Cat and Mouse

Ashan 48 699, Mid-day

Location: Outskirts of Rharne

They were further out in the fields past the farmlands they should've been, but Patrick and Dominek were on the run as they chased after her. Lexi. The girl had become a bit of a close friend to the brothers ever since they first came over, and of course ever since then Patrick had always avoided the goats instead. Chickens he was fine to work with but the goats... never again with the goats. Ever. He despised them so much, and after that particular Trial he definitely wanted nothing to do with them. But To-trial wasn't about goats or farming, though the boys did help earlier that morning. Almost voluntarily too granted their mother hadn't need to be in the city today, both were itching to get out and enjoy the fresh new Rebirth cycle air.

They were playing a game in the cornfields much like cat and mouse really, one of the three were the cat and had to hunt the two mice in the field. Patrick had been the cat this time and caught Dominek first, thus the two were both cats now on the prowl for the lonely mouse. "We're comin' for you Lexi!" The older brother forewarned as they both giggled and ran through rows of corn continuously, both boys panted heavily and were caked in dirt and sweat as they ran the fields. They came upon Lexi as she ran towards them with her head over her shoulder, not realizing that they were actually headed towards her. Dominek and Patrick caught her in their arms together as she squealed for a brief moment, her hands brought up to their shoulders as she regained her footing. "Gotcha!"

"Run boys run!!" She demanded with a look again over her shoulder, her hands used to push past them as she encouraged them to follow. Both boys looked to her then each other dumbfounded, unsure why she suddenly no longer seemed interested to play so suddenly. Sure enough they had their answer.

"Get back here!" A voice called out through the overgrowth of corn stalks as Patrick looked above the forest they were in, a farmer's scythe could be seen waving about above the corn as a farmer seemed to be drawing closer to them. One unhappy farmer by the sound of it.

"Oh shit, Pat run!" Dominek muttered as he twisted around to bolt for it, Patrick of course was right behind him as they sought to catch up to Lexi. Now instead of running from each other they were running from the farmer, and they certainly didn't want to risk getting caught since their parents wouldn't approve. Patrick could hear the farmer behind them call out with more swears while he and his brother ran together, with Lexi in front of them to determine where to turn to next. "We'll split up, I'll draw him away!" Dominek automatically volunteered as he nudged for Patrick to run faster, while he turned off with a shout over his shoulder to taunt the farmer. "Over here asshole! Come this way!"

Patrick knew the routine at this point that whenever Dominek would pull a stunt like this then he needed to listen. Dominek always had ideas on how to avoid getting into serious trouble, and while not all were good ones that worked he generally came out on top. "Go Lexi go!" He urged her as the girl seemed to hesitate, unsure about letting the older brother to go along and do his thing. Still she ran onward ahead of him and Pat kept an eye over his shoulder, his breathing ragged as he felt his lungs tire for air and his legs soften like jelly now. The farmer's scythe turned and then headed in the direction of Dominek's voice, as it carried out through the thicket of corn stalks all around them.

They continued to ran and sure enough both the farmer and Dom were out of range right now, and just as Patrick looked forward to see where he was running he ran into Lexi. Hard. Both nearly went down as he nearly overpowered her with his unintentional tackle, but what happened when they were that close to one another shocked him even more. Their lips touched. Blushing he pulled away from her and patted her shoulders and arms down, and then proceeded to brush the dirt off himself as he looked over his shoulder awkwardly. Lexi blushed and remained quiet for the most part, her fingers brought up to touch her lips as though she questioned the act. "Was that..."

"Nope." He denied immediately as he looked for some sign of Dominek, hopeful his brother would quickly turn up to kill the awkward conversation fast.

"That was!" She reprimanded as she walked into his line of sight. "You just kissed me!"

"Did not." He argued sourly even with his cheeks flushed.

"Bet you don't ever kiss much, that was a poor way to kiss." She teased him a little more with her hands behind her back.

"I didn't kiss you, we just accidentally bumped into one another is all." He justified with arms crossed as he looked everywhere else but Lexi. She seemed to let it go and wait as Patrick did, allowing their breaths to slow while they waited for some sign of his older brother.

"I still think it was a terrible kiss." She quietly reiterated with a leaf pulled fresh from the stock.

"Sarding hell Lexi, it wasn't a kiss!"

"Prove it," She tested with a confident strut towards him, "prove that wasn't how you actually kiss other girls."

"What?! No!" He shook his head as she drew awfully close. "I don't have to prove you anything." Yet as much as he wanted to believe that statement, the seeds were already planted inside his mind. Lexi watched him as he tried to avoid it and she could only giggle, the leaf used to tickle underneath his left ear as she egged him on. Patrick's hand lashed out to grip her wrist then and he stared at her hard... Very hard. Why did Lexi have to be so stubborn?! She still pegged him to kiss her and for the last time he felt ready to drop it, to run off and just forget the moment ever happened really. But looking at her now... Maybe he should've kissed her, show her that he wasn't bad at it at all.

His grip lessened as he leaned in a little closer to her, the tips of their nose about to brush as she smiled at him. Why? She looked absolutely ridiculous when she smiled like that. He wanted to outright fool her and tell her 'no but nice try,' but for some reason he lost the nerve. Completely lost every nerve he had as they lingered this close, somehow he couldn't find it in himself to just follow through or back out with the argument. "Just as I thought," She mused quietly next to his ear, "you don't know how to kiss a girl."

That was it.

Just as she started to twirl around to walk away he nudged her shoulder and moved in for the strike, his lips firmly planted on her's as she seemed to gasp in that moment. Then she was silent. Patrick wasn't sure if that was good or bad because his eyes were closed. Hard. But his lips lingered there still, pressed onto her's as they just stood there in the middle of the cornfield. It felt so... weird. Unusual even. Patrick thought there'd be something 'magical' about the whole act, but nothing really happened other than their lips touching one another briefly. Yet at the same time he felt his nerves and his stomach grow hyper all of a sudden, his insides all knotted up all of a sudden as he realized he'd been holding his breath when he kissed her.

Patrick slowly pulled away with his eyes slow to open and he looked at Lexi hard, her fingers back up to her lips as she seemed to mull over what just happened. Pat couldn't help but do the same for some reason now, his own index finger used to rub along the soft slobber coated tissue of his lips. That was definitely weird of them, certainly felt weird when Patrick thought more about it. "Better?" He checked a little self conscious as her lips turned upward into a grin.

"I dunno," She remarked with her eyes brought to the sky, "never had a kiss up until now."

"Wait..." Patrick's cheeks flushed red as he narrowed eyes on her. "You... never had a kiss until now?"

Lexi tucked her lower lip in to bite it a little when she nodded. "Same as you I presume?"

"N... None of your business fer sure!" He remarked rather embarrassed as he started to walk off.

"Oh come on Pat it wasn't that bad!"

"Yeah yeah, whatever. We need to find Dominek." He murmured with a sigh as he led the way through the thicket stalks before them.

"No need!" The voice of his older brother called out as he ran from another part of the fields to join them. "We better go, before the farmer realizes we gave him the slip!" At his sudden appearance the younger brother and Lexi both eyed him awkwardly, unsure whether or not Dominek had any clue about what just happened between them. "What?"

"Nothin!" Patrick immediately answered with a glance to Lexi. "Let's go before we get caught." Somehow Lexi was heard giggling as the boys led the way back home.

Comments: This was cute!. There were some grammatical errors, but nothing that distracted me from the story. Why does Patrick avoid goats, by the way? What have they done to him? And will Lexi eventually become his girlfriend?
