35th of Ashan 718

Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Suspicious Behaviour

35th of Ashan, Arc 718
Had the White Fox Inn had more guest rooms, Devin would likely not have noticed the strange couple, but there were only four guest rooms, and thus they inevitably attracted his attention. They had arrived in Viden a few trials before him, and they claimed to be tourists that just wanted to explore the city and have a good time, but Devin saw right through their façade. The way they talked was strange to say the least, and then there were the red-haired woman’s crutches. People usually didn’t go on a vacation when they could hardly walk - which meant that they were here for reasons other than spending some of their money, and he would find out what exactly that was!

When they embarked on another one of their “walks” through the city, he decided to follow them - and wear a hooded cloak so that they wouldn’t be able to recognize him. At first, he thought that they were thieves or con artists, just like him. He had often pretended to be injured or have an epileptic fit so that people would pity him and give him some of their stuff – or stop being watchful and make it easier for him to empty their pockets. When they entered the brothel only to walk out again a few bits later, laughing, he realized that such was likely not the case though.

There was only one reason why people stayed in a place like that for just a few moments – drugs – the selling of drugs, to be exact. He would find out exactly which drugs they had sold, how many of them they had sold and where they had hidden the rest. He planned on helping them by relieving them of their stock so that they would be able to return home faster. He just needed to decide how he was going to do it. Violence?

No, people that thought that their lives were in danger, tended to be loud, and he didn’t want to attract any attention. He would have to do something else, but what? Ah yes, that should do it!

A trip to the nearest clothes shop and some time later, Devin approached Arlo’s and Vega’s door. His normally unruly hair was slicked back, and he was wearing some sort of black leather uniform and a black cloak with a golden wolf’s head on it, and he had a sword at his belt. He had initially planned on impersonating a guard, but he hadn’t been able to steal a guard’s uniform or find somebody who was willing to make him one, and thus he had decided to simply claim to be a member of some sort of secret agency that had rented a room at the White Fox Inn in order to observe them for a few trials before he clamped down.

If he acted confidently enough, it was unlikely that the drug dealers would question him. They would be too worried about ending up in prison. With that thought in mind he knocked on the door.

Vega was struggling with the pain to-trial. She hadn't said anything to Arlo, but he knew. She didn't know why, really, although Arlo would say that it was because she was pushing herself too hard, that wasn't true. The healers in Scalvoris had given a list, a timeframe and she had exceeded that, she knew. But equally, she'd been to the centre here which did physical therapy, but they wanted to charge her nearly a hundred gold nel a session. Vega had nearly fallen off the floor at that, and she'd been firm in not paying that, so she left. Arlo would have paid it, but it was just taking it all too far in Vega's mind. These stupid injuries were taking all their time, stopping them from doing what they wanted to do and hurt, all the time. She wasn't letting them take anything else from them. The man there had said that, if she didn't do this properly, she ran the risk of being in pain all her life, needing the crutches or a stick too. Of course, the implication was that not coming and paying all that money to them meant 'not doing it properly' but he could jog on with his blatant attempts at grubbing coin off them. Still, it worried her.

If she was entirely honest, which she wasn't - not even with herself, it scared her witless. Which made her tense, which made the pain worse. And so, the cycle continued.

And everywhere here had steps. Everywhere. It was like there was a conspiracy or something. She was frustrated, was the bottom line of it.Frustrated with the pain in her legs, the sores on her hands where she held on to the crutches and, all things considered, she was probably not the easiest of people to live with. Maybe, she thought, that was why Arlo had gone out. He said he was going to check on the horses, and he probably would do exactly that, but she also rather suspected that getting out from her and her grumping was part of it.

Then there was the whole separate beds issue. That was a major source of concern for her. Both on her part and his. It was bad for her and she was more than frustrated but Arlo didn't have any of the physical pain which, whilst normally a good thing to avoid, at least meant that she simply couldn't consider engaging in anything remotely frisky. Him though? He was fit, healthy and blessed by Cassion. It must be driving him mad, but it didn't seem to be, which worried her too.

