Saun 2, 716, Morning

When Vera awoke, it was dawn. Her calm was sacrosanct, making it difficult to rise … she lay in bed, on the precipice of a full awakening. A paper lay crumpled at the foot of her bed, but she kicked it aside and stretched herself out as she rose, hair frazzled, an expression on her face like that of stone - mornings were never pleasant, and she’d just slept from daylight-to-dawn. It was the best she’d had in many trials … and today she did not have to come to work, so that was special in her mind.

She rose and walked over to retrieve a simple sack from a nearby surface. Within were her simply toiletries - she retrieved the hair brush and ran it through her hair, yanking out the tangles as if by habit. She didn’t need a mirror … she didn’t even own one. Her job was great, but she held on to her money instead of spending it. She’d considered splurging, but there was something humbling about living without convenience. It kept the therapist from stagnating.

Her mind finally returned to that paper. S’ketta’s note. Her chest heaved out a sigh as she bent down to pick it up, unfolding it, looking upon the page one last time before tearing it up within her hands right down the middle, and then across, and then the pieces, and those pieces of those pieces as she walked toward the rising sun and threw those fragments off the balcony. They twinkled in the light like stars as they descended into the murk below, floating on that dark river that smelled somewhat bad when you got too close.

Wrinkling her nose, Vera went inside. She never knew what to do with herself when she had free time - practice? She needed someone else for her magic. I’ll pay the Seekers a visit … I’ve perhaps been shirking the duties I’ve been assigned. But first...

The psychologist had adopted a morning routine - stretching, balance, and physical health. Another doctor had seen her and grown worried about her sickly appearance. They told her to find more protein for her diet, and to stretch every morning - go for a run! She was fine, but it did help her mind stay clear of that which clouded it.

Beginnings of a Mental Acrobat

Walking to the center of the room, Vera prepared herself for some basic stretches. Her nostrils flared and her chest rose from the intake of wind, exhaling and letting everything hang limp, abdomen scrunching inward - she leaned forward, bending on one knee, her other foot placed far away from her on the floorboards. Her knee sent waves of pain through her as she placed weight upon it, but she just gritted her teeth and muscled on through, letting those ligaments and tendons get suitably worked.

Twisting on her ankles, she kicked the leg she was leaning on back and brought her other leg inward until she rested her weight on that knee, hands upon it. They were called lateral lunges, she was told. The therapist held that position for a few moments, a sharp breath leaving her lips - she was kind of a wimp! With a sigh, she fell flat on her butt, hands behind herself for support.

For her next exercise, Vera stood up on those somewhat pained legs; her calves, ankles, and toes were sore. She stretched her arms out at shoulder level, fanning them out like wings and holding her hands palms down, back straight - good posture. Then, she began to rotate them forward in circles - arm rotations, and these … these were a bitch! After only several, her arms began to ache, but she shifted the subject of her mind to work to counteract this when she could - it failed miserably, the pain just brought her back to reality as her heart rate sped up.

Her goal was fifteen, those circles only five or six inches in diameter as her hands drew them invisibly. Then, she brought them out to wide, foot-long circles that allowed her to throw energy into the shoulders and biceps instead of restraining them with a steady trickle of wear. Finally, she allowed them to windmill wide, even crossing them out in front of her as she sliced the air, feeling relief at the more natural movements blowing wind against her skin and hair.

By the time she was done with that, it was time for the same exact thing … in reverse. Her muscles already ached, so the next round was that much higher. Her limbs begged and screamed as she worked them into submission, Vera bowing her head and shutting her eyes to just get it over with. Soon, the small circles were done, and then the medium, and then the large. Her arms tingled when she was finished, and she rubbed them with her lips curled to the side, eyes fighting an unseen battle within her mind.

It’s time to run … ahh, I hate this. Vera put on her shoes and grabbed her cloak, throwing it over herself and stepping outside into the open air. She looked down the street, knowing she had quite the day ahead of her....

Comment: Felt like you were just about to get to the interesting part and then stopped the story? Try not to make a habit of all these very short threads where your character doesn’t achieve a hell of a lot. Fair warning though, you did just say it was a look at what she does in the morning; maybe try to inject some humour into things like this? Grain of salt though, sweetheart. You have a beautiful writing style, use that puppy!
