The truest test is when we cannot,
when we cannot see...
If theologians are correct,
A Plan implies an Architect:
A God-built maze would be, I'm sure,
The Universe in miniature.....

Anthropos Apteros had once loved. Once, he had even had faith and hope. He had danced, barefoot in the grass. His life had been beautiful and he had taken if for granted. Oh so very much for granted. For every circumstance which life threw at him, he took and he did not give up. He had been, once, resilient and strong.

Once

As a child, he and his sister had been orphaned. He had stood and held her as they watched their home burn.
We walk the narrow path,
Beneath the smoking skies
... the smoke and flames had danced into the sky and they were alone
It had been Cylus, he remembered. Yet the flames had lit up the small village where they lived
Sometimes, you can barely tell the difference
between darkness
between darkness and light
... he had needed to stay strong for her.
When they took her, he looked for her, never losing sight of his goal. Saving her.
Do you have faith
in what we believe?
.But when he found her, he discovered the truth...
And so, he watched them as they hurt then killed her and, as he too died, he made a vow
The truest test is when we cannot
When we cannot see
Screaming, he began to dream..
and his tears fell like rain

"Right, well, there's no point to hanging around here"
"Nope,"
"Open and shut case, I'd say"
"Aye"
"Does he have any family?"
"Nope"
"Then, we burn him. Come on, lets get on"

Tio
They moved together and Tio had told a story. Of himself. The fox with him watched him and then, softly, spoke. "Were you lonely a lot as a child?" It seemed to be an honest question, not sarcastic nor amused. As the question was asked, a sense of anticipation tingled in the air.

But that was just that the rain was about to start. Surely?

Suddenly, the rain began to pour and it was not the kind of rain that one could ignore. A torrent began to fall and, within half a bit everyone in the Maze was soaked to the skin. Ripples spread out as raindrops fell on the quickly-soaked floor. It happened as soon as the statue finished speaking, as though the statue itself had been a catalyst.

Or maybe, it was just a coincidence.

Either way, the statue spoke. In a not very good rhyme, in fairness. But it gave them a choice. Each of them made the choice and, having made it, it had consequences. Some seen, some not.

The choice Tio made was to tell a riddle and the statue's head moved, tilting slightly to the side.

"A choice is made! The way is parted. Now, I leave you, broken-hearted!"

Sobs filled the air as the statue disappeared. In its place, where it had been was a single crystal shaped like a star. It would be the kind of thing that would go on a necklace. "You gonna take that with you?", the fox asked.

As the statue faded from view, the next step of the Maze became apparent. Three choices now - left, right or straight ahead.... however, in front of Tio was another individual, turning the corner at the same moment - a pale one

Toraji
The two of them moved, the man and the hare and, as they did Toraj heard echoes of a voice - whispers which were not distinguishable, not clearly made out at all.

"Can you hear that? I don't like it," said Half The Hare, somewhat nervously - apparently with him as well as having gone with Amaris, They went right and they came across some pretty flowers. Then, there was a butterfly in front of him and, as its wings beat, so too did a piece of parchment flutter down. On which was drawn a sketch of a maze. It was endless and impossible, it ran from one end of the world to the other and met itself where it had started. In the middle of it was ... whatever home looked like to him. That place where comfort and warmth and acceptance lived.

What did home look like?

Still, they walked and then, turning a corner as mazes are wont to do they walked straight into another, standing and looking at the three directions available to them..... At the floor at Toraj's feet was a crystal, small and star shaped and sort of like the pendent of a necklace.

Both

And there, in the middle of each possible direction, sitting on a table, was an item.
  • To the left there was a compass
  • To the right there was a black feather
  • Straight ahead there was a small, stuffed toy bunny
The table blocked the way and, until an item was chosen, no movement was happening.

"Which way are we going then?", both companions asked, albeit in their own ways

"Lonely? Me? Ha, you must be joking!" Tio replied quickly to Fred's question. Perhaps just a little bit too quickly. "A fun loving, friendly blonde cutie like myself? I was mister popular wherever I went. I must have met thousands of other kids during my childhood travels. How could anyone be lonely when they had a whole world full of people to meet?" The first drops of rain fell from the sky, and Tio looked away from Fred to stare at the path ahead. "Who could possibly dislike someone so larger-than-life as Tio? Someone so perfectly human? He's like one of the dashing rouges straight out of a fairytale. And that's why he'll never be lonely; because everybody loves the performance better than the performer behind it."

A flash of some unreadable emotion flickered across Tio's face as he realised that he'd said to much, and suddenly his body language that'd unconsciously relaxed into something else while he was speaking snapped back up into his usual stance. The cheerful Tio was back, and any sign of the man behind the illusion was hidden away again. "But anyway, enough about boring old me." Tio began, shooting an intrigued glance over at Fred. "Don't you think it's your turn to answer some questions Freddo? Where did you come from? Why were you brought to this maze? And why team up with me? I can't imagine that a talking fox doesn't have his own interesting story to tell. If I had to guess I'd say you're a spirit, but I don't get why a spirit would know that reaching the center of the maze would stop it from sucking people into it... unless you were a spirit of the maze itself."

