Re: The Sorrow of Death

As Ari'sora worked, obeying the instructions the man had given her about how to treat the woman who was choking, Mi'zuri stood to one side, demanding to know what she thought she was doing, and if she really thought that it would help. She continued to say that all she was going to do was make things worse, and say that she should stop before she killed the woman. But her sister's voice was shrill, and breathless with fear and worry. So although her sister's words hurt, and ate at her shaky sense of self confidence, she knew that Mi'zuri wasn't doubting her ability to follow instruction as much as she was worried about what would happen if the woman died despite her attempts to help. Would she be blamed if she failed the woman? And if so, would she be punished for her failure? Ari'sora shuddered to think of what the punishment for accidentally killing someone might be.

But that fear wasn't enough to stop her, and in the end, her efforts seemed to pay off. At the very least, she thought they were. Something shot out of the woman's mouth after the second blow, and the woman seemed to be able to breathe after that. Ari'sora didn't have long to feel happy that she had done something right for a change.

"Look out!" her sister called in alarm.

Ari'sora jumped, turning to see what had caused her sister to call out like that. She had mere trills to take in the fact that a giant wave was heading their way. A giant wave that had seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Her eyes widened, and she curled herself around the woman she had been trying to help in a futile effort to protect her from the rushing water. Then the wave was upon them, drenching them all.

Salt water stung her eyes fiercely as she sputtered, and gasped for breath. Then she began to shiver. The water was ice cold. Or perhaps it was the chill of the season that made it feel that way. Either way, the effect had shocked the breath out of her.

"Are you okay?" Ari'sora asked the woman she had been trying to help earlier when she could speak.

The little girl Ari'sora had seen earlier told her father that Vri was there. Ari'sora looked up in confusion, and sure enough, there were three people that she recognized from one of the books she had read over the arcs; Vri, Pier, and Pre were standing among them...and they were just as drenched as the rest of them were.

As Ari'sora stared wide eyed, doubting the proof of her own eyes, the man bowed, and introduced his sisters, Pier, and Pre. One of the women looked vaguely amused...but the other was clearly angry at their current situation. And who could blame them, really? Ari'sora wasn't happy, either. She hated it when her wings were wet. The two sisters exchanged a frightened, horrified glance.

"She did it." Mi'zuri said quickly, pointing at Ari'sora.

Ari'sora paled, her eyes widening in shock as she stared at her sister in horror.

"No, I..."

Ari'sora fell silent, not completing her protest. What was the use? Whenever her sister had done something that would have gotten her into trouble in the past, she always panicked, and blamed it on her. Ren'zar, and their mother always believed her, and punished her for whatever her sister had done. Why should this be any different? Neither of them had been responsible for the wave of water that had crashed over them, but Mi'zuri was in panic mode. And blaming Ari'sora had always gotten her out of trouble in the past, so she fell back on it now. Ari'sora was used to taking the blame for her sister's antics, so she knew that any protests on her part would only make the punishment worse.

"I'm sorry." she said softly, her voice barely more than a whisper in her dread over what kind of punishment three angry Immortals might give her over something like this.

The young girl's father introduced himself as Tristan Venora, as he spoke to the three Immortals. Ari'sora barely registered what he said, but she did get the point of his words; he was offering to help.

"Is there anything I can do to help?" she offered.

It was a most odd and peculiar moment when time seemed to almost stop and look at them. As the wave of water hit, it poured over everyone present, mortal and Immortal alike. Tristan Venora spoke up and Vri looked at him. It was not every trial that one met an Immortal, especially not one with water dripping down his face and off his nose. That was an unusual circumstance, and then some. Just for a moment, there was something resembling a twinkle of almost amusement in Vri's eyes as he turned to look down at Ayla. The young girl grinned at him and she said, quiet and almost serious, but teasing at the same time. "Everyone's all wet!" Vri smiled down at her, a fond look on his face.

"You are quite correct, yes." Turning his attention to her father, Vri's eyes grew more serious. "She is a delightful child. You should be very proud. Syroa chose well," he said, and then shook his head. "There is no need for you to worry. Please, why don't you both have a seat?" He gestured to the seats suggesting that both Ari'sora and Tristan sat if they felt so inclined. Ayla moved where Tristan did, but the young child was very relaxed, albeit wide eyed at the situation they were in. As Vri spoke to the Venoras, the sisters turned their attention to the mortal siblings.

