[Kindness Trial] Treasured Treat

Seira looked around the house with a resigned sigh. It had been a while since she and Seira had done much in the way of cleaning the house, and it very definitely showed. Not that anything was disgustingly dirty or anything, but...there was a light but visible coat of dust on most of the surfaces that didn't get disturbed on a regular basis. There were a few drips on the floor in the kitchen where someone had spilled something and missed a spot when cleaning it up. And there were other similar signs that it was time for a good cleaning.

Seri walked up behind her, and grimaced when she noticed what Seira had been looking at.

"It's time, isn't it?"

Seira simply nodded.

"We might as well get started. The faster we get started, the faster we'll get the house cleaned, and we'll be able to do something else."

Seri nodded in agreement.

"Let's start with the dusting."

Having made their decision of where to start, the twins went to get the dust cloths that they would need. They started in the main living area and got to work. Seira atarted at one end of the room, and Seri started at the other. Every wooden surface was given a good dusting. When there were books, decorations, or anything else sitting on the surfaces they were dusting, they were picked up and dusted. Then they dusted the spot under the item in question. If it belonged where it had been, they put it back. If it did not, they put it where it did belong.

When they were finished with the dusting, they fluffed the cushions, and checked under them for crumbs. They made a small game of that task by seeing who could find the most crumbs. Seri won that little contest. Fortunately, there weren't many to be found, and the chore was finished quickly.

The next thing they decided to do was the windows. They had already dusted the windowsills when they had tackled the dusting, so that was one thing that didn't need doing. So once they had the supplies they needed to clean the windows, they split up and each washed a different window. That became a contest too; who could wash the most windows in the room? Seira won that contest, making it one win for each of them.

Once they finished cleaning the family area, they moved on to the kitchen. They split the work between them, and when they could, they made little contests out of the chores in order to make the work a little more interesting. Seira and Seri tackled the work one room at a time, cleaning everything that needed to be cleaned in one room before moving on to the next. When needed, furniture was moved so that they could clean underneath it. Between the two of them, it only took them six breaks to clean the house. Both of them were tired, and their arms ached from all of the scrubbing and heavy lifting they had done, but they had a feeling of accomplishment that they had gotten the necessary task done.

            Re: [Kindness Trial] Treasured Treat

The animals had finished their breakfasts breaks ago, and Maerin sat at Seira's feet, begging for a treat. Seira indulged her, and watched her obvious enthusiasm as she devoured the treat. Knowing that the other animals would probably want something as well, she gave them each a small treat. Then she frowned. The cleaning was finished, but Seira had a nagging suspicion that there was something else that needed to be done.

"Do you have the feeling that we're forgetting something?" Seira asked her twin as she looked around to see if they had missed anything that needed to be cleaned.

            Seri frowned.

"Now that you mention it, yes. But we cleaned everything. I know that we did."

Seri's eyes widened as she thought of something.

"When was the last time that any of us went shopping for food?" she asked.

Seira frowned. She knew that she and Seri hadn't gone in several trials. When she went to check what they had to eat, she realized that it was time to do some shopping.

"That must be what we were forgetting." Seira told her twin.

After cleaning the house they were all dusty and sweaty, so they cleaned themselves up a bit. When they had done that, Seira made a list of everything that they needed. Then it was time to head out and get their errands done. As they made their way to the market, Seira told Seri what they would need to buy.

"Why don't we split the errands up the same way we did the cleaning?" Seri suggested.

"I can get the soap, and the cleaning products that we're low on while you get the food? And we can meet over by Taryn's stall when we're finished?"

Taryn was one of their friends from school. Her family had a stall at the market where they sold wooden beads, toys, and figurines. Taryn often worked there to help her family out when she could. It was a good place to meet up at since they both knew where it was. And it would give them a chance to get caught up with their friend.

"That sounds good to me. It will be nice to see Taryn again."

When they arrived at the market, they split up. Seira made her way over towards the food stalls. The smells were incredible. One stall was selling freshly baked bread, and the enticing scent made Seira's mouth water. She stopped there to pick out a few loaves of bread. Another stall had some eggs that would be good for breakfast the next trial, so she stopped there as well. A third was selling several kinds of fruit while yet another was selling wheels of cheese.

Once Seira had made her purchases, she made her way over to Taryn's stall. Seri was already waiting for her when she arrived. Seira smiled at them as she headed over to greet her friend.

"Taryn says that she's met someone." Seri said with a grin while Taryn blushed.

"His name's Erik, and he's a painter, and we've already talked about him painting some of the things that we sell here. He's really nice, and he brings me flowers every time he comes to visit. His mother is a gardener, and his father is a painter like he is."

Seira was happy for her friend. Taryn was from a big family, and she wanted to have a big family of her own. Meeting someone special was the first step towards that goal.

"He does sound nice." Seira said as she congratulated her friend.

They spoke for a little while longer before they had to get hone with the food. As they passed through the food stalls once more, the sweet scent of freshly baked fruit tarts caught their attention. Seira looked at her twin. Seri looked back, and they grinned. Then they followed their noses, and made their way over to the stall where the scent was coming from.

Seira and Seri rarely indulged themselves with sweet treats. It wasn't that they didn't like them, but they were on a limited budget. And while they could afford to treat themselves at times, they usually preferred to save their money until they had enough for a bigger treat. Something that they could enjoy for far longer than a pastry or something similar. They were also careful to save some of their spare money up against a time when they might need it. Their reluctance to spend money on "meaningless" treats came from their arcs on the streets of Rynmere before they had met their mother. And if they did decide that they wanted an edible treat...they almost always ended up buying a treat for their pets instead. That way they could indulge their beloved pets and themselves at the same time as they watched their pets enjoy their treat.

