Appearance

Kulbreck Gedain is a 47-arc Blacksmith and Carpenter. At 6'4" he stands with a slight stoop from many years of working over an anvil. His mane of silver shoulder length hair and matching silver beard gives him the appearance of wisdom that people take for granted. His face is tanned from the sun of the Hotlands where he was born, and from years in front of a blacksmith forge. His ice blue eyes have taken on a permanent squint from that heat of both the sun and forge fire. He is well muscled because of his profession and is very strong with both left and right hands. He usually wears brown leather breeches or trousers with a gray or black sleeveless or short-sleeved heavy shirt and black leather boots and is rarely without his hammer.

Personality

He tries to maintain a gruff public exterior to most people, but he has a soft spot for children (especially those who have been bullied). He tries to keep his private life to himself and doesn't like to express his opinions or emotions freely. He is a perfectionist with his iron and woodworking. He has been known to destroy near perfect works and start anew because of almost imperceptible errors in the workmanship. This has produced a double edged sword as half of his customers appreciate his dedication and the other half resent this as capriciousness or stalling for more time.

Character History

Kulbreck Gedain was born and raised in Nashaki to his mother, a renowned gem cutter, and his father, a master Blacksmith. They lived a happy and prosperous life as descendants of the original families that founded Qi'Ora until Kulbreck's father was falsely accused of theft by a rival Craftsman. Ten years as a forced slave at the hands of the Qi’Ora master craftsman, Nololo Odim’meei, was absolutely life shattering to Kulbreck.

Odim’meei claimed that Kulbreck’s father, Kennendur, had stolen a precious work of metal art from him. In truth, Kennendur had crafted the piece on his own and Odim’meei became jealous that Kennendur’s work was a more beautiful work than his own, a true Qi’Oran. He made a false claim, complete with bribes, to the city Judges of the supposed theft and Kennendur was immediately arrested. No Qi’Oran would admit that an ordinary human could be as skillful as they.

It was an open and shut case. The courts gave the entire Gedain family to Odim’meei as slaves, including all their possessions, wealth and business. Fourteen relatives, mother, father, brother, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a single lifelong customer who came to his father’s defense, was made a slave.

To add insult to injury Kulbreck was forced to continue his father’s work as a blacksmith and carpenter for Odim’meei’s business. He never considered himself as talented as his father but he had always done top notch work. Odim’meei rejected almost everything Kulbreck made for miniscule, even imagined infractions. This caused Kulbreck to become obsessive in his craft working longer and harder than any other slave in the sweltering forge to improve his skills, strength and speed.

After several years Kulbreck met one of Odim’meei’s daughters, Yie'aza. They became fast friends and he soon fell in love with the beautiful Qi'Oran. After a few years she convinced Kulbeck that she could buy his freedom from her father with the idea to leave with and marry him. In her bid for his freedom, Yie'aza kept her love for Kulbreck a secret from her father. Nololo agreed, not knowing of their love, with the condition that Kulbreck never return to Nashaki.

Upon gaining his freedom they packed their belongings and set out together for another city. Odim'meei was not happy when he learned of this perceived insult and secretly arranged for his daughter to be returned to him. She was accidentally killed in the botched kidnapping and Nololo blamed Kulbreck for her death. Kulbreck left Nashaki bitter and broken hearted. He took the prized hammer given to him by his father and, leaving everything he ever knew, set off for a better land. A land with promise.
