Chrien's Night, Pranksters Delight

Scalvoris Town Docks
10th Saun, 717

Ah Chrien’s night, was there a sweeter time of year? It was perhaps the only day in the Scalvoran calendar where it was not just socially acceptable for a person to play a harmless prank upon another but actually encouraged. For people like Tio, who thrived on mischief and the minor chaos it caused, any excuse was excuse enough for a prank, and so the option of letting a golden opportunity like this pass by was practically unthinkable.

And for tonight Tio had a very special prank in mind to play on the Biqaj bard Pash. Almund was home to many skilled woodworkers who, for the right price, could craft practically anything, and with their help the thief had created the perfect item for his plan: a ten foot wooden shark. It was painted to look like a real shark, at least from a distance or under the water, and was built from a blend of wood that made it sink in the water when not moving but float close to the surface with its fin sticking out when pulled. Attached to the underside of its mouth was a long rope with a hook on the end.

It was the dead of night when Tio made his move. Despite the recent string of storms the sky was thankfully clear, and so he had no trouble pushing through the calm waters around Scalvoris Town as he swam as quietly as possible towards the sloop Pash lived on. Most people were either asleep already or out partying in town, leaving the docks pretty much deserted, and so Tio’s approach went unnoticed. When he finally reached the sloop he held his breath and dived down, swimming underneath the sloop and wrapping the rope around the ship's keel a few times, then fastened the hook to the rope and swam back to the surface.

He watched as the fake shark slowly began to sink out of sight underneath the water and smirked in anticipation of what was to come. His little prank probably wouldn’t come to fruition until tomorrow, or maybe even later, but when Pash next set sail if everything went as planned the fake shark would rise to the surface, dragged behind the ship by the length of rope, and appear to chase the sloop wherever it went.

As quietly as he could Tio swam back to the docks and pulled himself out of the water, shaking himself off like a dog to rid himself of as much water as he could. Perhaps he’d get lucky and spot the results of his handiwork, but even if he didn’t the knowledge that his creation was out there somewhere causing chaos in his name had him feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Hopefully both Pash and Kali would only be a little bit scared of sharks.

Chrien's Night, Pranksters Delight

The trial had grown late, even if it didn’t exactly show it. Cally’s had wound down to a close for the evening, which meant the break was just a few bits after midnight, one sun low against the horizon while the pair traveled their never-setting course across the sky for the season. Pash made his way through the streets, sandals traveling over familiar cobblestones and through alleys he’d learned were the quickest jaunt to the docks and home to his ship. He passed by dock workers and folks he’d come to know along the way before leaping unceremoniously onto the deck of his sloop, completely unaware of Tio’s presence, let alone any evidence of his handiwork.

Hoping Kali had somehow managed to stay awake for him, aware that her sleep schedule and his were probably never going to entirely find a middle ground, he began to unmoor The Muse from the dock even before slipping his lute off of his shoulder, though he didn’t shove off just yet. The sloop bobbed in the harbor, drifting only a little as he crossed the deck and slipped down into his cabin through his hatch,

“Es’jah qua’ma.” His affectionate Rakahi greeting was in hushed tones, ready with a grin or a kiss or both for the dark-haired Sev’ryn as he moved to set his instrument in its place and poke around his tiny, well-stocked galley for something to eat—despite the lateness of the night and despite his break at Cally’s, Pash was really capable of snacking at a moment’s notice. His employment had also spoiled him for decent food, having made little herb pots that hung on hooks near the galley’s porthole for sunlight and stocking the cool larder under the floorboards with tastier fare than most sea voyagers normally would keep: cheeses and fruits and bread baked in town. Nothing he had figured out how to travel with, honestly, but all foods he could keep and happily consume while docked in Scalvoris,

“Did y’ have a good evenin’? Cally’s was quiet to-trial, but that’s a'right. I wonder if th’ heat keeps folks away ‘r if it’s jus’ ‘cause it’s Chrien’s Night.” The tall Biqaj chattered with Kali between nibbles, his tone a little sour when mentioning the Immortal sister of his Creator, the Immortal who was strangely opposite and yet strangely necessary. “I figured we’d head out in th’ harbor again, eh, far from th’ docks? It’s cooler … an’ quieter. M’haps safer, too, given all th’ pranks folks like t’ play to-trial. I’ve got a couple o’ lil’ paper boats from town we can set out since that’s what everyone does this trial. Although, that said, I’ve got a lil’ somethin’ for U’Frek, too, jus’ t’ make up for ‘t.”

Because, well, he was Biqaj after all.