            "That is not true,"
"That is not true," the twin Immortals spoke together. The both looked at both Mi'zuri and Ari'sora. It seemed like the two Immortals were judging both of the mortal women. After all, they were both lying, neither one of them telling the truth in what they said. One of the Immortal women looked at Mi'zuri and the other at Ari'sora, their eyes seeming to bore into the very souls of the two mortal females.

"Do not lie to us, others, or yourselves,"
"Do not lie to us, others, or yourselves," they said and both mortal women found themselves bathed in a warm light. It wasn't comforting, nor was it harsh. It was not anything except truth - and therefore, it was stark and unyielding.

Ayla looked at what was happening and she tugged on Tristan's arm. "Daddy, that nice lady was just being nice."

Vri looked around at both events and nodded his head. "Would you care to join us, Ari'sora?" He didn't explain how he knew her name, but he most certainly did. Whichever of them sat with him or not, while the twins moved over to assess, it seemed, the damage done, Vri looked at Tristan and Ari'sora. "So, one of you called us here. Do either of you know who?"

He didn't seem angry or upset, intrigued, perhaps. Of the man who had created the wave, there was no sign, but the two of them might notice that they were bone dry, as was Ayla and the three Immortals. Mi'zuri was not. "And more importantly," Vri continued. "why?"

The young girl seemed to be quite amused by the fact that everyone was now soaked, and as Ari'sora watched them, Vri himself seemed to be slightly amused. Or perhaps it was the child herself that amused him. His words seemed to suggest as much. Ari'sora took note of the fact that Vri's next words seemed to suggest that Syroa was connected to the child in some way. Maybe even the child's mother, unless she was missing something. But while interesting, that fact was neither here nor there, and Ari'sora's attention was quickly dragged to the other two Immortals.

Ari'sora and Mizuri's eyes widened in unison as they found themselves bathed in light, and under the direct gaze of the twin Immortals. Then Pier and Pre spoke in unison, sending a chill down both of their spines. While their initial reaction was the same, how they responded was not.

Ari'sora took the Immortals' words to heart. While she had started to protest Mi'zuri's accusation, she had not followed through on it and stood up for herself. Her words themselves were not a lie; she was sorry for any discomfort everyone might feel due to being soaked whether the wave had been her fault or not. And her desire to help if she was able to was real. But a lie of omission was still a lie, and she acknowledged this.

"In the future, I will not." Ari'sora said softly.

It was a promise to the Immortals who had taken her to task...but it was also a promise to herself. In the future, if she knew the truth, she would tell it. She was done with lies. Mi'zuri blushed in embarrassment at having been caught in a lie, but she made no similar promises.

"Blaming my sister has often gotten me out of trouble in the past." she said simply.

That was completely true, but her tone held no indication if she would heed the Immortal twins' words in the future. She herself didn't know if she would ever lie again or not, so she wasn't ready to make any such promises. Perhaps that was telling because when Vri asked if Ari'sora would join them, he did not ask Mi'zuri to join them as well. And while the others were now dry, Mi'zuri was not.

Ari'sora thanked Vri as she took the seat that he offered her. She didn't know how he knew her name, but she didn't question it. Mi'zuri moved to stand behind Ari'sora out of curiosity. When Vri told them that one of them had summoned the Immortals here, and asked them if they knew who had summoned them, and why, Ari'sora's eyes widened. She hadn't known it was even possible for a mortal to summon an Immortal.

"It wasn't me...or, at least I don't think it was. I didn't try to summon you, so if something I did is what summoned you, it was unintentional, and I am sorry for any trouble it may have caused. I don't know why you were summoned either."

That was the complete truth. Mi'zuri didn't say anything, not wanting to draw attention to herself. But it was obvious from her expression that she hadn't tried to summon them either. Ari'sora looked at Tristan and his daughter curiously.

"Do you know who summoned them? Or why?"

When Vri looked at him, with water dripping down his face, Tristan couldn’t help but smirk a little because this was a highly unusual sight – in fact, he had not thought that he would ever see something like that – and because Vri was smirking as well. He was totally different from what he had thought the Immortal of Death would be like. He had thought that the Immortal of Death would constantly be sad and depressed and wear black and delight in hurting people. He seemed like a really nice person though – and what more, he liked Ayla!

