The time had finally come to announce the the wedding to the world and of course, in true style of his mother, it had to be done through a party. So the guests had been invited to the Northern Krome house to take part in festivities and a feast to celebrate the union of Krome and Andaris in the engagement of Xander Krome and Celeste Andaris. Xander had been forced into dressing well for the occasion, which resulted in the use of his formal attire. He was sure that soon Cleste would begin to force him to buy new expensive and formal clothes and so he took the chance now to avoid having to buy anything by using these. They were in the Venoran style and fitted well so he could not say why they were an issue but he was sure that the fashionable and more image conscious ladies in his life, his mother and Celeste would make sure he was always suitable.

So he stood in the main hall of his home and mingled with the guests, Celeste by his side as they accepted the congratulations and other pleasantries from those present. It was busy and Xander actually found himself spending more time worrying about them making a mess or causing damage that he and the household that worked under him would have to fix. Still, he met each and every guest with a smile and appropriate greeting, be it a shake of the hand, a bow or a kiss on the hand. He made sure to be correct in his actions now as he was sure he was being scrutinized, especially as he was marrying the heiress of Andaris.

So he continued doing his best to set a good example, keeping up a good appearance for all those around in order to protect the respect for the Andaris family and to try and regain some for Krome. It was still early in the night but he was sure that most of the guests must already have arrived and so with a nod to Badon he made it clear it was time for those int he Kitchen to start work on the shorter dishes that needed cooking. He was looking forward to the feast more than anything else and although he longed to go watch the servants cook he needed to be there. It was his duty and he was not going to neglect it and nor was he going to leave Celeste alone to fend off the hundreds of questions.

So, instead he remained by her side and assisted with the stream of questions they were being forced to answer. A small break came and Xander leaned in and whispered. "These nobles sure want to know a lot, they just don't stop asking questions." He jested of course and smiled at her as he turned to face the next noble face who had come to the party.

The smell of fresh food was soon making its way from the kitchen, although, Xander doubted many would notice as they were too engrossed in conversations or drinking. Most of them had likely not even noticed that Xander's parents were now also wandering around the room, the Baron and Baroness walking through the crowd in search of their son. The serving boy and Xander's father's man servant also wandered around with platters of drinks and occasional snacks to keep the guests going as the meal was prepared.

She had prepared all trial, taking care with how she looked. It would be, after all, what people ~ especially the women who attended ~ would notice first and would talk about. So, she wore a simple, elegant gown which was very much not in fashion. Her dress was a very pale pink, so pale to be almost cream and it was strapless with tiny ribbon sleeves across her arms and ribbon trim over the top and at the waist. The top pulled in to her slender waist, the boned bodice accentuating her figure and the skirt fell in swathes, moving as she did. The only detail other than the shaping of it was the single flower detail at the front, which served to draw the eye to her figure and the delicate embroidery which trailed down one side of the dress itself. The fashion at the moment was for intricate and overly fussy hairstyles, so Celeste wore her hair down, lightly curled and shining. Her make up was done with the intention of accentuating her eyes and lips.

Even she had to admit, as she looked at herself in the mirror, she was pleased.

So, she took Xander's arm and looked at him with serious brown eyes. It was not going to be an easy night, she knew, for either of them and they would need to keep their wits about them. She considered it the first skirmish in a war, and it would set the scene for what was to come.

They stood together, in the entrance hall and they greeted each person who came in. Some of them they knew, some were complete strangers but the staff were there to introduce them, ostensibly under the guise of introducing her to the guests, as Xander's bride to be. Like Xander, she met each guest with a smile, the correct greeting and, quite often, a question about a family member or a hobby, something which showed that she had a personal interest in them and their family. She stored away information, always, and this was where she used it. No matter who it was that was introduced, if Alistair Venora, King Cassander or someone she had never met put in an appearance, Celeste was the very epitome of polite and charming.

She focued on their guests, rather than on Xander although every now and then she made sure to turn and speak to him, asking him about this person or that one, if he knew of them or whether he was expecting specific individuals. Eventually, he decided that enough was enough and they made their way into the hall. She quite concurred that it was time to do that, the guests who were going to arrive probably had.

Then, it was into the hall and now, they did not have the excuse of having to greet the people behind them. They were questioned so closely that when he turned and whispered to her about it, Celeste answered in a quiet whisper and with an apparently entirely serious tone, "If I did not know better, Lord Krome, I would say that interrogation training had been a mandatory condition to attending." Her facade did not slip, not for a moment but she was teasing there was no doubt. "Perhaps your parents insisted?"