Pash’s baritone was a statement but he chuckled anyway, amused at all the Scalvoris traditions that were so different from home, filling a mug with water for himself before leaning an inked shoulder against the curved hull near the hatch that led back above decks, waiting for her before going back out into the more direct, blazing heat to set sail away from the docks and into Scalvoris harbor proper where the breeze was less obstructed by other vessels and they were, well, alone without any neighbors around at all.

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in. PM with questions!

Chrien's Night, Pranksters Delight

10th Saun, 717

The annoying thing about Saun, maybe more than the heat or the burning suns on ones back was the perpetual light. Day...night...it didn't matter. Everything was just light. Time meant nothing when there was no biological way to differentiate between sleep time and awake time. It was this problem that left the Sev'ryn huntress wide awake at what could have been considered midnight. She had tried to sleep, then she'd wandered around the dock and back onto The Muse. Some time she spent examining her bow and arrows for damage, other parts she used to search the sloop for a deck of cards. In the end, she found herself seated at the small handmade table, bored. The longer she sat there, the more her mind wandered. Her tattooed hand smoothed across the wooden surface with a private smile, remembering precisely when she'd first seen the table down and how sturdy the piece was.

"Immortal's Kali'rial, think of something else." She groaned to herself, sighing heavily and resting her forehead on her arms with flushed cheeks. A familiar sound brought her head up immediately, listening to footsteps across the deck. Almost leaping up from her seating, the brunette restrained herself as the sunkissed bard made his way inside. His kiss was affectionate in its greeting, perhaps though not at the level she had in mind.

He's just finished work, and he's probably tired. Just...back off. The huntress chided herself, sitting back down to listen to Pash talk about the evening, shrugging a little at his question.

"Good as can be expected. Nothing exciting happened, couldn't sleep though. I think it's the light. I'm tired of the light." She made a face to emphasise her thoughts on the matter, before it turned into a confused smile.

"Pranks? Why would anyone want to 'prank' people? The more I think I understand about Scalvoris, the weirder it gets." Watching the sea hardened Biqaj move around the cabin, the Sev'ryn bit her lip as he leaned against the hull, managing to look rakishly handsome without even trying. He'd asked her a question, and the southerner had completely missed it.

"Hrm? Move? Oh yes, we should do that. Lead the way..." Kali said, waving her hand toward the hatch and following the bard on deck into the searing, blinding heat. It was an immediate dampener, but not enough to crush her train of thought entirely. The huntress moved around the deck to help Pash get them ready for departure, sneaking glances at his inked arms as he shifted rigging or the taught muscles in his abdomen when he pushed them off from the dock, chuckling quietly to herself at the impressive view.

You're going to get yourself in trouble. Her inner voice chided again, and the brunette almost 'tsked' out loud at it.

Hang it all.

Moving across the deck, she caught the taller minstrel by the mast, waiting for his shifting eyes to catch hers before leaning in for a long, passionate kiss, her hands lifting to hold his face between them. After what seemed like arcs, Kali pulled back and looked at him with a heated gaze.

"Move the sloop." She said huskily, making her intentions extremely clear.

Chrien's Night, Pranksters Delight

Perhaps Chrien was blessing this prank done in her name, because as luck had it Pash and Kali came to the docks and boarded their sloop a short while after he'd finished his set up. During that time Tio had located and... borrowed... a weathered old fishing rod, bucket and fisherman's coat, and after tapping into the power of Syroa's mark on his back to transform his visage had disguised himself as a tiny grey-haired fisherman sitting amicably at the edge of a quay trawling for a catch. Closer inspection might reveal that his clothes were damp underneath his coat and that he had no bait, which would explain why he'd caught no fish, but who'd spare a second glance at such an unobtrusive old man at this time of night?

Tio watched his two victims board their ship out of the corner of his eye, fighting to keep a smirk off his face. By the looks of things they were preparing to set sail, which meant that his shark would soon be discovered. How would the react? He wasn't expecting them to loose their heads or anything, but the sight of a shark chasing you was sure to make anybody panic.

Perhaps he should think of a way to reveal that he was the culprit behind this prank to them after it was done? He wasn't usually one to own up to his mischievous deeds, but as it was all done in good jest and he was pretty proud of this prank the idea was worth considering. Of course he'd have to avoid telling them in person, Kali was likely to break his nose if he did, so he'd have to think of another way to do it. A massive sign perhaps? No, that was too subtle...

