Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

Image
19th Ashan 718
The city had visitors or so Valeria had heard. Very intriguing visitors if the rumours were to be believed. Scalvorians who had flown into Andaris. She hadn't seen it for herself but the Burhan was intrigued and eager to see such sights for herself. It had set her wandering, moving into the Crown in the hopes of finding some information that would point her towards the location of the newcomers. The young woman wasn't thinking of the political ramifications of such a thing, wasn't concerned with alliances and first contacts. The blonde was still not as politically minded as her family might have liked although she tried on occasion. On this particular occasion, she was more drawn by curiosity and the opportunity for gossip.

It was still early in the trial but she had found no sign of the illustrious guests in the seat of the kingdom's power and thus, she drifted from the Crown into Midtown. There were many places in that section of the city that could be entertaining to visitors or useful and so it wasn't too outlandish an idea that she might find word of them there. Lowtown though... there was no way that anyone of decent rank would be found there. If they were there, it'd be discreet of course and therefore, she'd be none the wiser about their whereabouts.

It was while she was drifting near the Butcher's Shop that an odd sight caught her eye, or more specifically, an odd individual. It was a woman, something wild about her and her style of dress... there was a feminine shape, Valeria could see it but there was something about her manner, her movements that gave her an air of something wild, untamed and also masculine, at least in the noblewoman's eyes. If she had moved that way, her mother would have had her head on a platter.

She felt oddly drawn to her, creeping closer so she could get a better look at her and thus, she was within earshot of the middle-aged man who was trying to accost her. It wasn't Vin or Videer, the men who owned the butchery shop, but someone else who was merely hovering there, bag in hand to show that he'd made some recent purchases.

"I see you eyeing the meat in the windows, love. Like meat, do you? Well, you won't find a finer piece of meat than right here. Finest meat in Andaris. The best sausage!" he called out to the wild woman, making a gesture that made the blonde pull a face of disgust. Horrible, lecherous man. His comments only grew more ridiculous, his innuendo more obvious and it made the Burhan want to close up her ears.

"C'mere and have a taste. C'mere!" the man leered, moving closer, constantly closer and with that wild look about her, it didn't come as a surprise when the woman turned on him, like an animal. Valeria squealed, hands flying to her mouth. It was something she could not bring herself to witness and yet she could not stand by and do nothing. The man didn't stand a chance against that wildling and if she attempted to bolster his strength... No, it was the woman she must try to tackle. She would have to try to calm her and there was only one option: Memorize.

The blonde drew as near as she dared, closing her eyes and resting her hands on her abdomen, seeking her diaphragm as she inhaled deeply, feeling her lungs fill. Zanik, give me strength, she prayed silently, calling on his power, the mark he'd given her so that it surged through her. The faint golden aura rose on her skin as she hummed, warming her vocal cords. When she opened her mouth, she chose the tune of a well-known lullaby, its sound soothing although the words were her own.

"Quiet now, child. Be calm and still. Soothe your rage," she sang, repeating the refrain over and over as she felt power thrum through the syllables. She could force the other to do nothing but she could coax. She simply hoped that the woman would hear her.

While she was busy working her magic, others were running, word spreading about a fight outside the butcher's shop in Midtown, the woman's description sure to reach certain ears who would recognise her for who she was: Ela Wolfsdotter.

C'mere and have a taste. C'mere!

Many men spoke words they would regret. Words that started fights, caused wars, lost them family or loved ones because of one stupid set of words. But this man? Ela would make sure that there was nobody on this world able to regret their words more than him. Burning, sickening rage came over her as the clawed woman turned to him with a wild slash, clawing three cuts across his chest, causing a cry of pain and an array of faces to turn and look.
"Stupid! Fucking! Prick!" she screamed, each word a new slash as the man was knocked on his back, screaming in pain, with not even a slight attempt at fighting back. His hands tried to cover his face and his knees came up to his chest as the woman let out a roar, reminiscent of the predators she claimed dominion over. Underneath, the man started sobbing, as Ela raised her hand for a finishing strike, mustering every ounce of strength with the intention of gutting this man alive.

Yet a woman's voice stopped her, causing the rage to slowly fade as she heard the words in her ears. Her clawed hand lowered and the man under her let out a whimper, relieved to have his life yet bleeding massively. While Ela looked away, he quickly made a break for it, running in to a crowd and barging past, nobody making an effort to stop him. Yet despite the scene around her, the voice was all she heard. Her eyes, while still bestial, turned soft and calm.
Slowly and with clear intention, Ela passively made her way to the woman, seeing the source of the voice. A beautiful woman, Ela thought, as she walked over with a curiosity in her eyes - like a confused yet entranced beast. Around her, the crowd looked with some level of awe, both at the rabid animal trapped in a human's body and the girl who's voice could tame such a beast.

