The summons had come to the infirmary from the Krome estate. There hadn’t been much information in the message itself, just that there had been some type of serious burns acquired, possibly a fever and underlying illness. They had asked specifically for her. Obviously the great care and effort she had put into caring for Elyna during her difficult childbirth had been noticed. It was clear that they trusted her and for that she was glad. They seemed like very nice and genuine people, and if she could somehow help them, it made her work well worth it.
When she had arrived at the house in Adaris, having just walked quite briskly from the infirmary, Malcolm had been unconscious. Rei had to resist asking what happened when she had been brought upstairs to the bedroom to have a look at his wounds. They were so extensive, a large amount of his skin covered with seared flesh, some of it more severely burned in some places. There was a hint of singed hair in the air, and when she felt of his forehead it was blazingly hot. He was raging with fever that was probably not helped by his burnt skin.
In her bag she had brought most everything she could think of for burns, fevers, and pain. Elyna was a Lady, and so Rei would never dream of asking her to fetch things for her. After setting down her bag of supplies, she had helped herself to the bathroom where she found a fresh bucket of cold water sitting by the tub. She had hauled the bucket into the room, surprised by the strength of her arms. Clean cloths had been dipped and strained, then lain out across his exposed skin to help bring down his fever and cleanse the wounds.
When the chill of the rags had dissipated, she took them off and deposited them into a pile. With him seemingly unable to wake, she took a bottle of antiseptic and soaked a rag, working on gently cleaning the more severely burnt areas that had bubbled and developed sores. When they were clean enough by her standards, something that was quite difficult to achieve, she had fished around for some salve she had mixed up before leaving the infirmary. It had many herbs in it- calendula, comfrey, lavender, and aloe among them with a touch of oil to help moisturize the skin.
Rei had brought an extensive supply of bandages. She began applying salve, covering the gravest of areas with a bandage that she laid gently to cover the area without forcing any pressure on it. The more lightly burned areas were left open to the air. It would be hard to do more for him without him being conscious. Herbs for fever and pain he would need to drink by mouth mixed into tea or water. Every once in a while she would soak the rags in cool water again and cover his body to kill some of the heat coming off his flesh. Breaks passed by and that night she never left, taking to a light slumber in a chair at his bedside.

When she had awoken early that morning she had set to soaking and covering him with cool rags again, taking a brief break to go downstairs and get herself a cup of tea along with one for him in case he woke. She dug in her bag for yarrow, elderflower, and some ginger. Sipping on her tea, Rei worked to grind it into a fine powder that she left sitting in the mortar on the table. Out of the corner of her eye she thought she saw movement, then she heard a noise.
Rushing, she came to his bedside. “Try not to move too much, Malcolm. It’s Rei, I’m here with you in your house. You’ve been badly burned.” Rei started removing the wet rags, pushing them off to the side to be used later. “You are also feverish. I will need you to drink something. You must. I know it hurts. I will give you something to ease your pain.” Out of the bag she pulled a small vial of milk of the poppy. It was one of the strongest things they had for pain, but she could tell just from looking at him that he would need it.
“Drink this,” she urged, holding the vial to his lips and gently bracing the back of his head to lift it enough so that he would not choke. It would take only a small amount of the milky liquid to help. When she was satisfied, she quickly moved to the cup of tea and mixed in some of the powder. She sat herself on the edge of the bed, careful not to jar his body or touch him. “Now you must try this. For your fever and you need to stay hydrated. You must try. What I just gave you for your pain will work quickly. Please drink for me.” Rei held the porcelain cup up to his lips, gently tilting it.