But totrial was different. They had spent the entire morning cleaning the house for their mother, and they had spent the last few breaks doing the shopping that needed to be done. As a result, they were tired and hungry. And the sweet smell of fresh fruit tarts was simply too good to resist.

                      Re: [Kindness Trial] Treasured Treat

In silent agreement, the twins approached the stall, and took a closer look at what was available. Everything looked good, so it took a while for them to decide what they wanted. Seira bought a berry tart for herself. After several more bits, Seri bought a berry tart as well, but the mix of berries that had been put into her tart was different than the one Seira had chosen for herself.

Once they had both made their purchases, Seira and Seri began to look for a quiet spot where they could enjoy their treats in peace. A woman was watching them. She looked to be about the same age that they were, but she was dressed in little more than rags. She looked hungry, but if appearances meant anything, the woman would not be able to afford anything sold at this stall. Or in the Earth Quarter, more likely than not. The twins exchanged glances. Seeing the woman reminded them of their own time on the streets when they were younger. Had Vivian not come into their lives, this woman might well have been them.

Seira approached the woman slowly. Seri was right at her side. Even without discussing it, they were of the same mind in their sudden decision. The woman's eyes were wary and filled with despair as she watched them approach, but she held her ground. Seira offered the woman her tart. Seri did the same, mirroring her movements. The woman stared at them for several trills, searching for any signs that this was a trap of some kind. But there were none since it wasn't a trap. And after a short while, the woman took the offered tarts, and ate them quickly. Seira exchanged a glance with Seri as the woman ate the tarts.

When the woman had finished eating, Seira offered her the bags of food that she was holding. The woman stared at her warily for several trills. But she did take the offering.

                      "Thank you." she whispered.

Then she was gone, vanished into the crowd. Seira smiled. It felt good to do something for the woman who might well have been her had her life gone differently.

"We'll have to go shopping again." Seri pointed out.

                      Seira nodded.

                      "It was worth it."

                      Seri nodded.

"Yeah. It was. I'm glad that we were able to help her."

Seira nodded again. Word had gotten out that Ilaren had asked everyone to commit an act of kindness totrial and dedicate it to her by lighting a candle in the Lightning Cathedral. She had known that in the back of her head, but that thought hadn't even occurred to her as she had offered the woman her food.

"We should probably go to the Lightning Cathedral before we do the rest of our shopping." Seira said after a few bits.

                      Seri's eyes widened.

                      "Yeah...I guess we should."

It was obvious to Seira that Seri hadn't been thinking about the request to do something kind for someone else when she'd given the woman her tart either. They walked to the Lightning Cathedral in silence. When they arrived, they paused to admire the exterior of the building. The white stone, ornate carvings, and arches were a very impressive sight.

After a few bits, they entered the prayer chamber. A priestess greeted them quietly as Seira and Seri looked around for an unused alcove so that they could light a candle. When they found one, Seira and Seri each took an unlit candle. Then they watched the flickering candles for several bits. Each one was a symbol of hope, and to see so many was an awe inspiring sight.

Ever so carefully, Seira held the wick of her own candle over the flame of one of the ones that were already burning so that it too would catch on fire. Then she held the now burning in her hand.

"My sister and I helped someone totrial, Ilaren. When we finished our food shopping, we decided to treat ourselves with fruit tarts. But there was a woman watching us as we looked for a spot to eat them in. She was less fortunate than we were, and she looked hungry, so we gave her our fruit tarts, and the food that we had bought. By lighting this candle, I dedicate this act of kindness to you." she said quietly.

Then she set the candle down among the others. She felt a bit weird praying to Ilaren, or any Immortal for that matter. She wasn't sure that Ilaren would hear her prayer, and even if she did, surely she had better things to do than care what Seira did or did not do. And yet...Ilaren had asked people to do this, so she did. Beside her, she could hear Seri offering her own prayer to Ilaren. When Seri finished, she too set her candle down among the others.

"Are you ready to go?" she asked Seira quietly.

Seira nodded. They had more shopping to do now that they had given the food they'd bought to that woman. With one final glance at the candles they had just lit, Seira and Seri headed back towards the market.

Consequences: One of the priestesses approach Seira and Seri at the end of their prayer, and smiles kindly at them. She informs them that the next time they pray, it pleases Ilaren to have prayers spoken aloud, in as high a voice as doesn't strain the vocal chords. As the Immortal of Sound, it pleases her for supplicants to announce their devotion. However, as thanks, she gives the two girls a set of necklaces of jeweled coral beads. Interspersed between the beads, are charms that depict in some way each of them one of the domains of Ilaren. Lightning, Brawling, Alcohol, and Sound.

Skill Review: All Skills used appropriately to PC's level. However, I would've included logistics here as a skill used. Cleaning house and housekeeping, and more generally domestic management is the purview of the logistics skill. So please do bear that in mind going forward.
Notes: A very nice charitable thread. Seira and Seri are such nice girls, cleaning up the home from top to bottom for their mother. I found the bit about meeting a Taryn, and talking about how she'd gained a love interest a pretty sweet touch. Hopefully Taryn enjoys her painter boyfriend. I wonder if they'll get Taryn to get her friend to paint anything for them.

The last part, about donating the food they'd bought to the poor woman was a very nice deed, to be sure. I'm certain that Ilaren will appreciate their kindness, although I think Ilaren as the Immortal of Sound, prefers her supplicants to not whisper their prayers. So something to bear in mind.

All in all was a good thread! Good writing!
