Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

Image
Gem probably should have expected to run into wild boar in a forest. Well, he had, but just one or two, not a whole herd. Once the two priestesses had taken off, so had he. Following the people who were clearly more capable was always a safe bet to make, after all. Soon enough, though, there was someone clearly much more capable than the two priestess. His first word of advice to them seemed compelling enough to follow, and before the mixed blood could catch his breath, they were off at a sprint again.

Something about it shifting, changing. It took Gem a moment, but at the sight of seeing the trees move - he came to understand what was meant. This felt like something out of dream he might entered rather than reality, but the world was full of strange things, wasn't it? At last, they slowed and the man explained himself. Not that he could really hear it over his heart thundering in his ears and the very distinct feeling of suffocating slightly as he fought for breath taking priority over all else. But Lynessa questioned his word enough in his stead, bent low and sucking in deep breaths like a fish out of water.

Never leave? It would never let them leave? All Gem had signed up for was a walk in the woods to find some missing children - not to be counted as missing himself. For a moment, he suspected he might just vomit with the possibility fresh in his mind and the general disruption of his system. He could hardly wheeze out a soft, "Gem" before attempting to stand upright. Nope; not happening just yet.

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

Image
Once the group was sure they were safe from the boars, the hunter pulled out a roll of bandages to quickly administer first aid to Sabine’s bleeding wound. Once she was properly tended to, Nicolai began clearing the dense path ahead with his machete.

Flecks of wood and leaves flew in all directions as he hacked a path through the forest. His face was creased into a stern frown as he concentrated on moving as quickly as possible toward their destination.

“It’s good to meet you all.” The hunter said gruffly in response to Lynessa and Geminus, his eyes never straying from the path ahead. Swinging the machete the man sighed when the thunder priestess asked why the forest wouldn’t allow them to leave. There was a sadness veiling his features, a desperation that he hid well.

“Every time we try and leave, the Wood changes. You’ve seen this yourselves, just now.” He turned back for a trill, peering intensely at the group. “There is a strange beast in the Wood.” Nicolai’s voice was barely that of a whisper. “Sometimes we can hear it pass by, but if anyone looks upon it, they can’t recall what it looked like or that they encountered the creature at all.”

The hunter turned back to his job of clearing the path ahead while he continued speaking.

“We believe that this beast is responsible for Mistral Wood going mad and trapping us here. Anytime we hear the creature’s call…the woods change…without fail.”

The sound of his machete chopping down saplings and cutting away branches continued as they moved deeper into the Wood.
“These woods have always been a safe place for us. Even if we did something to offend it, I just don’t understand why it would imprison the children.” These words were said more to himself than to Gem or Lynessa. The group then went silent for at least thirty bits as they slowly made their way along the winding path that Nicolai made for them. From time to time he would stop and examine the sky and the position of the trees to keep his bearings. The forest made no attempt to shift again as they traveled onward.

The hunter softly sighed with relief as he felled a thin reedy sapling that revealed a small forest clearing beyond it. The smell of cook fires and the sounds of people speaking in hushed voices could be heard once the group emerged into the clearing to find themselves surrounded by a camp containing the lost villagers and children they had been looking for. They were all here, several old men and women along with at least eight children of varying ages, including a young boy with a somewhat familiar brown mop of hair and bright blue eyes. It was William, the son of the watchman they had met prior to being swallowed by the Wood. He was alive, if not a bit worse for wear. His clothing was torn in a few places but he was otherwise all in one piece. In the distance several makeshift tents had been erected as survival shelters where adults tended to the majority of the children. A deep, clear stream lay to the western edge of the camp where a couple worn out rowboats have been tied off. The boats are missing most of their oars but they appeared fairly serviceable.

William and boy of perhaps six arcs old raced toward Nicolai, the younger boy sprinting toward the man with outstretched arms.

“Da! You’re back!” He squealed just before Nicolai snatched him up into his muscular arms. The hunter’s face was lit up with a welcome smile.