She was getting more and more worked up, felt more and more trapped in this room, this place and her own damn body and she knew she had to do something, so Vega had gone through the exercises she was doing, to strengthen the muscles in her legs. Arlo would say that she should wait for him to be there, but she was perfectly capable she knew and so she did. Except it hurt in a way which meant she had to stop. There were types of pain, some were ok to push through, this wasn't. Vega wanted to scream in frustration, but the people in the Inn would come running. This place had walls which were rubbish at blocking sound; which meant that they were both very aware that there was nothing at all wrong with the sex life of the people staying in the room next door the last few trials.

Right in this moment, Vega was glad that Arlo was out, because she wanted to kill someone.

And then there was a knock on the door. "Hang on!" Vega knew it wasn't Arlo, he walked right in. The people who worked here, knowing her injury, knocked and called out. Vega grabbed her twin walking sticks and made her way to the door. "One trill!" She looked a mess, she knew, but she didn't care. So, the door was opened by the female of the pair he'd been following. She looked pale, was sweating slightly and he might notice that she was trembling all over. "Hello," she said, with a frown. "Who're you?" She didn't invite him in but, by virtue of her having two sticks, she wasn't able to hold the door and it swung open.

Vega's skin has a reflective metallic sheen with a red glow. Her eyes still swirl biqaj colours, but one colour is always bright red which glows like fire. She has a bright red glow in her chest, situated directly under the mark of a heart (Daia mark) in the middle of a glowing silver dragon on her chest (Xiur). She's unnaturally warm to the touch

“Good trial“, Devin replied curtly and studied Vega. She looked like a mess. She was still holding onto her crutches, as if she could barely walk which he found admirable to say the least. She was staying in character, a clear sign that she had some experience as an actress or as a con artist, but unfortunately she had overlooked one small, but nevertheless important detail. The walls of the guest rooms were paper-thin. He had heard them night after night. She definitely hadn’t sounded as if she was in pain and had trouble moving then!

“I’m Alexander Hawthorne, of the Order of the Wolf”, he announced and marched past her into the room, holding himself completely upright, as if he had swallowed a stick. He had decided that his secret agent was going to be a member of a rich and powerful family, cool, proud and confident despite his relative youth. Unlike him, Alexander Hawthorne had never had to worry about how he was going to pay the rent for the next season and where he was going to find something to eat, and he was used to people obeying him.

“And who are you?” he asked and took a look around even though the likelihood of them hiding the drugs in their room and in plain sight was comparatively small – unless they were complete idiots. He never kept any illicit substances near his living quarters so that he would be able to claim that he was innocent should he be found out by the authorities. On the other hand, Vega and her accomplice probably kept the drugs somewhere close to the inn so that they didn’t have to traverse half the city every time they wanted to make a sale.

He just needed to find out where exactly!

“Truth to be told”, he admitted and turned to face her again, the expression on his face unreadable. “I was hoping to talk to your companion, Miss …” he said. Maybe she would be so surprised by his visit that she told him her real name. It would be worth a try. Having a name would make it easier for him to track her down in case she decided to discard the crutches, jump through the window and run (he’d done that before).

“When will he be back?” He raised an eyebrow questioningly, and then he shrugged his shoulders and plopped down one of the beds since he couldn’t see a chair anywhere, and he didn’t want to remain standing. As he did that, he patted the mattress, in case they had hidden something inside of it. “Nevermind, I’ll just talk to you. Now then …”

“Where are they?”
he wanted to know. It was just then that something occurred to him, and he resisted the urge to slap himself (Mister Hawthorne would never do something like that lest he ended up looking like an idiot!). She was pale, she was trembling, and she looked as if she would probably pass out soon. This could only mean one thing!

“By the Fates, woman!” he blurted out. “You didn’t take them yourself, did you?”

She had no idea who this man was but he introduced himself as Alexander Hawthorne and claimed he was from the Order of the Wolf. What was that? Was it a Videnese thing? Or some sort of national or even world-wide organisation? That wasn't good, why was he here? Vega didn't like or trust guards having their eyes on her or hers, it was a deep seated suspicion and fear from her childhood. "Um.. come in, Officer." Was that the right name for him? She didn't think anything else could be, and besides, he already was in. As he entered, "Alexander" would notice that there were, in fact, two very separate beds, both of which seemed to have things around them, on them and looked like they were being used. One of them, hers evidently, had pillows and so on piled against the footboard as a means of her elevating her legs. Also, there was equipment out in the main area of the room. Weights for lifting, that kind of thing.

