Born and raised in Etzos, Gaulder is a true believer in everything the city stands for. Such qualities he instilled into his son, Calder. Of his three sons, he sees promise in all of them. but it is to Calder that he shares the most of his time. One son is but a Blacksmith, while another deals largely in Statecraft. Calder, on the other hand, is following most closely in Gaulder's footsteps, but far more ambitious. While Gaulder instilled such an ire for the Immortals in his sons, he never took it upon himself to reach beyond his station. In fact, he did not become a Mark until nearly ten Arcs ago, his true friends being the Elements themselves.
Domain Magic has carried through the Valehart family for generations, though Gaulder was considered by his own father to be quite weak, lacking ambition. He could never appease his own father, so he made it a point to encourage Calder's development, whilst not staying too close so he could learn to temper himself. As far as Gaulder can attest, his style of parenting is paying off. Their relationship was not without strain, however. Gaulder would not allow Calder to become a Mark until recently, for fear that he would Overstep his bounds and be consumed by the Elements as his father's father was.
Calder had been wanting to join since he was a boy, but the respect for his father still lingered, even as the Arcs drew on without result.
