Memory: Getting The Assignment

23 Ashan, 715

Iladar groaned as he rolled out of his bed, his tail flopping unceremoniously to the ground as he used it to stand up and stretch. Running a hand through his hair, the Phaesty slithered over to his clothes and pulled on his undershirt and tunic before he slithered out of his room to join his fellow militia members for breakfast. The meal was a simple one, ham and eggs with a bit of apple tart to round it off, and Iladar ate quietly so as not to disturb the other militia members who were not quite awake yet. After breakfast and a quick trip to his room to make sure he'd pass inspection, the Phaesty quickly slithered to the meeting room where the rest of his group was waiting.

Once there, Iladar slithered into formation alongside the other four Phaesty regulars in the squad, behind the ten Yalical who made up the main fighting force of the unit. Once they were all in place, Phithe Elthert Ivorian took up a sheet of paper and looked at it for a moment before speaking. "There's very little to discuss today before we report for duty. Our unit has the morning shift, so right after we get done here we're out the door and into the city. Now, there's been some reports of bandits in the ocean-side caverns, and while they aren't likely to attack the city, if you have reason to head down to the shore, be wary. A message has been received from Volanta about there being pirates in the area as well, so be prepared for ship-board duty in case of emergency. Another message, this time from Rharne, says that there's indication that The Eternal Empire is getting ready to march. They aren't sure where, but we may be called to either Rharne, Volanta's or both's aid." the Phithe said, glancing up at his unit as a measure of excitement passed through them. The Raskithecal of The Eternal Empire were the Ithecal's predecessors, but there was no doubting the rivalry between the two races and the two nations, however rarely they actually met.

Once the unit had calmed back down, Elthert glanced back down at his sheet. "Finally, Yithiral is sending a group of militia to Ne'haer for semi-permanent duty. I say semi-permanent because while the militia does plan to call it's soldiers home at some point, it doesn't yet know how long the assignment will last. Because of this, they are only sending volunteers, however these volunteers can be of any rank as long as they are regulars." he said, before setting down the sheet and looking at his unit. "Now, Ne'haer is goodly distance away and through some hostile territory. Orders say that the delegation will be passing through Rhakros so as to avoid trouble, and while Rhakros is a nominally allied city, the Plague Bearers are an unpredictable lot and even if they play nice, it's entirely possible to be accidentally infected with something. All that being said, Ne'haer is a good ally to Yithiral and Lady Ethelynda has even bestowed Taithir to it's natives. I won't blame you if you prefer to stay here and defend our own people, but you would be doing good work there as well." he said, before glancing out the window. "Right, if you want to volunteer, let me know and I'll give you leave to go Euralcal Aergent's office, as she's the one who is handling the assignments. Dismissed!" Elthert said, after which most of the unit began to leave the room.

However, Iladar remained behind and slithered up to his leader. "Phithe Elthert, may I have leave to submit my name for the Ne'haer mission?" he asked, saluting as he spoke. Elthert took a moment to look Iladar over before nodding. "You're Iladar, one of the Phaesty who've been assigned to my unit...very well, Iladar. Don't dawdle though, Euralcal Aergent can be a bit impatient sometimes." he said. "Thank you, sir." Iladar said, saluting again before slithering out of the room towards the offices.

Memory: Getting The Assignment

Iladar managed to get himself lost on the way to Euralcal Aergent's office, largely due to the fact that the Phaesty had never had reason visit one of the Euralcal before. While anyone could visit them, it was generally accepted that one took their problems to lower ranked officials first as a matter of courtesy. However, the young Ithecal was able to find his way to the part of the headquarters where the Euralcal and the Aethesti had their offices after a brief run in with another Phithe who was kind enough to point the way.

Pausing outside the offices, Iladar turned his eyes to the case that held the blazing white armor and halberd that had once been used by Kyrau Ivorian. The fate of Aukari hero was both frightening and inspiring, as she had sacrificed her very sanity to save the city from Audrae's champion. While no one particularly wanted to share her fate, just about everyone in the Militia hoped that they would have the courage to make such a sacrifice if they need to be.

Shaking his head to clear his mind, Iladar took one last look at the pristine white armor and slithered over to Aergent's office. Pausing outside the door, Iladar took a deep breath and knocked on the door. "Euralcal Aergent? I'm here to sign up for the Ne'haer expedition." he said, waiting for permission to enter the room.

Memory: Getting The Assignment

The day had started off as a bit of a rough one for the woman sifting through the many piles of parchment. She was usually much more organized than this, tidy, and neat since she had no tolerance for those who were any less than that. Organization meant efficiency. Efficiency meant getting things done quicker, better and getting things done meant moving forward, moving up. Euralcal Aergent's wasn't flustered, however, irritated by the amount of people who had approached her that day. Messages from Volanta, more attacks from pirate raiders, notes from Rharne and there was the ever looming doom of the movement of the Empire and their Raskithecal cousins. There was nothing to be flustered about, yet somehow she was being buried alive in parchment today and if one more person approached her with more paperwork—

A knock on the door made her outwardly groan as the quill she had been writing with thudded to the desk when she dropped it in a moment of agitation. “Yes, what is it?” Her voice was clipped as she called out to whomever felt the need to interrupt her thoughts with, probably, more useless tasks for her to see to.

