The shimmering moonlight danced across the ocean waves as the pale-skinned therapist gazed out upon the bay with her eyes through the small window nestled between masonry, draped in shadow. There was much for her to process … to prepare. Her apprenticeship had ended, but she was left with much to do, much on her mind. A full-fledged therapist, with odd hours - she was permitted to stay behind even when the other doctors were sent home. Only a handful of nurses roamed the halls, but most were busy reading books or dealing with paperwork.

It was no silent night, however. The sleeping medicine for a particularly insane man had worn off - a homeless man, a father to none, but a friend to a knight, lay upon a bed strapped down in the room across from Vera’s magic. There was a book on her desk, laced with wooden bookmarkers on psychosis.

The therapist picked up a paper on the desk, looking it over. It was riddled with notes from the many specialists that had seen him, but her mentor was notably absent.

Patient’s Manifest for Jilkes Aervahld

Diagnosis: Extreme Psychosis derived from trauma to the brain via a hoof to the forehead. Fractured skull, healing … condition shows sign of worsening.

Proposed Treatment: Experimental Medicine, Rest

Vera recalled the meeting where they had discussed the treatment. Everyone seemed to settle on sickness of the mind instantly, particularly psychosis. The reason it hadn’t healed … well, that was partly Vera’s fault. She had no intention of healing him … he was just such a convenient test subject for her abilities.

Reading the information and setting the paper down, Vera grabbed the book on psychosis and flipped through it as she walked from her office, shutting the door behind her and going across the hall, looking side-to-side down the corridor to see if anyone was approaching - he’d been moved into a storage closet since the other patients were being kept awake by his screams, but it seemed better to control who knew how and when Vera treated him … her methods were illegal, and extreme, hardly ‘treatment’ and more for experimentation.

Vera had tucked towels against the door frame, adjusting them as she entered the wailer’s domain. The screams were pretty loud, the man a short thing with a head completely wrapped in tight bandages save for the eyes and mouth. They’d tried to lock his jaw closed, but he just worked his jaw muscles down in response, so the face apparatus simply remained nearby … such poor organization of hospital supplies!

Vera waved her hand over his eyes to see if he would register - he did not. Vivid hallucinations, a complete cognitive dislocation from reality had occurred, and her job was to mend it. Well, failure within her practice was very common … it was an experimental discipline, after all.

The Good Doctor

With the door shut behind her in the makeshift patient ward, Vera set about tuning out the savage screams and moaning from her mind … they made it difficult to focus on what was important. It was difficult, those cries ripping her mind away every chance they got. Her eyes shut, she cocked her head and turned, focusing on one thought - her research, taking in a deep breath. Sadly, this did not work … instead a sudden thought burst into her mind.

Taking in a deep breath, Vera leaned down to the struggling patient who flexed and tugged against his bindings. Then, she opened her jaw wide and screamed against his face. “AAAAAAAAGGGHHH!” she shrieked. Her reasoning for doing so was to trick his brain into registering the noise - perhaps sidetracking it into some other delusion. She had no idea if it would work, but the man fell to shivering whimpers, face contorted, eyes shut.

“You really are quite the mess, Mr. Aervahld…” Vera said under her breath, calming her own breathing … slowing herself down to let her heart rate settle.

With some semblance of calm established, the therapist shut her eyes and closed her fists tightly, focusing on the feeling of her muscles clenching, extending her arms downward and focusing on those sensations to draw herself into an introspective part of herself. That mark under her tongue, Sintra’s blessing … she focused on her spiritual connection, her affection for the goddess, everything that they were.

This finally seemed to work, and soon she could feel the beginnings of her aura extending - she was incredibly unpracticed at the art of temptation given to her through her blessing, but this attempt at clearing her mind in a sort of meditative action seemed to help pull her thoughts away and focus on what was important.

Allowing that aura to extend forward, she fueled it with her will. Guided by her, it washed over Aervahld’s body and mind, feeding Vera with subtle information - fears, desire, longing … despite the mental condition, she soon found he was quite human. Ah… what one could tell through arcana. It was as if he was running from terrors unseen, but she couldn’t pull a good picture out of his mind … he longed for peace. He wished … death? Well, she could ablige that request eventually, but for now…

Singularly, with voice and mind, Vera spoke unto the patient; “calm…” she let that word sink in, before repeating it … repetition seemed to breed acceptance after a long enough time. The patient still fidgeted, but his whimpers stopped. “Calm…” Calm… calm… Her mind whispered to him for several moments before her aura grew unstable and withered away, that connection between them breaking.

He seemed trapped in his mind, almost comatose when Vera looked into his wide eyes, rubbing her hand over them and shutting them. She sighed in relief, smiling at what she had accomplished - a man filled with terrors, given temporary relief by her understanding of the mind, and her power. There was something attractive about that, something … addicting. Introspectively, she wondered if she herself was falling into something deeper, and made a mental note to watch herself carefully … habits were potentially dangerous to someone like her, she mentally reasoned ... bad habits in particular, especially.
