World Development Project: Booze!

That is to say, alcohol.

All right folks, so here's the deal. In trying to develop a bar location, turns out the price list didn't have any booze listed. This prompted Jade and I into discussing making some items for the price list, which was a great idea. So this back burner project started like...a month ago? And the research that has gone into it has proven that there are too many factors to make assumptions of in a fantasy world to just say "here's generic mead for generic pricing." For anyone who hasn't looked into it beyond what brand is on the bottle they're enjoying at the bar or BBQ (guilty...), turns out booze if all types is more of a cultural staple than meets the eye. Everyone who's known this for some time is rolling their eyes, I'm certain... This all amounts to a deceptively simple price list addition that's turning into a pretty considerable project for the site.

Now I know what some of you may be thinking, "So why not just make some generic names and prices and be done with it?"
I'm glad you asked!
1) Ilaren; among her domains, she oversees alcohol; there's literally an Immortal (whoever said alcohol wasn't a gift form god?).
2) That now establishes at least 1 city and 1 religious faction that's hyped about this stuff, how many different things can be fermented and concocted, and drank for a good time, among other things.
3) This impacts the culture of how people interact where booze is present (or the lack thereof!), how the social environment looks like for quite a lot of folks in Idalos, especially those NPCs.
4) The booming success (hehe Ilaren puns) of something like booze, plus it's effects on the mind and body, are something to be taken advantage of everywhere.
5) Because this is fantasy, the generic booze alone (I'm not even discussing the made-up stuff we haven't even gotten around to yet) will impact all the fantastic people of Idalos differently.
6) Within that same element, booze as a story telling element is probably one of the most readily accessible for greasing the development of plots, characters, and conflict (e.g. George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire or the HBO inspired Game of Thrones are basically all about what happens when your king is a drunk, from one perspective at least...); this stuff matters.
7) For some odd reason, as much as we desire escapism and fantasy, we also want it to be constrained to some Earthly boundaries that allow it to still be relatable. Climate, weather, and agriculture are some significant elements of that facilitated realistic fantasy.
8) Within a story like ST's, you know there are merchants or breweries that are vying for monopoly of this stuff, and it can (and will) be very nasty. While we aren't talking about assassinating royalty or divinity, economic competition is a rung on that assassination ladder for sure. In the mundane affairs of mortality, money talks, and booze is a money magnet.
N) And more, I'm certain...

Didn't think you'd be role playing/writing about something like alcohol on a fantasy site where the gods walk among you, ey? Funny how those things work out.
***
So this brings us to the actual project. We all know that developing a unique fantasy beverage is really simple. Take a fantasy ingredient, ferment it with yeast, and behold your new jungle juice, just slap a nel price tag on it (and develop the plant...and the sales location, the NPCs, the other location where this stuff is farmed, etc. in so far as is relevant to the story). What we don't have, and frankly need to develop by some virtue of it will be done "eventually" is the generic list of booze (and, for the sake of all the lovely staff players who are already swamped in development of other things, the respective locations (vineyards, orchards, beekeepers, farms, distilleries, bottle/cask manufacturers, etc), NPCs, and actual product pricing in the value chain that is booze.

My most significant issue in tackling this project solo has been a general lack of information and it being way too much to sift through. This thread ultimately serves as a nexus for the booze related information as it is realized, shared, and developed into the entirety of ST's generic booze listing.

THAT ALL BEIN' SAID, here are the constraints/presumptions I'm working with to bring some sense of uniformity to the development. These are subject to change as new information is added from the community as we come to a closer realization of what booze in Idalos looks like.

Generalizations:
*Dry yeast is everywhere, thus so is booze of some kind (if you bake bread in the city, someone's probably brewing)
*All containers are mass produced and purchased by manufacturers to be properly bottled/casked/etc.
*Idalos has some semblance of science that distillers can mass produce their booze by a process that's repeatable for a consistent product
*To that same logic, mortals have discovered or been gifted with the insight that is "the standard drink." Though they are without the graces of "solo cups", the price list will reflect this measurement when it comes to pricing a particular booze by a respective measurement of volume
*By mundane or magical means, the manufactures have figured out how to seal and preserve their booze for wide scale sales
*Sales are largely made business to business or city to business in bulk. However because it's so wide-spread, 1 type of booze usually has a few substitutes producers so the price is kept consistent (though stays relative to the expenses it costs to make, bottle/cask, and ship the booze).
**That is to say, individual consumers are probably getting their drink at a bar/tavern/inn/eatery - unless they contract a merchant/distiller directly to make an order (for a barrel, cask, etc. basically a new contract).
*There are no trade tariffs on generic booze from city to city (as far as the price list is concerned, local governments/staff will designate otherwise)
*Earth cultured names for booze don't exist in Idalos, nor their materials or processes; cultural names will be replaced with some generic term like "spirit" with an attached booze % (e.g. We ain't got no vodka, cuz that be Eastern-European; we do have some good wine and fine spirits though...basically)
*Booze is generally accessible to anyone with the coin for it (limits on age, sex, race, social status, etc. are locally designated)