It wasn't like Ela to fall in to a blind rage, not that intense. She had bouts of anger, often more than anybody else. This, however, was different. This was reminiscent of her Blood Frenzy, when she'd been starved for too long. All she wanted was suffering and blood, to the man that had offended her. Yet she had no limits, no real control. Had nobody stopped her, there would be nothing left of that man - and for what? Calling out in a lewd and disgusting manner? That was reason to be annoyed, but Ela knew that was no excuse to kill someone.
Without a word, Ela snapped herself out of the trance somewhat, while still keeping eye contact with the woman. It was now she realized how uncomfortable she felt, suddenly close to this woman without having given it any second thought. Before she could speak, however, she heard a shout behind her - causing her to turn back and look.

Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

Image
As it just so happened, the reason the pair had been at the meat shop in the first place was to pick up food for Ela. The younger mortalborn's odd dietary habits weren't generally a problem, barring that it meant that food for her didn't keep very long, so Kura and Ela had to keep buying food for her semi-regularly. This time, Kura had been the one to go inside, since it was semi-busy inside and Ela wasn't doing well with the crowds. When she emerged, however, she saw the man that Ela had attacked and sighed, before looking over at her sister to see her walking towards a complete stranger as if in a trance. "Ela!" she called out, causing her sister to turn and face her.

Kura walked forward, looking past Ela at the woman who had called her. She recognized the slight aura that Elithem gave off and let out a huff of air. "Thank you, miss." she said, nodding at the other woman before turning to her sister. "Are you okay?" she asked, her tone intent, but concerned. In truth, Kura could care less about the man, she had been able to hear his damn catcalling from inside the shop, so she could guess why Ela had attacked him, but it had seemed more savage than her sister was known for. Pausing a moment, Kura looked around at the crowd and thought for a half a trill. They needed to talk about what had just happened, but this was not the place for it.

Looking back at both her sister and the woman who had calmed her, Kura nodded to herself. "Come on, Ela, let's get back to the inn, we'll talk more there." she said, smiling slightly at her sister before she looked back at the other woman. "I'm sorry, we haven't met. My name is Kura Wolfsdotter, and this is Ela, my sister and bodyguard. Would you join us, please? Your observations may be most useful." she said, her tone polite. Hopefully, the other woman agreed to join them.

Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

It had worked. It had actually bloody worked!

Valeria had hoped that she would influence the other of course but there had never been any guarantee that her ability would work, especially when she was dealing with something akin to a feral beast. It was stunning that she'd managed to make the beast woman stop but when she drew back, allowing her victim to escape, her gaze turned to the noblewoman and she could see that she was soothed. It wasn't that she'd made a dent in her anger but rather that she had managed to placate her. It was honestly astounding to the Burhan and she had never imagined that she could wield such power. There was a shadow of temptation to try something more, to make her do something else, simply because she could. However, when the other began to walk towards her, terror choked her voice, forcing her into silence, unable to muster the will to tell her not to turn her anger on her, not to retaliate.

Up close, she could see the bloody mess of her nails except they looked like claws, not ordinary finger nails. There wasn't just blood on them though; there were bits on them that... dangled. The blonde felt her stomach roil within her, raising her hand to her mouth as if that would help her to suppress the urge to vomit. She let out a strangled squeak. Looking away so that it wouldn't be made worse, the young woman's abdomen tensed, a deep retching sound in her throat as her body tried to expel the contents of her stomach. There was a slightly bitter taste in her mouth but she swallowed, panting a little and praying to Zanik that she wouldn't retch again because this time, she knew she'd get sick.

In those few bits while she was trying to control her urge to be ill, the situation had changed. Another woman had appeared, one who seemed to know this brute. To think that she had such an innocent seeming name as 'Ela', certainly not befitting a bestial woman who had nearly shredded a man to pieces. Valeria blinked at the newcomer, confused by how she was talking to this Ela as if she was the victim in this situation. However, that wasn't the only odd thing; she seemed to look at the blonde as if she knew what she was, as if she recognised her aura for what it was. There was definitely some recognition in her gaze but not as if she knew who Valeria actually was.

When Kura introduced herself and named Ela as her bodyguard, the noblewoman found herself speaking before she had a chance to consider her words. "Bodyguard? Seems like other bodies need to be guarded against her!" she blurted, belatedly registering the word 'sister'. "I just mean... well, s-s-she seems like a, uh... force to be reckoned with."

