In which Inali meets someone new

This is a city located on the coast of western Idalos and stands as a pillar of light against the dark cliff faces surrounding it. Ne'haer is considered a port city for ships as well as the last stop for most seafarers adventuring to locate the Iulure Isles. For this, it is nicknamed "Death's Door". In contrast to its nickname, this city focuses mostly on religious values and rituals for the protection of the immortals watching over their city. Ne'haer is also a city booming with trade and nobility, as well as jobs and plenty of opportunities to advance in skills and crafts.

The Failings of Scholars (Malcolm, Kura)

Up ahead Godric and Kura had put enough distance between themselves and the stragglers to speak without drawing the captain's eye. "Not sure," he shrugged his shoulders and steered the horse away from the river to follow the road. "Malcolm seems to know a lot about them, some quest one of the immortals sent him on," he was careful not to announce that he knew the knight was one of them. "I don't believe his intentions are sinister. I've been traveling with the man for some time now and he strikes me as a very... Genuine kind of guy."
Further back, Malcolm's full attention was on Inali. He smiled when she mentioned the well known fact that the language of the Eidisi was for their people only, but it was always worth a try; it was easy to forget after going without seeing one for so long, how snobby the race was in general. "I guess I could never say no to new knowledge, you can't blame me for trying," he offered a playful, half-smile and looked up ahead to see Godric sharing his horse with Kura, a woman Malcolm was unsure as to whether or not she could be trusted. Kura hadn't done anything questionable yet, but he did find it a little strange that she was all the way out here, traveling the same road, to the same location.

When the party finally made it to the bridge crossings, Malcolm searched ahead, taking in all of the small islands dotted across the river. The rivers in Rynmere weren't quite as wide as those found in Ne'haer, but they were faster moving and deep enough to house tall ships two-abreast. His horse stopped at the first bridge and raked the earth nervously before taking a slow, tentative first step onto the sturdy boards. Malcolm had managed to slip back into his boots and had both hands free to steer his mount carefully across the centre of the bridge. "I hope one of you has a map," he called back to the group. "From here on out I have no idea where we are," he would let Kura pick a spot for them to set up camp later.

Kura nodded at Godric's explanation, then sighed pensively. "Aye, I agree that he does seem an honest sort, but it's the Immortal what gave him the quest that sets my mind all ablaze with curiosity." she said, her accent lending her words a sort of casual air that she didn't particularly feel. After that, she fell silent again until they reached the bridge. The bridge itself was in decent condition, and she didn't share Malcolm's nervousness about the quality of the bridge, though that might be because she saw several of the reports on it.

At the knights question, she looked up. "It'll put us just east of Cycres, and if even half of what I've heard about that place is true, we'll be wanting to find our camp for the night as far away from it as we can." she said, pulling up a mental map of the area in her head, pulled from the files she had looked through during her job. "If my memory is correct, we can head due north of here until we hit the road. From there we can be turnin' west and straight on till we hit Lysoria. Or we can cut cross-country straight towards Lysoria, though we'll be passin' through Hyran that way." she said as the crossed the bridge. She could send Speck or Phelan out to scout, but she wasn't yet certain she wanted to reveal who she was to the people yet. Especially to the Eidisi, for worry of the Queen of Viden discovering she was away from the Empire.

Inali wondered how an Eidisi in Viden would reply to Malcolm’s statement. They would likely be pleased at how quickly he gave up the idea of learning their esoteric tongue. A select few might be dejected, as nearly all Eidisi yearned for any opportunity to mock human attempts to pronounce words in the Ancient Language. Inali was not one of those Eidisi. Similarly, this man was not like most of the humans she had met when travelling outside the tundras of the north. Most humans respond by asking her a series of questions or demanding that she teach them anyways, rules be damned. Inali secretly admired those that had the pluck to choose the latter of the options. The questions that arose when a human didn’t understand her people were predictable - “Well why not? What’s so special about the Ancient Language?”, “Do you think you’re too good to teach me?”, “Do you think I’m too stupid to learn?”. Through these questions, the humans revealed their ignorance, and Inali ignored all but the most insistent of them. The Eidisi turned to Malcolm and spoke slowly, choosing her words with care,

“You do not wanting learn Ancient Language. No passion, No drive. You were testing me.”