When his daughter remarked that everybody was all wet, he laughed. “That we are!” he agreed, his blue eyes twinkling with bemusement before he turned to speak with the Immortal again. “I am very proud of her!” he replied. From the look on his face it was obvious how much he loved his little daughter. Having said that, the duke who was quite wet as well took a seat. Just like his daughter, Tristan was relaxed, although his eyes were a bit wide as well.

When Pier and Pre addressed Ari’sora and her siblings, he watched them, furrowing his brow, suddenly a little bit worried. He was about to open his mouth and say something, when Ari’sora promised that she would not lie again in the future. “I think she’s okay, Ayla”, he whispered to his daughter and smiled reassuringly at her. “Your aunts were just telling her sister and her not to lie. I tell people the same, don’t I?” he asked, his eyes twinkling.

When Vri wanted to know who had summoned him and his sisters, he looked from the Immortals to Ari’sora and her sister and back in confusion, furrowing his brow somewhat thoughtfully before he admitted, “I think that I did. Not on purpose though!” he quickly added in an apologetic tone in case the three Immortals decided to get mad at him after all because he was taking up their precious time. “It happens sometimes. I can’t really help it”, he said. He was not bragging, he was not exaggerating anything, he was not lying, he was saying the truth and nothing but the truth.

Tristan had attracted more Immortals than most. He had shared Ilaren’s and Syroa’s bed (although he hadn’t found out that it had been Syroa until much later). He had been marked by Zanik and Vhalar, and even Aelig had decided to mess with his life several times.

And then there were of course his three newest Immortal acquaintances. Why had he called them though? He wasn’t completely sure! Did it have something to do with the fact that he was so worried about the world sometimes? Was it because he embodied their domains – especially Vri’s domains - so well? He had experienced it all, love, sadness, death (the suicide of his beloved younger brother, Teddy, that he still struggled with sometimes, among them). He had witnessed what he had considered to be grave injustice. So many had died, in the civil war and when his friend King Cassander had decided to go mad and ordered the mage executions. He’d never forget what had happened.

“I’m not completely sure why I called you”, he told them. “It probably has something to do with what happened though, my love and my concern for my family and Idalos and all those people that I lost, all the things that have happened …” He fell silent abruptly. His gaze briefly went to the man and the woman that had been in danger before, checking if they were really okay, before he looked at the Immortals again. He was waiting for them to say something because he was, he had to admit, at a bit of a loss, and he had no idea what would happen now and how they would react.

They spoke of truth, and life, and all of them - or almost all of them sat around the table together. Three Immortals, two mortals and a mortalborn child. The twins loked at Ari'sora and then looked back to her sister. Both of them, then, spoke to her, ignoring Mi'zuri entirely.

"Truth. It is important. It brings Justice. Lies, even silent ones, they bring injustice. You understand this."
"Truth. It is important. It brings Justice. Lies, even silent ones, they bring injustice. You understand this."

They turned their attention then to Mi'zuri and spoke. Their voices chimed together in harsh reality.

"You understand this too. You choose self over other. Lie over truth."
"You understand this too. You choose self over other. Lie over truth."

There was something entirely unworldly about them - of course - when they spoke their whole bodies moved in exact unison, they even breathed together in perfect synchrony. At the lack of apology from Mi'zuri, they were obviously affronted but, for the moment, they said nothing more.

Vri, meanwhile, looked at Tristan and then he spoke to the young man. "You've changed, Tristan Venora," he said. He looked at Ayla and at Tristan and his gaze was sad. " you have very much changed." Without doubt, in Vri's endlessly swirling and apparently bottomless eyes. "I think you did call me here. But not them." He motioned to the twins. "I think maybe she called them." The she in question, of course, was Ari'sora. Vri looked at Tristan and he frowned, as though in thought. Ayla - apparently unconcerned with the fact that this was an Immortal smiled. "You like my Daddy, don't you?" Vri nodded and smiled.

"I do," he confirmed. "I very much do." That said he turned to Tristan. "I would make you an offer, Tristan Venora." He smiled. "I would bestow on you my blessing. You know what this means, and I will not insult you by explaining more. But if you wish it." And then he shrugged slightly. "Then it is yours."