“Samuel, my boy.” He said softly, hugging his son tightly as if he was afraid that he might lose him if he let go.
“I brought us some new friends.” Nicolai explained once the little boy took notice of the group he had escorted there.
Samuel looked up at them, eyeing the thunder priestesses with a sense of awe before smiling awkwardly at Gem. “Did you get lost too?”
William stood off to the side, looking at the group nervously, but remaining silent. He had clearly been looking for someone, perhaps his father, but was disappointed to only be presented with utter strangers.

"Did....did my Pa send you?" He whispered fretfully, his young round face betraying his concern.

You have now found the group of lost villagers. Decide on a plan of action. They will need to be escorted out of the forest at some point. You can try and do so now or wait with them until the forest calms. Or you can try and investigate other methods of escape, rather than on foot. There are functioning row boats nearby at the stream, but they will likely not be able to carry everyone, and they are missing most of their oars.

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

As she listened to the man’s explanations, Lynessa began to unbraid her toussled hair and ran her fingers through it. She wasn’t at all surprised when she found leaves and small pieces of wood stuck between them. “A beast? How could it anger the woods?” And no one knew exactly what it was? Things were getting more and more unbelievable. How was she supposed to deal with some mysterious creature that no one could remember?

Silence stretched between as they continued their trek. Once the young woman had composed herself, she began hacking away the shrubbery in an effort to assist the strange hunter. They walked for quite a while, enough for Lynessa to start questioning whether the man knew where he was going or not. But then, they finally broke through a clearing was revealed in front of them.

The priestess blinked in surprise as she took in the makeshift camp and its inhabitants. All of them looked worn and their clothes stained with dirt, but none seemed seriously injured. They all stared unabashedly at her, some with awe and some with wariness – and worse of all with a slight glint of hope. It was a look she was familiar with, a look often thrown at her whenever people took in her purple robes – and one that made her inexplicably restless.

Lynessa had expected finding the missing people would be difficult, but it seemed like getting them out would provide more trouble. Most of them had been trapped for trials and these were the people who knew the woods better than she did. Nicolai claimed the woods had always been kind to them, something must’ve changed and perhaps not necessarily the beast. But what? And how were they supposed to work around it?

Fortunately, the priestess wasn’t allowed too much time to grow pessimistic as she watched two young boys running at them. One of them ran right towards Nicolai, the joy and relief obvious on his face. Once the hunter put him down, Samuel turned his attention to them. She couldn’t help but laugh lightly at the boy’s question. “I suppose we did.”

The second boy stayed silent at first, eyeing them with disappointment. Brown hair. Blue eyes. The priestess knelt down and smiled at him. “Yes, yes he did. He’s awfully worried about you, but we’ll get back to him.”

Pressing her lips together in thought, Lynessa let her gaze follow the stream and the boats tied there. Definitely not enough for all of them to escape on, unless it was possible for a few return trips. “I’ve seen the trees move, but does the stream change course too? Does it lead to the village?”

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

A creature that makes you forget you saw it. It sounded almost impossible. But forcing the forest to go mad? That was slightly less feasible. What if it was the other way around - and the creature's call was a warning? If it happened just before the woods changed, every time, perhaps a warning was exactly what it was. Maybe something else made the forest mad and the creature was just dealing with the repercussions of the situation. Now, maybe, he was spinning a few tall tales in his head, but it was enough to fill the silence as they walked, their impromptu guide leading the way.

The sigh of relief from Nicolai was missed as Gem lay eyes on the camp. All those missing people - here. He might have smiled if not for the predicament they were now in. The Priestess Lynessa seemed more inclined to jump to action in getting the people back home, but - even with the stream available, there could be further complications. Waiting it out might be a better idea, but that also ran the risk of them all losing their way.

"How long does it take for the forest to calm, usually?" Gem glanced down at the boy Lynessa had spoken to, then back to the others in the camp. "How often do you hear the beast?"

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

The boy, William permitted himself a faint smile when the priestess confirmed that his father was looking for him. When Lynessa mentioned taking the stream Nicolai frowned whilst giving her a hesitant nod.

“The water does not change, but we tried before and the forest tried stopping us. It was like nothing you’ve ever seen. Vines snatching people from boats and branches clawing at us. No one was badly hurt, but we just weren’t allowed to leave. So we came back here to wait.”

