Not even Faith, the Champion of the Immortal of Souls knew where they went when they were released to the Beyond. That was in a sense comforting, and yet in another sense terrifying. Still, Woe hadn’t sincerely expected that she would have all the answers, only that she might have some clue. But he was learning that Faith didn’t indulge in guessing games.
Woe listened to her speak of his aunts, to whom she was devoted. Although he acknowledged she must have had some bias, Woe nodded along. It fit the general attitude toward both, although sometimes Famula was regarded with more controversy than others.
”I know of Lisirra, having fought her forces during the Etzos war. Nobody had heard from her since, so I suppose she must either be dead…” Woe didn’t finish that thought, but moved onto Audrae,
”As for Audrae, her daughters held me captive in Augiery for a time. So I’ve had some meager connection to all of my mother’s sisters, in one way or another.”
Then their topic of conversation moved onto more palatable topics, such as that of the Order. Woe had to admit he was still excited to be a part of it. This was in part what motivated him to seek out Faith, and discuss the rumor that had prompted his and Natalia’s visit there.
When asked what trims he might pursue, Woe had given it some thought and was able to answer almost immediately,
”I’ve considered Brown and Silver. Also White, but I’ll need to overcome my black thumb before I can really start on that. I’m not the best at gardening, but I’ve learned to craft some simple medicines.”
Woe wasn’t too surprised at her question that she asked next, as it seemed only natural one would want a fresh perspective of the Order. Especially for one who’d occupied its top position for some time.
”It makes sense to me, the hierarchy. I’ve always felt drawn to easily identifiable ranks, and command structures. I don’t know why, those sorts of things always held my fascination. What might make things better? Perhaps widening our branches to include things that positively impact society. Such as Architecture, building up cities, and healing civilizational scars and hurts, not just personal ones.” Woe didn’t know how she’d take that suggestion. It was often enough to heal people on an individual level, and not just focus on the broader picture. But that was how Woe saw things.

There was no hesitation from Woe when he talked about the trims he would pursue. Faith nodded her head as she listened to that and she considered that he seemed on much more solid ground when he discussed that. It was mere trill later that he confirmed her thoughts, explaining that he liked structure and hierarchy. She considered this for a moment, mulling it over in her mind and trying to look at the idea from different angles. "So do I, generally," she said in a quiet and thoughtful tone. "Yet, so often, it is what I find myself fighting against. I suppose the difference is that I find a system of seniority and levels of responsibility a very good thing. It's just when seniority gets mistaken for superiority, I start getting a twitch in my left eye." She smiled slightly and considered it. It wasn't something she had really thought about before, and she was glad to have the opportunity to now. That didn't mean that Faith forgot for one moment who Woe was, but there was a fundamental truth to her which had always been part of her personality; Faith believed that people were fundamentally good and, when someone tried to do the right thing, they should be forgiven. It drove Padraig mad, of course, and she knew that he wished she'd be more prone to protecting herself, but it simply wasn't her way.
So, she listened and when Woe spoke about what he would like to see change, or be added, Faith did more than just listen, she paid attention. His idea was something she had thought of before, many times - in many ways it was what the Institute of Innovation in Rharne had been about for her; the chance for people to see that medicine was so much more than dealing with illness. She nodded, thoughtfully, her hands pressing together as she tapped the pads of her two index fingers against each other once, twice, and then she lifted her head and spoke. "I agree," she said. "I feel that our remit could be so much more. That is what Isonomia is about, trying to achieve that state of political equality at a societal level. I hoped Isonomia would do it, but although we've achieved a lot, we've not managed it. The Institute for Innovation, then, I hoped would strengthen that broadening of things, and it has. But it's not enough, not yet." People were hungry, people lived in sub-standard housing, that kind of thing. It required a joined up approach, and more.
"I tell you what," she said softly. "Put together a proposal. Identify a clear remit and define borders; what would this branch of the Order do - and what would they not do? After the remit comes the ethos and goal. What is the aim, where will they work? Is this a branch which repairs people's houses, or builds new ones? Then, put forward likely needed resources; I know you can't be specific but give an example or two. What training will be needed? For that I usually break it into must-have, should-have and could-have. Then finally identify trims, numbers, that kind of thing. I'll be looking for the most efficient use of our resources for maximum impact." Faith smiled at him. "Bring it to me when you're done - if you do it - and we'll have a look at how realistic it is."
With a slight raise of her eyebrow, she looked at him. Would he be prepared to do that work to make it a reality? She didn't know but, she had to admit, she hoped so.

