Outside, it was chaos. Inside was not much better. The floors heaved and the walls shook. People ran and panicked, others were more calm and sensible. But nonetheless, the very ground itself trembled, a deluge of water from outside soaked into the ground - into the foundations - as impossible winds whipped up - and then - as things got to a head outside - it all went still. And in the stillness they all got to notice the same thing. A gaping hole in the middle of the hallway floor. This hole, clearly visible from the rooms they were in, was about six foot across, although the size was rough and the shape uneven. It descended down into the darkness, and there, in the depths, was something visible to any who looked.

"That's part of the underground area we were going to anyway," Zach said quietly. Glancing outside where sudden storms were raging and water was battering the door, he made a decision. "We go. Group C, we can reach our objective this way. Group B, anyone from there is welcome, I'll show you how to get out the way we were going to get in, and you can go to your objective. Anyone who's changed their mind may do so."

ChiChi nodded. "Ve vill go down. Come, group. Ve haff lost enough time!"

Groups B & C

We are no longer stalled! IF you wish to you may make your way down the hole in the middle of the house (poor Baron Smooglenuff....) - there will be equipment there and the two guides (Zach and ChiChi) will lead their teams. However, at this point you may swap teams if you wish. Therefore, in your next post, once you've described your reaction to the lurching / shaking / sudden bloody big hole in the floor, please identify:
a) if you're leaving the manor or not
b) if you are - which group you're going with.

Those remaining in /joining Group B - please post in THIS thread - once I know who's where, I'll respond to all "earthquake" posts, too
Thanks!

Darius had braced himself against the doorway, hoping the thick wooden frame would provide enough protection to get through the earthquake. The noises were frightening, and dsepite his not insignificant build, he felt tiny as the howling winds whipped around the manor. He no longer held Yeva - he had only done so to ensure she was protected by the same archway - but he did not move away from her, either, lest she felt a need to keep clinging to him.

When the tremors finally subsided, there was an unusual calm that surrounded them. The silence was discomfiting, and it took a few moments for Darius to realise how rapidly his heart was beating. His eyes had been wide as they'd stared up at the ceiling, wondering if it would hold, and it was only now that he saw the gaping hole in the floor.

A muttered curse escaped his bearded lips as he took in the sight. Darius was fond of water, but only when he was on the deck of a ship. Flooding was a very different prospect.

It was Zach's comments that shook the seafarer out of his stupor. He turned to face ChiChi when she spoke, and then he looked around at the others. There had been much discussion regarding whether or not the group should proceed. Since then, Kalortah had fled, and Ari'sora and Wald had been injured. He cast his gaze over the others: Yeva, Oram, and ChiChi.

"I propose we go," he said, clearing his throat and repeating those words. "The four of us, I mean. We are uninjured, and I know I can trust each of you."

They were sincere words. He had adventured with Oram before, and while he felt an urge to protect Yeva, he knew she was not only a healer, but resourceful enough to be a valuable asset to the group. ChiChi, of course, was their guide - they'd be lost without her.

"The injured stay behind to seek treatment and do whatever they can to assist the others who are here. There is much work to be done in this place, and none of the underground activity should be done while wounded."

He didn't want another argument to break out - time was of the essence, after all - but he didn't want misguided pride to jeopardise the expedition, either. And so he had said his piece.

"Are we agreed?" he asked nobody in particular. "Are we of one accord?"

Shake well before opening

Everything pitched and shook as Oram braced himself. The solid stone floor tugged and squirmed under him like a carpet draped over a stirring beast. Deep rumblings filled the traveler’s ears, punctuated by higher pitched groans as the massive structure overhead protested unwonted stresses. Bits of rock and plaster splashed down around him, casting up clouds of dust that filled his eyes and nose.

Then the sound and the shaking stopped, and after a few moments the dust subsided. ”Everyone alright?” Oram called out, emerging unsteadily from his makeshift refuge. As if in warning answer, another pulse of plaster and rock debris clattered down just in front of the hunter, causing him to start and pull back a moment before resuming.

One by one he spotted the people who were still there, allowing himself a quick smile and nod to Darius before his eyes landed on the chasm that had appeared in the hallway floor just outside. The others were looking at the thing, too. It was big, wider than he was tall in places, and deep. Something was down there.