Pink spots appeared on her cheeks, the weak attempt at covering her slip made all the more obvious. She plastered a smile on her face, trying to appear as if she wasn't truly bothered by Ela and her terrifying manner, especially given that this Kura had requested her presence. In short, she would have to try to stomach being in near proximity to this beast.

"I'm Valeria Burhan, Lady and Future Baroness of Senlin," she introduced herself, readily rattling off her titles. "I'm happy to join you and your, uh... sister."

Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

Image
As Kura ran over, Ela watched intently, realizing what had happened as the spell suddenly broke. Yet the anger became mixed, hatred forming for more than the man that she had attacked, but for herself. Why? Why had she lashed out? What was it about civilization that made her so agonizingly uncomfortable it would cause her to attack for near to no reason? She had no care for the man, he could have died and she would feel no remorse. But if this occurred again and risked everything Kura had been building then Ela would have something to care about, taking apart what her sister had worked on because of an uncontrollable spite and fury.
"We need to go" she muttered in reply to if she was okay. When Valeria spoke, suggesting Ela was more of a threat than a bodyguard, a low and hungry snarl tore through the air. She hadn't eaten in a while, it was why she was here - and she was just in the mood for some lunch. Her eyes glanced to the woman with the same feral hunger for a trill, showing the distaste to her comment, before looking back to Kura and nodding when she suggested going back to the Inn.

As the two walked, Ela kept herself close to Kura, almost resting her head on her sisters shoulder. Men and women looked at the pup and the scene she had caused, watching with fear and shock. Ela wasn't used to it, she hated it. In her cave there was solitude and privacy, and in the wild no creatures stopped and stared as you feasted on your fallen prey. Instead they ran with terror, or tried an attack and failed in that too. She was powerful there, she had prowess and nobody could take it from her. But here? Here she was tied down by rules and laws - and she despised it.
As they walked, Ela kept her head low to avoid making eye contact with anyone. Her head ran with thoughts on what might happen, what could be done to her and Kura for her mistake. But she wouldn't let it. If the guards came, she'd tear them from out of their armor with her bare hands before beating them to death with it. Pup or not, the girl had no intention of letting them take her family away from her. Everyone in Rynmere would die before that day.

"I can't control it, Kura" she started, all of her words almost a total snarl. "I don't know what it is, but it's hurting me and making me angry and I can't stop it. It won't stop." the girl almost begged. Her fist was closed as she tried to hide her claws from the world, but it wasn't from shame. It was self-control, trying not to lash out and scratch at a bystander. Her eyes finally raised to Kura, and something in them was different. A tint of red, with slightly narrower pupils.

"Please. Make it stop."

Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

Kura smiled thinly at the other womans comment about bodies needed to be guarded from Ela. "Isn't that the point of a bodyguard? Someone more dangerous than most to protect you?" she said, her tone serious. She did smile more genuinely at the womans compliment to Ela's effectiveness. "Yes, she is rather, isn't she?" she said, before she started leading the way to their hotel room. When she introduced herself though, Kura looked briefly surprised, then nodded. "Eldest daughter of Raakel and Jalen Burhan, yes? Thank you for comin', milady." she said, her tone polite.

The change in Ela's mood as they walked back to the hotel was alarming. Ela was never, ever this subdued. This had been more than a normal outburst, something had gone wrong and it had been something Ela wasn't prepared to deal with. When her sister finally spoke up, Kura looked at her, saw the glint in her eyes, and nodded. "Just hang on until we get back to our room." she said quietly. When they got there, she led the trio into their room, then sat Ela in a chair and handed her the bag of raw meat they had gotten from the shop. "Eat. It's been too long and that's makin' your control slip, on top of whatever's happenin' to you now." she said, standing behind her sister and putting both hands on the side of her head.

"Lady Burhan, what I'm about to do is born of divine power, not magic. Knowing how magic is considered here in Rynmere, I felt the need to explain." she said, smiling slightly at Valeria. Then her eyes turned gold and the scar on her arm started to glow as she tapped into her powers, flooding them into her sister. There was a difference in their powers, to Kura's feelings. Both were immense fires, but Kura's felt in control while Ela's was raging, trying to break through. She had seen this before.

When she took her hands away, she sighed. "Your powers are growing, trying to take a new shape. Focus the way you do when you're trying to turn one of them off. We'll start with that, I think." she said, before sitting down and looking at Valeria. "My apologies, I haven't been the greatest host. Could you tell me what you saw, please?" she asked, her tone polite.

Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

Image
Ela seemed quite eager to go, meaning that they were in unanimous agreement to get moving. However, before they even got underway, Val's bodyguard comment had managed to piss off the feral woman at least although not the woman she guarded. Given that Ela growled though and appeared to have the capability to rip her to pieces, she found that her reaction was rather more important than Kura's. The most that could happen with Kura was cause a bit of social hurt whereas Ela... The very thought of ending up like that man in the street, or worse, made her shudder.

Kura's comment made her brows rise. She had never thought of it before. "I suppose so. I would have thought that they were someone who could handle dangerous people. I never considered... it makes sense to be as dangerous as those you're supposed to defend against. That makes sense," she murmured, following meekly.

As they walked, it was clear that there was a bond between the two women. She wouldn't have imagined that they were sisters but the closeness they showed would have pointed to a blood connection... or a sexual one, not that she could imagine sleeping with the feral woman; it was something that seemed like a date with death. Any thoughts down that route evaporated quickly though when her introduction prompted Kura to name Valeria's parents. If she'd stuck the titles in there as well, it would have been a little spookier but not by much. The blonde's mouth quite literally fell open, etiquette forgotten but she didn't think the other noticed before she closed it again hastily.

"I... yes, that's right. You know your family trees it seems," the Elithem commented, her tone impressed. Her eyes shifting from the silvery-white of surprise to a cloudy grey, the young woman thoughtful. She wondered who the Wolfsdotter was that she had reason to know such things. Her accent was wrong for Rynmere, she thought but even if she was from Ryn, most commoners didn't really know most of the Houses. By the Seven, most nobles couldn't name all of their fellows, never mind keep track of everyone's parentage. Sure, they were expected to learn these things but when there were so many things to learn about the Kingdom and keep track of, they couldn't be blamed for forgetting some of it.

When they got to the room, a glance in Ela's direction showed that she wasn't well but disturbingly, Kura simply handed her a bag of meat. Given that it was straight from the butcher's, it meant it was raw. Her sister was unwell and Kura was giving her a bag of raw meat. Although considering her appearance, the young woman looked capable of devouring a bag of raw meat and taking sustenance from it without growing ill. Still, it came as a shock when Kura stepped behind Ela - even with her warning - and made use of some manner of power. Valeria stared, wondering what it was and wondering if this was how people looked at her if they saw her Elithem aura. When she ceased... whatever she was doing, she talked to Ela about her own powers. Valeria didn't know a great deal about blessings because if you had one, you didn't talk about it in Rynmere and you certainly didn't confer, but whatever was going on with Ela sounded a bit more volatile than her blessing from Zanik.

"Sorry, I know you want to ask me things but... I have a question. Your divine powers... you mean it comes from the Immortals, don't you? Like a blessing from them, yes?" she asked, head tilted slightly, irises a soft curious blue. "Also what I saw? I... There was a man who attempted to um... accost your sister in a very... suggestive manner. She appeared to take offence, very violent offence and I couldn't exactly pull her off so I calmed her down by, uh... singing at her," the blonde explained haltingly, chewing on her lip. "If we're talking about Immortal-given power then I used that too. Probably not the same as yours; mine comes from Zanik so I can usually suggest. It was the only thing I could think to do," she murmured, shrugging slightly.

"Does that answer your question or did you want to ask something more specific? It sounds like there's something wrong with her but that... you don't exactly know what it is. If I can help, I'd be glad, especially if it means that I get to keep my blood inside rather than ending up like that man on the street."

Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

Image
As the three entered the Inn, Ela looked around at all of the people - and her mind went to food. Blood, flesh, the sweet taste it gave her to rip a man or woman apart and feast on whatever they had to feast on. Thoughts of it rushed through her head, the girls mouth almost salivating at the idea. It had, truth be told, been a while since she had eaten - and perhaps the hunger was getting to her. But none of it had ever been this bad, this level of temptation. If Kura wasn't here, people would die - lots and lots of people.
When they sat in the room, Ela took the meat and immediately ripped in to it, her fangs shredding it with ease as she tore through it rapidly. Blood ran down her face as she ate every bite of it she could, feeling how close she had come to losing control. Closer than she had let herself come in Arcs, if not longer - yet this was more. It wasn't just a hunger, it was a desire. Ela didn't want to kill people from the pure lust for food, she wanted to spill blood and tear them apart without a single bite taken for food. But for pleasure, to feed the anger inside her. Her hatred for them all.