Who was she? Vega answered, immediately. Her father had told her, all her life, don't annoy the guard and answer their questions. Co-operate, always. "I'm Eva Lei'nox, sir. Everyone knows me as Vega Lei'nox, though." Full answer, polite yes, that would be alright, she was sure. Vega looked at him and moved over to where the chair was she'd been sitting in to exercise and then she lowered herself down into it. "You wanna talk to Arlo? Why? What's this about?" Vega was nervous and uncertain when it was about her. But if it was about Arlo, she was going to get argumentative. "What do you wanna talk to Arlo about?" Vega asked again and then he sat down on the bed. Hers, specifically.

And started asking where they were. "Where are who? Who're they? Do you think Arlo's with someone, cos I assure you he isn't." She was confused, in pain, trembling and sweating and she knew that she shouldn't have done the exercises without him here, but this dweeb was saying that he'd gone somewhere to be with someone? No, that wasn't true. "He's gone to do some shoppin' he won't be long, he never leaves me for long since this all happened, say what now?" She shook her head and her frown deepened. "Take what myself? I have got precisely no idea what yer talkin' about, but Arlo is not with anyone, he's jus' gone shoppin', is all. Take what? Where?"

With a deep frown, Vega wondered as she looked at him. "An' what's this Order of the Wolf?" And then, with a perfectly straight face and because her father had always told her to. "Have you got, like, papers or somethin'?" She wondered, looking at him, "I mean, a'right if not, but yer gonna have to help me out. What is it you want to know?"

Arlo hadn't wanted to leave Vega alone even for just a bit. He hadn't told her as much directly, since she'd only have told him he was being overprotective. He would have denied it, she wouldn't have believed him, and round and round they'd have gone. He'd suspected she knew anyway, considering how much trouble he'd gone to in order to make sure she had everything she could need or want while he was gone. As if he was going to be gone a ten-trial or more. Still, considering he, and they were, you could never know for sure. In fact he wouldn't have gone at all, except that before they'd gotten off the Wanderlust to head for the inn, Huw had approached him and with little explanation, had placed a small leather pouch in his hand.

Arlo had known what was in that pouch and could have, right then, shown it to Vega. It would have pleased her, and far more than that. But there was something else he needed to do first, mend a few things that was. So he'd headed to the market to pick up the simplest of items, but one that was also more important than most anything he could think of. It would bring a smile and a light to her eyes that that he'd seen before and wanted to see again. His purchase was stuffed in his pocket when he returned to the inn and headed up the stairs.

As he stepped onto the floor where their room was located and neared the door, something caused him to pause and hesitate before opening up the door. Voices, coming from their room where he'd have expected her to be alone. Definitely a man's voice. One that didn't sound very friendly from Arlo's perspective, and from the tone of Vega's voice, she sounded agitated. And then? The man shouted at her and instantly on alert,

Arlo scowled and reached inside the opening of his coat and made sure his pistol crossbow was loaded before he opened the door. Just a crack at first to make sure there wasn't a bow or a sword laying in wait, and then he opened it wider. What he saw? A human, close to the same age as him maybe. And dressed, carrying himself in such a way as to suggest several possibilities. Someone who was part of some organized militia, or something. Or, a sell sword with an inflated sense of self. Didn't matter. The man was alone in the room with Vega, and that was definitely not alright. "Who are you?" he asked. "And what's going on?"

Suspicious Behaviour

“No, Miss Lei’nox, it is not about that”, Devin quickly assured Vega. It seemed as if the dark-haired man was not just her accomplice, but also her boyfriend or her husband, and she was worried about him cheating on her. Had he done that before? It was likely, but he decided to curb his curiosity as it was none of his business – or rather none of Alexander’s business. While Devin himself quite happily pried into the affairs of others, Alexander was highly professional and only interested in catching criminals. Why, he was such a hard-working secret agent that he didn’t even have time for a lover!