Chrien's Night, Pranksters Delight

“Tired o’ th’ light? There’s another thirty trials ‘r so ‘f it.” The tall Biqaj teased Kali, though he frowned sympathetically when the lovely huntress admitted to not being able to sleep. Saun was a difficult adjustment with all the brightness and all the heat—oh, so much heat, “I don’t know why th’ pranks; it’s prob’ly jus’ somethin’ t’ keep their minds off th’ hot cycle an’ a way ‘f appeasin' Chrien—”

He rolled his shoulders in a shrug, tide pool gaze not blind to the way she watched him in the cabin. There were different kinds of heat, after all. With a grin and a wink, he led them up the ladder and out of the hatch,

“—I’m pretty sure I’ve got better ideas on how t’ keep m’ mind off th’ suns,” Pash all but purred, completely willing to play along with everything her brief look was implying, “an’ it looks like y’ do, too, rajo.”

He was already slipping off his crisp white work shirt as he climbed above decks from his cabin, calloused fingers working without a second thought to free him from the buttons. Once he’d removed himself from the well-tailored shirt, he set it on the roof of the cabin next to the hatch so he would remember to take it back down below decks and hang it up for work tomorrow. That his lover watched him with interest was far from unwelcome, her expression enticing as she chose to watch him unmoor them from the dock and shove off.

By Zanik, Kali’rial seemed to have something pressing on her mind … and it wasn’t the suns’ heat. Or, maybe it was. It didn’t matter, really, all this daylight and warmth seemed to stir up a little crazy in everybody. If the dark-haired Sevir’s kind of crazy meant her hands were on him and her lips were teasing him, that was just fine as far as he was concerned. She lingered with her inviting kiss just long enough for his hands to start to wander over her familiar body and he almost couldn’t quite imagine even making it out into the harbor when she finally pulled away,

“O’aye, I’ll move you—er—th’ sloop … an’ you. Mm. Qes.” Pash could only hum and stutter his distracted response, hardly a fitting riposte, reduced to a limited vocabulary by the very nature of thoughts shifting with the current his body wanted to float away on in her lovely, currently quite sultry presence. He blinked, struggling to bring his violet gaze back into focus before he turned his attentions to raising the mainsail and the jib, laughing coyly. Once he’d caught just enough wind that they moved a little faster than a drift, he tied the lines and moved toward the tiller to steer them away from the docks and into the harbor, pulse racing excitedly in his pointed ears.

Pausing on his way to the aft to steer, he returned Kali’s kiss playfully in kind, though he couldn’t quite stay as long in one place as he wanted to, given that the sloop was moving now and there were other ships nearby he needed his wits about him to avoid. So the seafaring musician tangled their fingers together of with one hand and tugged her with him, reaching the tiller and placing said hand on his hip suggestively as he did so, pulling her greedily against him as he navigated them out of the harbor. While he’d have to look ahead and off the port and starboard sides to navigate them—and was tall enough to do so just as long as he didn’t give into the temptations available to him as he held her playfully—and get The Muse into open water, Kali was quite free to do whatever she wished with him so long as he could, of course, steer as well as have a clear view off the aft of the ship behind them.

It was only a matter of time before the sloop began to pull away from the other vessels and the docks, just fast enough to begin to tug on the wooden creation tied to the tiller. Steering didn't feel too off, just perhaps a little slow, dragging perhaps … though the tall Biqaj was admittedly not paying the normal amount of attention that he could have.

Pash glanced over his tanned, inked shoulder only once, the hint of something in the water not yet distracting enough compared to who he had as his company. Leaning into the tiller, he grinned at the dark-haired huntress with an alluring mischievousness, about to say something coy and promising, only to comment observantly,

“—hmm, I feel somethin’.”

He noted, though the tone of his voice could have implied any number of innuendos instead of just the way his sloop handled, “I should look …”

Sorry, we are kind of pranking Tio with our mushiness. It's only because we love you. ;) Also, I'm really picturing some Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom here where Pash is gonna try and see what's up and Kali's gonna be like, "I'm RIGHT HERE, Dr. Jones."

Chrien's Night, Pranksters Delight

10th Saun, 717

Grinning as the Biqaj moved to get the wind in their sails, the Sev'ryn watched him with an almost predatory gaze on her tanned face, chuckling when he returned to her for another welcomed playful kiss. Lacing her fingers with his own, Kali'rial allowed herself to be dragged to the tiller and humming with delight as the sun-kissed bard pulled her close to him, wrapping her arm willing around his own waist and leaning closer.

Pressing soft kisses across his inked shoulder and up his stubbled cheek, the huntress sighed as she lifted her free hand to run across the bare tan skin of his chest. As Pash smiled at her, she smirked at his comment, taking it entirely the wrong way.