Woe nodded to her thoughts about hierarchy. He thought he was of the same mind about notions of elitism, and what seniority meant as opposed to a system of elitism by such dubious rubrics as seniority.
"Experience is useful, but following another's experience without your eyes open to new issues can lead to stagnation. Seniority is well and good, so long as it doesn't confer the benefits of absolute command to those who have more experience. " Woe thought that was true, but wasn't sure if he and Faith met eye to eye on every aspect of that.
Woe was thinking now about his proposal, as Faith responded to it. Woe tried to think of ways in which it might fit neatly into the Order's existing structure but was having issues formulating a plan in the moment. It'd likely take some more time alone in thought in order to pursue in earnest, but he was up to the challenge. Her thoughts on skills needed and skills desired were taken well under advisement. He had an idea what skills would be most useful toward the ends he saw, but he wanted to give the idea room to breathe in order to come to fruition.
"Thank you, I will accept that task. It may take me some time to come up with a suitable proposal, but once I do you'll be the first I contact about it."
So having said that, there didn't appear to be much more to discuss, except to apologize for inconveniencing her,
"I apologize for any upset I might have caused. I will try to announce myself beforehand if I ever visit your home again on such grave and serious business."

Well, that escalated quickly. And then, fortunately, cooled off again. Somewhat. I hadn’t actually expected the conversation to take such a tense turn when I started reading the thread, but it made sense in terms of the characters involved. You all deserve kudos for being willing to take your characters places that weren’t comfortable in the name of honesty.

Since there is no mention of Woe having any sort of ulterior agenda at the beginning of the thread, I was a bit surprised when it came up that he did. The poor man clearly has a lot of baggage, and you write Woe in a way that the reader feels that baggage without being bored by it. I hope he patches things up with Natalia. She can’t be happy with how things went here.
Speaking of baggage, I enjoy the way you write your ghosts and spirits. I actually felt sad when Erastus decided to go over. Emma, not so much. Taste *that*, Breen.

Wow, that thread wasn’t any fun for Natalia at all, was it? She gets told she’s hanging out with a murderer, accused of being a Webspinner herself, and then she finds out that Woe “considered” her a friend. And although she handled it all with her usual intelligence and self-possession, it must have hurt. It will be interesting to see how she deals with the aftermath of this, and with Woe, going forward.
At least Vielkrontier still likes you.

You showed a harsher side of Faith than I’ve read before, although I guess it makes sense that she has it, given her background. In particular she was harder on Natalia than I would have expected. I’m sure Faith had her reasons. The conversation seemed to settle down to something more civil and businesslike after Nat took her leave, and Faith then got to show her more forgiving and helpful side.
Enjoy your rewards!

For setting this rumor to rest and other things:
Faith
+1 wp to your next wealth thread.
Who you gonna call For some reason, there will be over the coming Cycle (Rebirth 722) a spike in requests that the Order of Adunih help with ghost-related problems. Seems there is another rumor about the Order: that they have some sort of special on ghost whisperer services.
Woe
+2 wp to your next wealth thread, from an anonymous benefactor.
Inside job The Webspinners have misread Woe's intentions. At some point in the coming Cycle, they will contact him, trying to enlist his aid in infiltrating both the Scalvoris Council and the Order of Adunih.
Natalia
*I'll* be your friend! Some time in the next cycle, a stray puppy will start following Natalia around. It is almost irresistably adorable and seems very keen on befriending Nat in particular. If and when she pets the dog, she will notice that it wears a collar with a silver spider pendant on it. If she wants, she can sell it for +1 wp. ETA: I meant sell the pendant, not the puppy. What is wrong with you?! |