For those who noticed such things, the young heiress to Andaris answered most questions in much the same way. No, they had not discussed that yet. Perhaps Baroness Krome might have some ideas about what her and Baron Andaris, Celeste's father, had discussed regarding venue. Yes, she was sure it was going to be in Saun, although she did glance to Xander for confirmation there. Once he gave her the slight nod, though, she smiled and turned back to the aunt who was asking.

On the more personal questions, things such as how they met was answered with an honest, "Oh, I arrived quite a few trials ago now. Travelling in Cylus was quite difficult, but Lord Krome has been most accommodating." With a bright smile to Xander, the like of which he had not seen for quite a few trials, she continued, "We have been very lucky to be given this time by our parents, where we can .." ever such a slight pause as she thought of just the right term, "learn about each other."

There was going to be a feast and Celeste was more than looking forward to sitting down to that because, quite frankly, her feet were killing her. She smiled in greeting to the next guest, barely noticing who they actually were.

28th Ashan 717
Raven's Hollow was an old, very old, inn located on the north-eastern border of Warrick. The establishment had been passed down many generations and the inside was just the same as Rafael remembered it to be from the last time he'd been there, almost ten arcs ago. Accompanied by Olyfer, his trusted tutor and advisor, as well as five soldiers from Warrick, he had settled down to stay the night at the inn and travel towards Endor come daybreak.

An exhausted looking courier with wild, curly hair had found him just the night before and delivered a message with the seals of Krome and Andaris on it. Upon receiving it, Rafael had withdrawn into his room and, after having read it, almost tossed the invitation to Xander and Celeste's engagement party into the fire. But Olyfer had stilled his hand and read the letter with careful attention. While Rafael steeled himself for a lecture on how he was supposed to attend, the elder advisor chirped a far different tune this time. "Without meaning any offense, Lord, but if you are invited, then so is all the other nobility of Rynmere," Olyfer said with a teasing smile. Rafael stirred to protest, to say that he didn't care to see any of their smug, gloating faces again, but Olyfer continued as he slunk down in a seat near the edge of the fire. "I've heard rumour that Cassander, who you so despise, pulled a great trick on Veljorn. It is said he disguised himself as a slave and mingled with Veljorn's servants until the right moment had arrived to reveal himself."

Rafael huffed and crossed his arms over his chest. "If you mean to say that he likes being dramatic...I had figured as much myself."

It wasn't often that Olyfer took the liberty to adress the greenest Warrick by his first name, but when he did, the boy knew he was being serious. "It's not about theatrics, Rafael. Like him or not, Cassander's move was a smart one. He was able to study his enemies up close."

"But," Rafael countered, "they're not my enemies, the other nobles I mean." He thought of his encounter with Peake Andaris and shivered at the menory. "Not all of them at least."

"Are they not? Who is to say? It would be wise to know who will be your friends and who will be your foes when the time comes for you to reveal your true allegiance."

Rafael sighed, Olyfer was right of course, he always was. "So..." his voice trailed off into the dark as he leaned his back idly against the stone wall near the hearth, "what exactly are you suggesting?"

A faint smile played at Olyfer's lips. "To forget about Rafael Warrick and to become someone else." His smile widened as he leaned forward in the creaking chair while the fire cast a demonic shadows on his face. "You wouldn't believe the kinds of secrets nobility entrust to their loyal servants..."

---

He'd arrived in Krome two trials early and exchanged his good clothes for those of a commoner. The difference it caused was stark, but not stark enough for Olyfer's liking and the elderly man convinced him to visit a barber and Rafael reappeared with a much shorter hair, losing almost an arc in appearance in the process. Yet, he had no way to change the color of his eyes like the Biqaj, nor could he remove the light scattering of freckles over his nose and cheeks. If anything, those more intimately acquainted with him might consider him Rafael Warrick's lost, younger brother. The greatest disguise however was the change in mannerism. He'd always been of a more brusque disposition than befitted a noble, and having spend many days on the road with five Warrick soldiers had aided him in learning looser manners and less refined manners of speech. Nevertheless, he still knew enough of etiquette to not be mistaken for a complete commoner, and when he applied to work in the kitchen a trial before the feast started, he was readily accepted and given the task of serving dishes (which he claimed to have extensive experience with but failed to mention to be on the receiving end of).