Oram’s ears were ringing, both from the lingering echoes of the earthquake there and from the pounding of his own heart; it was only by degrees that he realized that people were talking: Zach, then ChiChi, then Darius. Only from the last did he catch every word. He looked around and regarded the others as Darius listed them, then nodded his agreement with the man’s suggestion. ”Agreed, we should go,” he said, ”but perhaps first we should make sure that we really are okay, and that our gear wasn’t damaged.”

He looked down at himself and saw that he had been stricken white, especially along the top sides of his arms. He swiped his right hand across his left sleeve to reveal a smear of brown fabric underneath. Then he started shaking and slapping the rest of the rock dust off, examining himself as he did so to make sure the coating didn’t conceal any unsuspected injury, after which he looked around to see if the others were doing the same. After making sure the people hadn’t suffered any new damage he would start doing the same for his equipment.

It happened quickly.

The very ground beneath them shifted, water pooled and soaked and horrible sounds of destruction and falling debris followed. Yeva stumbled, struggled to keep her balance, one hand holding onto Darius, the other trying to cling to the frame. She pinched her eyes closed, braced herself and then...

Then it was over.

She looked up at her friend and pulled back slowly, not quite trusting the ground just yet, "Are you alright?" she did a once over of Darius and then spun at the sound of Oram calling out to check their count, "I think we're okay!" While it didn't seem the ceiling had collapsed and Ari was still in tact - thank fate - a giant hole had peeled away and now presented a new problem. She stared at it for a moment in shocked horror. How close that had been to any of them. Yeva glanced back and approached it tentatively, leaning over as much as she dared to try and see its depth. Others began to push out of their rooms, one of which she recognized from the parlor. The man known as Alex, if she remembered correctly. It seemed that they were not the only ones who had a few snags in getting started.

"I... I," she glanced between the two groups and listened to Darius' suggestion. He thought they should stay together, he trusted the ones in their team. The redhead chewed the skin of her lip in worry. ChiChi emphasized trust on the expedition. Ari'sora had opted to stay, but when she called Devin's name, there was no answer. Where did he go?

"If Ari is staying here and can help the wounded, I'll go into the mountain with ChiChi and the others. I made a promise." Into the cavernous hole that flooded water that hopefully wouldn't wash them out... If Azrael knew what she was agreeing to, he would have been rabid, and then, after patting the gear she wore to make sure it was all still snug on her persons, Yeva gasped, "The other books!"

While her own copy was still safely tucked into her bag, there were others who may have left their copy on the table, and if those copies had fallen upon the water soaked floor.... "Wald?" then she remembered his companion, the unique cat. She scanned the equipment room and scooped up a tome that had clattered to the ground, trying to analyze the others without seeming too overprotective. In her hand, one of the guide books was victim to a bit of water damage and she quickly tried to wipe at the leather cover with her sleeve before it was past the point of no return, "Your wound didn't reopen, did it?"

Stone creaked, wood splintered, wind whipping around outside, the earth itself started to try and flood the room. Wald had took cover under the table, as books fell against the wood just above him and his animal companion. There was panic scattered about the manor, shouts and screams from some and an unholy quiet from others. The seeping water soaked into the hunter's pants and began to try and take some books victim.

Wald stayed calm through this, his mind layered into a strong structure due to influences of the past arc. This was nothing compared to being eaten alive, and the disorientating shaking was nothing like that shout the mage used to make his ears bleed. Ari, the flying tiger was freaked, having to be held in place by Wald and Ylfa, though one free hand of the hunter seemed to clutch something. He held close to the book of wildlife in the underground, he may of knew the dangers now but information was an important tool.

The shaking stopped, just as suddenly as it started. The others had already started talking with themselves, and a hole had opened in the hallway. Darius had begun trying to rally people together, though any words meant to keep Wald away from going fell on deaf ears. It was around the time he got himself out from under the table when a female's voice seemed to remember his existence specifically. Yeva asked about the wound that was sewn together, and in response he patted at it confirming it was fine.