World Development Project: Booze!

The going list of all things booze related, and other notes as to why some items are not included. Other designations are made here as well:

Generic Booze: a vision
This list contains all the types of generic alcohol available across Idalos. Barring legal restrictions, these items are made and sold across the entirety of Idalos, all of which likely come from a very limited set of producers. While these producers may be at odds with one another, the general population of Idalos is generally careless when it comes to noticing any sort of distinction in the "brand" they're drinking. Locales that sell alcohol likely have access to most of the items on this list, though the respective distiller may vary from city-to-city (region-to-region, with exceptions of some political barriers, etc).

The generic list right now:
Beer:
*Ales
*Lagers

Wine:
*Reds
*Whites
*Sweets

Spirits:
*generic starch spirit (ST's vodka-thru-moonshine selection)
*Rum

Other "malts??":
*Cider
*Mead
*generic milk malt?

World Development Project: Booze!

Hi Ilied,

Thanks for bringing up this subject! 10 points for your Ilaren puns. ;)

I'd like to note that Kingdom has created an absolutely fantastic alcohol list and has been kind enough to allow others to use it for their locations (thank you, love). I also have plans to create a local beer list for Rharne.

I think that what might be fun is for folks to submit additional suggestions for types of white and red wines. I'm also very open to working with you and others on Rharne's local beer list.

Common Drinks

Clean Water 2cn a mug 1sn a flagon Clean drinking water. Useful for quenching thirst, survival, or sobering up.
Ale 1sn a mug 6sn a flagon A cheap drink brewed from barley or oats, or any number of different grains.
Beer3sn a mug2gn a flagonRich, hoppy flavours scented with allspice, juniper, resin, apples, bread-crumbs, sage, lavender, gentian, cinnamon, or laurel. These are usually high-flavoured beverages with a strong, natural taste.
Cider5sn a mug3gn a flagonA bitter-sweet flavour achieved by pouring water onto apples and steeping them to perfection. Fresh, crisp, and strong-flavoured, cider can be served cold, at room temperature, or heated.
Mead1gn a mug6gn a flagonA sweet alcoholic drink enjoyed by people from all classes, mead is and brewed using honey.
Rum1gn a shot10gn a bottleMade from sugarcane juice and molasses and distilled into a clear liquid before it is aged in oak barrels, producing the dark, amber colour rum is famous for. It has a smoky, sweet taste and is very popular among sailors.
Vodka2gn a shot15gn a bottleCrisp and distilled for volume rather than flavour, vodka has no distinctive taste, and can best be described as cold and clean, going down smoothly. This spirit is clear having no colour and is typically drunk straight, with a subtle after taste and strong bite.
Brandy2gn a shot20gn a bottleAn after dinner drink of the best quality and highest proofing, this brandy will leave a warm feeling in the mouth and stomach upon consumption.
Whiskey 2gn a shot30gn a bottleMade from fermented grain-mash including barley, corn, rye, and wheat. Whiskey is aged over time in wooden crates generally made of charred white oak important from different regions across Idalos.