The hunter’s lips twitched with a hopeful smirk. “It won’t be easy, but it might work now that we have more help. I’ll get you both some fresh blades for the trip. We’ll take who we can, those that want to go, the rest can stay until we can get more help.”

So that was the plan. The group and as many people as possible would take the rowboats downstream and try to make their way out of Mistral Wood. Perhaps the water would give them some protection from the forest’s animosity.

The camp was soon abuzz with activity, during that time little William sidled up next to Gem and explained that there was no real way to tell when the forest would change. Only that they heard the call of the beast from time to time without any warning.

Newly sharpened machetes were handed to everyone in the group. Each of the blades was a couple feet long and possessed a faint curve at the end.
Samuel , the son of the hunter that had guided them here soon approached Lynessa and Gem once they were properly readied for the journey.

“Da says for you two to get the boats ready and in the water. “ With the instructions given the young lad ran off toward where Nicolai was speaking in hushed whispers with a circle of village elders. Evidently they were deciding who would stay and who would go.

It was decided that all the children and a handful of adult guardians would go with them. The boats would be filled to capacity, and Lynessa , Gem and Nicolai would each be standing at the bow of a boat with their machete’s, ready to fend off any assaults from the Wood. Three men were also individually stationed in the back of each of the boats with crossbows to provide cover for the defenders.

Once the boats had been properly readied for travel and filled, all that remained was for the group to take their places and prepare for the journey ahead.

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

Vines snatching people from boats and branches clawing at us. After seeing moving trees, that didn’t sound too far-fetched. Lynessa could already picture it in her mind and it did not look pretty. She wasn’t sure what to do against magical vines that wanted to grab you. Again, it seemed like the woods were just keeping them in – for whatever reason. But what if they actually almost got out? Will it become more aggressive or retreat and give up? She certainly hoped it was the latter.

Still, waiting around didn’t seem like a practical solution. How long was they supposed to wait? And how on earth would they know that the forest finally decided to let them go unless they try it? Will it even let them go? Too many unanswered questions if they were to stay here and wait. The young woman was already itching to do something, never one to quite master the art of staying still.

“It won’t be easy, but it might work now that we have more help. I’ll get you both some fresh blades for the trip. We’ll take who we can, those that want to go, the rest can stay until we can get more help.”

People immediately exploded into action now that they had a purpose. More than a few individuals seemed unhappy about the decision, choosing to stay instead and wait for… whatever it was. Lynessa didn’t bother trying to convince them otherwise. She had no real argument on why leaving is a better option. It might turn out to be the worst option, but you never know, eh?

The priestess tested the weight and balance of the blade. It felt alright, although she wasn’t entirely used to long blades. Her choice of weapon was usually a dagger – small, quick, and easily hidden. But swinging a machete around shouldn’t be too hard right? Just… slash at anything the slightest bit threatening.

Lynessa tried to help the preparations the best she could, hauling supplies and reassuring villagers who looked absolutely terrified. There wasn’t much that she could do and soon, they were ready to go.

No use in delaying things.

Climbing into the boat, Lynessa headed to the bow. Once everyone was onboard, the young woman tested the stability of the thing as she moved. The way it swayed at her movement certainly didn’t give her much ability to move freely. She definitely didn’t want to see what the water would do them should all of them fall over.

She glanced at the passengers in her boat, and then to Gem and Nicolai. Her tongue was poised to make a quick quip about this might be an awful idea, but she held herself back. While Lynessa was used to putting her life on the line all the time, these people were genuinely terrified and unsure. And so, the young woman tried to summon the serenity and conviction so many of her sisters naturally possess. “We will make it. By the grace of Ilaren, we will all get home safe.”

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

Gem was not normally one to hold back any objections - but it was apparent that now was not the time for it. There was some hope to the situation, and he was sure that the people stuck here before the pair were in dire need of it. It did not mean that the plan of action was most agreeable. Gem was a lot less pleased with the idea of being snatched out of a boat by branches. In fact, he'd very much like to avoid that as much as possible. But there was a lot he would not be avoiding with this endeavor.