The large man looked to the hole, and studied it for a moment. Wald looked to the small group of people of B, and understood one thing. If something attacked them while they were descending, they would be nothing but a memory in someone's mind. Taking hold of one of the torches, he lit it before tossing it in just to see how deep it was. While it was falling, he cleared his throat. "There are dangerous creatures in there, and they wont wait for you to get off those ropes." Wald looked to the few people in B, with a cold calm look. "If you think you do not need the help, I can leave. Though before you decide on that, I should tell you more about myself." Looking back down into the pit he watched the light. "I have sieged a fortress on my own, led men in a fight against necromancers, taken down creatures of great size and above all I am a hunter." The look of cold understanding was now pointed to Darius, his golden brown wolven eyes waiting for his response to this. Then his face turned to a smile, fangs on bare for a moment. "It is a simple yes or no from all of you, if you think you need the help."

They talked - ChiChi urged them and then, Darius spoke out and suggested that the four of them went. ChiChi nodded her head. "That makes sense. Ve vill go. You, who are injured, you stay." After Darius had suggested it, they started to move. Chi Chi watched as the two groups got themselves down the hole. She and Zach spoke briefly, but then they made their way. The two groups had a few moments where members could speak together - but then they split off, one group off to the depths with Zach. And then there was them.

Once they had climbed down, and separated, they made their way down a long and slime-covered tunnel, they found themselves plunged into darkness and the sensation of descending was inevitably there. As they stepped in, the darkness was all-encompassing, wrapping around them like the embrace of a lover. It took a few moments for their eyes to adjust to the lights. There were a lot of things which seemed to make no sense here - the tunnel was large - they could walk three abreast - and currently quite high. Sounds echoed around them in an eerie fashion and those with animals or heightened senses could tell - there was just a strange, almost-metallic but certainly not-quite-right smell to the place. A sense of almost static charge.

Something which just made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. The tunnel stretched out before them and ChiChi led the way. There was always that feeling of there being something on the edge of their vision, something just outside the pool of light. Just beyond their vision - or any sense - which they couldn't .... quite... catch. It combined with the sensation of moving downwards, though they weren't, and also, perhaps, was added to when ChiChi pointed out. "Ve are inside ze mountain now. Above us is rock, and earth, and stone, and lava. Is nature not beautiful?"

There were things to notice here, if they had the skill and ability to do so. And for some, it seemed to be blind luckdice roll in Scalv Discord

By pure luck you notice something - maybe it's the drop of water which lands on your gloves - maybe it's the way that the lightstone shines. By chance you notice that, there, in one tiny spot on the wall, there is a single trickle of blood. It's still liquid......

You notice that the air is strange here. It's coming from to your left - which isn't possible - it's like the air is moving in directions which don't fit with your surroundings.

And then, they came to a junction and - perhaps unlike she would have previously, ChiChi nodded. "We should stay together," she said. "Yeva. Will you keep a rough map for us? You are in a maze of bleedy little passages

And so, after much rancor and fuss, there were four of them. Oram let out a quiet, relieved sigh as Zach and his party headed their own way; whatever else might happen, at least the hunter would be able to hear himself think now. And maybe -he thought as he looked around at Darius, ChiChi, and Yeva- just maybe, this present company could discuss things and decide on plans without shouting matches, nervous breakdowns, airborne desertions, or profuse bleeding. Being under a volcano, they had enough things to worry about. Hopefully, none of them had taken an extra tarp.

Oram put the yellow lightstone into his lantern, wedging it as best he could into the wick holder, then tied the lantern to his belt. The light it cast made everybody’s features stand out sallow against their dark surroundings, but at least he could see those features and some of those surroundings well enough.

The tunnel was high enough for Oram to walk with his spear upright. The rock around them was mostly dark, almost black in the jaundiced stonelight, though it glistened with gold-tinged moisture, and here and there were pale patches of fuzzy—textured minerals resembling moss or lichen. A black rivulet of moisture running down one of those patches caught the traveler’s eye. Against the darker stone it might have just seemed like another trickle of water; here, however, it stood out, distinct and somehow wrong.