White Wine

Ashan’s Twilight6sn per Glass4gn per BottleA wine low in alcohol that is cheap and popular. It has a pleasant taste and is grown, harvested, and vinted in the hottest parts of Idalos. Though it is mass produced most of the year, Ashan’s Twilight is a very widely respected wine.
Saun’s Heat8sn per Glass6gn per BottleA spicy concoction made by the Biqaj and often kept by the barrel loads upon their ships. This is an aged, dry wine with a strong hint of flavour that goes great with seafood dishes.
Shimmering Koriel10sn per Glass8gn per BottleThe added flavours of pomelos and kumquats give this straw coloured, sweet, full-bodied wine its unique and delicious taste. Imported from areas of eastern Idalos, this wine is crafted and bottled every four arcs, making it hard to come by outside of the east.
Sparkling White2gn per Glass13gn per BottleVibrant and bubbly in aroma and flavour, this sparkling wine is herbaceous, flavoursome, and will ensnare the senses with its hints of citrus and passionfruit.
Kuwasa3gn per Glass15gn per BottleA dessert wine from the shores of Desnind with special aromas of mandarin and apricot with a hint of lemon zest.
Appiden4gn per Glass17gn per BottleRich and savoury flavours loaded with the aromas of intense, ripe pears and Ymiden apples.
Smof8gn per Glass26gn per BottleA crowd favourite with ripe peach and aromatic flavours, make this one of the best mid-range wines in all of Idalos. Its subtle spices make this the perfect white wine for a cold day.
Moseke’s Harvest13gn per Glass35gn per BottleInspired by the tastes of nature, crafters of this wine import green grapes from the far reaches of Idalos to bring together the ‘tastes of the world’. A crisp, refreshing vintage that will inspire anyone's taste-buds.
Queen25gn per Glass50gn per BottleA strong wine with a sharp taste blended with hints of kiwi fruit, mangosteen, and lychee. This is known as the queen of wines, best served with a meal fit for a king.
White Diamond40gn per Glass100gn per BottleA sweet wine best served cold, high in alcohol and far too easy to drink, this white wine tastes just like a high quality grape juice and has been describe as ‘the taste of Saun in a bottle’. Partnered well with fish.

Red Wine

Stone Creek6sn per Glass4gn per BottleAn inexpensive red wine from the city of Rharne with enticing aromas and flavours of wild blackcurrant with overtones of black pepper and spices best served with red meat, wild game, and stews.
Venora Rose8sn per Glass6gn per BottleImported all around the world from the sunny shores of Rynmere, Venora Rose is grown on the slopes of ‘Nora’s Rest’ where the vines get just the right mix of cool air and warm sunshine. This light, red rose is best served with Saun fruits and light meals.
Low Hanging Zemoni10sn per Glass8gn per BottleCrafted from the shores of Ne'haer, this wine is excellent as a before-or-after-dinner drink. This deeply coloured wine of purples and reds is sweet and delectable. Its elegant smoothness is due to a low acid content, delivering a flavour that will leave most yearning for more.
Acripae2gn per Glass13gn per BottleA wine that evokes legend and fascination with its brilliant tastes of purple grapes from the mysterious lands of Desnind. It shines with noticeable hints of garnet-red and flashes of amber. Acripae can be a bitter tasting wine due to its acidity. However, it is a wine that exudes glory, nobility and power.
Nanutha3gn per Glass15gn per BottleNanutha is a drink best served chilled. It is a drink with a high alcohol content that is bound to get even the most tolerant tipsy after a few glasses. This wine is meant as a dessert drink, with its intense notes of red fruits and herbal undertones. Some say this wine is a true serum.
Vithella4gn per Glass17gn per BottleImportant from the Avriel City, Athart, Vithella holds notes of spicy and herbaceous undertones that go great with a beef entree. It sparkles with brilliant reds and has low alcohol content for maximum enjoyment.
Red Aìda8gn per Glass26gn per BottleNamed after the Sev'ryn's meaning for 'Love', Red Aida is a wine imported from the lands of Desnind and crafted by the people themselves. This drink is high in alcohol content and contains a chemical that is known to bring about “feel good” emotions and cause mild hallucinations. The wine itself is balanced between tartness and sweet and is great as an after dinner drink.
Ruby Shav13gn per Glass35gn per BottleThis wine is both delectable in taste and appearance, giving off a very transparent shade of ruby red. Given at most celebrations, Ruby Shav has undertones of acai berry mixed with hints of orange and starfruit and is mostly produced and exported from Hiladrith.
Sesser’s Blend25gn per Glass50gn per BottleNamed after Syroa's mark, this wine has a chemical in it that causes strong hallucinations combined with herbal ingredients that causes the body to become both hypersensitive and sluggish, verging on paralytic. The wine does not have a high alcohol content and is more often used for fast acting drunkenness than enjoyment. The taste is quite bitter, though most seem to enjoy it.
Gyara40gn per Glass100gn per BottleGyara is a high class wine made by the citizen of Rharne . Its quality of smoothness coupled with its luxurious colour and blend make it a drink preferred by the noble class. The process to make the wine takes an extensive amount of time, making it one of the most expensive wines in the world.