This was why he kept his mouth shut to any sort of rejection to the idea of boats and water, heading over as instructed by the much more experienced man. He glanced over at his fellow rescuers, particularly Lynessa. She seemed most willing to get a move on and make a fair try. Inspiring, but also somewhat intimidating considering she was likely used to doing something like this. He - was not. He was used to cooking and serving drinks and that was it. The mixed blood swallowed as he glanced down at the blades he'd been handed.

A kitchen knife was really as close to using his own blades. He'd never had an express need to use them in the form of combat, and now that he did - nerves were certainly showing. His jaw clenched and he looked back up to watch his footing as he got in the boat. This wasn't so much about how much he thought this was bad idea - and it was something of the worst idea - but he would rather partake in it than be left out. He just hoped he wouldn't be entirely useless in this whole debacle. His usual animation went instead to his jitters, chatting up the children behind him the hopes to distract both them and himself.

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

Image
A group of the remaining adults remained on shore, watching with sad smiles as the children and their adult guardians were pushed off from shore and set adrift in the current of the stream. The three boats drifted forward in a single file line and the camp of villagers soon disappeared behind them.

The few other grown-ups that were with them sat down and began rowing as best they could to speed up the vessels. Before long they were moving at a fairly moderate clip through the murky waters of the creek. Trees rose on either side of them, with vines and moss hanging down that made the area seem all the more claustrophobic. Children whimpered while looking around frightfully at the dark canopy above them.

Wind began blowing in from the west and sent the branches above them to groaning and scraping eerily against each other. The men with crossbows at the back of the boat tensed at the sounds and raised their weapons in fear.

“Steady, steady.” Nicolai called from the boat near the back.

The wind eventually died down and the sound of the branches moving died away.

Silence followed for what felt like an eternity but in reality it was only a matter of bits.

Then suddenly a shuddering screeching call came tearing through the forest. It sounded similar to the call of the creature from earlier but this beast was clearly in pain. The sound came from the north and it was quite far away. The children in the boats cried out in fear as the vines and branches above them began to writhe and shift in response to the sound.

Screams split the air and the forest came alive.

Gem’s boat was in the middle, between Nicolai at the rear and Sister Lynessa at the front and his was the first boat to be attacked. Thin, rope like vines shot toward the young man, one encircling his left leg and another heading straight toward the wrist that held his machete. He maybe had a couple trills to act before the vine latching onto his leg was snatched back, hoping to throw him from the boat and into the water below.

Nicolai had his own problems at the rear of the procession of boats. Branches has dipped low across the stream to block the path of his vessel. The hunter was madly hacking away at the limb as the crossbowman at the back of his boat wildly into the canopy in a blind panic.

“Keep going! We'll catch up!” The hunter shouted at Gem and Lynessa while his massive arms strained to chip away at the massive branch blocking his route.
The boats ahead didn’t have much of a choice as they were slowly pulled further downstream by the current.

Lynessa’s boat was at the lead, and the priestess had to defend them against the coming onslaught if the rest of the rowboats were to make it through. Two scythe shaped limbs came swinging viciously down at her feet from both sides of the shore, hooking into the front her boat, stopping it immediately in the water and dipping the bow forward so much that the children all slid forward whilst screaming in fright. It would be difficult to keep her balance on the front of the boat but not totally impossible. Lynessa would need to get the boat free before anyone had a chance of escaping this accursed place.

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

As they began drifting down the creek, Lynessa watched as the shore was finally finally lost to the trees and turned her head to the path ahead. So far, nothing had happened. The thick of trees guarding them on both sides made her worry, but no writhing vines or moving trees. The passengers of her boat were all locked in a tense silence, eyeing their surroundings like a monster might ponce at them any moment. Everything was calm. Perhaps too calm.

“Be ready,” the priestess warned. She couldn’t even say what to be ready for.

Bits went by before a screech tore through the woods. The young woman could feel the creature’s pain reverberating in her bones. And just like what Nicolai said, nature came alive in response to whatever creature that was.