Oram stopped to look closer, lowering the head of his spear until its point came within a hair’s breadth of the weird dark trickle. He did not want to touch it for some reason. ”I think that’s blood,” he said after a moment, not knowing even as he did why he thought that. One could not even tell colors properly by this oddly-toned light; and yet, somehow, he sensed it was so. ”How can there be blood running here?” With his spear-point, he slowly retraced the course of the flow towards wherever it came from in the rock overhead.

As he bent to peer at the blood more closely, Oram could feel how cold the rock was; with his face close enough, his breath even started to steam. That would explain the moisture on the walls, he thought. But it didn’t make sense that it would be so cold here in the first place. Or that there would be fresh blood running down the stone walls.

ChiChi’s voice broke through Oram’s thoughts; as was often the case, he hadn’t caught the first thing she said, but it seemed she was giving them instructions, as a group and individually. She wanted him to pick a route, as they had apparently come to a fork, with a tunnel leading to their right, and another continuing straight ahead. He thought a moment. ”We should stick to one wall,” he said after a moment. ”Let’s go straight here, stick to the left wall from here on.”

It was only after he said it that he found himself wondering: why was she asking him to pick a route? Did that mean she didn’t actually know the way? But of course she didn’t; the rift they had entered hadn’t even existed a break before. ChiChi couldn’t know anything more about it than he did. Unless…

”Are we still under Smooglenuff’s estate, ChiChi?” he asked. ”If so, do you know of anything built under there? A wine cellar? A family crypt? A dungeon? A sewer?”

"Aye, I'm fine," Darius nodded with his best reassuring smile to Yeva, though the words caught in his throat.

Another nod was sent in Oram's direction as the hunter brushing the dust off his clothing, and again to Yeva when she confirmed her willingness to follow Darius' rather simple plan. Wald made his brave speech, then, and looked Darius in the eye. The sailor had to admire the man's courage and his willingness to push on, but there was nothing to say his stitched wound would hold up under the strains of an underground operation - and that was assuming his flying tiger didn't panic again.

So when ChiChi agreed with his suggestion, it seemed that the decision had been made. Darius bade Wald and the other group farewell, before following their guide, along with Yeva and Oram, down into the hole.

The bearded blond felt the temperature change almost immediately. He had never been beneath a volcano before, but he never would have expected it to be cold. In fact, the combination of the temperature and the confined space made him think of his time in the ice caves on Ishallr, and a shudder ran through him. The others probably wouldn't be able to appreciate how glad he was for the darkness that surrounded them.

But the blackness was his only comfort, and it was fleeting. The sounds and smells of the place were unsettling, and the human found himself grateful when his eyes slowly adjusted until he could make out the others.

"It's cold," he said quietly, aware he was pointing out the obvious, but that he was doing so in a place that made such an observation remarkable. "And can you smell that? It smells of...I can't pin it down to a single thing. It's a mixture. It smells of...everything?"

Oram's revelation that the walls had fresh blood upon them sent another shudder through the woodworker's body. He turned to Yeva - she seemed the most likely person to have some understanding of the liquid - before nodding at ChiChi's instruction to scout ahead.

Darius stepped forward, lightstone at the ready, and, following Oram's directional guidance, dared to venture further into a tunnel that he wished didn't exist.

There was a general relief to be moving on, a concern for the aftermath of the estate, and a deep pit of fear that stirred her stomach as Yeva once again referred to her manual. She had to bite her tongue to stop words that would no doubt make her appear craven. She closed the book and slid her copy of the map upon it and pulled the light stone from her pocket to fight the over-exaggerated sense of darkness that made everything else feel just out of reach, despite their close proximity.

The ground felt slimy beneath her boots and the temperature began to drop. Nearby, she recognized Darius' voice, "And can you smell that? It smells of...I can't pin it down to a single thing. It's a mixture. It smells of...everything?"

Everything? Yeva tried to smell the air with little luck. She hadn't noticed and found herself shuffling closer to the familiar sailor. Yeva wanted very much to write this down, especially after her all too brief chat with the Baron. Could such thing exist?

The Core of all the elements... The Heart of Scalvoris.

Yeva had to stop herself from getting ahead. She needed facts, evidence... All this was nothing more than myth... Right?

Chichi called for her to keep track of their map and she sputtered in her shock, "Me?"