And so it was that Rafael, now known as Olston, strapped in the tight, uncomfortable clothes that had been alloted to the servants, weaved through the ever growing crowd with a platter of delicate snacks balanced on his arm. He was just beginning to think that Olyfer had been tricking him into this absurd plan for his own amusement when he spotted the nearly-engaged couple amid the crowd. Careful not to bump into anyone, he made his way over with the most grace he could manage. "Lord Krome, Lady Andaris," he spoke politely, "any refreshments?"

He had not met the young wolf of Krome nor the stunning Celeste before, and his deception relied on them not recognizing him at all. The other nobles could prove more problematic, but he didn't linger on the thought too much. For now, his goal was to serve the couple in the best way he could and attempt to stay within ear range of them at all times, hoping that perhaps some secrets would be spilled when they thought no one was listening. One secret was already revealed to him: Celeste Andaris had a terrible taste for color with that pink dress of hers.

He kept a straight face at her joke, knowing he needed to keep up appearances and responded in a similar tone to her own. "Perhaps, or maybe they are all agents for your father to check on us." His tone was serious but his eyes did give away a slight hint at his jesting, he would not insult her house seriously of course. He remained by her side helping her to answer or deflect any questions they were asked, reassuring her when she was not certain and overall acting as secondary to most of the questions. She was certainly better at all this than he and so he studied her ways learning for the future.

He was impressed at how well she could deflect questions from her to his parents, helping them avoid awkward topics or questions they had no or little answer to. He continued from where she left off with her story of how they met. "Yes, I was most happy to see that I had been chosen to marry such a stunning and influential woman." He smiled at her then the inquisitor. "We are certainly lucky to be given time to explore one another's talents and also hobbies, to learn who we are apart and together so we can marry and have a happy life together." He thought it might have been an aunt asking, yet then again it could have been a random Andaris woman, he could not tell.

Finally a servant approached, carrying a platter of small snacks that looked most delicate and unfilling. Xander could not wait to finally sit down at the feast and eat some proper food. He still took a couple of small, he wasn't even sure what they were, to eat. "Thank you." He smiled and looked at the servant. Someone he did not recognise surprisingly, as the steward of the house he knew all full time servants, so it must have been someone hired by his parents for the silly party they had to have. Xander had never really understood the need for such parties but as a noble he had little choice in attending. The boy was nothing special looking but Xander made sure to examine his face so he could find him later in order to thank him for his service that night as he would all the servants who worked that night.

Then he awaited to see whether Celeste would eat anything and if so he would allow her to take the food before moving on to the rest of the guests. The dinner would soon be ready, likely just a few more bits and then they would be able to heading into the dinning room and eat.

It had been two arcs since Yndira last stood within the Lord Krome’s home. She had also attended a party, then. While she was not alone the first time, her appearance this trial was by herself. Many had heard of the gathering and the announcement of Xander Krome and Celeste Andaris, including the Naer. It had piqued her interest, considering her last interaction with Xander. She had found him to be quite likeable by her standards and thus supposed she might as well attend the party.

Which lead to her being part of the procession of nobles lined up to greet the pair. Her style of dress had not changed much over the course of the arcs. Her dress was of blue satin, sleeves off the shoulders. Thin straps crossed over the hollow of her neck, though they were more decorative than essential to holding up her dress. The sleeves were lined with lace, just as the hem of it was. It stopped just at the knee, giving the other attendants at the party an eyeful of shapely leg. The dress itself hugged her curves neatly.

Her smile was more practiced than genuine, though it did lean towards the latter as she approached the betrothed duo. She had never met the Andaris girl, but she could only imagine what a possible interaction later in the evening would be like. Instead, she turned her attention to the face she knew better.

”Lord Krome, we meet again.” The delight in her voice matched the brightening of her expression as she greeted the noble.

"Thank you, just some water please?" Was Celeste's response to the servant who asked about refreshments for them. "Although, if you wish, I can linger over choosing a while so at least you are not having to walk constantly." She smiled at the young man who was squeezed into tight clothing and serving the guests. "I am reliably informed that there was food for all the serving staff before and there will be a meal provided afterwards," she added afterwards. It was bad enough for them that they had to endure this but the serving staff must positively hate this kind of thing.

