Ithecal Q&A

Not a question, but I just wanted to point out that the lore page currently says that the Ithecal only live for ten arcs.

Ithecal Q&A

How much are Ithecal aware of in terms of their heritage? Does the average Ithecal know that they were once a dragon who was slain and reincarnated, or is it more a general gut feeling of knowing that they used to be something with a purpose that they can no longer carry out for some reason?

Also, are other immortals aware of the origin of the Ithecal, and explicitly where their souls came from? Do they have opinions on this matter if they do?

There is mention of “families” across Idalos - are these singular roving bands, dishonored bloodlines that refuse to admit they are wrong, or syndicates pursuing their own agenda for he world?

Also mention is made of bloodlines more than once - is family an important thing?

Ithecal Q&A

What are family structures like? After the egg is laid, who is responsible for raising the children? Is it just the mother? The parents together? Is there an extended family in the picture?

How to the Ithecal define marriage? One on one, one on two, etc? Is love usually involved, or more of a social contract?

Is there a pressing "duty" to procreate? At thirteen million population, they don't seem to be having trouble surviving. Tacking on to that, are there any general attitudes toward same-sex coupling or long-term relationships?

If an Ithecal reaches mental "maturity" at 10 years, even while their body is still young, are they seen by society as an adult of the mind? Can they make their own legal decisions at that age or decide to become independent from their parents, or would other Ithecal frown on that?

If Ithecal don't like to admit when they are wrong, who decides on the law? In Ivorian in particular, are disputes settled by a third party justice system, or is it mostly done between individuals or clans? And who curtails it if the feud gets to the point it damages bystanders?

Ithecal Q&A

Can the three subraces interbreed? I'm assuming they can at least copulate; is there any stigma attached to lovin' outside your subspecies?

Gender! Since there don't seem to be any practical differences in strength, size or abilities between gender aside from some minor aesthetics; are there then any real differences in gender roles and expectations?

Do Ithecal have tear ducts/can they cry?

How long is an Ithecal's tongue? Is it more human or more lizard like?

Since they're reptilian and have a highly developed sense of taste, how developed is their sense of smell?

When it comes to food, there is high importance placed on quality of meat – in turn, how does Ithecal culture relate to its animals? Do they mostly hunt or eat livestock? Do they raise their own livestock? For an Ithecal, is there honor to be found in raising fine animals for consumption? Also, does "quality" also depend on the diet, health and happiness of the animal being eaten?

Ithecal Q&A

What do Ithecal voices sound like? Are they raspy and reptilian, or more human-like? Also, is it immediately easy for a non-Ithecal to tell a male and female apart by voice?

Tacking on to that, the lore mentions that if someone knows the signs then they can reliably guess gender – if someone doesn't know the signs, how easy is it for them to misgender an Ithecal that does not volunteer that information?

How common are Ithecal throughout Idalos? If they're centralized in Ivorian, how many are in the Eternal Empire? How do Ithecal citizens typically interact with the Empire, given their stubbornness?

What about the rest of Idalos? How are they generally viewed in independent territories?

One of the fast track skills is smithing – is there a culture of smithing among the Ithecal? Is it just because they have to keep up with weapons technology, or is it something they actually take pride in and enjoy, even though it demands change?

Ithecal Q&A

Taking your questions from the top.

1: No, the Ithecal aren't aware of their heritage.

2: Ethelynda, Famula, and Thetros are the only ones certain of the Ithecal's nature. Others might, at most, suspect.

3: Families all over the world are small break offs, dishonored, split due to differing ideologies, or just pursuing their own agendas.

4: Family is incredibly important, yes, though it's taught values rather than something inherent to the race. Ethelynda and Raskalarn both stress the importance of strong family bonds.

5: Mother and father care for the children. Extended family have a big contribution.

6: Marriage is simple, mostly imported from other cultures because if left alone, the Ithecal don't need the ceremony. A bond is needed, but not necessarily one of love, though the two people getting married generally at least have to get along, due to the importance of family.

7: No, no pressing duty to procreate. Same sex relationships, short or long term, are juicy gossip and nothing more.

8: Ithecal start making their own decisions at a young age, but parents and extended family are still expected to help them out for a while longer.

9: Laws are decided by the Arm Iurus, headed by Vericus, one of Ethelynda's sons. Matters between clans are usually resolved by the clans, but the Arm Iurus will step in if needed. Ithecal don't like to be wrong, but when they are, they suck it up and deal with it. All the legal stuff is for the Ivorian Empire, of course. The lawmaking process of the Eternal Empire has yet to be written up.

10: We'll get back to you on that.

11: There are gender differences. Like with lizards, you wouldn't notice them if you're a human, but as an Ithecal, you know when you're looking at a male or a female. Subtle differences in the shapes of eyes, hands, body, tail. Enough to pretty conclusively recognise if you're looking at a male or a female from a casual glance in the street. However, the differences between male and female voices can be used as a clear sign.
12: They can cry.

13: Tongues are human-like, but smoother, for all sub-species. It is also roughly the same size as a human tongue, but slightly longer.

14: Sense of smell and taste are both pretty well developed.

15: Meat is preferred hunted, but it depends on their current situation - Ivorian is an island with a limited natural food supply after all, so hunting is scarce, while Eternal Empire has a much larger region to work with. Livestock is raised regardless. Raising animals comes with its own sense of honour, though it is not always appreciated as much as it should be. Quality does depend on the treatment of the animal.

16: Ithecal voices sound distinctly non-human. Deep and raspy, harkening back to their draconic ancestors.

17: The voices are an easy way to tell, but physically they are easy to misgender.

18: There's a fair few spread across the world, but they mostly concentrate in the Ivorian Empire and the Eternal Empire. Within the latter, they are well integrated enough that no one looks twice anymore, partially due to Raskalarn heavily pushing their integration. Most people of the Eternal Empire tend to be stubborn, but the fact that they all serve Raskalarn is used as a unifying force.

19: Ithecal, while stubborn, are generally fairly respectful and polite. Some don't like them because of their habit of lashing out when angered, though.

20: For now, it's to keep up with weapons tech. It might get changed.