"Mmm qu'ama, I feel something too..." She murmured, moving to nibble distractedly on his earlobe before pulling back in confusion. What did he want to look at? Oh. Pouting slightly when she realised the sailor was talking about his sloop, the brunette sighed.

"By the Immortals bard, it's just the water...or something...I'm sure it's nothing entirely pressing.." Of course, the seafaring minstrel knew better than she what his boat felt like, but admittedly the dark haired southerner was starting to get just a little impatient. Using her free hand to turn his head so he was looking at her, Kali fixed him with a stern eye.

"It has been a very long, very hot, very boring trial. Besides, I can see over your shoulder at this angle and it's- holyMotherwhatisthat?" Her periwinkle gaze had drifted over in annoyance to look at the water behind them, spotting something large and fast following The Muse. Pulling back slightly, hand still on the stubbled face of the taller man, she pushed him to turn and look.

Whilst she had grown up on trade boats, the brunette knew land animals more than she knew oceanic, however whatever was in the water looked familiar and predatory. Why in the Immortals names was it following them? And how did it keep pace so well?

Kali’rial was convincing, it was true, and more than just a little distracting as the seafaring musician attempted to get them away from the dock and out into the harbor before anyone in the nearby vessels found themselves in the front row seats for a naughtier sort of play than was necessary. His eyes fluttered as her lips teased him and he chuckled at her impatient dismissal of his observations, though the tight resistance of the tiller was definitely a growing concern. Pash narrowly missed a large merchant vessel waiting its turn to dock and unload, their hulls bumping in a manner that was not at all friendly.

Someone shouted at them as The Muse glided slowly by, the Rakahi words not lost on the tall Biqaj even as the dark-haired Sev’ryn’s hands reached for his face to make sure she had his attention. He leaned closer and grinned at her not-so-subtle need for his attentions—attentions he was more than happy to give—but then she seemed to agree with him, glaring past his shoulder and into the cold waters behind them.

There was definitely a creature there, under the surface, following them.

“See, I told y’ there’s somethin’—What ‘n Chrien’s ire is that?” Pash began a retort, but his voice fell flat, humorless. Setting the tiller in the break to keep their course steady now that they’d cleared most of the harbor traffic, he reluctantly slid his hands away from Kali’s body as she pushed him in surprise to turn around. So he moved to lean over the stern rail and try to get a better look, trying his best to swallow his worry and stay calm about the whole thing. The dark shape was decent sized and as he squinted at it, parts of it seemed to bob to the surface—a fin like a shark? It moved in a way that was not unfamiliar, looking very much like the large sea predator. But … he’d never been followed by one before. While this wasn’t explaining the stiffness in the movement of his tiller, he was far too distracted to put the two together just yet,

“Looks like a shark. Big, toothy fish that eat other fish. An’ people.” His words were matter-of-fact still, the tall Biqaj’s insatiable curiosity keeping him from losing it all over the dark shape just yet. It hadn’t leapt out of the water to attack them. Or the sloop. So, maybe it was just confused? No, that was far too normal of a thought. This was definitely something else and it made his skin crawl at the possibilities.

The creatures in Scalvoris were strange, and Pash’s thoughts were immediately drawn to the oh-deer … how everyone had thought they were regular deer. But they weren’t.

What if this looked like a regular shark … but wasn’t?

The seafaring musician watched it for a few bits, fear rising in his chest as it continued to tail them, not loosing any distance even as a bit more wind picked up in the sails,

“Chunta! That’s jus’ no’ normal for a shark, though.” Finally more than just concern sharpened the edge of Pash’s voice. They should’ve been able to sail away from it, for The Muse was surely faster than a shark, “M’haps we should give it a warnin’ shot ‘r two with a few arrows?”

If that didn’t work, he’d just have to try to out sail it and then figure out his tiller issues later.

Shark. Yes, Kali knew that word. There had been time on the trade boats where occasionally the sailors had pointed out the fins from the rails. The brunette hadn’t actually seen more than a fin, so to think something with teeth and a taste for eating people was following them was just a bit more than unsettling.

Frowning down at the lurking beast, she heard the change in Pash’s voice and immediately stepped away from the side. If he was concerned about a water creature, the it made sense for her to be as well.

