"That's it, good" George nodded, helping Rey with her posture. His arms moved hers to the right position, while the training shield rested nicely on her other arm. As the two trained, Archibald entered the open courtyard and watched for a trill, seeing how the girl would do. It wasn't as if he was there to train her with weapons, but her ability to use them would of course prove useful for her, and this close look would give the man a general idea of how good she was with the weapon she called Windsong.
"Perfect" the man smiled, before moving himself opposite Rey'na and preparing his spear, though his had a curved blade. Then, quickly, the man swung his spear at the woman with a quick movement. Trying to block again, the man stopped, the blade almost slicing at the top of her head. Although the two had been practicing for a while, Rey just couldn't get used to the shield on her arm. It was hard enough to use a spear as it was, let alone with more to think about than just stabbing. But the girl was determined to keep going, until she glanced and saw Archibald.
"I'm sorry, we'll have to train more another time. I'm on duty" she smiled to George, with the same warm smile as always. Something about George felt nice to her, gave her a friend she could share her time and worries with. George took her nerves away when he laughed at her mistakes playfully, yet never scolded her for them, just taught her how to remedy them. It wasn't the kind of treatment she had expected from the elements, and yet she loved every trill of it.
With a small nod from George, Rey removed the shield from her arm and put Windsong on her back, before heading over to Archibald. "Sorry, I'm not late am I? I was just catching up on some training" she smiled. Archibald shook his head, before gesturing that the two should start walking. "No, you're just on time, I wouldn't worry. Today we have to patrol instead of sitting in one place, so be prepared to walk a lot."
After a few bits, the two had started their patrol through the town. While the day itself was relatively nice and warm, the girl couldn't help but wonder what awaited them on the day. So far, every day she had been on patrol had resulted in some kind of conflict occurring. While that was a part of the job, she somewhat hoped that more would come of today than just fights and arguments needing to be resolved. Perhaps, even, the day would just be quiet and calm - wouldn't that be nice.
As the two walked along, Rey glanced around with a small frown. Although there weren't many, a few men and women were begging, some selling whatever they could afford to sell in the hope of buying food. Archibald glanced to the girl and noticed her frown, taking a mental note of her reaction to it, though Rey had no idea. She was too distracted by one particular group of beggars. Without asking, Rey made her way towards the three of them with a small, friendly smile.
"I hope this helps" she nodded to both, handing them all a gold nel each. All of them looked to her in surprise, but every one of them was grateful for it. Each shook her hand as she knelt down beside where they sat and each gave a warm-hearted thank you. "I'm just glad I can help. I come from Rynmere and I lived in low-town, I've seen what poverty like this can do. If you ever need any help, find me while I'm on patrol. I'll be happy to do anything I can."
"Thank you, girl" one man smiled, placing his hand lightly over hers and shaking it. With a small nod from Rey'na, she made her way back to Archibald again, not saying anything as they carried on their patrol through the town. After a few trills of silence, Archibald couldn't help but ask. "Most wouldn't do more than glance. Might I ask, out of curiosity, what was different for you?"
"I'm not most people. I've seen what doing nothing does for the world - absolutely nothing. I refuse to play a part in that" Rey admitted, glancing back to the man and stopping their walk, her eyes looking to see if he approved. A small, yet notable nod was given to her in return, before Archibald gestured to keep going. While he wasn't in the place to encourage her to give away all her money her willingness to do something, big or small, was admirable. Perhaps it ran through the family, he considered, as he remembered her last name.
After twenty bits of patrolling, both decided to stop for a drink, opening their waterskins and having a sip from it. As miserable as Cylus was, adapting back to heat was difficult, and on long patrols like this it was almost nicer to be in the cold. At least that way you warmed up as you walked. Though, something had to be said for the beauty of Scalvoris in the hotter seasons, the way the plant life bloomed and thrived, the beaches and the way the ocean would reflect the sun. Everything looked brighter, happier. Something that Rey'na loved to see.
As she glanced around, a small glimmer of light caught her eyes, causing her to cover them. Placing her hand over her head to cover the light, Rey caught a glance of a woman sat outside, selling weapons, shields and some pieces of armor. Beside her was a building that was clearly a forge, though if she was selling outside the woman could only imagine the inside of the forge was purely that, and not a shop alongside it. That or Rey'na wasn't the only one that appreciated the beauty of Scalvoris in the hot cycle.
"I could do with some new gear. Do you mind if we look?" she smiled brightly at Archibald, who gave a simple nod and followed alongside her as the two walked. With a few trills of browsing, the woman stood herself up and smiled at the pair. "Hello! How can I help, do you need anything in particular?"
"I was wondering how much that cost" Rey'na pointed, a round shield lying out perfectly on the blanket. It had a simple yet beautiful design, with gold patterns and engravings over a beautiful black base. Delighted, the woman picked up the shield and held it out to show it to Rey, giving it a better look. "This was created by our finest Smith, the best thing he's ever created. So we'd be lookin' at something like fourty gold."
"Hm, fourty..." the girl muttered, before opening her coin purse and looking in to it. More than fourty was in there, only just. But was she that eager to get a shield? After all, Rey'na could barely block anything yet, it wouldn't be that useful to her in the slightest. But the same had been true when she bought Windsong, and now she was making improvements day by day, growing better with the spear. Eventually, after a few trills of thinking, Rey'na looked back to the woman and handed her fourty gold.
"Perfect! Please, you must try it on, with the spear in your hand too! I'll get the Smith" the woman said excitedly, taking the gold and handing Rey the spear. With an amused chuckle, Rey'na drew her spear and placed the shield on her arm, waiting patiently for the woman to come back out with the Smith. Trills later, a Biqaj man wearing an apron and with a face covered in smoke came out with a grin, looking at Rey and clapping. "It suits, I'd say you're the perfect one for that shield."
"Go on sir, get closer!" the woman exclaimed excitedly to Archibald, who gave a small chuckle and stood beside Rey'na. A squeal of joy came from the woman as she grabbed the Smith's arm and shook it with energy. "Oh look, Ryqet! Look at them! Don't they look amazing with that shield?" she giggled, causing Ryqet to laugh beside her.
"Aye, they do. But I'm sure they want to be on their way now" he smiled, giving Rey'na a friendly wink. Rey held back a small grin, before shaking the hand of the man and woman and putting the spear back on her back. Ryqet returned to the forge and Archibald and Rey'na were back on their way. As they walked, Archibald took not of her smile, seeing the joy she seemed to feel from this job.
"Today has been a successful day for you already, it would seem. That shield truly does suit you" he nodded, though made no eye contact with the girl. It wasn't that he was scared of her, but that he wanted to keep his thoughts quiet and to himself. As the two walked, his mind wondered about the girl. What her past had been, could someone truly change from that, especially to someone so kind? Of all people, though, Archibald knew how good people could be, even if they are misguided. The brightest smile he had worn in a while spread across his face.
Perhaps he had been right in his judgement of her. Only time would tell.