Her lips lifted in a smile, however, at Xander's apparently serious suggestion that the interrogation training had been ordered by her father. "I would put nothing past him." Her brown eyes briefly, oh so briefly, twinkled in amusement. She watched as Xander took a few of the small delicacies and she smiled at him. "Lord Krome, I do believe that you are hungry again?" He was always hungry and somehow, these small delicate snacks seemed to almost be an affront to him. There was no doubt in Celeste's mind that he would be wondering where the proper food was.

Then, the next guest arrived and she was beautiful, wearing a daring and flattering dress and she addressed Xander with an expression which lit her face. Not a noble, Celeste judged, or at least not one that she knew. Certainly, were the lady in question of noble birth then she would not greet just one of them, ignoring the other. Celeste, however, was a daughter of Andaris and she would rise above such petty insults. She smiled a gentle smile at the woman who spoke in such delighted tones at meeting her fiance. All of Celeste's attention was on the woman in question, but she did not speak until spoken to, or introduced.

And she was quite sure that she did not feel at all possessive or jealous. This woman was gorgeous, obviously knew Xander and was ignoring her. He had assured her that there had been no previous lovers in his life, but why then was this one so pleased to see him? Nothing showed on Celeste's face but she determined that, should this woman think that she could be a fly in the ointment of their plans, she was going to pour a glass of red wine over her and claim it an accident. She smiled in greeting and listened, most attentively, to Xander's response.

Xander observed Celeste’s kind offer to the serving boy, he was glad he had been engaged to someone who apparently cared about the slaves and servants as much as himself. Although he couldn't help but think she wished to delay the boy as much as to help herself as him. The longer he was there the longer she had free of talking to the multitude of busy body guests. He would have loved a break from their repetitive and boring questions, politics was a slow game. Of course he could not insult any of his guests by trying to rush through the meetings but he really did wish that he could get to the point of things. Alistair Venora had been good for that, he had not beaten around the bush for too long.

”Indeed, it seems my stomach will never be satisfied. Apparently the need for food far outweighs the need for a fine figure.” Of course he was able to keep a good figure from his exercise and the fact that he did limit and balance his diet well. The key to being healthy was a healthy diet and consistent exercise regime, at least that was what he had been told and learnt in the past. It was working for him at least, his body was well formed and covered in lean muscle. Much different from his father's body now, fat and heavy set was what his father had managed to end up with. Xander actually looked much like his how his father had when he had been young. He was drawn from his thoughts by the approach of a familiar face.

He had not expected to see her again, it had been a couple of arcs since their first meeting. In truth he was amazed she remembered him, he must have made a lasting impression. For some reason though he immediately felt uncomfortable, for some reason it seemed these two were never supposed to meet. He had no clue why that would be, it wasn't like they were past lovers or anything like that. Something just felt awkward about the encounter and he couldn't put his finger on it. Perhaps he thought Celeste might misinterpret how the two were friends, he knew he might do the same if his fiancé were to greet a handsome young man who had been an old friend out of the blue. Of course he could been worrying for no reason at all.

He smiled at the young lady, as attractive as she had been two arcs earlier. ”Well well, I had not expected to see you here Yndira, I suppose our paths were destined to cross again. It is a pleasure to see you again.” He raised her hand to his lips politely as he had done a hundred times tonight already to the many noble and rich influential ladies present this evening . ”May I introduce my most wonderful bride to be, the noble Lady Celeste Andaris.” He gestured for the two to look to one another and greet in whatever way they felt necessary. Although there was an air of discomfort and content in the air.

”And of course Celeste, this is the lovely Yndira Kraelin. She is an old friend of mine, I had not know she would be attending. However, she seems to have a bit of skill at showing up at these important events.” He remembered the first party she had attended at this house. He couldn't remember what the party was for just that she had been there and made it much more bearable with her interesting game.

Yndira had not intended to purposefully ignore the Lady Andaris. It was more comforting than not see a familiar face, especially considering the events earlier in the season she had gone through. Her side still ached from the blade that had been plunged into it more than ten trials ago. She, however, did not allow this to show on her face. Instead, her smile widened at his recognition of her. Just as he made the impression on her, it would seem that she had done the same to him. "A pleasure, indeed. You've been well, yes?" Her knowledge of common remained limited, but there was no helping it. She'd at least picked up on a bit more and thus it had improved just a touch.