”Do sharks jump?” She asked warily, moving away to walk around the other sides of the sloop lest there be more of them. It was seemingly clear, just one solitary predator on their tail. Looking back at the Biqaj with a nod, the Sev’ryn moved quickly to open the hatch that led to below deck, taking the stairs two at a time and running to her pack. Pulling out her bow and quill, the huntress was back on deck in only a few heartbeats. Slinging the quill over her shoulder, Kali nocked and arrow and drew the bow back, elbow up and arm tensed as she aimed for a spot just by the great beasts nose. Her arrow would just graze the creature, but not enough to injure it. Merely a warning shot.

Breathing out, she released the arrow. It zipped into the water beside the shark, disappearing in the depths only to slowly float to the surface. Behind them, the predatory animal continued to follow, as though her arrow had been completely missed.

”It doesn’t seem to care.” She said with a frown, before nocking another arrow. This time she released her arrow, it definitely grazed the shark, however instead of startling and turning away the animal kept on with its unwavering following. Kali frowned at Pash.

”I’m going to have to hit it. The thing must be blind or...something?” Her periwinkle gaze clearly indicated she was not just concerned, the huntress was confused. Never had she ever seen a beast ignore an arrow grazing so close to its eyes.

Maybe it was more than just a shark.

Oh this was getting good! This was getting great in fact! The pull of the ship had caused the wooden shark to rise up to the surface, and after noticing it Pash and Kali were starting to get freaked out. Kali was even shooting arrows at it! If she hit the shark and it didn't even react would she figure out what was happening, or would its seeming toughness be even scarier? Tio leaned back in his spot at the pier and allowed the grin to break out on his face, wishing for a moment that he had some food to snack on while he enjoyed the show. Popped corn would be pretty good right about now.

Perhaps he should step this up a bit? Get a little bit more evil! After all neither of them knew about his shape-shifting ability yet, so they'd have no reason to suspect that it was him behind his old man disguise. He could have a lot more fun with this.

"Run you kids! Run!" He shouted in his best old man voice, plastering a look of panic and fear over his face. "That shark's a frickin' demon! It's been preyin' on small ships for weeks! Get out of there! Full sail!"

By pure chance a stray wave caused the wooden shark to bob up a bit more for just a second, giving the two of them a flash of a menacing looking pair of eyes and absurdly sharp teeth before it slid back under the cover of the water. The dark of the night covered most of its features, enough to hide the telltale signs of a painted fake, and in a way the obscurity made it seem even more dangerous. After all sometimes the scariest creatures were the ones you couldn't quite see, the ones that were left up to your own imagination.

"Jump? Nah. No’ normal sharks." Pash admitted with a hint of amusement despite the situation, the thought of a jumping shark both funny and even more frightening than the stubborn creature following them. Leaning away from the tiller after setting it into the break, he followed the actions of his lover, turning to glance over the aft rail and squint at the stubborn beast while Kali’rial went belowdecks to retrieve her weapons.

Whatever it was, it was determined. For a moment, he thought he saw something else in the water, something trailing from under his sloop. Perhaps it was following whatever felt tangled in his tiller? The tall Biqaj considered the options, wondering if he’d somehow brushed against a fisherman’s full net in the harbor and gotten his ship caught in it, dragging it along full of fish to tempt the shark. That may have been too outlandish of an idea. But what else was there?

The dark-haired Sev’ryn’s warning shots did nothing but waste her arrows, and Pash frowned with her,

"S’like it’s blind. ‘R confused. Aye, may need t’ jus’ shoot it an’—"

Someone was shouting at them, waving their arms and looking afraid from a rowboat. If the creature was so dangerous, why did he risk the warning?

Looking back at the creature that bobbed in the waves that were picking up as The Muse pulled away from the docks and into the open harbor. Eyes and teeth flashed at him and Pash blinked. The tail wasn’t moving much. It didn’t seem to have the smooth, predatory motions of a shark. It seemed … stiff somehow. Different.

"Dangerous, y’ say? Well, we’ll take care ‘f it then, or at least give it a try. Stay back!" Pash shouted at the enthusiastic old man before he turned to reach for the halyard line and luff his sails, slowing their gentle movement even more,

"Aye, qau’ma. See what an arrow t’ th’ body does. It’s … movin’ strange t’ me. Unnatural-like. Almost like it’s no’ alive—Immortals, I hope it’s not undead!"

If it was, if it’s skin was immune to arrows, well, he’d have to figure something else out. As he turned back to watch, something suspicious tingled the sweaty back of his neck, Saun’s never-fading sunlight burning bright like his curiosity as he tried to put the pieces together and figure out what the creature following them really was.

It just didn’t seem real, the more he looked at it, and yet he knew Kali’rial’s shot would give him more information to go on.

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in.