Yeva pointed to where Oram had spotted the blood, looked at each of them, "Not to sound timorous, but we are beneath Faldrass. I'm really sorry... I-I don't know much about cartography, um, but I do know how to read. In our books," she tried to shuffle her things and hold it up, "There's an entry on Giant Spiders. Huge ones. They're very rare... but this is their territory and they like to eat living things. Maybe the blood has nothing to do with it... But it might..." Yeva's face was burning, she didn't want to do this public speaking thing and she instead focused on righting the map and locating their current place given they had now climbed through a hole in the ground. She chewed at the skin of her bottom lip till it was raw and drew a small droplet to indicate the strange findings and slowly crept over to try and observe it herself. Pressing a gloved hand to the wall, it was then she felt the wind.

Brow furrowing, she looked over her shoulder at the direction it came from but found no source. How was that possible, "The air currents are strange here too..." she muttered, nerves making her instantly jump back to Darius' side and grab his arm, "This place is already so scary," she whispered, unable to shake the sense that this was a terrible idea. Their luck had been nothing short of disastrous since the moment their expedition began, "We'll be okay. Everything will be okay."

Yeva looked upon their path and followed it along their map. 'Oh, Cassion,' she prayed silently, honey brown eyes flickering between the map and her next step, 'Please don't let me get lost. Not this time... Please... Pretty please.'

Before....

Oram was designated at deciding which direction they went and he suggested that they stick to one wall. Chichi nodded her head, approvingly. That made good sense. When he asked her about where they were, she glanced back slightly. "I do not think so, no," she said, thoughtfully. "It seems zat we haf walked further. But remember, zese caves, they move. If we stood here, in a month, zey will not look the same. I am able to always know, what is the direction we are facing. What is the distance we have come. Zat is what makes me a guide. We draw ze map, to try and understand what, if anyzing, it stays the same. And to make quick get out if needed, or find alternative, if needed."

They discussed the blood on the walls, the cacophony of smells, the strange wind-currents. There was no doubt that they were moving and clearly working well. Chichi looked at Yeva and gave a slight half-shudder. "I do not like spiders. If one is here, we vill kill it so it is knowing very much that it is very dead."

They kept moving, as per Oram's direction and they found themselves in a large cave - the tunnel opened up and they could all see the glow of lava. As they walked, carefully, forward with Darius at the lead, they saw the cavern. It was roughly circular and there were small geysers which looked like mini - volcanoes around the room. In terms of exactly how "mini" these were - each one was the size of a small hillock. Lava spouted upwards out of them, flowed down them.

Around the cavern there was also a stream - but it was unlike any normal stream - this was a stream of slow-moving lava.

Chichi looked at the cavern and said "I do not believe zat...."

But what Chichi believed - or did not - they would never find out.
Group B Map
Image
During....

It started as a slight rumble.

Just for a half of a split second, that was all it was.

Later - should later happen for them - they might discuss how important it was to note that the rumbling came from beneath them. That, as the spirit above fed into the divine energies, as the earth and the water and the air mingled in howling chaos, the fire beneath joined.

But those were considerations for later. Much later.

In that moment, the ground beneath them started to shake and, within seconds, the whole place was undulating. Of course, being underground, that caused some issues as fissures cracked in the ground and stone and earth and debris was loosened from above them. So, it was a moment of trouble for them and yet, they spotted things which might help.

Yeva There are two other exits from this cavern - the one on the left (which you'd follow if you are following Oram's 'stick to the left' technique) has wind blowing from it - and there is the sound of liquid flowing from there, too. saw one thing, while Darius the "mini volcanoes" are cracking open noted another and Oram the lava-stream (which is flowing in the direction you were walking) speeds up significantly . However, everyone there saw - and heard - the collapse of the tunnel which had led them here. Debris was falling from above - they were all in danger of being hit by falling rocks.

Chichi's eyes widened as she looked around. Her face suddenly turned ashen grey and she said "Zach! Zach is hurt." She looked at them all with fear in her eyes. "Can ve help him? Can ve? We can not let him die, not here in ze dark!"

Which left them with three choices..... go forward, leave if they could, or help the guide if they were able.

That was the moment they were in as Cold found them.
...... After.