“You know exactly what I’m talking about, Miss Lei’nox”, Devin retorted and resisted the urge to grin even though he was beginning to really enjoy himself. Officer Hawthorn didn’t grin. The poor man was capable of exactly two facial expressions and just as many emotions: indifference and contempt. “Don’t try to deny it. I may be a lot of things, but I’m not blind. I saw your companion and you enter the brothel. As for what the Order of the Wolf is, I’m afraid I’m not allowed to tell you. It’s top secret, you know?” he claimed, hoping that she would be satisfied with that. He didn’t say anything when she asked him for papers, as if he found the fact that Vega doubted him offensive.

It was just then that the door was being opened, and he suddenly found himself looking at her accomplice. Arlo was about the same height and weight as him, he noticed, which would make subduing him if things got out of control difficult, but then again, it probably wouldn’t come to that. He doubted that these two would be stupid enough to beat up or kill an officer at an inn where there were a lot of other people nearby, and thus he gave Arlo his best, most arrogant Alexander-Hawthorne-look and introduced himself. “Officer Alexander Hawthorne. Mister Arlo, I presume?” he asked, secretly wondering if the man had a last name – or if Arlo was actually his last name.

He paused for a moment and pulled his cloak aside so that the two apparently somewhat intellectually challenged drug dealers would be able to see the sword at his belt, and then he asked, slowly so that they hopefully wouldn’t have any problems following his words,

“Where are the drugs?”

"I 'aven't got a bloody clue, actually," Vega said when Mister Hawthorne said that she knew what he was talking about. She was starting to get really wound up, incredibly agitated and nervous all at the same time. It had been less than forty days since she'd died and been broken, physically, and she was still in a lot of pain. More than that, Vega had experienced such a lot of things and she was coming to terms with them, but slowly. They took time to process and she hated, absolutely hated that what they left her with, more than anything was a lack of confidence and a feeling of being vulnerable. And weak. Weak. It was pathetic and she hated it about the whole situation and here was this man and he was a guard or something, and she'd been raised to respect them. But this?

Vega's eyes, betraying her Biqaj heritage, swirled in a mass of colours. There were at least a half dozen shades and hues in them and they moved quickly. She was hurt and weakened and vulnerable, it was true.

But she was also, although she did not realise that it was where it came from, very much her mother's daughter.

"Well I can't argue that yer not blind, but you might as well be you steamin' numpty," yes, it seemed meek and concerned and vulnerable had gone out of the window and into the frozen tundra of Viden. Looking at him, she glanced down at him very pointedly and then raised an eyebrow. "You saw us comin' out of the brothel an' yer 'avin' troubles gettin' yerself sorted? They'll help you, love, but what's this now?" The Order of the Wolf was top secret? Vega looked at him and that was it. Enough. "If it's top secret, you rampant plonker, why'd you tell me you belonged to it? I mean, are you a special kind of stupid an' that was part of the trainin' or is it cos you can't get yerself goin' in the sack?" Top secret? Vega shook her head and glared at him. "If you think, jus' cos we went to a brothel yer sniffin' round 'ere in the hopes that I'm givin' you anythin', I'm gonna punch you into... Arlo!" Of course, she'd been going to say Ashan, but just at that moment, Arlo came in and so got to hear however much he did of her words. Either way, her heart leapt in pleasure at the sight of him and it showed in the sudden swirls of her eyes.

Yet, when Vega looked at him she was pale, still trembling slightly and he knew by now how she looked after she'd pushed herself. But there was something else which he hadn't seen in a long time. Not like this. She was angry. When Mr Hawthorne, or Officer Hawthorne or quite frankly, the Immortal Hawthorne because he was flibbertying her gibbet to the point that she really didn't care, when he flashed his sword, that was it. If she'd been fully fit, Vega would have jumped up, but instead she stood. Slowly, but surely. As she did, he said something, but in typical Vega fashion she didn't entirely process it because she was doing something else.