The twins looked at Ari'sora and they spoke, again, in unison. It was odd. Two conversations going on, but they all three Immortals seemed to be working in tandem.

"We would offer the same to you, our blessing. Our truth."
"We would offer the same to you, our blessing. Our truth."

Both offers - from all three Immortals - seemed genuine. Ayla watched, wide-eyed, but said nothing.

For a moment, Tristan focused his attention on Pier and Pre as the two Immortals were rather fascinating to watch. They said exactly the same things and moved in unison on top of it. He couldn’t help but wonder if it was a twin thing or an immortal thing. Hart was the closest thing he had to a twin, but he doubted that he’d be able to do that no matter how hard he tried!

He quickly turned to face Vri again though, looking rather serious as he did so. When the Immortal remarked that he had changed, he didn’t say anything, but only nodded his head because he didn’t think that it would be necessary for him to comment on that.

He had changed though. Three arcs earlier, he had been a somewhat pampered noble who created weird art and didn’t have to worry about anything. He had had a cat and a slave – he had approved of slavery back then – and then everything had been different, within the blink of an eye …

Sometimes, the speed with which his life had changed made him feel a little strange, to be honest.

“I didn’t?” he mouthed as Vri informed him that he hadn’t called the twins and glanced at Pier and Pre again for a moment before he smiled at the Immortal of Death. Had he just heard correctly? Vri liked him? He liked him very much – and he wanted to offer him his blessing on top of it? His heart nearly skipped a beat, and then the young man who had been through a lot of bad things recently smiled even more, a pure bright and happy smile before he abruptly grew a bit more serious yet again.

“I know what it means”, he confirmed. Faith had Vri’s blessing, the woman that he had loved and that he had thought had died in his arms after she had given birth to their child (it had just been Syroa in disguise though). “And I would be honored to accept your blessing, Vri, with everything that it entails. I will serve you as best as I can.”

He really meant what he said. He knew what Vri’s blessing was all about. He would accept every aspect it, wholeheartedly, and do what he could to make the Immortal happy.

Ari'sora's eyes widened in surprise when the man said that he might have summoned the Immortals. Why would anyone do such a thing? But he didn't seem to know exactly why he had summoned the Immortals either.

Ari'sora was quickly distracted from the matter when Pier and Pre spoke to her. They spoke of justice and injustice, and the importance of truth. She agreed with what they were saying very strongly, and she nodded in agreement. It was much harder to react to any situation if you didn't know the truth of it, after all. That was how mistakes were made, and depending on the situation...those mistakes could hurt people. Lies could hurt people too...even the ones that were meant to help someone. Once again she felt a strong sense of resolve rise up in her. She was done with lies.

Mi'zuri reacted much differently than her half sister did. Rather than realize she was in the wrong, she got defensive.

"What's wrong with that?" she demanded.

"Choosing self over others, I mean. People do it all the time. It's only natural to want to protect yourself and the people you care about the most over others." she insisted.

Although she didn't say it outright, Ari'sora could hear the unsaid "And I just don't care about my sister enough to stand up for her if it puts me at risk." Ari'sora wasn't sure what she thought about that. It did explain a lot of things about her half sister, though. She tried to sort out her own thought until a stray bit of conversation made her look over at Vri in wide eyed shock and confusion.

He thought that she had summoned Pier and Pre somehow? How? What had she done...or not done that caused them to be summoned? And perhaps more importantly...were they upset by the fact that she had managed to summon them somehow?

Vri offered his blessing to Tristan, and the man accepted it. When the Twins turned to her and offered her their blessing trills later, Ari'sora's eyes widened. It would be an honor to serve them, and her first thought was to accept immediately. But she thought that perhaps they would not want that. Truth was their domain, after all. Wouldn't they want her to be certain she wanted to accept the blessing and all that it meant? So she thought about it for a few bits, considering what it would mean to be blessed by Pier and Pre, and what it would mean to serve them. Then she nodded.

"I would be honored to accept your blessing." she said softly, but with a firm conviction in her voice.

"I will serve you...and the truth the best way I can."

One thing - there are no records that I can find on your CS regarding any renown reward past 50. If you've claimed them - could you pop up a post in the PSF asking for a Wiki update with links? I hope you've enjoyed this thread - I very much did. It's lovely to see Tristan in a parent role - you play him as so easily falling into that, it's wonderful. Great writing - well done!
