicates solely through telepathic and empathic bursts to her charge, broadcasting thoughts, emotions and images, often in short messages at a time. This restriction applies only in Idalos. In Emea, she may speak normally, in addition to telempathic communication.

Phasing:
As a non-physical creature, she is not physically limited by objects or obstacles in Idalos and may freely pass through solid objects and even creatures and humanoids. She cannot physically interact with anything while in Idalos. Physical creatures and humanoids may feel a pleasant tickle when she passes through them, but that is the extent of her influence on Idalos.

This NPC may benefit from normal rules for Personal NPCs in increasing her Skills every season, but the PC does not need to pay upkeep for it. It is loyal to the PC and will stay with it for as long as it possesses the Nyvora mark.

Attitude towards Immortals

Pepper is more spiritual than religious. She believes that the immortals are merely very powerful beings, and that power is no indicator of goodness. She believes it is far more important to develop a good conscience and act to the best of your ability. Blindly following anyone, even an immortal, is being irresponsible. Humans and other races have been given the ability to resist Immortals for a reason. She's perfectly willing to follow an immortal she thinks is overall on the side of good (or at least is likely to do the least harm), but blind devotion isn't really her style. Nyvora : Jesine

Sanctuary

Gives the user the ability to protect their own dreams and anyone involved in them from Kielik's influence (Nightmares), and most native predators of Emea. The protection extends to all other individuals that should chance upon the dream, though the marked is at liberty to shut out or expel unwanted visitors at their discretion. Only those possessing a mark from Kielik of a higher caliber than the dreamer's Nyvora level, particularly potent entities in Emea or Kielik himself can override this protection. Dream threads can only be marked as "closed" if started by a PC with this ability.

Dream Seeker

Anyone known to the blessed individual in the living world can be tracked down in Emea. Once found, the seeker has the ability to enter their dream, alter the dreamer's dreamscape subtly and guide them into a state of lucid dreaming, where interactions, conversations, and the dream itself will be remembered by the dreamer. With this power comes the ability to stop outsiders from entering the same dream (as if the other dreamer had also possessed the Sanctuary ability), making it a secure place to share information.

Pepper considers Jesine a force for the good, and what better proof for that exists than Sanctuary. The very first ability Nyvora granted her allowed her to secure her own dreams and also act as a refuge for other troubled dreamers. Her devotion is a mix of 'living by the domain' by consciously unfettering her imagination and placing a lot of importance on dreams, whether the ones that come while asleep or the ones that give your life a direction and a purpose. She couldn't really put any of this in words, but to her it feels like the act of dreaming, choosing worthy aspects from these to follow, and the act of trying to pursue them to the best of your ability is itself a form of devotion. Other than that she's been trying her best to understand Emea so she can be a better help to Jesine there. To this end she jots down all her thoughts and understandings about Dreamwalking and Emea in one of her journals.

Pepper lives with her uncle and aunt in Rharne. Jemyr and Saryu Vy'Gawar run The Turning Wheel, an inn situated in the Glass Quarter. She has a 150 sq feet room to herself on the second floor towards the back of the building.

A single bed stands flush against the wall by the door, with a small dresser and vanity next to it. The opposite wall has a medium sized window glazed with good glass, and a small door that opens on to a shaded balcony. The balcony is shared by another room, and looks over the inn's garden. A student's desk and chair are placed under the window to get the best light possible. The wall common to the other room has a fireplace in the middle with a wide wooden shelf over the mantle. This holds items like a waterskin, toiletry items, eating utensils and a tinderbox. On it's far side is a built in wardrobe, which holds both Pepper's clothes and other items of importance etc. The other side of the fireplace has a few hooks in the wall for hanging things.

Gift Giver : Pepper gave a gift to the forest she will find that the local Tunawa have given her a gift in return. On her wrist is a bracelet made of intertwined tiny purple flowers. These flowers never fade or change with the seasons and remain as fresh and as beautiful as the trial she was given the bracelet.

I Remember You : Because she was remembered by the Eldwyn of Mistral Wood Pepper has been blessed by the forest itself. Because of this Pepper is now being followed by a creature of the forest that’s terribly curious about her. (You may pick one animal native to the woodland to be Pepper’s pet. Please contact me with your choice. The choice has been deferred for the time being, the pet will be chosen soon :) )

Finding Your Way : Because of her natural navigational prowess the local Tunawa left Pepper a small gift in her pocket. It’s a lovely brass compass! There is a strange inscription on the back that reads “Does the walker choose the path or the path the walker?”

The Wisdom of Peace : Because Pepper choose not to use the harmful effects of the iron pipe she will find that forest creatures within Rharne are always friendly and approachable around her. Skittish creatures such as deer will not flee from her and birds will readily eat out of her hands.

Mistral Reward : Grandma Iris awards you 200 gold nel for helping end the chaos within Mistral Wood.

Green Touch : When she was blessed by the Eldwyn, Pepper gained a strange new ability. Plant life now flourishes around her. When she tends to a garden, the fruits and vegetables will be bigger and more robust than normal. Anything she harvests will last twice as long before spoiling as if she infuses fruits and vegetables with a strange vigor. If she touches a flower bud it will bloom within the break. She will begin to notice when she touches seemingly dead and dying plants that they immediately begin to recover within the next two breaks. Her ability isn’t always obvious as many of the phenomena can be attributed to chance or luck, but it will become clear in time that plant life becomes more vigorous, bountiful and beautiful after a single touch.