What happened to those days out in the fields when she was cutting down enemies left and right? Office jobs didn't suit her so well...

As the Ithecal cracked open her office door, she turned expectant eyes to him. "Euralcal Aergent? I'm here to sign up for the Ne'haer expedition."

Sigh. More paperwork.

“Ne'haer? Come and sit, you need to fill out forms before you're approved to leave.” Rising from the chair she sat in, Aergent moved over to a set of filing drawers before removing a couple of sheets of parchment, ink already applied to the paper. Slithering back to her seat, she held the documents out for the Ithecal to take before sitting back down. “You'll have to get written permission from your Phithe before you're able to leave. His signature allows you to depart with armor and weapons that meet Ne'haer regulations. You're expected to make a customary visit to Lady Ethelynda before departure for these items.” Scribbling some notes down, she paused to look at him. “Do not be late, Phaesty. What I am saying to you is mandatory. You will not be allowed on the expedition otherwise.” Her eyes held a serious note, one that could intimidate even the most experienced Euralcal before she went back to writing. “Please take a look over some of the books we have on Ne'haer. It's best you familiarize yourself with some of their laws and customs before going over there so you don't end up looking foolish. Otherwise—“ She finished scribbling and handed him the last document, “You have my approval to leave for Ne'haer. The boat will depart from the docks two trials from now and your visitation to Ethelynda will be expect tomorrow, at sunset. Any questions?”

Iladar sighed in relief as Euralcal Aergent told him to sit, glad that she didn't sound too annoyed with his interruption. He wasn't scared of her exactly, but he had heard that she could be pretty impatient with such things. Taking the seat she indicated, the Ithecal waited quietly for her to retrieve the papers he needed to fill out, taking them quietly before she sat back down.

After she told him to get written permission from Phithe Elthert, Iladar nodded before swallowing his nervousness when told he would have to have a meeting with Ethelynda. A meeting, though admittedly likely not solo, with The Noble Serpent was not uncommon for militia, but it usually only happened for Yalical or higher ranked members, barring the Day of Remembrance. He listened to the rest of her instructions, then nodded hurriedly as he took the last document from her. "No ma'am, no questions at all." he said, as stood up. "Thank you for your time, Euralcal Aergent." he said, saluting her before he left her office.

Grinning happily as he shut the door behind him, Iladar slithered out of the headquarters in search of Phithe Elthert. After quite a bit of searching, though he had stopped a few times to help out some of locals with their problems, the most difficult of which had involved a young child, a panicky cat, a runaway dog, and a surprisingly lengthy chase, he managed to find Elthert near the docks supervising the unloading of one of the newly arrived trade ships. "Phithe Elthert, I was told I require your signature to join the Ne'haer assignment." he said, once Elthert had a spare moment.

Looking over at him, Elthert took the paper from him and added his signature. "Take the day off and do some research. You'll get fitted for the armor tomorrow and you'll get it before you leave." he said, before giving Elthert the paper and turning back to the ship. "Yes, sir!" Iladar said, saluting again before he turned to slither up to the library to do some reading.

The library was not really one of Iladar's favorite locations, the stuffy and quiet building feeling almost oppressive to him. He knew the value of information, but Iladar was a simple man who wasn't very good at reading. After finding the section that housed there information on Ne'haer, Iladar took a big book on Ne'haer's culture and customs over to a table and sat down to read.

As night began to fall, Iladar found that he still hadn't finished the book, but he figured he had found most of the important information, namely the layout, climate, geography, laws, factions, and ruling body of the city. He hoped it would be enough as he replaced the book he had found before slithering out of the library and returning to his room. Taking a moment, Iladar packed most of the essential items he knew he'd need and already had, then went to the dining hall to eat dinner, a simple affair of lamb and sausage with cherry pie. Once finished with dinner, he returned to his room and slept.

The next morning Iladar woke early and got ready in record time. His morning tasks after breakfast were simple, a long fitting at the armor to make sure the armor he would be assigned would fit him well, then choosing a weapon and shield for the journey ahead. After that, Iladar was left to his own devices. It took him some time to think of what he should do, but after a while he went to the pet shop, thinking to purchase a pet to remind him of home. After some searching, Iladar settled on a friendly milk snake he named Irassia.

After that, Iladar took Irassia and went back up to the library to study some more, always watching the time. When sunset drew near, Iladar gathered himself and slithered out of the library, heading towards the main hall of the headquarters. Standing in front of the case that held Kyrau Ivorian's armor, Iladar stood at parade rest, his arms behind his back as he awaited the Noble Serpent.