The last statement came out with a hint of bitterness, and Inali fixed her attention on the bridge a few hundred feet ahead. She had not thought it possible to find a reply she disliked more than endless questions, though she had done so in a matter of a few bits. He would risk the wrath of her city and Yvithia upon her so that he could dabble in a tongue he would never master. Damned humans. She should have ignored him and went on her own way.

She said nothing as he scouted the area ahead and maintained her distance from the group. She watched the trio escort their mounts across and followed suit while murmuring soothing words to Sana in her mother tongue. When they finished, Inali looked up to Kura, awaiting their next move.

The stranger's words amused him. Perhaps she was right, after all Malcolm was over four hundred years old and hadn't branched out very far where languages were concerned. Of course, he was an expert of the Aukari, and ancient serpent-tongue language used only in Rynmere, and while his common wasn't quite as advanced, especially in written form, very few noticed. To know the language of the gods though could be a handy thing, and might help him communicate better with some of the immortals he knew. "Testing you?" He smiled. "Perhaps? It looks like you passed, Eídisi."
Godric had let Kura take control of the reins and leaned back a little, trying to give her some room. He held his hands behind his back against the horse for balance and watched the quick moving water flow under the bridge, glad that they hadn't needed to get wet in the end. "Who knows, maybe the immortals have a plan for us," the man slipped and quickly correctly himself, though he did this as subtlety at possible as not to arouse suspicion. "I mean who knows what they want with us humans..." Godric murmured, hoping Kura wouldn't question his slip of the tongue.
Once they had crossed the river safely, Godric stopped his horse and waited for Malcolm to catch up, not daring to say anymore than he already had. "Well?"
"Well what?" Malcolm stared at the man.
"Are we all traveling together now?"
Malcolm looked back and forth between the two women. "You're more than welcome to share the road with us," he shrugged and kept moving, "as long as you don't mind spending the night in Cycres. Maybe you can rent a horse there, Kura?" Even against Kura's warning, Malcolm liked the idea of a pint of ale and a warm bed to go to tonight, rather than roughing it in the woods. "If not, I'm sure I'll see you on the road in the morning!" He called over his shoulder and gave his horse a kick to speed up.

Kura gave a somewhat amused laugh at Godric's attempt to cover his slip. "I already know you're only half, remember. You let it slip back in Ne'haer." she sad quietly, so the Eidisi wouldn't hear her. Then she nodded in Malcolm's direction. "And I'd guess he is too. Don't worry, boyo, I won't be tellin' no one though. After all, us elderly folk gotta be stickin' together." she said, her tone amused before she heard Malcolm's intention to go to Cycres.

"I'll pop into Cycres to rent meself a horse, but then I'll be steppin' right back out. Don't much fancy having someone lookin' through my pack while I'm sleepin' ya know." she said, before considering things. "But I won't be too far out, a mile or so north of the bridge, so I'll be waitin' fer you to come along before I make my way to Lysoria." she said, her tone calm but firm. The Imperial had absolutely no interest in spending the night in Cycres, but she would need a horse.

Inali bristled at the comment, her light blue fingers twisting together in a tangled mess. While she had known he was testing her, the Eidisi had hoped that Malcolm would have at least apologized for his arrogance. Why would he? He was human, and his ranking within the military more than likely allowed him access to anything he needed. It was a miracle that he had not simply demanded lessons in exchange for protection.

Inali unraveled her hands and ran her fingers through Sana’s mane as Malcolm turned his attention to the lingering question of the group’s lodgings. She listened to the three of them speak with interest, still unsure of which option would be the best. They both had valid points – she would be unable to continue to Lysoria if her nels and supplies were stolen. Still, Inali didn’t consider sleeping in the middle of the woods a viable answer – she would have to lay on her stomach to block out the light of the suns, and she’d be lucky to get any rest at all with the damned bugs crawling on her face. So long as they all stayed at the same inn, Inali was sure the military insignia on Malcolm’s jerkin would deter all but the most desperate of criminals. Inali spoke up,

“I’ll staying in Cycres. Cycres must has safe inn, no?”

For the sake of her sleep schedule, the Eidisi hoped her prediction was true. She spurred Sana to follow Malcolm at a steady trot with a gentle press of her heels into the mare’s flanks.

Comments:
Quality story from all. As a purely social post this was a decent read. Sometimes there can be dragging moments in these types of posts, but luckily I didn't feel that here. Sadly, as with many a social post the opportunities for knowledge shifts from skills and professions to characters and locations. I did my best to give you some decent stuff nonetheless. Any questions, comments, concerns? Please feel free to drop me a PM.