She was soon officially introduced to his bride-to-be, Celeste. She was, as all accounts might have made her out to be, beautiful. Dark hair that flowed over her shoulders, sweet brown eyes; Xander had been fortunate. Hopefully she had brains to match that beauty. The Naer's smile was polite as she greeted the woman. All these niceties, and for what? There would need to be something gained from this, or it would be for nothing. Her memory of her last visit was clear only in that she had spent some time with the young Lord Krome, though her partner was lost in a long list of them.

As far as she could tell, none of the guests had heard rumor of her actions in Andaris. Perhaps they had all been oblivious to it, or maybe they did not care. They had the money and positions to hire personal guards; they could have easily dispatched of a threat if the guards were skilled enough. This gave her only a moment's solace as there soon loomed the question of whether Celeste had heard anything of the matter. But, then again, it was possible the woman might not have even been in Andaris at the time.

"How long in Krome?" Not the most elegantly worded question, but what could she do?

Xander's quip about his appetite caused a soft and slight smile to light Celeste's face. She was very much playing the role this evening and she knew that they were being watched. Everything they did, everything they said was observed and it was necessary that it was all correct. Celeste did not want to be married, but if they were going to be then they would have the political union which they both desired. Add in to that, Xander Krome seemed to be a good man, a kind one. Celeste was sure that she could maintain this relationship with him.

"My Lord Krome makes a most impressive figure. A few delicacies will do no harm." It was a careful juggling act, she knew, keeping the balance between overindulgence and enjoyment; it was one she was very focused on.

However, thoughts of such fled from her as the beautiful woman arrived and she recognised that Xander was uncomfortable. He was, she did not doubt it. Was this a former lover? He had told Celeste that he had none such, but men lied and as Celeste smiled a gentle and welcoming smile, she wondered if he had. Why else would he have tensed, after all? He had the demeanor of a man watching two women meet who he would much prefer did not.

It was good information to have and Celeste stored it away. Little snippets like this were important; they were potential and information, they were possible weaknesses to be exploited. So, as Xander introduced her, Celeste watched him, but more so she watched her. She could quiz Xander later under the guise of jealousy, which she was quite sure she did not feel. But this woman was much more limited in terms of Celeste's access to her. "Yndira. An absolute pleasure to meet you."

Celeste had polite down to a well trained art, but when she spoke to Yndira, she injected pleased and curious in to it. As she had done as many times as he had kissed a hand tonight, Celeste inclined her head towards the woman. "I love your dress. So daring. You'll have every man's eyes gazing upon such beauty." Including Xander, she did not doubt. No, not jealous at all. She was quite sure of it.

"Oh, since the beginning of Cylus. Arranged marriages, being what they are, Xander and I decided to spend some time growing to know each other. It makes sense, we thought." What about you, Celeste thought, what are you doing here? What is it you wish to gain here? There was something, she was quite sure.

Still, the next guest was behind her and so Celeste did not feel that she could ask any more questions, instead she smiled and seemed to be quite content to let Xander and Yndira catch up,while she considered ways that she could use this to her advantage.

Xander remained quiet as Celeste answered the questions addressed to her and commented on the dress. He was unsure what to think of the statement and he looked at Celeste a glimpse of confusion and concern in his eyes. Still he simply smiled and nodded as was his duty at these events. Although, in truth, he would much rather have played the game that himself and Yndira had played at their last meeting, it had been quite enjoyable. "Indeed, you look charming Yndira, perhaps you will find yourself a noble young man to match you tonight. There are certainly plenty scattered around." He smiled, looking around the room as if he were in search of someone for her.

Celeste then continued to speak, telling the old acquaintance of her arrival and time here so far. It had in truth been a short time but it felt much longer, like he had been learning about his fiance forever but learning only limited detail. Still it was changing and he had noticed that more truths had been leaving both of their mouths of late. "Yes, better to know the one you will be marrying than find out you hate them or something last bit."

Xander knew the food would soon be ready and, of course, the line to see them had grown yet again. "I am most sorry Yndira, perhaps I can find you later and we can catch up some more but just this moment it appears we are very popular." Xander chuckled as he looked at the impatient guests stood in their semi uniform line. "Go on now, find some new friends out there in the crowds, you will have no trouble I am sure. I will find you later and we can discuss your life since our last meeting." With a formal kiss of her hand and a smile he allowed her to depart, preparing himself for the next guest with a momentarily tired look on his face.

"It looks like we will be here all night." Xander murmured to Celeste as he forced a smile in greeting of the next guess, knowing this was what the trial held for him. So with a mental grumble and stream of complaint he continued to greet until he would be saved by the kitchens and the serving of food.