The first scream came from behind them. The priestess whirled to see what was going on. Vines had surged for Gem’s boat, while the trees had cut off Nicolai’s from the rest of them. Things weren’t didn’t seem so good.

“Keep going! We'll catch up!”

It turned out that looking back was a bad idea. She almost missed the tree limbs entirely. At first she thought it would try to knock her off, but no, it was smarter than that. It grabbed hold of her boat and tilting it forward.

Lynessa grabbed the side of her boat to keep herself from falling down as the whole vessel tilted forward. People cried out in fear as the bodies surged forward. Her eyes scanned the situation swiftly, taking note of problems in an instant – as she was trained to do. Not that any of her training would ever prepare her for trees and plants attacking her.

Wasting no time the young woman straightened and pointed at four men who were all clutching at their machetes with wide eyes. “Hack off the branches. Fast. As fast as you can. Two on each side.”

Next problem, she thought to herself as she watched the people gathering at the front of the boat.

“We need to get to the back of the boat. If we’re all here, the whole thing might fall over!” she shouted over the chaos. She couldn’t be sure if the children understood her, so she began making her way to the back of the boat and tugging people to move to the back with her. It took longer than she would like but everyone finally get what she was doing.

Lynessa looked around trying to find another sign of attack. She turned to the men with the crossbows. “Anything come coming at us. Shoot.”

The machete would be handy if they need to cut through things, but it minimal reach. Lynessa wasn’t sure about what she was doing, but she grabbed an oar with her left hand and resumed her place at the front. The thing was heavier than she expected, but she hoped that it would allow her more ease to knock… whatever else that might decide to latch on their boat.

As soon as she got the front again, she would try to help whichever side that was still struggling to cut the branches off.

Rescue Me (Sabine, Lynessa, Khama, Gem)

Image
It was the role of a Thunder Priestess to lead the people; to guide them toward the best and safest course. To-trial Lynessa truly stepped into that role and took command of those around her. The children looked on in a mixture of awe and fear as the Priestess took charge to get them out of this terrifying situation. The boat was tipped forward by the scythe like limb, but Lynessa understood that they would all need to work as a team if they were all to escape.

Those in the boat armed with blades and machetes jumped into action at Lynessa’s command, moving forward toward the bow while she managed to coerce the children into sliding toward the back. This provided just enough ballast to keep the vessel from capsizing. Within a dozen trills filled with panic and screams the other villagers had managed to hack through the dagger sharp branch that had pinned them down.

The boat was free.

Expressions of relief and admiration were sent toward the Priestess. It took a great deal to remain calm when faced with danger.

Behind Lynessa, Gem’s boat was still under attack from the vines, thankfully the villagers seemed to have taken heart from Lynessa’s example and taken command of the situation.

Sounds of struggle could be heard further down the stream where Nicolai and his vessel had been blocked. They too were fighting for their freedom, but the rest of the boats couldn’t stop now and go back if they had any chance of escaping.

The Wood seemed especially perturbed with the Priestess now as vines shot out toward Lynessa like whips, intent on lashing themselves to her left arm and dragging her into the stream. There was a moment of struggle while vines grasped for her, at least several trills, however without warning the vines and the trees went utterly silent, freezing in place. The children in the boats squeaked; their screams and cries dying out in astonishment at the sudden placidity of the forest.

Everyone was speechless, Mistral Wood seemed to brighten; losing the dark gloom that had been hanging over it for the last few trials. The creature that had summoned the wrath of the forest had gone silent and the boats drifted gently downstream. Water softly sloshed against the hulls and the children waited with bated breath as the group made their way toward the edge of Mistral Wood.

The journey was blessedly uneventful, even Nicolai and his boat eventually caught up if only a little worse for wear. At one point Lynessa’s boat was caught on passing root and everyone on board shrieked in a panic before realizing that they were not in any danger.

The sky was gray with a mixture of blue up above as the woodland thinned out around them. Eventually the boats could be brought ashore before making a brief ten bit walk to the north that would bring them directly out onto the edge of Mistral Village.

They had made it. They were home.
