“Not a mistake. Beautiful.” Brent repeated.
Different, in many more ways than one, but Brent was quite firm in the truth of his words. It was hard to imagine a place without many trees. Maybe more ice and snow? And it definitely sounded like ‘the’ Academy, rather than just ‘an’ academy, by her description. For a moment he wondered if there was a way for him to see it, yet the thought of traveling to such a faraway place was both thrilling and terrifying at the same time. Despite traveling around Melrath, he couldn’t imagine leaving it for an extended period of time. What about his friends, his neighbours, the community?
Once Brent had finished with the hard boiled eggs, he handed Malach two and himself the other two. He ate his rather quickly, taking large bites and not thinking much of it before getting some outdoor clothing put together. He was more excited about showing her around the village.
“This one might be warmer,” he said as he offered his fur coat to Malach. He threw over his black cloak for himself and then dug out boots for himself and the old ones of Ted’s. When they were ready to head out, he opened the front door and gestured for Malach to step outside into the blanket of sparkling white snow. Brent would follow through after her, and then offer his arm.
Outside was quite bright with the light reflecting off the snow. There were a few specks in the air and distinct walking paths where people had traversed through the village. Many of the homes and buildings were made of logs. They were clustered together but not packed like in a city. There was also a large open space that in the warmer seasons could be used for festivals or gatherings. Here and there were the occasional evergreen pine tree laden with snow and a few deciduous trees bare of any leaves. Off in the distance one could just make out the general shape of a river, but more noticeably was the wooden palisade-like wall that was built along some of its length. But Brent didn’t lead her to this wall. Instead he pointed out a large wooden building near the open clearing.
“That one is the Alivilda Great Hall. It’s good for gatherings and also for getting the best mead in Melrath.” Brent explained cheerily.