"He saw us leavin' the brothel an' he's a member of a top secret organisation, whose name he tells me is the Order of the Wolf. So either his organisation is top secret but recruits idiots an' has a lousy induction programme, or he's just a total pillock. I think they mus' be a bunch of guys who can't get girlfriends. But I tell you what, you wanna flash that sword about in 'ere, Officer Floppybits, an' I'll fight you, braces on my legs or... say what now?" Vega turned to him and looked at Devin incredulously. "Drugs? You need drugs to get it sorted....? I think he might need them to get 'imself started, with the ladies." Vega supplied, helpfully, to Arlo. "Why would we 'ave them?" Well, she supposed, some kind of performance enhancing drug would make sense in a brothel - the customer always being right and that. But still. "Listen, sunshine, don't let the separate beds fool you. He's marked by Cassion an' even before that we... not that it's yer business. But no, we haven't got, don't need an' really don't want any drugs fer that thanks. But you know, if you'd jus' knocked the door an' asked, I'm sure the brothel girls would have sold you some."

One look at Vega's face, just her posture, her state and the color of her eyes, told Arlo an awful lot of what he needed to know about the man in in their room. He was trouble. The man's words and demanding tone told him more, both before and after he'd stepped into the room. He wasn't welcome by either of them. And if there was anything left of the story, Vega turned around and told him all of it. In fact, maybe a little too much to have been shared in mixed company. Or any company save between the two of them. Did she have to share that?

"Officer of what?" Arlo asked bluntly, while taking in more of the man's appearance and not finding anything about his clothing that seemed particularly familiar, and he'd passed by a number of guardsmen and official looking sorts while he was out. Order of the Wolf? He'd never heard of it, but then they hadn't been in Viden for very long. "It's not mister Arlo," he added pointedly, though he didn't care to share his surname openly with a stranger who apparently was here uninvited, or had at least outstayed his welcome. And then? "What drugs?" He looked back to Vega, who was quick to fill in the blanks. In the meantime he left the door open behind him. Would save time when it came time to kick the intruder out.

So, this was about the brothel. Was Arlo about to tell this man that they'd gone into a brothel because he'd mistaken it for a sweet shop? Or tell anyone that? Not on his life. "If you're a member of an order that's anything but a collection of ne'er do wells and dunderheads, I'm the Prince of Eternal Darkness." But it was clear they'd been shadowed even then. When this Hawthorne, if that was in fact his name flashed his sword at them however, Arlo had had enough. "Are you threatening us?" he said pointedly, "Or are we comparing the sizes of our...arsenals?" he asked, but opted out of displaying any weapon he had on him, save the long sword that was already in plain sight. "Well, you'll lose if that's what you're doing."

The man would lose at sheer scrap too, if Vego got any more wound up than she already was. Arlo didn't want to see that happen under any circumstances. "You've gotten us confused with somebody else plainly," he said then and he'd rather avoid a scrap himself, especially in a rented room. No doubt the establishment would make him pay for the damage and the resulting stains on the rug.

Suspicious Behaviour

Devin wasn’t particularly familiar with Biqaj, but he knew that the fact that the woman’s eyes began to swirl in a mass of colors probably wasn’t good. It began to dawn on him that he might have bitten off more than he could chew, but he was not himself at the moment. He was pretending to be Officer Hawthorne, and Officer Hawthorne was stubborn and arrogant and wouldn’t let himself be intimidated by an idiotic drug dealer and her accomplice. So he remained seated and listened to her tirade with a stony expression on her face - at least he tried to listen to her. She was talking so quickly, and she had such a thick accent that he only understood half of what she said, and the things that he did understood didn’t make a lot of sense to him. What on Idalos were a steamin’ numpty and a rampant plonker?!

When she accused him of only wanting the drugs because he was incapable of having sex (at least that was what he thought she had implied, he had only understood every second or third word), he just stared at her incredulously for a moment, completely overlooking the fact that Officer Hawthorne would never stare incredulously at anybody. “What?! No!” he stammered. “That part of my body is perfectly functional, thank you very much. I don’t want to take your drugs. I just want to confiscate them. Besides, I …” he began and stopped again abruptly, realizing that explaining things to her would be a futile endeavor. She had gotten so worked up that she probably wouldn’t register anything he had said, and after a while Devin just sat there, holding his head desperately because it felt like somebody was hitting it with a hammer. When would she finally shut up?

“Whatever”, he muttered barely audibly as Arlo insisted that it was not Mister Arlo. “The drugs you sold the prostitutes”, he explained and perked up slightly. While Miss Lei’nox was obviously completely crazy, her accomplice seemed to possess at least a small amount of common sense which made him hopeful that he wouldn’t have to leave the inn with empty hands – or maybe not. Arlo didn’t seem to be particularly interested in giving him the drugs either, and what more, he seemed to have seen right through his lies!