"They're growing? How?" the girl muttered, as confused as she was scared of the idea. Last time her powers had developed a man had died, and the body of her own father had been her first meal, after the time she'd spent unconscious. What would happen this time? Would she fall unconscious again, or lash out like she had before? A little panic ran through her as the pup started to sweat. But she would do whatever it took to stop it.
Ela focused on her powers, trying to calm them down as much as she could - more specifically this new power. At first it was hard, but as she let herself focus the girl managed to bring herself to calm down somewhat. It wasn't perfect, anger still ran through her, but it was contained and controlled for now. Slowly, she let the anger fade away, controlling herself - every hint of red fading from her eyes.

"It's...gone" Ela muttered, once the two had done talking, blood and sweat spread across her face before she wiped her arm across her face.

Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

Image
When Ela asked how her powers were growing, Kura could only shrug. "I don't know what makes them grow, honestly. Given the nature of your powers, probably happens on their own." she said, grimacing slightly before looking up at Valeria when she asked a question about their powers. "Yeah, it's loosely gained from Karem, the Immortal of the Hunt, Survival and Wolves." she said, before suddenly looking around the room. "Speaking of wolves, mine appears to be hidin'. Phelan, were are you now?" she asked, apparently into mid-air. There was a shuffling sound from under her bed and the big wolf stuck his head from under the bed, his tongue lolling out in a wolfish grin. "He likes dark spaces." she said, in explanation of the wolfs hiding spot.

When Valeria explained how she had calmed Ela, and what had set her off, Kura just out a huff of air. "I see. Probably an anger-based power attempting to manifest. That's goin' to be fun." she said, shaking her head and tossing her sister a cloth when she said the anger was gone. "Clean yourself up, pup. You know leaving that stuff on you isn't good for your health." she said, grinning slightly. Most people couldn't eat raw meat, while Ela had no issue with it. Kura still poked fun at her sisters diet every so often though.

Turning back to Valeria, Kura nodded. "Don't worry, your blood will stay right where it is." she said, grinning slightly before turning to Ela. "Was it somethin' specific that set you off or just his general behavior?" she asked, her tone intent. Then, to Valeria, she said, "Sorry, there is actually somethin' else I want to ask you as well, you're the first Rynmere noble I've had the opportunity to meet, but give me a bit to make sure my sisters all right, please." she said, her tone polite before she turned her attention back to Ela.

Men Are Worse Than Wolves (Ela, Kura)

Image
Watching Ela eat was nauseating but also somewhat mesmerising. The blonde's eyes remained fixed on the bloody sight more than on whatever powers Kura was exercising because in truth, she'd never seen a person eat raw meat like that before. Dogs, yes, those that had been purposely starved before a hunt but a person? Although given what she'd already witnessed to-trial, Ela was no ordinary, civilised person. No one watching her rip into the meat, splattering herself with blood in the process, could possibly think anything to the contrary.

Still, her sister's presence and voice were certainly calming and centring, especially when compared with her rather different sibling. That being said, she wasn't entirely reassuring.

Once she'd listened to Valeria's questions and explained about the source of her problems, she called out a name, summoning a wolf from under the bed. The blonde noblewoman froze, staring at it with wide, silvery shocked eyes as she remained perfectly still. An assurance that her blood would remain inside her wasn't much of one, not when there were at least two predators in the room with her, the Elithem only able to voice a high-pitched whimper as she kept her gaze fixed on the creature. It was like a big, slightly shaggy dog, more powerful and wild looking but it didn't look ready to spring on the Burhan to rip her to pieces. She hoped that she was reading it right.

Her gaze remained fixed on the wolf, irises shifting to violent storm clouds, reflecting the turmoil in her blood as her heart raced, throat almost seeming to close in so that breaths came in short, panicked pants.

"I think... he was a bit... he was a bit crude," she gasped out, answering Kura's question about provocation, even though it hadn't been directed at her. "Crude and... quite suggestive. Blunt." She continued to watch the wolf, doing her best to inch gradually towards the door, hoping it wouldn't notice until it was too late. If it decided it wanted a chunk out of her after all then she wanted to be able to put something between the two of them. However, she had the itching paranoia that where there was one wolf under the bed, there could be another ready to crawl out and spring upon her from behind. It was not a comfortable sensation.

The blonde unleashed a high, nervous laugh. "Oh I'm glad to have given you the pleasure," she squeaked out, letting her gaze flick between Kura and the wolf. "I take it that you can control that thing and that it won't eat the first Rynmere noble you've had the pleasure to meet, right?"