World Development Project: Booze! [Manufacturing]

This post lists booze production and sales origins for the types of generic booze on our list by city (i.e. there is a distiller in the city it's listed under). This listing does not mean that the distiller is legally sanctioned or approved of for their work, but that they exist. For whatever reasons, people turning a blind eye, commercial success, etc., they haven't been snuffed out by competition or authorities of any sort (the divine included).

Distilleries belonging to surrounding territories of a city will be listed under their city for the sake of simplicity (i.e. all of Rynmere's booze will be listed under Andaris with the details of distillery locations being locally developed as belonging to a territory outside of Andaris' city proper, the territories surrounding Ne'haer and the city itself, etc.).

Cities that don't have any production will be marked as "none" with a tag-line with the IC justification of why this is that makes the existence of such a thing "impossible" in the eyes of the NPCs who oversee booze; PCs are always welcomed to try to make changes in-game.

World Development Project: Booze!

Okay so now that all of the staples posts are done... here are some of my ramblings and guess work as we try to discuss and organize this thing.

TL;DR: This post is mostly about grape viability across Idalos regarding the terrain/climate on the basis of the site's world map. It's guesswork, but with so many cities not fleshed out just yet, there're going to be some assumptions.

Kingdom's list gives us some insight into her idea of what the Idalos wine country might look like. A generalization can be a northern wine belt that runs around the perimeter of Andaris-Rharne-Rhakros?-Ne'haer-Argos?-Hiladrith-Andaris. With Kingdom's development in works and canon, that puts some major vineyards on the map all ready. The below are a bunch of considerations for what might be considerable "wine country" across Idalos. Some notes are made regarding the agricultural habits of respective peoples and cultures of these cities in addition to terrain/climate. The considerations do however neglect what's going on with other flora.

With regards to this "northern belt" my guesses would be that Rharne's alcohol production likely dominates anything in its region regarding more generic wine productions, and given the Gyara red is a fierce competitor in specialty wines (something for more local development). The local cities around Rharne in East Idalos might have vineyards that are even traceable back to Rharne depending on how dominant powers at work might be when it comes to ownership of the vineyards. Grape production closer to the Hot Lands is probably lesser with it being too hot or arid, though Yaralon might do well enough with the mountains that block off the Hot Lands in the east if weather fairs well.

The other thing about East Idalos is the presence of the Eternal Empire/Korlasir. It seems likely to maintain the empire, they'd want some debauchery like all the rest and people will seek conquest in wine as they would anything else. This might give rise to more competition with Rharne's vineyards, and even create disputes for everything between the two cities regarding the topic of grapes and wine. Factor in the other cities as well that are trying to maintain an economy as much as they are safety from Raskalarn's clutch.

Ivorian is it's own mystery...

In the west, anything north of Hiladrith might lack terrain for wine. Argos might be the furthest point to the west good for wine, since the closer we get to Uthaldria the crazier the magic and monsters get, even floral life is probably threatened or cannibalistic. The smaller desert in the west is another suggestion of more arid climate. Rhakros's terrain (from the map that is) starts to become more hills/small mountains but might still be suitable if there are some open enough areas, even for smaller vineyards.

All of Southern Idalos seems very mountainous or full of hills, though the low lands that line the middle might be suitable. Moseke's presence in Desnind IC justifies just about anything growing there. Augiery has some more open terrain for grape vines, if it isn't too cold being that far south/close to Oscillus. The other thing about Augiery is whether or not the Naerikk would have kept grapes or turned over the soil for other grains and things to feed the militant force they seek to bolster. Quacia might not do well with grapes...mountains, cold.

No one really knows Doliene even exists... and Strosdyn seems like another mystery being an island, though grape growth is probably likely if it's open enough.

With white being icy/snow, Melrath might still be viable for wine if the grapes are incredibly hardy. Anyone seeking grapes suitable to that environment might actually look to Andaris for grape vines if Melrath isn't given a hardy grape by default for wine. The same can likely be said for Nekhet if it has grapes at all.

Aaand Athart just seems fine with plenty of space for wine country and seemingly no immediate competitors. Further north of the city might be a bit too arid, but nearer it seems very green.