With an echo of child-like sobs the staue disappeared, leaving in its place a star shaped crystal. At Fred's question Tio, naturally, bent down and picked it up to add it to his growing collection of loot. As he stood up again Tio noticed that there was something ahead of him! A pale human man and a... rabbit? Yes that was definitely a rabbit. Fred had said that other people had been sucked into the maze too, but because of the sheer size of the place Tio hadn't though that he'd bump into anybody else.

"Hey Fred... does it still count as a victory if we team up with other people to reach the middle?" He whispered quietly to the fox. "It can't hurt to have an extra pair of hands in a place like this, and if we get hungry that rabbit could make a tasty snack."

He then brought a wide smile up onto his face and waved merrily at the other party, bounding forwards into the center of the clearing. "Ahoy there! Glad to see we're not the only ones wandering around this place. Are you guys trying to win this game too?" He shouted enthusiastically. "I'm Tio, and this is Fed. And together we are," He struck a martial arts pose, "TEAM FOXBURGLAR! Because he's a fox and I'm... well that's not important actually, it's the thought that counts."

As he broke out of his pose Tio meandered over to the left, where an ivory compass was laid out on a table. It was a small thing, smooth and delicate, with swirling patterns carved gently into the back of it and a thin band of silver lining around the edges of the glass face. There were four directions on the compass with symbols which must have stood for north, east, south and west, but Tio couldn't tell which was which since they seemed to belong to a language he was unfamiliar with. The compass needle pointed directly ahead, down the left route.

At this rate Toraj wasn't entirely unfamiliar with the idea of strange noises and sensations, but Spirit's unease rubbed off easily on the Son of Light and his eyes darted momentarily as they trailed their way down the long halls of the Maze in hopes of finding some hint to their intended or recommended direction. Thus far, for all the strange things he'd seen, there'd been close to nothing to go by. "Well, the only way to go is forward..." Musing aloud to himself in Grovokian, the man made his way with the Hare at his side, resolving that it didn't serve him to dwell on questions he knew he couldn't find the answers to yet. He'd just have to have faith in that answers would come to him eventually, though it was just as likely that the questions would simply be rendered obsolete. If he managed to get out of here, it wouldn't really matter how he got here or why. Not anymore.

"Are there others like you in this place?" Toraj posed his first real query to his strange companion. It hadn't really occurred to him before then that he could speak to it, though he didn't expect a worthwhile reply. Still, it was the question at the front of his mind at the moment, and though many questions remained about this place, perhaps he'd find some purchase in more direct probes. "Have you always been here?"

The flutter of the butterfly's wings had caught his attention, at last. Reaching down to take the parchment from the ground, he looked it over. He couldn't deny the slight surge of approval, like a warmth rising in his chest, at the fact it was a map and nothing else. He couldn't read, but he understood imagery as well as the next guy. He studied it carefully for a moment, rising again to straighten and keep walking while he inspected the document. Though he could understand the imagery, the layout of the maze it depicted made very little sense to him. Still, it couldn't quite staunch the initial excitement of being able to understand in the first place. Throwing a few glances around as he went, he cross-referenced with the map in a wholehearted attempt at figuring out where on the map he was currently located if he could match up any sort of pattern or landmark---namely the three-way crossing he was coming to up ahead, along with the crossing he'd initially departed when he and the Ghost had went their separate ways.

Home. What did home look like?

To Toraj, it wasn't a place. It was a face. Strangely depicted in the winding lines of the Maze's passages and twisting turns, he thought he could make out the likeness someone he recognized. A warm presence glowing through a stern face surrounded by radiant golden locks, not unlike his own. There was that melody again, creeping into the back of his mind... He hummed. Softly, the tune carried past his lips as he stared between the lines in the map, before his attention had to turn to his feet. The crystal twinkled softly and invitingly to him where it lay and, perhaps predictably, he knelt down to take it off the ground, scooping it into his palm as he stood back up. He didn't take too much time to inspect it this time, however, as his attention was stolen by the other blonde in front of him---until the man spoke, Toraj hadn't actually realized he was even there.

Toraj squinted. Though the man certainly had a flair for the extravagant and his expressive bodylanguage did the trick to translate what words he couldn't readily understand, the look on his face was in turn just as telling to Toraj's confusion. In broken Common, he spoke: "Toraj, and Spirit." He patted his chest and motioned to the Hare afterwards. "Not win, just leave. If leaving means winning, then... yes. Trying to win."

Toraj knew what a burglar was. He wasn't going to question it.

With Tio stepping over to the compass on the left, Toraj followed. His eyes were drawn to the bunny perhaps more in surprise than any real desire to take the toy with him. He passed his eyes between Spirit the Hare and the toy bunny on the table. "Looks like you," he remarked offhandedly before pursuing Tio to the left and letting himself study the compass over the other's shoulder. He couldn't recall ever holding one before nor seeing one actively in use. He'd seen something like it on a ship, once, but the memories of it were hazy at best. Toraj chose not to pick any other item, instead choosing to trust Tio's choice of the compass. They may as well make an attempt at sticking together for now, though spreading out would increase the chances of someone ending this nightmare. Still... he couldn't help feeling a bit uneasy about the idea, in retrospect. What if only the winner got out?

"Spirit..." He turned to his companion, for a moment. "What happens if you don't win?"

No matter the Hare's reply, he followed Tio.

Off Topic
I didn't quite understand if both of us were required to pick an item, each, or if we could settle for one and the same. I went with the latter assumption.