“All hail to the Prince of Eternal Darkness!” he retorted sarcastically because he wasn’t willing to admit that he was an imposter yet and raised his hands as if he were praising his new master as well even though doing so was out of character for Officer Hawthorne with his limited array of emotions and his lack of a sense of humor. Or maybe not. People sometimes acted slightly out of character when they were confronted with something unexpected – such as a mad drug dealer and her accomplice, the Prince of Eternal Darkness! Officer Hawthorne was seriously out of his element now!

As Arlo asked him if he were threatening them, the false officer quickly assured him, “Of course not! I’m just trying to protect myself and showing you that attacking me would be a really bad idea. I know how to use my weapon!” he claimed and looked at his own short sword and then at Arlo’s that was much longer and bigger and just better in every single aspect. “As for comparing arsenals, I have something even bigger. You just can’t see it at the moment”, he lied because he hated feeling inferior. He meant a sword, of course. Officer Hawthorne owned a ton of swords of various lengths. In fact, there was an entire room in his villa that was dedicated to his … arsenal. Sometimes he used it on his slaves. He was probably the kind of man who used his slaves for target practice and experimented on them.

As Arlo informed him that he had gotten them confused with somebody else, Devin blinked and looked at him for a moment, wondering if he was being truthful, and then he asked, “So you are not a pair of dealers that sold the prostitutes drugs, and she isn’t high?” He pointed at Vega, and then he abruptly rose to his feet and began to move towards the door so that he would be able to run quickly if worse came to worst. He wasn’t sure if Arlo and Vega weren’t lying, but he also wasn’t sure how much longer he would be able to stand Vega with her insane blabbering. At that point he was seriously worried that he would lose his mind and end up in an insane asylum!

Suspicious Behaviour

Vega was relieved in the extreme that Arlo was there with her and she glared at Officer Hawthorne, or Officer Floppyparts as he now forever was in her head. "Well if that part of you's functionin' what are you doin' watchin' people go into a brothel? Is it part of yer secret society of the "we're-the-can't-get-it-up-pups" brigade? Or are you jus' a pervert? Is that it? Cos you know, you sound like one." Arlo was right, Vega hadn't been this angry, this worked up in a long, long time and she didn't really realise that at least some of her anger was nothing to do with the man in front of her. "An' if I could, I'd be kickin' you that hard right now that if that bit of you does work at the bit, it never would again, cos you are flibbertyin' my gibbet an' then some." He was, she realised, and she really had to calm down. Like, really, she was furious.

So, she tried to calm herself down and he spoke to Arlo. But calming herself was an exercise in futility. "Well if we 'ad drugs, which we didn't, an' we sold them, we wouldn't have them no more would we?" Vega frowned deeply and shook her head. "Have you got a special helper who's lost you an' is gonna be worried? Or did yer mother drop you on yer head when you were born or somethin'? I mean, you have got to have been born this stupid, no one achieves it without a significant head start." She moved over to Arlo and her limp was more pronounced than it normally would be, he knew, but she'd pushed herself and had been pushing herself when the door knocked.

When the Officer said, though, that he had something they couldn't see right now, Vega bit, "Somethin' we can't see right now? Any sense comin' out of yer gob for one." Then, this guy who had barged into their room, scared her (which was why she was reacting so strongly, of course), and accused her of stuff and threatened them? Then, he wondered if she was under the influence of drugs."A'right, that's it, pass me my sword, Arlo?. Actually, never mind I'm gonna beat 'im to death with my bare hands." Her eyes were deep crimson red and she bent and lifted her skirts just enough to reveal a pair of relatively recently mangled legs, obviously so. She'd had surgery on both, scars trailed down them, especially the left one. They were in splints and braces and she was still bruised and swollen. "I'm high on life, I am. It's all jus' great. Now you get out or I swear to U'frek an' Xiur, I am gonna rip you into pieces an' eat yer insides. An' you know what? He'll cook em up nice for me, cos not even he's gonna argue with me right now. Get out." She was furious, there was no doubting it.

"Before I do somethin' that I'll enjoy, he'll regret an' you'll not see the end of."
